Am I the only one who thinks it's weird for a 33-year-old man to call his mother "Darling"?

That's how my bf refers to his mother. It's "darling" this and "darling" that. I thought maybe it was odd that I call my mother "Mama", but "darling"? Seriously. It's strange, right?

by Anonymousreply 4009/21/2013

Is he from the South? I have a group of friends from New Orleans and they call EVERYBODY darling!

by Anonymousreply 101/16/2013

Ya, that's strange, OP.

by Anonymousreply 201/16/2013

Is he obsessed with old movies? It sounds like an eldergay cinephile affectation.

by Anonymousreply 301/16/2013

Dated a guy who called his mother "Mommy." When we broke up, after he'd leveled the fourth or fifth nasty comment to me, I told him how weird it was that he did that.

by Anonymousreply 401/16/2013

Yea it's weird. Who knows? His mom may make him do it. My mother never had me call her anything as odd as darling but I could never call her mom. I always had to call her by her first name.

by Anonymousreply 501/16/2013

Sounds like some shit out of Grey Gardens.

by Anonymousreply 601/16/2013

It depends. Is he a Gabor sister?

by Anonymousreply 701/16/2013

Weird? Yes

Pretentious? Hell yes!

by Anonymousreply 801/16/2013

I think a person should be able to call his mother whatever s/he wants and you should mind your own God-damn business.

If a person said, "I think gays are weird," you'd be starting threads on how that person should be banned.

by Anonymousreply 901/16/2013

He needs a good, hard spanking.

by Anonymousreply 1001/17/2013

[quote] I think a person should be able to call his mother whatever s/he wants and you should mind your own God-damn business.

So you call your mother pussylips then?

by Anonymousreply 1101/17/2013

What about Mommie Dearest?

by Anonymousreply 1201/17/2013

Noel Coward did it. Perhaps he thinks it's sophisticated.

by Anonymousreply 1301/17/2013

Wasn't there some celebrity son who did that? Kate Winslet's maybe? Seems weird. Maybe some kids start calling their mother what she calls them and then it turns into a habit?

by Anonymousreply 1401/17/2013

I guess it's not that strange, I had a British boyfriend who called his mother "Love".

by Anonymousreply 1501/17/2013

Elvis called his mother "Satiny". I had a mother until I was 45 years old, but she was just my mother, not my lover. She and I did not have any pet names for each other.

by Anonymousreply 1601/17/2013

Yes, deeply weird; but then I'm put out by anyone past the age of 10 or 12 who refers to his or her parents or grandparents by cutsey names. There comes a point when elders should be addressed in more adult ways.

Not long ago I heard a woman in her early 40s say "Mom Mom" repeatedly (in speaking to other adults - not to a young child.)

by Anonymousreply 1701/17/2013

no, what i personally have a problem with are people who call their parents by their first name. now, that's weird.

by Anonymousreply 1801/17/2013

[quote]I had a British boyfriend who called his mother "Love".

In Brit-speak that's the equivalent of "dear" ... which is not the same as "darling," at least when referring to a parent. OP's bf is either a fantastically flamboyant faggola imported straight from the '70s to bedazzle and entrance us, or he's simply trying too hard.

by Anonymousreply 1901/17/2013

I'm a glam-ma.

by Anonymousreply 2001/17/2013

That's weird at any age.

by Anonymousreply 2101/17/2013

DL just finds it odd that he doesn't call his mother 'cunt.'

by Anonymousreply 2201/17/2013

Break up with him OP if it bothers you so much. Dick.

by Anonymousreply 2301/17/2013

That's not odd. Men who allow their mothers to do their cleaning or laundry are weird. Men over 25 who live in an apartment owned by their parents are weird. Men who give dating or marital advice to their mothers are weird.

Men who advise their mothers on matters of clothing and good lighting are ok.

by Anonymousreply 2401/17/2013

Have you askd him what her real first name is? Maybe it's "Darling".

by Anonymousreply 2501/17/2013

[R19] Thanks for your input, love.

by Anonymousreply 2601/18/2013

Weird shmeird. We're all Weird, darling. ALL OF US. I'm a 43 year old female who calls her mother "mommy." I am good looking and cool enough to call my mother whatever I want without worrying about what others think. I'm perfectly aware that others might find it odd, but my mommy is a mommy to me me.

by Anonymousreply 2701/18/2013

R3 is exactly right.

One example is Cary Grant calling his mother "Darling" in "North by Northwest"

OP's friend is trying to be Cary Grant.

by Anonymousreply 2801/18/2013

He's channeling Tallulah Bankhead.

by Anonymousreply 2909/16/2013

He sounds like an uber queen.

by Anonymousreply 3009/16/2013

I call my daughter "hon" once in a while, she is 25. Is that weIrd?

by Anonymousreply 3109/16/2013

There was a character in an Agatha Christie novel who did that, and he turned out to be the murderer.

Be very careful, OP.

by Anonymousreply 3209/16/2013

I call mine Mumsy.

by Anonymousreply 3309/16/2013

Fuck off OP

by Anonymousreply 3409/16/2013

Does he have an unusually large collection of dolls, OP?

by Anonymousreply 3509/16/2013

Yes, OP, you're the only one.

by Anonymousreply 3609/21/2013

I suppose "darling" is better than "wrinkled old cunt"

by Anonymousreply 3709/21/2013

Unusual - yes.

But, who knows why he calls her that. For all you know, it could be some inside joke from his childhood.

Now weird would be if he used multiple, different interchangeable romantic terms of endearment in addition to "darling" which would suggest a wacked out relationship.

by Anonymousreply 3809/21/2013

What does AC call his mother?

by Anonymousreply 3909/21/2013

Didn't Norman Bates call his mother "Darling"?
