Vivien Leigh has died

CNN is reporting her death. She was 53. Tuberculosis is suspected to be the cause of death. Rest in peace, Vivien.

by Anonymousreply 152November 6, 2020 12:46 AM

Yep, she has died, in July 1967, shortly before my 3rd birthday.

by Anonymousreply 1December 25, 2012 8:15 AM

Thanks for the news flash.

by Anonymousreply 2December 25, 2012 9:39 AM

Is she dead, or dead dead?

by Anonymousreply 3December 25, 2012 9:44 AM

Well fiddle-dee-dee!

by Anonymousreply 4December 25, 2012 9:51 AM

"I'll think about that tomorrow".

by Anonymousreply 5December 25, 2012 10:13 AM

And hopefully the OP will soon follow

by Anonymousreply 6December 25, 2012 10:42 AM

In other news, The War of 1812 is finally over.

by Anonymousreply 7December 25, 2012 3:11 PM

Frankly, OP?

by Anonymousreply 8December 25, 2012 3:13 PM

I can't think about this today; I'll go crazy. I'll think about this tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 9December 25, 2012 3:17 PM

One of my favorite scenes. 'Ship of Fools', just a couple years ago....

by Anonymousreply 12January 25, 2013 3:53 AM

In other news Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

by Anonymousreply 13January 25, 2013 3:58 AM

FUCK! Now there will NEVER be a sequel to Gone With The Wind. First Clark, now Viv. What the hell is the world coming to? At least we still have Judy Garland!

by Anonymousreply 14January 25, 2013 4:10 AM

Smoking and TB are never a good combination.

by Anonymousreply 15January 25, 2013 4:12 AM

In the 70's Bertolucci wanted to do a sequel to Gone With The Wind with Geraldine Page and Walter Matthau, never came to pass, but would have been interesting.

by Anonymousreply 16January 25, 2013 4:19 AM

President and Mrs. Johnson have sent condolences to the family.

by Anonymousreply 17January 25, 2013 4:19 AM

at least spell her name right

by Anonymousreply 18January 25, 2013 4:33 AM

Well, that's just swell. I was going to dodge the draft, but FUCK IT, I may as well go to Vietnam now. This news is so depressing. I went to see Bonnie & Clyde at the drive-in last night, but I was too depressed to enjoy it. Even listening to "Sgt. Pepper" isn't cheering me up. The Beatles have always cheered me up in the past. I hope Star Trek is not a rerun this week. I'll just die. Star Trek is the only thing in my life that I can depend on to make me feel groovy when I'm feeling bummed. Well, I like Mission: Impossible and Get Smart, too. Viv, you were one of a kind. I loved you dearly. I just don't know how I will go on. Oh well, I still have the memories. Maybe they'll play Gone With The Wind on TV one of these days.

by Anonymousreply 19January 25, 2013 5:12 AM

Just heard the news over the Lear Jet Stereo 8 while warming up the Corvair. The Philco's on the fritz, I just got got back from Rexall's-they have the best tube tester in town. Never seen Gone With the Wind, maybe one day it'll be on TV..

by Anonymousreply 31January 25, 2013 3:50 PM

I'm sure this will be thoroughly disturbing news when I'm born several years from now.

by Anonymousreply 32January 25, 2013 3:56 PM

Oh, dear. Not Viv. Do The Monkees know yet? Davy will be devastated.

by Anonymousreply 33January 25, 2013 4:01 PM

Viv is in heaven now discussing her bi-polar disorder with Judy Garland and Dusty Springfield.

by Anonymousreply 41January 25, 2013 7:42 PM

How's Larry holding up ?

by Anonymousreply 42January 25, 2013 8:13 PM

He obviously meant John Travolta asshole.

by Anonymousreply 43January 25, 2013 9:10 PM

I never miss a Vivien Leigh musical.

Except when they name them TOVARICH, fer chrissakes.

by Anonymousreply 44January 25, 2013 9:20 PM

I had heard she wasn't well. Poor thing. She's in a better place now.

by Anonymousreply 45January 25, 2013 9:31 PM

R37 You are joking, right?

Tell me you understand there's a difference between Vivien Leigh (actress, Gone With the Wind) and Vivian Vance (actress/comedienne, I Love Lucy)?

Sure. Vivien wore drapes. Vivian hung them.

by Anonymousreply 50January 25, 2013 9:38 PM

Although I'm sure it's for the best that she and Olivier never had a child (considering that her struggle with bipolar-ness was manifesting itself by the end of the marriage), still, the world missed out on somebody who probably would have been an incredible actor!

OP, I think you'd better check the control panel on your Tardis.

by Anonymousreply 59April 17, 2013 1:55 AM

Nothing yet on CNN. For some reason they are obsessed with some runner falling at the Boston Marathon. I'll monitor the situation and report back when when I get more information.

by Anonymousreply 60April 17, 2013 2:02 AM

No, she's only outside looking in.

by Anonymousreply 61April 17, 2013 3:03 PM

I actually saw the Boston tryout of "Tovarch" a few years ago when I was in high school. It was a school trip, Saturday afternoon. She was great, but not much of a singer (fine dancer though).

by Anonymousreply 69January 28, 2015 1:08 AM

she would be 102 today.

by Anonymousreply 70January 28, 2015 1:30 AM

Well she had a daughter with someone else and Larry had children with other women.

If they had had children with one another, and I'm not sure why they didn't, their children wouldn't have been more fucked up than most of us.

At least they probably would have been gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 79January 28, 2015 9:26 PM

She's fine, she sends her love.

by Anonymousreply 80January 29, 2015 12:16 AM

But I wanted to direct her in my new off broadway play! *cries*

by Anonymousreply 81February 19, 2015 3:59 AM

we would have been amazing in a film together.

by Anonymousreply 82May 26, 2015 9:24 AM

Good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 83May 26, 2015 9:30 AM

She was so good in that movie where the house burned down and she had to move to New Orleans where Warren Beatty raped her. I loved her as the ballet dancer on the bridge too. RIP. Great actress and beauty. Had she been ill long?

by Anonymousreply 84May 26, 2015 9:56 AM

She was 'married' to the renowned homosexual Laurence Olivier!

by Anonymousreply 85May 26, 2015 10:20 AM

That clip at r72, with all that smoking, is a little bit creepy - since they all died of diseases related to smoking (emphysema, TB, lung cancer). (Well, all except Goldwyn, who doesn't smoke in the segment).

by Anonymousreply 86May 26, 2015 10:55 AM

[quote]CNN is reporting her death. She was 53. Tuberculosis is suspected to be the cause of death. Rest in peace, Vivien.

That's very sad. But as long as we still have Kate for the next 36 years, everything's fine!

by Anonymousreply 90May 26, 2015 8:00 PM

People did age badly back then huh? She was a matron at 53. That said, one of the most beautiful women ever. No woman today comes near.

by Anonymousreply 91May 26, 2015 8:08 PM

R84 was trying to be clever, conflating three of her big movies (GWTW, STREETCAR, THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE).

But it was Atlanta that burned down in GWTW, not her house. Her house, Tara, is still standing after the Yankee onslaught. Twelve Oaks is trashed, but not Tara.

by Anonymousreply 92May 26, 2015 11:11 PM

R76, Leigh did become pregnant when she was married to Olivier but she had a miscarriage.

by Anonymousreply 93May 26, 2015 11:24 PM

It appears that some of you arrived a wee bit too late for the funeral.

by Anonymousreply 94May 26, 2015 11:33 PM

Actually I had a friend my coworkers told me had died....and they were lying. He was very much alive, which I found out when he really did die sometime later.

I always wondered why people would do such a thing.

by Anonymousreply 95May 26, 2015 11:39 PM

Does this mean Vivien won't get a chance to redeem herself after getting fired from "Elephant Walk"?

I heard that young starlet bitch Elizabeth Taylor manipulated the producers into firing Viv, so she could take over Vivien's role.

(But Viv got the last laugh - she paid an Indian shaman to put an Elephant Walk curse on Liz - let's see how slender Liz looks walking away, swinging her "trunk" in a few years.)

by Anonymousreply 96May 27, 2015 12:48 AM

On a related note, in 1965 Elizabeth Taylor, struggling in vain to lose enough weight to be believable in "The Sandpiper" (in the end they just threw a big caftan over her), had a beautiful young actress named Sharon Tate fired and removed from the set, because Liz couldn't stand the competition.

The only hit that comes out of a Helen Lawson show is Helen Lawson, and that's ME, baby, remember?

by Anonymousreply 97May 27, 2015 12:57 AM

R34 Isn't "bi-polar" just another term for "female hysteria?"

by Anonymousreply 98May 27, 2015 1:02 AM

It's a little like blockade running!

by Anonymousreply 99May 27, 2015 1:46 AM

Vivien had to be let go from Elephant Walk after shooting had already begun and in a few long shots of her character and Peter Finch walking around his plantation, it's very obvious (and later confirmed) that it's short and by then thick waisted Vivien onscreen, not Taylor.

by Anonymousreply 100May 27, 2015 6:09 AM

As beautiful as Elizabeth Taylor briefly was, she was never Vivien Leigh. Leigh was a face that launched a thousand ships beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 101May 27, 2015 6:23 AM

r34 is the bipolar Bipolar Troll.

by Anonymousreply 102May 27, 2015 6:43 AM

Can someone check on Generalissimo Francisco Franco?

by Anonymousreply 103May 27, 2015 6:52 AM

Vivien is a lot of fun in the somewhat bizarre 1945 British movie, CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA, based on the play by G.B. Shaw. This stage-bound Technicolor extravaganza was the costliest film made up to its time in the UK. Made during the final year of WWII, it was a box office flop.

It's almost surreal to think of these hundreds of people in ancient Roman and Egyptian garb gathering on massive sets to deliver Shavian dialogue even as their nation is battling Hitler.

by Anonymousreply 104May 27, 2015 7:05 AM

CNN is reporting this? I though Pathé News had the scoop.

by Anonymousreply 105May 28, 2015 12:10 PM

R104, when Churchill's staff recommended they close the museums and other cultural venues to conserve money during the war, he said 'No, that's what we're fighting for.", or something to that effect.

by Anonymousreply 106May 28, 2015 12:13 PM

[quote]Leigh was a face that launched a thousand ships beautiful.

This is what Fellini commented about Capucine.

Helen Gurley Brown stated that Capucine had a faced touched by the Gods.

Taylor and Leigh were lovely but Capucine was extraordinarily so IMO.

by Anonymousreply 107May 28, 2015 3:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 114May 30, 2015 12:46 AM

Leigh should have gotten the big screen version of "Sweet Bird of Youth". As talented as Page was, she could never convince as a movie star on the big screen.

by Anonymousreply 115May 30, 2015 12:48 AM

I don't want to alarm anyone but President Abe Lincoln was assassinated. I'm checking CNN to see when they're going to run the story.

by Anonymousreply 116May 30, 2015 12:57 AM

I don't really get Capucine. I don't think she has anything on Vivien or Liz in her prime but that's my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 117May 30, 2015 12:58 AM

I went straight for her, in more ways than one!!
