Mayor Toronto Rob Ford returns to court today to appeal ruling that ordered him out of office

The Canadian Press

Published Monday, Jan. 7, 2013

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford will back in court today to appeal a ruling that ordered him out of office.

A judge ruled in November that Ford violated conflict of interest laws by soliciting for his private football foundation using official city letterhead.

But Ford's lawyer, Alan Lenczner, says the mayor shouldn't be found guilty because it was a genuine error in judgment.

If Ford loses his appeal, he says he'll run in a byelection if council chooses to call one.

He'll lose the appeal. No question.

[quote]His best bud is PM Stephen Harper.

What? They may have met a couple of times but I hardly think they're the best of friends.

by Anonymousreply 201/07/2013

Anyone from TO here who can tell us what is going on there?

by Anonymousreply 301/07/2013

Both Harper and Ford hate the gays. Ford invited Harper over to his home for a BBQ - need we say more.

by Anonymousreply 401/07/2013

Ford solicited donations, using official "mayor" letterhead, for some youth charity he's associated with. Apparently that's totally against the conflict of interest rules.

On another thread, someone said he's got a coke problem and was really in rehab while on a recent vakay. He resembles Chris Farley.

I'm surprised that Toronto would elect someone like that. We Americans elect idiots all the time, but Canada has traditionally had a better record than us.

by Anonymousreply 601/07/2013

r5, technically, that's not why he's been ruled to be removed from office.

At a council meeting where this was on the voting agenda (IIRC, whether he should pay money back was part of the discussion) he not only didn't abstain from the discussion itself, he also voted on the measure. That was the conflict of interest breach that got him tossed.

"I'm surprised that Toronto would elect someone like that"

When he was elected it was dubbed the "revenge of the 'burbs."

Idiot Jehovah's Witness frau at work thinks he's being ganged up on because he refused to attend the Pride parade. Of course she loves him.

by Anonymousreply 901/07/2013

I have my doubts that he will win this. Some of his allies are abandoning him and I wonder if he has enough votes to get "reappointed" if he gets the boot.

Do any other T.O. people know if Mammolitti is still in the Ford corner?

by Anonymousreply 1001/07/2013

Well bad on your co-worker since the co-worker I had who was JW would not even speak a politicians name. She said she had to be neutral and would discuss nothing political even pot holes or school issues. Do they have jack JWs the way they have jack Mormons?

by Anonymousreply 1101/07/2013

The judge seemed overly sympathetic to Ford today - probably because Ford wasn't testifying so couldn't make an ass of himself.

Loved that Ford's lawyer defended him by explaining he has "a high school education", ie he's too dumb to understand conflict of interest.

by Anonymousreply 1201/07/2013

r12, so his lawyers have a high school education, too?

r10, that spineless fuck jumped ship months ago. Everyone was laughing about it on Twitter at the time.

by Anonymousreply 1301/07/2013

[quote]Do any other T.O. people know if Mammolitti is still in the Ford corner?

No. He bailed on Ford the same day he lost the court case.

by Anonymousreply 1401/08/2013

Just realized that I reversed the first 2 words in my thread title.

by Anonymousreply 1501/08/2013

R15, Gloria, honey, you can get a new ping pong ball in the cupboard.

What R11 said. As a JW she's not even allowed to vote. Tell that to the hypocritical witch the next time she mentions it.

by Anonymousreply 1701/09/2013

OP,

Why would ANYONE here give a fuck?

by Anonymousreply 1801/09/2013

R18, are you the anti-Canadian troll?

Many people here have been following the story because it's an example of a conservative fatso who is getting hist just desserts.

by Anonymousreply 1901/09/2013

Why has the right wing gained so much power in Canada? I always thought Canadians were the progressive European-style socialists of North America, is this just a false stereotype or what changed? Could some Canadians please answer these questions for me.

by Anonymousreply 2001/09/2013

R20, not a lot has changed. There have always been Conservatives in Canada, just as there are conservatives in Europe too. Cycles occur in Canadian politics as they do elsewhere.

There are some Conservative politicians in Canada, yes, but remember that most of the provincial governments are not Conservative. The biggest change has been at the Federal level where there has been a Conservative Prime Minister for 6 years, but that could change in 2015.

by Anonymousreply 2101/09/2013

Oddly enough, r20, Ford was elected largely by immigrants and ethnics, if-you-will, in the "inner-suburbs". Their politics can be eerily similar to garden-variety conservatives in the US and elsewhere - hate gays, rah-rah family! and we don't wanna pay taxes!

by Anonymousreply 2201/09/2013

It's not surprising that people vote in Conservatives from time to time - people like to change governments and have variety. You can't have perpetual Liberal governments. No country keeps the same party in power forever if they are a democracy. Cycles happen.

Hopefully Justin Trudeau will become Prime Minister in 2015 and shift things away from the Conservatives again.

by Anonymousreply 2301/09/2013

And yet R22 they never seen connect the fact that they left the countries where people have always voted that way...because they were shitholes.
