Actually they are wrong. HR people in particular are comforted by cliches: it tells them you are plugged into the "game" aspect of the employment process.

How do avoid using the word "responsible" if you are responsible for various functions, employees,, budget prep, et al?

Do you mean don't call yourself "responsible"? If so then be more precise as you should be with your resume.

Most of those words on that list are innocuous enough. Most of the applicants are just as innocuous and banal too, I imagine!
