Ranking the American Idol Winners

From worst to best. Not so much by their subsequent commercial success, just how good they are.

11. Lee DeWyze. He's cute and can more or less carry a tune, but doesn't seem particularly inspired. Should not have won. Has faded faster than a Bravo reality tv star.

10. Scotty Mcreery. He's ok. Barely distinguishable from the two or three who won before him.

9. Kris Allen. Really not that bad, although I'm not sure I see an appeal outside suburban coffeehouses. One half-decent Kanye West cover will not carry a career.

8. Ruben Studdard. So unbelievably dull, if he'd been around in the 80s he'd have fallen far behind a much better group of soul crooners (Luther, Peabo, James Ingram, etc.). I do have soft spot for him, though, for having sung Superstar.

7. Fantasia. Can't say I ever "got" her. I thought Jennifer Hudson and Diana DeGarmo were both much better. And what a nails-on-the-chalkboard voice! Ugh. But I'll give her points for being unique.

6. Jordin Sparks. Can't say I remember too much about her, but she strikes me as someone who should be cranking out anonymous gay disco anthems (a la Cascada or Deborah Cox) and not trying to rule Billboard.

5. Taylor Hicks. Often and mercilessly mocked, but I think it's more like he's in the wrong genre. He's a genuine blues guy in a way that few white guys can pull off, but he will never be a pop star.

4. Carrie Underwood. Strong pipes, no doubt, although I wish she didn't look exactly like 50 other country blondes. Great singer, I guess. Zero personality.

3. David Cook. Wildly underrated. Love the smoky voice. Definitely one who I hope can at some point achieve the commercial recognition he deserves.

2. Phillip Phillips. Dumb name, hugely talented. That Home song is good but starting to get irritating.

1. Kelly Clarkson. The first Idol and still far and away the best. A truly stunning talent. I would put her up against anyone (Celine, Mariah, Babs, Whitney, etc.) as the greatest pop singer ever.

by Anonymousreply 21705/30/2015

Frankentasia is the worst, not to mention a drugged up whore!

by Anonymousreply 101/14/2013

Clay should have won, love Ruben but Clay had more range in his voice.

by Anonymousreply 201/14/2013

Don't care about the winners. The real winners didn't win.

by Anonymousreply 401/14/2013

R3 that's painfully unfunny and sophomoric.

by Anonymousreply 501/14/2013

[quote]1. Kelly Clarkson. The first Idol and still far and away the best. A truly stunning talent. I would put her up against anyone (Celine, Mariah, Babs, Whitney, etc.) as the greatest pop singer ever.

You actually typed this with a straight face???

by Anonymousreply 601/14/2013

Did the last year's winner even have a record contract? I saw him being interviewed he acted like you could buy his cd on his website?

by Anonymousreply 701/14/2013

I see it's White-Trash-American-Idol-Fan season on DL.

by Anonymousreply 801/14/2013

In most cases the more talented also-rans had more of an impact during the competitions. People like Adam, Clay, Jennifer, Melinda Doolittle, Daughtry and Elliott Yamin were singers whe you really looked forward to seeing week after week. The downside of Idol is that it's teen girls who vote in droves and they don't necessarily vote for talent but for the chemical reaction the singers ingnite in their wee teen bodies. Also the teenies seem to be on a C&W kick the past few years which can be as dull as listening to paint dry.

by Anonymousreply 901/14/2013

R6, those Kelly Nuts are almost as obnoxious as the Glamberts.

by Anonymousreply 1001/14/2013

Clarkson's problem is that the material she uses sucks.

by Anonymousreply 1101/14/2013

You need to be a cute white boy to win AI nowadays.

by Anonymousreply 1201/14/2013

[quote]10. Scotty Mcreery. He's ok. Barely distinguishable from the two or three who won before him.

What? He's NOTHING like the "two or three" who won before him.

[quote]5. Taylor Hicks. Often and mercilessly mocked, but I think it's more like he's in the wrong genre. He's a genuine blues guy in a way that few white guys can pull off, but he will never be a pop star.

Five? Bitch please. Taylor Hicks is THE WORST Idol winner to date.

[quote]3. David Cook. Wildly underrated. Love the smoky voice. Definitely one who I hope can at some point achieve the commercial recognition he deserves.

"wildly underrated" = "I want to have sex with him"

by Anonymousreply 1401/14/2013

[quote]Did the last year's winner even have a record contract? I saw him being interviewed he acted like you could buy his cd on his website?

What a stupid question. His debut album went gold and the single "Home" went double platinum.

by Anonymousreply 1501/14/2013

R15, P2's single Home is at 3.5 million and shows no signs of slowing down. His album is gold and rapidly approaching platinum. Idol hasn't had anyone, winner or not, selling this well in many years.

by Anonymousreply 1601/14/2013

There was a great article a few years back, when Scotty was competing. I forget the girl who came in second, Alaina or something like that, but the article was talking about how religious Scotty was and how the girl had a hard time singing the word "evil" because she was such a goody goody and thought it was bad.

The article went on to talk about how southern values voters always vote for the contestant who is most like them, not who is the most talented. That is why Daughtry, Lambert, Hudson, etc. never win. It wasn't always this way, which is why we have Fantasia, Ruben, Jordan, etc. but it's morphed into a church revival competition. And the reason why you seldom ever hear of the winners again is because it's all young kids who have morals and can't compete with the outrageous antics of Rihanna, Katy, Keisha, Gaga, etc. These kids are more geared to sing at a church picnic.

I'm paraphrasing of course, but you get the gist. I actually quit watching the show at that point because it was dead on. It's not a talent competition, it's a 'moral value' and 'who's most like me' competition.

by Anonymousreply 1901/14/2013

Honey, from last season Jessica Sanchez and the guy who came in 3rd Joshua Ledet are two of the best singers ever on the show, they are both amazing.

Here they are dueting on "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" watch the ending.

by Anonymousreply 2001/14/2013

R19, so you are saying that Ruben & Clay, who are both from the deep south, both raised singing in church, were so equal in their southerness that Ruben won because there were more black voters or was it that Clay was gay and there were more homophobic voters?

I'll go with door #2.

by Anonymousreply 2101/14/2013

R19, I think it's less about morals and values, and more about teenage/tween white girls voting for the dreamy white boy who can strum a guitar. Basically, girls voting for the cute heartthrob - nothing new about that.

by Anonymousreply 2201/14/2013

Ruben was no white boy guitar strumming teen heart throb.

by Anonymousreply 2301/14/2013

I'd agree with you, R21, but as I said in R19, it wasn't always that way, according to the article.

The show morphed over the years into a vote for who is 'most like me'. So it probably wasn't that way at the beginning, but I would bet homophobia cost both Clay and Adam the title.

by Anonymousreply 2401/14/2013

Don't forget the sexy bald guy and the Gay Aiken.

by Anonymousreply 2501/14/2013

Are any of them selling their CDs at the car wash while they're on break?

by Anonymousreply 2601/14/2013

Isn't Ruben gay? I know a white guy who looks/talks a lot like him who is a closeted married guy so I think Ruben might be also.

by Anonymousreply 2701/14/2013

Ruben is not gay.

by Anonymousreply 2801/14/2013

OP didn't want to be called a fraucunt. That's why Hicks is at 5 and not 1. That would have been obvious.

by Anonymousreply 2901/14/2013

I don' understand how they could ever let a common street thug win.

by Anonymousreply 3001/14/2013

R30 Fantasia?

by Anonymousreply 3101/14/2013

What r6 said. These Kelly Clarkson nuts, seriously.

by Anonymousreply 3201/14/2013

[quote]4. Carrie Underwood. Strong pipes, no doubt, although I wish she didn't look exactly like 50 other country blondes. Great singer, I guess. Zero personality.

I can categorically tell you that she DOES have a personality, and that it's a great one. She's actually hilarious. Unfortunately, it just doesn't come across all too well in her performances and public manner.

She practiced her voice into to epic proportions after winning AI, and I'd say she's at least just as good as Kelly.

by Anonymousreply 3301/14/2013

I saw Taylor Hicks perform at a casino (the friend I was with got free tickets as a comp) and he wasn't that bad, actually quite good. Not good enough to do a stadium-filling tour but fine for an evening's entertainment. Saw him on the casino floor after the show, late in the evening.

by Anonymousreply 3401/15/2013

[quote]Saw him on the casino floor after the show, late in the evening.

On the floor? Passed out?

by Anonymousreply 3501/15/2013

All pale in comparison to our little Honduran hot hole, David Archuleta.

by Anonymousreply 3601/15/2013

I honestly never understood all the Kelly Clarkson hype. Her voice is so raspy, she sounds like she's yelling all the time, and her songs all sound the same.

by Anonymousreply 3701/15/2013

R36, he had to leave "entertainment" to go on a Mormon mission.

by Anonymousreply 3801/15/2013

"...and her songs all sound the same." How original! Shows some of you are hard of hearing and can't discern talent from talent wannabes.

by Anonymousreply 3901/15/2013

I've been a faithful viewer since the show premiered in the '60s & the only one I ever voted for was Carmen Rasmussen.

by Anonymousreply 4001/15/2013

Clay Aiken should have beat Ruben. And he should have beat Arsenio, too. But it doesn't matter. His career will always be better than both of theirs combined. And I like Ruben & Arsenio, but Clay is just that much more talented.

Phillip Phillips is wonderful. He's my all-time favorite American Idol winner.

Adam Lambert should have won, too. His music is not music I care to listen to, but his talent his undeniable.

by Anonymousreply 4101/15/2013

Has David Archuleta come out of the closet yet? (if he is indeed gay)

by Anonymousreply 4201/15/2013

"I see it's White-Trash-American-Idol-Fan season on DL."

Does it ever end?

by Anonymousreply 4301/15/2013

R33, no way in hell Underwood's as strong a singer as Clarkson. Clarkson is stunningly versatile. Did you watch the Duets singing competetion last year?

by Anonymousreply 4401/15/2013

Kelly's fans want the big belting, anthemic arena songs like "Stronger." She's acknowledged that and jokingly (?) complained about it. That's why all of her songs sound the same.

by Anonymousreply 4501/15/2013

I'm far from being a country music fan, but I disagree with OP about Carrie Underwood. I prefer her to Clarkson, actually, and strangely it is the material. Clarkson does what I consider insipid, instantly forgettable pop numbers; Underwood has really done some good songs that, even if they weren't in my preferred genre, stuck with me. Plus, I think she's totally gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 4601/15/2013

[quote]R33 no way in hell Underwood's as strong a singer as Clarkson. Clarkson is stunningly versatile. Did you watch the Duets singing competetion last year?

No. I'm pretty sure you have it wrong. Carrie got really good.

[quote]Has David Archuleta come out of the closet yet? (if he is indeed gay)

Oh, man. He appears to be on his Latter-Day mission at the moment.

by Anonymousreply 4701/15/2013

David Archie will come out when he is ready. Let's give him the time to work through it on his own. Like it was for Clay, he could still be in the denial stage waiting for puberty to hit.

by Anonymousreply 4801/15/2013

I thought Taylor Hicks was the worst winner in American Idol history. He was a talentless clown. To this day I don't know how he won over Chris Daughtry.

Although Chris has become much more successful than Taylor, so it's all good. I mean, where is Taylor these days? Haven't heard a word about him in ages.

by Anonymousreply 4901/15/2013

[quote]Clarkson does what I consider insipid, instantly forgettable pop numbers

Ahem...excuse me?

STRONGER (WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU)

by Anonymousreply 5001/15/2013

[quote]Clarkson is stunningly versatile.

I heard she was mostly a top.

by Anonymousreply 5101/15/2013

Ahem R50. You proved the point. Insipid forgettable man bashing fluff.

by Anonymousreply 5201/17/2013

Don't think so, R52. These songs were monster hits, and several of them have nothing to do with man-bashing. But thanks anyway.

by Anonymousreply 5301/17/2013

Kelly Clarkson does a great job with THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE, from the LOVE ACTUALLY soundtrack. However the hands down winner in terms of generating real and authentic electricity in the audience will always be Clay Aiken. The night he sang BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER he blew the roof off the place.

by Anonymousreply 5401/17/2013

However the hands down winner in terms of generating real and authentic electricity in the audience will always be ADAM LAMBERT

There. Fixed it for you R54.

by Anonymousreply 5501/17/2013

Making a list of the best AI winners!

I remember how much fun it was back in middle school to categorize trivia. Youth is so sweetly hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 5601/17/2013

Update: Reuben Studdard is going to compete on the next season of "The Biggest Loser". No, I'm not making a joke-sadly that is true. As much as it will be great to see him get in better shape/health, it's sad that someone of his vocal talent will also be using this exposure as a career move. I just hope maybe he can gain some fans again. If someone wanted to make a separate thread about it, go ahead.

by Anonymousreply 5707/06/2013

lol Ruben.

by Anonymousreply 5807/06/2013

The producers needed a black winner,so they chose Ruben, an affable, teddy bearish type; It had noting to do with homophobia, but the need to keep black viewers and seem non-racist.

by Anonymousreply 5907/06/2013

I wonder if the Biggest Loser exposure will make people care about Ruben again. He has a nice voice.

by Anonymousreply 6007/06/2013

I agree 100% Kelly Clarkson is by far the best they ever had, though I would not rate her as the greatest pop star ever--not even close. But she's terrific all the same, and has deserved her fine career.

As for the winners, there are several they had over the years who did not win who are better than any of the others: Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Elliot Yamin.

by Anonymousreply 6107/06/2013

[quote]6. Jordin Sparks. Can't say I remember too much about her, but she strikes me as someone who should be cranking out anonymous gay disco anthems (a la Cascada or Deborah Cox) and not trying to rule Billboard.

She seems like a nice girl and has a good voice, but she isn't really much of a performer and her songs suck really bad. I agree - she should try going down the dance music route.

by Anonymousreply 6207/06/2013

Anyone who doubts Carrie Underwood's singing ability has not seen her performance of "How Great Thou Art" at the CMAs last year. Amazing. I love Kelly Clarkson, and I think she's definitely the more versatile singer, but Underwood has serious chops.

by Anonymousreply 6307/06/2013

Kris Allen should hire Adam Lambert to produce some tracks for his next album (if he gets to do another one.) During their season they really seemed to feed off each other's very different music styles and personalities.

by Anonymousreply 6407/06/2013

Vocally, it's Carrie Underwood who's the best not Kelly! Listen to Kelly's Before Your Love during the season 1 finale (both results and performance show), her lower register really sucked! She had a lot of bum notes there! (Skip to 2:00 in the video) While Carrie was so pitch perfect!

But when it comes to stage presence, Taylor Hicks is by miles the best!

by Anonymousreply 6505/16/2014

Fantasia's voice unique? I'm really surprised why no one pointed out that Fantasia sounds exactly like Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child! She's not unique!

by Anonymousreply 6605/16/2014

Carrie is the only winner with a unique voice... You will never confuse her voice with anyone else's when you hear her on radio!

The rest are so generic!

by Anonymousreply 6705/16/2014

David Cook should bare some skin.. he's hot

by Anonymousreply 6805/16/2014

OP, to me you lost all credibility when you put Phil Phillips at #2.

by Anonymousreply 6905/16/2014

R54 and R55 It's Taylor Hicks who never failed to work the audience... Not Clay, not Adam... Didn't notice that most runners-up are gay!

by Anonymousreply 7005/16/2014

Scotty McGreary has a unique voice. So very very low.

There is only one other singer who sounds somewhat similar and he is also in country music. (he was not on American Idol)

And the OP's assessment of Scotty is ludicrous and could not be more wrong - saying that Scott is indecipherable from a couple of other winners preceding him.

There is not another American Idol winner who is even remotely similar to Scotty McGreery. Scotty is the only male American Idol winner who is a country music singer.

Scotty's voice is extremely different from other winners and no one other winner looks anything like him.

The OP's assessments are 99 percent wrong on every winner he lists. The OP is lacking information and knowledge, and makes laughably wrong statements and assessments of each winner he lists.

by Anonymousreply 7105/16/2014

The dumb dope ridiculing Taylor Hicks on this thread does not have a shred of information or knowledge of Taylor Hicks' actual career and talks about his career with sheer stupidity - Taylor Hicks career is doing quite well.

by Anonymousreply 7205/16/2014

None of these Idol winners became as successful as Britney Spears or Rihanna!

by Anonymousreply 7305/16/2014

Winner Lee DeWyze makes a living in music.

Any person who can make a living in music deserve credit.

by Anonymousreply 7405/16/2014

R73, you sound young and stupid. Or maybe you're not young, but you're still stupid.

The point is not to be as big as Rihanna or Britney. For you to think so is quite immature and a sheltered uneducated point of view.

The point is to have a career in music and be able to make a living in music.

by Anonymousreply 7505/16/2014

to those curious about what Taylor Hicks is up to nowadays, see this

by Anonymousreply 7605/16/2014

R75 Did I mention that they have to?

I was just pointing out that no idol winner went as big as Britney or Rihanna! therefore, the show is not as successful as many people think it is! Sorry! Idol was a flop!

Even Carrie Underwood can't outsell Taylor Swift considering she has a year headstart! LOL

by Anonymousreply 7705/16/2014

Carrie is vocally much better than Kelly whose voice always sounded so strained...

by Anonymousreply 7805/16/2014

Phillip Phillps has his second album coming out next week. It'll be interested to see how it does, and if he can manage to be the only Idol winner besides Kelly and Carrie not to slide into obscurity.

by Anonymousreply 7905/16/2014

Fantasia is really gifted--it's a shame she isn't more together in her personal life.

I'd put her at number two on the list.

by Anonymousreply 8005/16/2014

R77, no, American Idol is definitely NOT a flop.

The purpose of American Idol is to give young people a career in music and allow them to make a living in music.

American Idol has surpassed that goal because not only are most, if not all, of the winners having a career in music and making their living in music, many of the runners-up, and those who came in 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th are also having a career in music and making their living in music.

by Anonymousreply 8105/16/2014

R81, do you work for AI? The purpose of the show is to make money for the producers.

by Anonymousreply 8205/16/2014

I hear you, r76, having seen and met Taylor more than once. His stage presence is electrifying and he performs non-stop for at least 90 minute (this was a solo tour, not LV).

HOWEVER, I've also seen Adam a number of times and believe me, he is incredible. The voice alone is other-worldly (or, as Roger Taylor of Queen said, 1 in a 100 million).

Taylor was the first Idol contestant to truly work the Nokia, honor the band, and dress to fit each theme week. Adam was the next and last.

Britney? The used and abused "Slave 4 U" (truth) Britney? Rihanna? The beholden-now-to-Jay-Z RiRi? Neither is what anyone should wish to emulate.

And to put any of the women in the category of Streisand, let alone say any is superior, is beyond ludicrous.

by Anonymousreply 8305/16/2014

As is true for all of television shows, r82, so I trust you comment on none?

by Anonymousreply 8405/16/2014

Good lord, it's a Frauvalanche in here.

The 'such a pretty face' fat girl who won last year was a great singer.

This year it's come down to Gina (spelled correctly on purpose) and Caleb, both power belters. Alex Preston, the guy voted out this week, was arguably the most talented contestant of the season and a friend of Alex and Sierra, the X-Factor winners.

by Anonymousreply 8505/16/2014

What's with all the Jordin Sparks "weight loss" stories lately? They even interviewed her on "Today". Who the fuck cares? This chick hasn't released an album since 2009 and all of her singles in the past 5 years have been total flops.

Is she even with RCA still?

by Anonymousreply 8605/16/2014

The Taylor Hicks fans are hilarious.

I've met him in professional circumstances several times and he was a grade a asshole. He got worse the less famous he got, too.

by Anonymousreply 8705/16/2014

[quote]the most talented contestant of the season and a friend of Alex and Sierra, the X-Factor winners.

How does he know them?

by Anonymousreply 8805/17/2014

I would put David cook second. I didn't watch Phillips' season and I hate that effing "Home" song.

by Anonymousreply 8905/17/2014

I wonder what Phillip Phillips's piss slit looks like. It must be ravaged from all the kidney stones he's had to pass.

by Anonymousreply 9005/17/2014

R89, so, judge a singer, songwriter, musician by just one song.

yeah, that's smart

by Anonymousreply 9105/17/2014

David Archuleta's vocal ability is at par with Josh Groban

by Anonymousreply 9205/18/2014

Let's also rank the runners-up based on vocals regardless of commercial success: 1. David Archuleta- very unique tone and nice range 2. Katharine McPhee- very pretty 3. Diana DeGarmo- can sustain high notes clearly 4. Adam Lambert- wide range for a male vocalist 5. Blake Lewis- unique beatboxing 6. Bo Bice- good stage presence 7. Clay Aiken- broadway vocals 8. Justin Guarini 9. Kree Harrison 10. Crystal Bowersox 11. Jessica Sanchez- just so-so 12. Lauren Alaina- wth was she doing in the top2?!?

by Anonymousreply 9305/18/2014

I did not win AI but I made a MAJOR impression. And you know what? I did not even have professional training back then.

by Anonymousreply 9405/18/2014

Uhm, they all sucked.

by Anonymousreply 9505/18/2014

[quote]9. Kree Harrison

Who dat?

by Anonymousreply 9605/18/2014

Has Clarkson done anything significant after Breakaway? I guess she used up all her talent in that album, all follow ups are just desperate attempts to repeat Breakaway.

by Anonymousreply 9705/18/2014

R96 From season 12 where mariah carey was a judge

by Anonymousreply 9805/18/2014

David Archuleta will come out of the closet the day his father dies.

by Anonymousreply 9905/18/2014

Fantasia is my all time favorite. I wish she could get her personal life in order.

by Anonymousreply 10005/18/2014

1. Phillips 2.. Clarkson

(distant) 3. Allen

They are the only three I've ever listened to after the show. Some of the others have talent (technically) but I'm not interested in listening to them.

by Anonymousreply 10105/18/2014

Fantasia's voice= 1000000 fingernails on chalkboard!

by Anonymousreply 10205/18/2014

R99 Maybe David's dad is not as mean as you think

by Anonymousreply 10305/18/2014

I think Kelly is a little bit overrated... Her vocals are not that great...

by Anonymousreply 10405/18/2014

[quote]David Archuleta will come out of the closet the day his father dies.

Well that's surprising if that's the only thing standing in his way, but I'm pretty sure he has other things hanging over him, like, oh I dunno--the entire Mormon Church?! His dad has no right to stand in judgment of anyone, anyway. I'm pretty sure he violated Mormon moral code with his massage parlor activities.

by Anonymousreply 10505/18/2014

Let's make assessments with every season:

Season 1- Kelly was so overrated. Her voice was so unstable at her lower register and a little pitchy at her upper range. Justin was better vocally, but Kelly obviously has the star quality needed.

Season 2- Ruben deserved to win. I don't get Clay. His voice is so broadway. I dunno.

Season 3- Fantasia was so polarizing. She was even answering back to Simon rudely when being criticized. Her voice is so chipmunkish. So like Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child, not really as unique as the judges were pointing out. Diana can sustain high notes clearly while Fantasia can't. Diana, however, was like Kelly because her lower register is not so stable. I also can't forget the fact that she was sabotaged in her "Don't Cry Out Loud" encore performance in the finale so that Fantasia would win.

Season 4- Carrie definitely deserved to win. I just don't get Bo Bice. Carrie's voice was unique, and she was so good despite having no vocal training prior to the competition although she lacked stage presence.

Season 5- Taylor Hicks was really my favorite winner. He deserved to win! He's the most quirky contestant ever. Kat McPhee was also good although she really can't beat Taylor's fanbase (Soul Patrol).

Season 6- Eeeeew I hate Jordin Sparks. Nothing special about her. I rooted for Blake Lewis because he had something new to contribute to the music industry. I hate Jordin.

Season 7- I love David Archuleta, but Cook also deserved his win. Best top 2 ever.

Season 8- I liked Kris Allen too. Adam was so overrated! He's only screaming in his upper range! Eeeeew can't stand him. And it was obvious from the audition that he's gay!

Season 9- I liked Lee DeWyze. He has artistry in him unlike Crystal.

Season 10- I hate this season.

Season 11- I also hated it.

Season 12- Candice didn't even deserve to be in the Top 10. She's a Season 9 reject and like Simon said, she has no star appeal. Kree should've won.

Season 13- Not worth watching. Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 10605/18/2014

You have terrible taste and know nothing about singing R106.

There is no such term as "pitchy" dawg. Obviously you are a fan, and fan's have favorites, but your descriptions of most all voices that you criticized, and the ones you liked, contain technically incorrect assertions.

Carrie Underwood has the unsupported lower register, she can only sing vowels and high notes. She is flat in her low register, and often sharp in her upper range. Clarkson always had the range and has developed the nuance and control to be the best and most versatile voice in pop music. Kelly Clarkson is still the greatest find of American Idol. Yes she does sing her voice ragged sometimes, but only because she is a spinto soprano with a whole other gear that 99.9% of singers don't have and she overuses it. To some she is over-rated, but to real singers and voice teachers her voice is phenomenal.

Adam Lambert does not always scream, he just has a polarizing voice. Fantastic range and power, but really cool when he slows it down too. Fantasia was indeed unique. She sounds like Diana Ross, Gladys Knight and a bit of Aretha combined, but she has her own style and when she does not push her voice outside her range, it is a beautiful soulful instrument. Crisp and sweet intonation, tasteful runs, great emotion and rhythmically exciting.

Candice Glover AND David Archuleta both had beautiful tone to their voice, Candice smoky, jazzy and rich, David like a raspy castrati.

Kris Allen and Lee Dewyze sound like everyone and anyone. Phillip Phillips may be derivative of Dave Mathews and others, but of the non-vocalists who won, he has the most artistry and style, the personal voice of a good musician/songwriter.

Scotty, Ruben, Taylor and Jordin are the least interesting and memorable winners. I love R&B, but Ruben is nothing special. Taylor Hicks is terrible. Jordin was the last of the girls who thought they could win by singing Whitney Houston and Aretha poorly that managed to win. Scotty, nor Laura Alaina were the best singers of their season.

Elliott Yamin, Daughtry, and Latoya London are the ones who should have made it to the finals in their seasons. Jennifer Hudson was far from ready when she was on AI. There was never a more clear cut winner than Fantasia from the start. That girl had a shimmering star in her voice and a wonderful performance style. It has somewhat devolved.

Of the runner-ups, Archuleta, Clay Aiken and Crystal Bowersox got my vote. Don't love any of them, but thought they deserved to win.

Carrie Underwood does have a unique sound, some great songs and deserves her success as a recording artist and is a huge draw in person. She still has a lot of problems when singing live, though she has improved.

Diana DeGarmo and her husband Ace were lucky to get the exposure for their future in community theatre. There are singers as good as they in any high school.

Simon Cowell said some years back that Kelly Clarkson was the best singer they had ever discovered by a mile, that Carrie would be the most successful and that Fantasia was his personal favorite. Sums up the top three pretty well. Phillip Phillips is the only one likely to join them at the top level of success.

Adam will always work but like Jennifer Hudson his voice bugs alot of people. They don't sell records, but have both had a couple great hits. They are stellar performers with impressive vocal abilities.

Elliot Yamin, Archuleta and especially Candice Glover could break through with an album still, but they are not performers people want to see on the VMA's, or in person.

David Cook is a nice guy, Kelly Pickler is lucky, and Melinda Doolittle is twenty feet from stardom, where she belongs.

by Anonymousreply 10705/18/2014

Kelly Clarkson is far from "the greatest pop star ever" (!!!), but this clip (her best performance from AI) shows why she's the best AI winner ever, and a genuinely fine singing star.

by Anonymousreply 10805/18/2014

OK I'm not gonna bother going through this thread after seeing how highly rated OP gave fucking Phillip Phillips? He's probably the weakest winner vocally. He can't sing for shit.

Candice Glover has the best voice with Fantasia and Kelly next then Ruben, Carrie and Jordin.

by Anonymousreply 10905/18/2014

Phillip Phillips is number one commercially. His songs have been used in tons of movies, TV shows, and commercials. His song was used in that NBC dating show, a realty commercial, Clint Eastwood's Trouble With the Curve and now in a bunch of new movies that came out this year. His new song Raging Fire is the theme song for Godzilla and is the song for the Godzilla music video.

by Anonymousreply 11105/18/2014

I agree that R106 has awful taste. I like R107's assessment. And here is info on which of the past winners has been the most commercially successful.

by Anonymousreply 11205/18/2014

R33-

[quote]I can categorically tell you that she DOES have a personality, and that it's a great one. She's actually hilarious. Unfortunately, it just doesn't come across all too well in her performances and public manner.

I met her at a party a few days after the "Sound of Music" debacle. When someone brought it up she turned stiff as a corpse and almost cried. You could tell she knew she wasn't prepared for that kind of live show. The C-list "famous" bitch that was mocking her performance was SHUT DOWN. After a few minutes she was back to normal- charming, self-effacing, and down to earth.

She's also incredibly gorgeous. I can understand why Dolly has taken her under her lady ham...I mean wing.

by Anonymousreply 11305/19/2014

Frankentasia should never have won, she is a drugged up whore. I'm surprised she is even still alive.

by Anonymousreply 11405/19/2014

Fantasia was the best. She knew how to perform and connect with an audience. She was the most artistic and innately, the smartest.

by Anonymousreply 11505/19/2014

R108 I don't agree! Fantasia is the best singer ever and this Summertime performance proves it!!!

by Anonymousreply 11605/19/2014

Among them it's only David Cook I wanted to have sex with...

by Anonymousreply 11705/19/2014

this performance blew them all away!!!

by Anonymousreply 11805/19/2014

Carrie Underwood was groomed from a very young age, she was a fixture in the beauty pageant circuit and she did receive vocal training and stage singing, dancing...She was not a newbie to competitions like AI

by Anonymousreply 11905/19/2014

Carrie graduated magna cum laude (Journalism)... She's not just talented but also very bright!

by Anonymousreply 12005/20/2014

Carrie Underwood was a farm girl in rural Oklahoma.

She was quite a bit heavier in weight on AI.

I doubt she was in pageants or groomed or had singing/dancing lessons.

by Anonymousreply 12105/20/2014

Never saw the show when Fantasia was on, but I've bought each of her CDs. For me, unquestionably the best thing to come out of the show.

by Anonymousreply 12205/20/2014

Taylor Hicks is the best!

by Anonymousreply 12305/20/2014

R121 come on! Carrie almost signed with Capitol Record in 1996. She was 14 and already a veteran at talent shows and country fairs.

by Anonymousreply 12405/20/2014

I challenge any of them to outsing this girl in this performance

by Anonymousreply 12505/20/2014

The show is owned by 19 Entertainment, who in turn owns the singers for a while after the show. Anyone who can get a record deal on their own is generally not going to bother with AI.

by Anonymousreply 12605/20/2014

Any contestant with any dream of winning should begin writing lyrics as soon as possible. The pattern has been to have the first album be entirely written by pro song writers. The following albums usually have about 1/4 written by the artist. Artists should lobby to put out a second album within a year of the first while the iron is hot and their fan base is in the mode of requesting their music on the radio and buying their music. A lot of Idol contestants fall off the radar between the first and second album because they are spaced so far apart.

by Anonymousreply 12705/20/2014

Some undeserved Kelly hate here. It's clear she is the best singer to come out of AI and she earned winning the first year of the show.

by Anonymousreply 12805/20/2014

I love David Cook. My only problem with him is when he makes ugly face when singing glory notes...

by Anonymousreply 12905/20/2014

kris allen and phillip2x also make ugly face when singing high notes

by Anonymousreply 13005/20/2014

I wanna have sex with David Archuleta as well

by Anonymousreply 13105/20/2014

My gaydar goes PING with Taylor Hicks!

by Anonymousreply 13205/20/2014

The problem is that these singers show amazing promise on the show and then release the dullest first albums possible.

by Anonymousreply 13305/20/2014

who the fuck are all these nobodies?

by Anonymousreply 13405/20/2014

R107 really does have it right about Clarkson. She tends to sing her voice ragged, but her instrument is incredible. Any professional vocalist or teacher can attest to this. I'm a singing actor on Broadway, and I know many of today's best, beltiest singers who shy away from performing Clarkson's stuff because her range is so ridiculous.

And this is not even taking into account the style of her voice, which is a completely separate phenomenon. Her voice has a palette of textures, nuances, and colors that few singers use nowadays. The fact that she can take any derivative, generic piece of crap song and turn it into an ultra-listenable anthem is a testament to this.

by Anonymousreply 13505/21/2014

Top-Earning AI Alum of 2013

1. Carrie Underwood ($31 million) 2. Kelly Clarkson ($7 million) 3. Phillip Phillips ($5 million, tie) 3. Adam Lambert ($5 million, tie) 5. Daughtry ($4 million) 6. Scotty McCreery ($3 million) 7. Taylor Hicks ($2.5 million) 8. Fantasia Barrino ($1.5 million, tie) 8. Kellie Pickler ($1.5 million, tie) 10. Katharine McPhee ($1 million, tie) 10. Jennifer Hudson ($1 million, tie)

some surprising entry like Taylor Hicks, obviously doing very well despite little media coverage.

by Anonymousreply 13605/21/2014

Kris Allen was the hottest winner.

by Anonymousreply 13705/21/2014

R137 He is cute, and I think he should have a better career than where he is now, but not sure he was motivated enough to have a bigger impact. He seemed to be content after he won the idol and had a decent following year.

by Anonymousreply 13805/21/2014

R136, he recently had a long term gig at a Las Vegas hotel for 6 months or a year that was very successful where he performed several times per week.

He also tours. His show is really great - I saw a filming of the whole concert on a cable TV channel.

by Anonymousreply 13905/21/2014

Fantasia has been my favorite. Too bad she had bad advice and followed her trashy origins, unable to rise above it. With proper handling she could have had a very solid career.

by Anonymousreply 14005/21/2014

I find Fantasia challenging to look at as far a physical looks and presence.

by Anonymousreply 14105/21/2014

I think Candace will be number 12.

How will Caleb or JenA/gena/Ginny/ Jenny rank?

by Anonymousreply 14205/21/2014

Fantasia is unquestionably the most gifted performer to come through A.I. if you see her onstage she has star quality. Saw her in "Color Purple" and "After Midnight" and she was fabulous.

by Anonymousreply 14305/21/2014

I was looking at iTunes charts 5-6 months ago and saw Fantasia had several #1 and top 10 hits in the Caribbean and Africa. She is doing well with black audiences internationally. I thought her career went belly up. I was proven wrong.

Radio was very favorable to American Idol contestants in the early seasons. Now it is very hard for them to get radio play which is the life blood of successful careers. You can't have a million people buy your song without it being played on the radio and if they aren't buying then you can't have a concert tour. There are currently no American Idol contestants in the top 40. Only Daughtry was in the top 40 in the last several months.

by Anonymousreply 14405/21/2014

Carrie is definitely better than Kelly! Carrie managed to belt a 12-second note in Angels Brought Me Here despite being sick! also a 14-second note in Out of Nothing At All during the top 3 night! Kelly can't hold a note longer than 3 seconds even when she's not sick! Boo!!!

by Anonymousreply 14505/21/2014

R132 Please don't confuse Taylor Hicks with LAUTNER! T. Hicks is not gay!

by Anonymousreply 14605/21/2014

[quote]There are currently no American Idol contestants in the top 40. Only Daughtry was in the top 40 in the last several months.

Not true. Phillip Phillip is on the rodeo all the damn time. He now has a third song in constant rotation called Raging Fire which is on the Godzilla soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 14705/21/2014

“The platform of American Idol changed my life,” says Taylor Hicks, who now owns a restaurant in his native Alabama.

Wow, Hicks went from singer to food slinger.

by Anonymousreply 14805/21/2014

Candice is the worst winner ever! It was so ironic that someone who got rejected twice in the same show actually won!

by Anonymousreply 14905/21/2014

Justin Bieber is more popular than all of them combined!

by Anonymousreply 15005/21/2014

Just like Caleb who got rejected twice is now going to win.

by Anonymousreply 15105/21/2014

2 Flop Seasons in a row! American Idol should reformat!

by Anonymousreply 15205/21/2014

Carrie should do a country pop crossover so that she can beat Shania Twain's worldwide record!!!

by Anonymousreply 15305/21/2014

Say what you will about American Idol but has any of The Voice's winners ever gone on to a successful, hit-making career? Other than Cassadee Pope?

by Anonymousreply 15405/21/2014

I like Kris Allen. He's much more talented, authentic and down to earth than the annoying fame whore Adam Lambert

by Anonymousreply 15505/21/2014

R148, Taylor has singing gigs all the time all over the U.S.

Plus he recently had a year long residency singing gig at a Las Vegas hotel where he performed several times per week for a year and made $1.5 million dollars.

by Anonymousreply 15605/21/2014

R147 Phillip Phillips is currently 73 in radio airplay.

by Anonymousreply 15705/21/2014

Phillip Phillips' songs are played constantly and daily on several SiriusXM radio channels. He is very popular and his songs get very frequent airplay.

He has also gone on tour with Bruce Springsteen and a couple other very famous groups.

by Anonymousreply 15805/21/2014

I must be getting old because I found nothing appealing about Idol this year. That fact Caleb. Somebody needs to tip that cow over and slaughter it. Poor Jena Irene. She's a poster child for down syndrome. They could've skipped a season. They could have done 100 different things instead of putting this shit fest on the air. Shame on Idol and Fox. They've turned millions of people away from their network. Thank God they still have the NFL.

by Anonymousreply 15905/21/2014

Phillip Phillps won the lottery with his corination song Home. No other Idol was given a commercial song that made it on radio and promoted on Olympics.

At the time PP made sure to tell everyone the song was not the kind of music that he wanyed reptrsenting him. i bet he got told to shut up and make another.

I do like the song, probably because I like Mumford.

by Anonymousreply 16005/21/2014

1. Kelly Clarkson: she had an interesting voice, some great hits and honestly she had the benefit of being the first.

2. Carrie Underwood: As someone else put it she has a personality and she's a great singer ... I do hate that she looks like everyone else. I don't even like country music and I am happy to see her still hustling.

3. Fantasia: She is completely in her feelings every time she performs which makes her great. Despite her issues (part inexperience from having to perform nightly and not being able to and health related from NOT taking care of her voice or learning how to properly sing forcing her to have throat surgery so early) most critics agree she nailed her role in The Color Purple. Some people hate how expressive she is, a lot of people do eat it up.

by Anonymousreply 16105/21/2014

Fanatsia is rough around the edges, but you have to love her insane energy.

by Anonymousreply 16205/21/2014

Vocally, Kelly can't hold a candle to Carrie

by Anonymousreply 16305/21/2014

true about Phillip Phillips, I stopped watching AI 4 years ago so I had no idea who he was, but that damn song Home was so massive on the radio I found out he was AI winner, lol

by Anonymousreply 16405/21/2014

Loved Phillip Phillips performance of Raging Fire tonight on American Idol. He's a dynamic exciting performer and singer.

Love his raspy voice and stage presence

by Anonymousreply 16505/22/2014

Okay now that Caleb wonm he's the worst winner ever! Zero personality, zero charisma, zero star quality, zero marketability, zero appeal... Yuck!!!

by Anonymousreply 16605/22/2014

Way to go Kris Allen! You're no longer in the bottom 3 winners!

Bottom 3: Candice Lee Caleb

by Anonymousreply 16705/22/2014

I don't understand Caleb. What true rocker would have the Rachel haircut from Friends?

by Anonymousreply 16805/22/2014

R168

A rocker with a head like a St. Bernard. He needs a bit of hair camouflage. Not everyone looks like Roger Daltry ya know.

Caleb has a bit too much "hangin in my parents basement singing REAL ROCK!" lame satan finger throwing anachronistic vibe about him, but he has a legitimately good rock voice. Pretty fine singer who can still get better. So far he is a bit of an ass, but he didn't conform much and still won. His voice did the work. You could tell form the start he would win. I rate him above Lee, D.Cook, Ruben, Kris, and Ms. Sparks.

R163. Vocally Kelly can set Carrie on fire. They are very different, always compared, but there is no comparison about who is the better vocalist. Carrie has a nice tone, long strong power notes and is blonde. Kelly is one of the great voices and vocalists of our time. She has too many gifts to count.

by Anonymousreply 16905/27/2014

Carrie Underwood singing one of her power ballads, with power. As I stated upthread she can only sing vowels comfortably, or rather concentrates on them. (Patti LuPone does this too.) She sacrifices a lot of lyrical content and feeling in building the song's vocal momentum. Her non belting voice IS pretty, but unsteady, so she likes to get to the power singing and then repeats it until this sad song has not much feeling. Her voice is wound up but her sound is tight. She impresses. She has some great recordings. There are many worse voices. But she is not a great singer.

Next I will post Kelly Clarkson covering the same song. Y'all can decide for yourselves.

"I Know You Won't."

by Anonymousreply 17005/27/2014

Kelly Clarkson. She sings without gowns or shoes half the time. She jokes. Her voice gets ragged. She uses melisma, runs, crescendos, whispers, gutsy rasp and slicing through spinto soprano techniques. Sometimes too many. But she sings the lyric with nuance and feeling, and uses her powerful voice with meaning. She is not as polished as Carrie, but Kelly is the girl with more candles on her cake.

by Anonymousreply 17105/27/2014

Daughtry is hawt!

by Anonymousreply 17205/27/2014

The tone of a singers voice is what we love or not. For most that is all that matters. Kelly has a beautiful instrument, the greater range and gift, but some prefer Underwood's tone and dresses.

Again.

by Anonymousreply 17305/27/2014

I would rather listen to Justin Bieber than that ugly Caleb with no X Factor

by Anonymousreply 17405/28/2014

Even Mikalah Gordon can beat that Caleb whatever.. eeew

by Anonymousreply 17505/30/2014

David Cook, Kris Allen and Taylor Hicks are the only ones I wanna have sex with...

by Anonymousreply 17606/22/2014

Carrie Underwood's voice hurts by ears.

I find it very grating, screeching, screaming, and difficult to listen to.

by Anonymousreply 17706/22/2014

R177 Carrie's voice hurts your ears? Then what do you call Fantasia's voice? Nails on chalkboard!!!

by Anonymousreply 17806/22/2014

David Archuleta is the only one who doesn't scream in his upper register

by Anonymousreply 17906/22/2014

Kelly is a little overrated

by Anonymousreply 18006/24/2014

I want to have sex with David Archuleta

by Anonymousreply 18106/24/2014

I wanna have sex with David Cook also

by Anonymousreply 18207/13/2014

I also wanna have sex with Taylor Hicks!

by Anonymousreply 18307/13/2014

David Cook performed at Epcot for a food and wine festival last week. We remembered him from Idol and attended two of his short performances. Way back when, I thought he was going to be a huge pop/rock solo star, like a new Bryan Adams or Richard Marx. Didn't happen.

He's a truly excellent singer. He covered Journey's Separate Ways and Led Zep's Rock and Roll and even though he joked about how difficult those songs are, he sang them effortlessly. He has no stage presence, which is odd. He's very charming and funny between songs, but keeps his eyes shut tight while singing and doesn't engage the audience. I remember him being one of the more animated Idols, so something has changed.

Apparently he has a new single being released next week, but didn't sing it at his sets at Epcot, which doesn't make any sense. If you're self-releasing music - no deal with a label - shouldn't you be all over the promotion for it?

by Anonymousreply 18411/14/2014

Clarkson has the best voice. Underwood is right up there as well. The two of them have a good number of hits between them. But Kelly can sing country - look what she did for the song with Jason Aldean. Either way they are both winners.

Taylor Hicks is the worst one

by Anonymousreply 18511/15/2014

Yeah Clarkson's material sucks. She doesn't have a single thing I like but I can admit she's got a great voice. Though I understand she didn't have the most classic voice and wasn't the most talented but my favorite was Brooke White. I really like her voice and she chose a lot of material I liked.

by Anonymousreply 18611/15/2014

He didn't win, but Adam Lambert has been playing the Freddie Mercury role with the remaining members of Queen on tour for a while, a couple of summers at least.

Another runner-up is starring on the CBS procedural Scorpion: Katharine McPhee.

by Anonymousreply 18711/15/2014

K McFee's talent is clearly oral per the rumors of how she gets jobs.

by Anonymousreply 18811/15/2014

[quote]Carrie Underwood's voice hurts by ears.

Are you serious? She's great!

by Anonymousreply 18911/15/2014

Clarkson and Underwood are the best singers. They can really sing anything. Underwood is underrated. She's a country singer, but can also sing rock, pop, and standards.

Fantasia is very, very talented, but more in a Patti Labelle-ish crazed live-performance way than a make-radio- hits way. She also has a reputation for a crazy personal life and a family which relies on her financially, which makes people who want to work with her often end up shying away from her.

by Anonymousreply 19011/16/2014

There is only one American Idol and her name is Kelly Clarkson.

by Anonymousreply 19111/16/2014

I thought Ruben was better than Clay, at the time, during season 2. But since then Clay improved and Ruben, well, where is he?

In Season 4, I thought Bo Bice was outstanding, one of the best they ever had on that show, while Carrie was dull, wooden and robotic. Since then of course she has gone on to a huge career while Bo has struggled.

Chris Daughtry finished 4th and yet arguably has had a more successful career than either Taylor Hicks or Katharine McPhee.

In season 1 I thought Tamyra Gray was excellent, and I can't remember what season she was on, but Vonzell Solomon was really good. Yet what happened to them?

I can only conclude that being on or even winning American Idol doesn't guarantee future success. Plenty of stars made it big on their own, without that show.

by Anonymousreply 19211/16/2014

Kelly Clarkson has more talent in her baby finger than Taylor Swift has.

by Anonymousreply 19311/16/2014

Tamyra Gray married one of the guys from Color Me Badd, a boy band from the 90s. The guy who looked like Kenny G.

Ruben's career was ruined by Clive Davis trying to make him into a hip-hop guy instead of a new Luther Vandross. Nobody was buying that. He released a good CD a few years ago (with excellent covers of "More Than Words" by Extreme and The Beatles' "Long and Winding Road"), but his career was long gone by then.

Clive Davis was NOT good for the Idols. The only reason Carrie Underwood did so well is that he turned her over immediately to the country division of the label and he didn't interfere. If Clive had his way, Kelly Clarkson was supposed to be Christina Aguilera, with sexy clothes and backup dancers. Her first single was exactly that, then she told him that was BS and she wasn't doing it anymore.

by Anonymousreply 19411/16/2014

Candice Glover, Kelly Clarkson Ruben and Fantasia are the most talented 3 winners vocally. Jordin Sparks and Carrie Underwood come in after them. The other winners sucked and got lucky.

It's a shame that only Kelly and Carrie had any long lasting chart success. Candice, Fantasia, Ruben and Jordin should have bigger careers too but most of the public these days strangely prefer autotune shit or "white soul singers".

by Anonymousreply 19511/16/2014

OP = Kelly Clarkson.

by Anonymousreply 19611/16/2014

I loved Fantasia on the show but after she won she kind of went ghetto.

by Anonymousreply 19711/16/2014

She "went ghetto" because Clive Davis insisted on it. That's the material he solicited for her releases. "Baby Mama" and "Hood Boy".

by Anonymousreply 19811/16/2014

Clive Davis could never figure out what to do with Jennifer Hudson's recording career either. She's incredibly lucky that Dreamgirls came along to sustain her career for the past few years.Luckily, he's out of power and her album release this year is a good start towards establishing a style.

by Anonymousreply 19911/17/2014

David Cook is most fuckable!

by Anonymousreply 20012/23/2014

Underwood has a lesser instrument than Clarkson and she sings country music in a strident and frequently unattractive tone.

by Anonymousreply 20112/23/2014

i wanna fuck David Cook!

by Anonymousreply 20212/23/2014

Frankentasia is hideous, that thing shouldn't even be seen in public.

by Anonymousreply 20312/23/2014

R203 Candice is more hideous!

by Anonymousreply 20412/24/2014

I wanna see David Cook naked!

by Anonymousreply 20512/24/2014

cute as ever

by Anonymousreply 20612/25/2014

When will David Archuleta come out? His daddy was arrested for paying for sex, being gay can't be that big a deal after that scandal.

by Anonymousreply 20712/25/2014

I always called Ruben 'The Singing Couch', no stage presence at all.

Kelly Clarkson was the most versatile and it was exciting to watch her grow and become a star through the season.

I predict multiple bankruptcy filings in Fantasia's future.

I stopped watching years ago because it became all about holding the longest and loudest note. Lung power isn't all it takes to make a star.

by Anonymousreply 20812/25/2014

R203 Fantasia has unique voice

by Anonymousreply 20912/26/2014

I want david archuleta to do porn

by Anonymousreply 21012/26/2014

No one's talking about the latest winner

by Anonymousreply 21112/27/2014

People, if you respond to OP it will be like telling the entire world you a fucked up loser in life.

by Anonymousreply 21212/27/2014

Fantasia is only 30? She doesn't look her age!

by Anonymousreply 21312/27/2014

no hotty this season

by Anonymousreply 21401/10/2015

it gets duller every season

by Anonymousreply 21501/11/2015

the only one i like is carrie underwood.

kelly clarkson is pretty awful.

the rest don't remember.

also like clay aiken, but he didn't win.

by Anonymousreply 21605/30/2015
