Happy Birthday David Bowie!!!

66 years old today. AND he has a new album out in a few months.

by Anonymousreply 6501/12/2013

I'm under no illusions that it'll be as great as his earlier work, but it's better than nothing.

Even in his golden years he still gives us the odd gem.

by Anonymousreply 101/08/2013

He gives Capricorns a good name.

by Anonymousreply 201/08/2013

by Anonymousreply 301/08/2013

Was he paying for all the 'where is he now' articles that have been published for the past three years?

by Anonymousreply 401/08/2013

always hated his pretentious ugly warblings

by Anonymousreply 501/08/2013

He has a huge and devoted fan base, R4. He doesn't need to artificially generate interest.

by Anonymousreply 601/08/2013

Who's the woman in the video?

by Anonymousreply 701/08/2013

Is that a new image for the album cover? Wikipedia has a different, and it shows him using his old 1977 album cover with a box over his face.

R5 = idiotic cunt.

by Anonymousreply 1001/08/2013

Happy Birthday, David Bowie (66)

Happy Birthday, Elvis Presley (78)

by Anonymousreply 1101/08/2013

woman in the video is Bjork

by Anonymousreply 1201/08/2013

lol, no it's not.

by Anonymousreply 1301/08/2013

his work is self-consciously arty and lacks realness, there's no pain in his work or vocals and he's ugly to look at.

by Anonymousreply 1401/08/2013

He's the epitome of cool, R14. He doesn't do pain.

by Anonymousreply 1501/08/2013

he sounds very old

by Anonymousreply 1601/08/2013

r16, I was about to say the same thing. I know he's old, but it's hard to listen to.

by Anonymousreply 1701/08/2013

his songs are flat, there's no real energy, it's like Broadway rock.

by Anonymousreply 1801/08/2013

It IS Bjork in the video.

by Anonymousreply 1901/08/2013

66 is old, no way around it.

by Anonymousreply 2001/08/2013

hated his image, there's no passion in his vocals, and his songs mostly suck especially that Changes and Major Tom shit!

by Anonymousreply 2101/08/2013

r5 I'm with you. I couldn't make it past :41 will always love Suffragette City and Young American.

plus, if it wasn't for him I would not have been able to see Ewan McGregor naked in Velvet Goldmine

by Anonymousreply 2201/08/2013

[post by racist shit-stain # 2 removed.]

by Anonymousreply 2301/08/2013

his songs aren't real rock, there's no passion. He's like English Tin Pan Alley, like show tunes. I liked "Young Americans" but he was trying to copy us and it really didn't ring true either.

by Anonymousreply 2401/08/2013

[quote]It IS Bjork in the video.

I didn't recognize her. WTF happened to her?!

by Anonymousreply 2501/08/2013

Wait, I take it back. I still don't think that's Bjork. It looks nothing like her, stocking or not.

by Anonymousreply 2601/08/2013

He changed the fucking world. Deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 2701/08/2013

He's so straight!

by Anonymousreply 2801/08/2013

Well the do have panty hose on thier faces..

by Anonymousreply 2901/08/2013

His seventies stuff was pure genius. Name one artist that have delivered something as cultivated as Aladdin Sane.

70's FM rock was legendary and there were so many gems to discover. Music was a full-time hobby while living in the 70's. Don't judge that era with the AM stuff because there was another world on the FM stations.

Happy Birthday David Bowie!

by Anonymousreply 3001/08/2013

It's not Bjork, goddamnit!

by Anonymousreply 3101/08/2013

R13 that bjork thing was a joke lol

That woman might be his first wife, Angela. Seems possible since that video seems to be referring to his time living in Germany in the 70's. divorced in 1980

by Anonymousreply 3201/08/2013

He's using his 1977 album cover. Why?

by Anonymousreply 3301/08/2013

exactly how did he change the world, jackass at r27? Grow up, he's a fucking pop singer, that's all.

by Anonymousreply 3401/08/2013

R34 is an idiot and does not understand the transformative influences of popular culture even as she wears branded clothing and snaps her gum to some newcome outrage.

But the video and song are brilliant. Fucking brilliant. Never mind what was before, then. Certainly a deeper cut than other aging rockers who don't reflect their current outlooks and times.

by Anonymousreply 3501/08/2013

To Bjork or not to Bjork

by Anonymousreply 3601/08/2013

In his prime.

by Anonymousreply 3701/08/2013

Remember when he quit touring forever?

by Anonymousreply 3801/08/2013

A thread on Bowie can't be complete without a photo of his original teeth:

by Anonymousreply 3901/08/2013

Lots of original teef in this video.

by Anonymousreply 4001/08/2013

r35, you're so fucking perceptive and so fucking deep.

by Anonymousreply 4101/08/2013

[quote]exactly how did he change the world, jackass at [R27]?

The Rocky Horror Show was inspired by Bowie.

Song structure, drag, androgyny, etc.

by Anonymousreply 4201/08/2013

David Bowie should have slipped out the side door in the mid80s, preferably before he did the "Dancing in the Street" video with Mick Jagger. (Who would have thought Mick could out-camp him so easily?)

Anyone still frothed up over him is just being sentimental, which is fine but a ridiculous thing to get shrill about. He does have a huge number of creepy true believer type fans though.

He lost me when he claimed that the gay stuff was just a silly phase.

by Anonymousreply 4301/08/2013

He was THE ambiguously sexual glitter rock superstar of the seventies. His fans were insane about him, worshipped him.

He flaunted his gayness (or bisexuality) until it wasn't fashionable anymore. Then he made a turnaround and said that it was all for show. A subdued photograph of him was on the cover of the Rolling Stone with the title "David Bowie Straight."

I liked some of his songs, but was never a big fan.

by Anonymousreply 4401/08/2013

I get the whole bi then straight-it-was-all-for-stage thing not being honorable.

But Bowie's influence on fashion, sexual politics, and the visual enhancing of musical performance affected much of pop culture. I guess you had to be there to see its immediate then growing impact.

Yes, he's 66 and younger people may discount all that, because it just IS and they don't know what set things in motion.

And I still get the same feeling I did the first time I heard Changes...that song is about me.

by Anonymousreply 4501/08/2013

To paraphrase Picasso on Matisse, “In the end, there is only Bowie.”

Simple but great song. I'm looking forward to the album. And a tour. I'm in the camp that wants to McCartney and the Stones to retire gracefully--but I know Bowie won't tour unless he can do it 100%. He's a perfectionist and protective of his legacy, he won't go out on the road if he can't perform. So if he can do it, I'll go. I just turned 40, I'm feeling the mortal coils more and more...Bowie won't be around forever.

[post by racist shit-stain # 2 removed.]

by Anonymousreply 4701/09/2013

the glitter and androgyny was to distract from the fact he was a shitty singer, whose songs don't rock, they're like Tin Pan Alley.

by Anonymousreply 4801/09/2013

"He ugly, he ugly, his mama say he ugly!

by Anonymousreply 4901/09/2013

This thread is proof, yet again, that eldergays are ruining this place.

I get so tired of reading idiots yammering on about music when it's clear they know nothing of what they speak.

by Anonymousreply 5001/09/2013

He was part of the whole glam rock movement back then.

Sadly we do live in a 'yeah, but what have you done lately?' culture where the past is something people easily dismiss.

I don't think it's Bjork in the video, because Bjork has no mole on the upper right side between upper lip and nose. It would also not make any sense regarding the message of the video and song.

by Anonymousreply 5101/09/2013

Hate his crappy overplayed songs and ugly mug.

by Anonymousreply 5201/09/2013

r52 - We know. You've posted that 9 times already.

by Anonymousreply 5501/09/2013

He was so good at being a puppet.

by Anonymousreply 5601/09/2013

did he have sex with underage girls?

by Anonymousreply 5701/11/2013

he used the gay community to sell records. He wasn't really bi, I think it was just to be trendy and get attention.

by Anonymousreply 5801/11/2013

This thread is filled with fucking idiots.

by Anonymousreply 5901/11/2013

Bowie's new bit of music, "I still look 18 when I sing with my head up my ass" will be another flop because he's old, dour and hideous. He a poser. He was only popular in the olden days because everyone was stoned and tipsy. Face it, the old praying mantis looked normal when viewed on an acid trip.

by Anonymousreply 6001/11/2013

I fucked him.

by Anonymousreply 6101/11/2013

[quote]he's old, dour and hideous

Of course, R60, you would know from your own experience.

by Anonymousreply 6201/12/2013

[R59] I thought is was common knowledge that Datalounge was for older people.

by Anonymousreply 6301/12/2013

I remember when he and Elton John first entered the music scene (yes, I'm old) but those were glorious and creative times for music. People assumed at the time that Bowie was gay and Elton was the straight one. At the time, I was shocked when a coworker told me that her bf (who was a popular LA DJ) told her that both were sluts but it was the other way around--- Bowie was a pussyhound and Elton was a male slut.

Of course, he turned out to be right although I believe Bowie was bisexual. He hit on an ex-bf of mine in a nightclub.

by Anonymousreply 6401/12/2013

"The most common misconception, or widely held theory, is that the woman accompanying David is the wonderfully nutty Icelandic singer, Björk! It’s not, it is in fact (Tony) Oursler’s wife, painter Jacqueline Humphries."
