Singer, Lisa Stansfield

Any fans?

She's launching a comeback next year with a new album and a new film.

Her last album was in 2004. She just disappeared until very recently.

I hate that word! It's a RETURN!

by Anonymousreply 112/07/2012

Damn, I just loved her song "BEEN AROUND THE WORLD" when it was released in 1989.

Lisa Stansfield - "Never Never Gonna Give You Up"

She said recently that she brought back the mole on her cheek again. She moved by to London after living in Ireland for a decade.

by Anonymousreply 312/07/2012

Saw her at Radio City...I don't remember much about it, she was kinda meh. I'd rather see Lulu's show at BB King's!

by Anonymousreply 412/07/2012

I adore her. I heard "Change" as a little boy in the early 90's, and I've been a fan ever since.

by Anonymousreply 512/07/2012

Hasn't she been mounting a "comeback" for years now with nothing to show for?

by Anonymousreply 612/07/2012

Love Lisa Stansfield, a very underrated talent who should have had more success. Hearing her takes me right back to middle school/high school in the early 90s. I'm glad she's singing again.

by Anonymousreply 712/07/2012

The video at R3 is hawt.

by Anonymousreply 812/07/2012

Spit curl or Not Interested.

by Anonymousreply 912/07/2012

Lisa turning it out at the Apollo.

by Anonymousreply 1012/07/2012

She and Jane Child had the same team of stylists. Apparently both were quite unremarkable looking prior to their record label makeovers.

by Anonymousreply 1112/07/2012

She had disappeared long before '04. Most likely her "comeback" will be launched straight into the cut-out bin.

Is this thread the antidote to all those eldergay threads? The average age of all the other DL threads tonight must be 65.

Here's a recent article on Lisa Stansfield and what she's been up to. She looks fabulous.

I think one of Lisa's big problems in terms of lasting success was that she was on Arista at the exact same time Whitney Houston was at her absolute peak. Most of Arista's and Clive Davis's energies went into the promotion and nurturing of Queen Whitney, and they didn't spend as much time on pushing Lisa and the other acts who were signed to the label at the time.

I think Lisa was the finest white soul singer to come out of Britain since Dusty Springfield, and I hope her new album is successful next year.

by Anonymousreply 1412/08/2012

Saw here on concert 20 years ago - Ll J remember is she did that thing I hate that singers do - they are sick of singing their biggest hit - so she held the microphone out for the audience to sing it.

by Anonymousreply 1512/08/2012

Her voice is rather ordinary, which is why she faded rapidly, but I do like Around The World, because her producers were a good neo-disco outfit heavily influenced Barry White. They were the true stars, not her.

by Anonymousreply 1612/08/2012

[quote]Her voice is rather ordinary

You must be frigging deaf.

by Anonymousreply 1712/08/2012

The world isn't deaf, they shrugged their shoulders and quickly forgot about her. Sorry fanboi, but she ain't all that.

by Anonymousreply 1812/08/2012

r18, she was huge in the 90s. She wasn't a flash in the pan.

by Anonymousreply 1912/08/2012

She was the epitome of a flash-in-the-pan. Her 2nd album didn't even make the Top 40 in the US, and the 3rd wasn't released in the US at all!

by Anonymousreply 2012/08/2012

I think she has a great voice. It's not the most powerful, but it has a rich tone to it.

by Anonymousreply 2112/08/2012

by Anonymousreply 2212/08/2012

Loved "Change" and "Make it Right", which was heard on season 5 of Beverly Hills, 90210

by Anonymousreply 2312/08/2012

I always crack up at the sheer ignorance of people on this board. It is so obvious that most of you are so fucking clueless about r&b music. The reason why Lisa IS a fantastic.singer is because her voice is souful and it is effortless. She doesnt do the Xtina runs or the Mariah dogwhistle. She just sings the song in a pure, soulful way. She was one of the best singers to come out of the late 80's.

I hope that she is very successful in her comeback since there is such a lack of people that can actually sing on the charts.

by Anonymousreply 2412/08/2012

R23, say what you want about R Kelly, but the remix he did of Make it right is a jam.

by Anonymousreply 2512/08/2012

Totally agree R25

by Anonymousreply 2612/08/2012

[quote]Her voice is rather ordinary, which is why she faded rapidly

Worse opinion ever.

by Anonymousreply 2712/08/2012

She has a great voice, and I loved several of her songs ("All Woman" is magnificent) but there was always something meh about a lot of her material. I think a lot of it was overproduced.

I would love to see her get some great material, have it very stripped down and minimal - maybe some electronica - and let her voice shine.

I'm sure what will actually come out is a record chock full of generic disco tunes hiding her beautiful voice.

by Anonymousreply 2812/08/2012

This bitch can SAAAAANG.

by Anonymousreply 2912/08/2012

I agree that she has a great voice and knows how to use it but I don't see who her audience will be except for nostalgic gay men assuming something materializes in terms of a comeback. There are only so many nostalgia tours, pride events, and PAs at gay clubs.

by Anonymousreply 3012/08/2012

[quote]Damn, I just loved her song "BEEN AROUND THE WORLD" when it was released in 1989.

The song is called "All Around The World." She's singing "Been all 'round the world, and I-I-I..."

by Anonymousreply 3112/08/2012

Love the Cole Porter song she did for the Red, Hot & Blue compilation ... "Down in the Depths".

by Anonymousreply 3212/08/2012

Sorry, that should have read, the "Red Hot + Blue" compilation album. It's great, buy it.

by Anonymousreply 3312/08/2012

R31 -It may be called "All Around The World," but she very clearly sings "been around the world," and NOT "been ALL around the world" in the song.

R32 - yes, that was one of her best if not the best.

by Anonymousreply 3412/08/2012

Whitney was a huge fan of Lisa's. She even had the songs the rest of the world didn't care to listen or buy on her iPod. I think she's the only white soul singer who sounds like she grew up in a black church. It doesn't sound forced or fake with her.

by Anonymousreply 3512/11/2012

That first album is so overproduced. I tried to listen to it again because of this thread and her vocals are great but the production is stuck in 1987. It's got every synth and drum sound of the moment and only a few songs escape intact.

by Anonymousreply 3612/11/2012

That song she did with Coldcut "People Hold On" has aged quite well, probably better than her first album.

by Anonymousreply 3712/11/2012

I don't think she's coming back.

by Anonymousreply 3812/11/2012

Love her.

by Anonymousreply 3912/11/2012

She wasn't a good performer, I remember they had a set with huge hat boxes and luggage and she popped out of them. Her voice wasn't spectacular either. Doesn't need or deserve a comeback.

by Anonymousreply 4012/11/2012

Clive Davis was idiotic for not releasing The Real Thing as a US single! There's no doubt that she would have landed her fourth number one R&B single had Arista released it. It has that Philly Soul/Barry White sound to it and you can't help but groove to it!

by Anonymousreply 4101/31/2015

"Affections" is still on my list of best CDs ever 20 years later.

by Anonymousreply 4201/31/2015

"You Can't Deny It" was my favorite track from her debut album along with "All Around The World" and "Wake Up Baby."
