Shaquille O'Neal Peeing Facebook Post Spurs Anti-Gay Responses

Shaquille O'Neal may not have intended to spawn an anti-gay thread on Facebook, but that is exactly what happened after the former basketball star posted an image about restroom etiquette.

On Wednesday, O'Neal posted a cartoon about proper peeing protocol at the urinal. In the drawing, one man uses the urinal directly next to another man, even though many others are available. "This is an automatic fight in my book.......LMFAO," O'Neal wrote.

Although his comment may not have been intended to be offensive, many of the responses to the post were decidedly anti-gay.

"He shouldnt [sic] have wandered into a gay bar," wrote one Facebook user. "That definitely makes him gay!!!" wrote another. "Thats because he wants something gay," responded another.

Some respondents, however, voiced their disapproval of the thread. "Glad to know you like to start hate dialogue against gay people shaq just lost a fan here," one wrote.

Here's a screen grab of the cartoon posted to Shaquille O'Neal's Facebook page. (see link)

Towleroad notes that one of the cartoon characters in O'Neal's post is "depicted striding in a swishy manner." Commentators also noted this. "He walks funny, too!! - Notice his arms!?!" wrote one user. "[You] can tell hes gay by the way he walkin in the middle pic," commented another.

"Though he may have not intended it, the post, which points out a common men's room faux pas avoided by straight and gay men alike, has encouraged and produced hateful dialogue against the latter," Towleroad writes.

O'Neal's intentions may be unclear, but the basketball pro has previously advocated on behalf of LGBT rights and anti-bullying campaigns.

In October 2011, O'Neal partnered with the NBA and the American Federation of Teachers for GLAAD's "Amplify Your Voice!" PSA series against bullying.

“The NBA and Shaquille O’Neal are changing the landscape of sports by reminding players and fans that homophobia and anti-gay bullying are unacceptable – whether on the court, or in the classroom,” Mike Thompson, acting president of GLAAD, said at the time.

I don't think he meant it to be any kind of gay joke. He's always been pro-gay.

I also can't stand when guys use the urinal right next to me when there are others they could use. It's creepy.

by Anonymousreply 101/04/2013

from what I've heard from some guys who work in sports, Shaq's height doesn't correspond to his, uhhh, size, so don't flatter yourself, little Shaq

by Anonymousreply 201/04/2013

Does ANYONE not feel kinda creeped out and irked when someone takes the next urinal over when there are several available? It's a GUY rule, not a GAY rule. This is a tempest in a teapot.

by Anonymousreply 301/04/2013

I think the responses are homophobic but not what Shaq is saying.

I also can't stand when the are other stalls available and they come next to me. Granted, it doesn't happen that often. The one that really annoys me and is common is being on an empty subway, someone comes in and sits next to me. I always think: weirdo or psycho.

by Anonymousreply 401/04/2013

It's funny but I bet there are a ton of straight guys who wonder how hung he is? Straight guys are about as obsessed with size as we are.

by Anonymousreply 501/04/2013

Stupid. Not a gay thing. Guys like to piss with some privacy.

by Anonymousreply 601/04/2013

Richard Lewis says Shaq has a baguette

What place has that many urinals side by side anyway? Only stadiums, right? Even major airports might only have 4 urinals side by side and 4 stalls.

In the cartoon the presence of the second person is rather obvious, but if you are in a busy airport bathroom with 4 urinals and somebody is at urinal 2, is it really an invasion if you use urinal 3 instead of urinal 4? I mean worth the homophobic comments? Is that extra 2 feet of space so important?

It's silly to worry so, so I just pee in the stalls so I don't get my ass kicked by some weirdo with issues.

[quote]In the cartoon the presence of the second person is rather obvious

I mean because of all the other urinal choices. In a smaller setting, I guess I don't see the big deal about privacy. In many places like locker rooms the urinal is more of a trough.

by Anonymousreply 901/04/2013

lol Shaq could not even use a standard urinal --it would be even height with his knees..let alone I doubt he would bother to pee in public..diva bitch.

by Anonymousreply 1001/04/2013

Are there any actual GAY men on DL anymore?

The point is that his original post spurred homophobic remarks and he did not clarify what he meant, or confront the bigots in any way. If he did not MEAN it as an anti-gay thing it would have been very easy for him to say so. But he didn't. His remark carried a presumption that his straight male fans either understood or misinterpreted, and if it was a misinterpretation he had plenty of opportunity to interrupt the anti-gay remarks and clarify it.

Do I really need to explain that?? Honestly, this is more like a breeder board every day.

by Anonymousreply 1101/04/2013

Good point R10. Even at 6'3" I find myself too tall for some urinals.

by Anonymousreply 1201/04/2013

Big fucking deal people are homophobic. People are racist too - should I go on his facebook page and say I would never pee next to a nigger anyways? Shaq does not have to stand up for me (yeah I am gay) I can take care of myself. Face it, if a guy is in a urinal with 20 empties and chooses the one RIGHT next to you - he is cruising you. Fuck him in an empty stall and move on, call him a fat creepy fuck and move on or sneeze and piss all over his shoes for fun..Who the hell cares.

by Anonymousreply 1301/04/2013

Gee r10/ r13, you must bend over backward every day to make sure straight people like you. Sad that people like you are the problem when you think you're the solution.

by Anonymousreply 1401/04/2013

So instead of standing up for himself, R13 should go around demanding others need to stand up for him instead?

by Anonymousreply 1501/04/2013

R13 and R15 should lock themselves in their garages with the motor running. Complete wastes of protoplasm.

by Anonymousreply 1601/04/2013

This is why I like bathrooms that have individual stalls, or at least dividers between the urinals. Not everyone is comfortable having someone right next to them.

by Anonymousreply 1701/04/2013

Yea I agree, If a guy stands right next to you in an empty bathroom he's cruising. Even a dumb basketball player like Shaq knows that.

by Anonymousreply 1801/04/2013

[quote]Even major airports might only have 4 urinals side by side and 4 stalls.

Huh? I know train stations that have twice that many of both. Rest stops on busy highways also have large bathrooms with a half dozen or more lining multiple walls. Banquet halls, casinos, megaplexes, large bars/clubs...I've seen all with a dozen or more urinals lining at least one wall.

What's your definition of a "major airport"?

by Anonymousreply 1901/04/2013

R8 is Larry Craig.

by Anonymousreply 2001/04/2013

the cartoon is anti-gay because the guy in the blue shirt is obviously limp-wristed. the cartoonist clearly has an axe to grind.

as for the point about someone using the urinal right next to you when there are others available, i've never seen anyone do this. I don't think that's really the point, personally.

by Anonymousreply 2101/04/2013

How do people get that the guy in the cartoon is walking in a 'swishy' manner?
