Gallup Poll: Majority has favorable view of the NRA
[It's a Gallup poll (one of the most inaccurate pollsters in the Presidential election) so caution should be exercised in interpreting the results. Still, it's probably not far off the mark. 2012 PT]
December 28, 2012
While the National Rifle Association faces a growing interest in gun control following the Newtown, Conn. elementary school shootings, the gun lobby is still viewed favorably by 54 percent of Americans, according to a new Gallup poll.
The survey was taken Dec. 19 to 22; NRA President Wayne LaPierre’s call for armed guards in schools came while the poll was in the field. Support for the NRA follows partisan lines; 83 percent of Republicans view the organization favorably while only 36 percent of Democrats do. Independents tilt slightly in favor, at 54 percent.
At the same time, only 6 percent of respondents said that the NRA “always” represents their views. Twenty-nine percent said it represented their views most of the time, 32 percent said sometimes and 29 percent said never. A quarter of gun owners have an unfavorable view of the NRA, and half say the group represents their views only sometimes, or never.
The NRA has been viewed favorably overall in Gallup polling since 1995, when the group hit a low of 42 percent. That was the year former president George H.W. Bush resigned from the group over LaPierre’s description of federal agents as “jack-booted thugs.”

Count me in that majority as well. I have three guns and will NEVER give them up.

I call bullshit on this poll. Who knows where they polled (TX?) and how they phrased the questions. Gallup was clearly biased during the presidential race so why should they have any credibility now.

R1, no one is asking you to give them up. But if you don't realize that the NRA is a powerful lobbying group that is full of knuckle dragging, brainwashed idiots, then the joke's on you.

I have a handgun that my brother gave me for protection after someone tried to break into my home. I won't give it up but I wouldn't dream of joining the NRA. I'm sure there are many others like me.

54% isn't much of a majority. I would want to see who they polled and the exact questions they asked before I believe this.

I like to hunt, but realized the NRA is too politically powerful.

Gallup polls have lost all credibility.

Americans always try and deny that the USA is a nation of ignorant, gun waving, anti-gay religious fanatics, but they keep getting proven wrong.

People are idiots. the NRA is a lobbying group for gun manufacturers. $$$$$$$$$$$$
They don't care if you ever use the guns you're buying- they just want you to buy more guns, and more guns and more guns. $$$$$$$$$$$$
They don't give a shit about gun ownership as a Constitutional right or any other rights Americans might think they have - it's all about greed. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The results of this poll are as surprising as those of a poll on milk-drinking sponsored by the dairy farmers.

And Obama didn't have a chance of winning the election according to Gallup.

Just the very fact that you think anyone is coming to get your guns proves you're a raving fucking idiot, R1.

Gallup also insisted we get used to President Romney.

How is that even remotely possible?
The NRA is a completely insane, out-of-touch, irrational, and deeply corrupt organization. How does it have a higher favorability rating than, say, the Republican Congress?

I guess there is still a big future for Country Music in the USA

R1 showing everyone that 54 also speaks to their IQs.
Idiot, no one is looking to take your guns. Quit being such an idiot. Sleep with your loaded gun pointing out you for all we care.

Gallup are paid republican propagandists. I don't they even do polls anymore, they make their numbers up.

My thought exactly.
I see the word "Gallup" and immediately take whatever results they claim to be true and assume the opposite is true.
