Is Frida Kahlo the greatest female painter ever?

Regardless of her tragic and fantastic biography, she was an extraordinary painter whose work will survive the centuries.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art did a spectacular exhibition of her work a few years ago. She really was an incredible talent that transcended boundaries and opened doors.

Suck it, Frida.

They are so damn “intellectual” and rotten that I can’t stand them anymore….I would rather sit on the floor in the market of Toluca and sell tortillas, than have anything to do with those “artistic” bitches of Paris

[R4] I agree with Mary Cassatt, her reputation will only grow

W & W for R9

Cassatt is a great painter. Some years ago, the Met exhibited her pastels among those by Degas (they don't usually as Cassatt is exhibited in the American galleries) She more than held her own.

On the other hand, Berthe Morisot has been 'revived' as someone equal to Cassatt, but she's not half as good.

I actually really like Berthe Morisot's work. I don't know if she's "equal" to Cassat, probably not, but I'd never say she's only half as good.

I hate grading artists like this. Especially women artists who, let's face it, have a tough enough time already.

R18 beat me to it.

by Anonymousreply 2012/13/2012

r7 nailed it. Frida Kahlo was good, but did she ever do jewelry for Kay Jewelers?

I think not.

Tamara De Lempika, whores!

I adore Helen Frankenthaler's paintings.

Absolutely love her work.

This is a very interesting question, OP, and it made me re-examine my own personal tastes in art.

I thought about this for a while, and came up with a list of female painters I really admired, most of whom have already been mentioned here.

But the more I thought about them, the more I realized that in terms of an entire body of work, Frida Kahlo is probably my answer. But I don't think she would be my answer had you asked me before I read this thread.

Can't stand that royalist bitch.
