Holy shit, this is insane.

Who makes these things, chicks?

by Anonymousreply 1612/11/2012

I find it kind of cool how creative some of these fans are. On the Dutetube tumblr profile there are a lot of reblogged fan stuff from Sterek and some marvel universe characters.

I have never understood slash, and I will never understand what makes straight women (which is what most of the authors apparently are) write gay male fiction.

And about someone else's imaginary characters, no less.

by Anonymousreply 212/06/2012

I only just realized that guy is the kid from "Road to Perdition."

by Anonymousreply 312/06/2012

Some of it is just so insane. People are making paintings of them!

Do the girls even realize we can't have sex like this?

by Anonymousreply 512/07/2012

Lol at R5's link. I guess to them, gay sex = *hugs*!

I'm a bisexual female.. and I don't get slash at all. I mean.. I know what it's about. I know all about tumblr, fan fics etc. I just don't get the appeal with it. I enjoy watching gay characters on screen. But I never quite understood why there's a need to make shit up... especially when you know it will never come true. When you read the Merlin/Arthur fan stuff.. or even the Sterek stuff, they all comment on the characters getting together. And I just sit here SMH because I know it will never happen. Merlin has now ended, and what a shock.. Merlin and Arthur never got together. Now I'm not saying that these fans are totally out of it, because I could definitely see some homoeroticism there, but that's all there was. Nothing more. They were obviously never going to get together.

I think slash caught on because straight girls are hags.. they love all the gay stuff. I think that if they had the choice of watching gay characters on tv, real characters, or having to make them up because they don't exist, then they would have preferred to watch them on screen. I think much of the reason for slash is that there's simply not enough gay characters on tv. In some instances you can see chemistry between two male characters from the start, and I do wish more producers would be more bold and make characters gay. It's such a shame, a lost opportunity. I think many people get into the slash stuff simply because there's not enough gay characters on tv, so they need to make it up themselves.

I could never get into fan fics or drawings of slash couples. I just don't see the appeal with it. Maybe I'm too old. I'm not a teenager.. maybe it's my lack of imagination.. I have no idea. I prefer to ship people irl. And no.. I don't think it's harmful, because I never break the 4th wall. I ship people of various boybands. I just find it a bit more likely of happening if they are real people.. and yeah, I know the likelihood of it is tiny, but even if it never happens.. I still enjoy watching their interactions! It's cute.

Call me if the fans ever move on to Dargent: Derek and Mr. Argent (JR Bourne).

by Anonymousreply 812/07/2012

The fangirls like clearly delineated dominant/submissive roles so I don't think Dargent will take off.

I like it though!

[quote] I think many people get into the slash stuff simply because there's not enough gay characters on tv, so they need to make it up themselves.

There are often better developed male characters than females and often the male characters have more chemistry together. I get the appeal of it.

On a basic level I can appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes into creating some of the artwork. A lot of it clearly takes real talent. It does seem a bit obsessive to be that invested though.

Also in the case of Stiles/Derek, the fangirls are pretty convinced that it will eventually happen. With Jeff Davis it is remotely possible but I still doubt it.

Men like the fight for dominance and the winner dominating the loser for the reward while women on the other hand love the clear but romantic status quo of the alpha male to already know and own his place at the top and have that irresistible charisma that makes bottoms lay back and lift their legs up to the ceiling as soon the alpha male comes near them. The real challenge is about the bottom who manages to steal the alpha male's heart by making him his boyfriend.

In short: Men root for the alpha male to win his prize in a fight and women root for the bottom to get his alpha male.

Straight women have always written gay material, even gay porn. I worked for a gay porn publisher once, and many of our authors were actually housewives who made up a male name and wrote stuff that did really well. We thought it had to do, at the time (in the early 90s) with the fact that these middle-aged straight ladies grew up feeling fairly restricted in their options, and were sort of passed by in the sexual revolution, so took to idealizing gay men as enviously free in a sexual way. They never seemed to consider the legal and social struggles we were still waging, and god knows said nothing one way or another about HIV, but they otherwise considered themselves fag hags par excellence. For whatever reason, they were mostly from Canada, as well.

by Anonymousreply 1212/07/2012

I'm always amused by the same sex porn/erotica that straight people create.

Straight women create slash which is straight guys going gay for each other by acting like lesbians ("The power dynamics of our relationship are super serious business!" "Let's have a subplot involving DIY home renovations or a pet we've adopted!" "I just need you to hold me through the night!" "FEELINGS!")

Straight men create girl-on-girl porn which is straight women lezzing out by acting like gay men (specifically a couple of poppered-up bottoms waiting for their craigslist top to show up.)

by Anonymousreply 1312/07/2012

R13 that is all so DEAD ON. I never realized how straight people's fantasies of what gay sex is like result in wires getting crossed like that. Straight men imagine hyper-sexualized lesbians and straight women imagine two men on an emotionally bonding journey of soul-searching and trepidatious romance.

They both get it exactly backwards, because both are imagining versions of themselves with the wrong genitalia. Straight or gay, men are generally dirty sex pigs seeking the same and women are generally turned on by romance and emotional ties.

I'll admit, this one is hot.

For those of you who don't understand why rabid fans post stuff like this... a big part of the reason these people devote their creative energies to this stuff is to impress other fans, and to build a presence in the fandom. It's what nerds do instead of facebooking endless pictures of their kids.

Also, it's a way to get people to pay attention to your work, and believe me that's no easy task for the amateur artist.
