The Lili Taylor apreciation thread

Per request on the "My girlfriend is pregnant" thread. (Check it out to see how we got to Lili Taylor.)

I haven't seen her in much, but do remember her from "Dogfight." A very moving film and performance.

Her IMDb bio shows steady, continuing work. She sees like someone happy to fly under the radar and just work.

Thank you OP!

Kisses and hugs!

I Shot Andy Warhol is one of her best movies, playing the radical lesbian who shot Andy. He barely survived and was never the same after.

by Anonymousreply 312/07/2012

Adored her as Miep Gies in ANNE FRANK: THE WHOLE STORY. So feisty without being mannered.

by Anonymousreply 412/07/2012

OMG I ADORE HER! I got into her after seeing I Shot Andy Warhol. Within the first few minutes she was on the screen she totally won me over. I was sitting there saying to myself, "I know people like this. People like this are crazy"

She does seem to be the sort that doenst need to make a huge splash phoning it in in some insipid blockbuster, but instead will work on small, independent films where she can really put in a great performance.

by Anonymousreply 512/07/2012

She was in Mystic Pizza?

by Anonymousreply 612/07/2012

Damn! I totally forgot "I Shot Andy Warhol." She was excellent in that and could not have been more different than the Dogfight character. I had Dogfight so stuck in my mind (the movie was painful to watch) that I didn't even remember she was Warhol's shooter. I guess that either speaks to my incipient elderdom or her acting ability.

You're welcome, R2.

by Anonymousreply 712/07/2012

Thank you, OP!

She is my favorite Contemporary Actress! She was hilarious in Say Anything, the first thing I think I saw her in.

Short Cuts, Household Saints, and her role on 6ft Under, in addition, of course, to everything else already mentioned.

by Anonymousreply 812/07/2012

Thank, R4, I was unaware of her work in that film. Will be a treat to see her play that character.

by Anonymousreply 912/07/2012

R6, she is the one who is not Julia Roberts or the girl from Shag, who was supposed to get married, but doesn't. She gets a boat named after her.

by Anonymousreply 1012/07/2012

Ugh. Every time I think I've finally heard the last of this smug, lucky, leaden "actress," someone else hires her out of pity or blackmail or whatever, or posts a thread, and there she is again. She always has that look on her face like she just threw up because of her thyroid medication.

by Anonymousreply 1112/07/2012

O wow, I forgot about Household Saints. Thank you OP for this thread.

by Anonymousreply 1212/07/2012

I was annoyed by her in "Six Feet Under," until I realized just how much she was nailing a certain type of passive-aggressive, fake-nice Seattle neo-hippie.

by Anonymousreply 1312/07/2012

r13, was there actually any likable character in Six Feet Under?

Claire I guess....

by Anonymousreply 1412/07/2012

Everyone hated Lisa, R13, but I always loved Lili Taylor's complete realization of that character. So unlikeable but so totally REAL and believable. Everyone knows someone just like her in real life, rigid and dogmatic while pretending to be liberal and free-spirited.

by Anonymousreply 1512/07/2012

Yeah that was the point of the character r13, Nate only married her out of guilt because he got her pregnant. But she was too insufferable to stay with for long. Like "A Place In The Sun" without the murder.

by Anonymousreply 1612/07/2012

[quote] rigid and dogmatic while pretending to be liberal and free-spirited.

I think she even displayed some homophobia at one point, hippie-dippy her of all people.

by Anonymousreply 1712/07/2012

She was the photographer in Altman's Pret a Porter.

by Anonymousreply 1812/07/2012

R10, it's still on YouTube if you want to see it. And Hannah Taylor-Gordon comes eerily close to resembling the real Anne.

by Anonymousreply 1912/07/2012

I appreciate her. My favorite Lili Taylor movie is Arizona Dream. But the range she shows by playing Patty in Girls Town is pretty amazing.

by Anonymousreply 2012/07/2012

She WAS hilarious in Say Anything, wasn't she? Also loved her in Pecker ('we don't have boys like that in New York') and Dogfight.

by Anonymousreply 2112/08/2012

I think her role in the disasterous remake of The Haunting really did some damage to her 'mainstream'career.

by Anonymousreply 2212/08/2012

I'm from the river.

by Anonymousreply 2312/08/2012

will she ever have a (small) comeback? her new movies do not seem to be very promising!

by Anonymousreply 2412/08/2012

I loved her in "The Addiction." Anybody who can hold their own in a film with Chris Walken is an actor of merit.

by Anonymousreply 2512/08/2012

Someone made a short film of her telling the true story of her father threatening to kill her brother while in a manic frenzy. You can hear her tell the story at the link.

by Anonymousreply 2612/08/2012

Back in the 90s I always used to mix Lily Taylor with Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney.

by Anonymousreply 2712/08/2012

Thanks R26.

by Anonymousreply 2812/08/2012

Another actress who should have had an Oscar a decade ago, but has so far been denied even a nom.

i still can't believe her ex, Michael Rappaport, came on the Stern show years ago and blasted her. Thankfully Stern and all of her fans who called in wouldn't stand for it and let him know that in no uncertain terms.

by Anonymousreply 2912/08/2012

Both she and Julia were the bright spots in "Mystic Pizza"

by Anonymousreply 3012/08/2012

She looks black.

by Anonymousreply 3112/08/2012

[quote] rigid and dogmatic while pretending to be liberal and free-spirited.

Aren't nearly all leftists rigid and dogmatic?

by Anonymousreply 3212/08/2012

Terrible in the Julie Harris role in The Haunting.

Now bringing home the bacon doing voiceovers in Tylenol ads.

But yes, I liked her in Say Anything, too.

by Anonymousreply 3312/08/2012

But it wasn't the Julie Harris role, the remake completely changed it. The remake is so ill-conceived it's impossible to judge whether the actors made the best of the terrible script, and who cares anyway. All Lili can really be blamed for is accepting the part to begin with. She sold out, but she isn't the first good actor to do so, people have bills to pay.

by Anonymousreply 3412/08/2012

She was really good as Lisa in Six Feet Under. I loved her interactions with Catherine O'Hara.

R36 = Helen Keller

by Anonymousreply 3712/08/2012

Did they ask Lilli, Annabeth, and Julia to gain weight for Mystic Pizza?

by Anonymousreply 3812/08/2012

I just worked with her this past summer, and she's pretty awesome. Hopefully our film will bring her out in the public's eye again, because she carries the whole damn thing. Projected release date 7/19/14.

by Anonymousreply 3912/08/2012

title R39?

by Anonymousreply 4012/08/2012

"was there actually any likable character in Six Feet Under?

Claire I guess...."

Claire was "likeable?" I thought she was as fucked up and annoying as the rest of them.

by Anonymousreply 4112/08/2012

Claire was the most likeable. I actually liked Brenda, except when she was in her self destructive phase in season 2, and even then, she was fun to watch.

by Anonymousreply 4212/08/2012

[quote]Did they ask Lilli, Annabeth, and Julia to gain weight for Mystic Pizza?

I don't think so. Julia was thick back then naturally, and so was Annabeth. I don't think Lili was any bigger than usual.

by Anonymousreply 4312/08/2012

I liked this scene from Mystic Pizza

by Anonymousreply 4412/08/2012

R43 - You're probably right about Julia. Annabeth and Lili looked heavier than in other roles of the time.

R46/Helen Keller is hitting the meth early tonight.

by Anonymousreply 4712/08/2012

"The Conjuring", [r40]

by Anonymousreply 4812/08/2012

She was also in Starting Out in the Evening, with Lauren Ambrose.

by Anonymousreply 5012/10/2012

I liked her in The Addiction where she plays a vampire. It was an indie vampire film that aided by her stellar performance.

by Anonymousreply 5112/10/2012

R50 - I kept expecting her to bring out her guitar and sing 65 songs about Hugh Crain.
