Yes, they were usually domestics and railroad porters. But beside "race" films and GWTW, did any have roles that stand out in your memory?

Paul Robeson in THE EMPEROR JONES. It's not the most PC portrayal of a Black man, but you get to see the kind of power that Robeson could command.

Ethel Waters was great in many films from this period, including "Pinky."

There were also great performances by Paul Robeson in films like "Sanders of the River," "The Emperor Jones," and "King Solomon's Mines."

Or does that fall into your notion of a "race" movie? In other words, are you asking for roles in which African Americans played characters they were not allowed to play? Guess what the answer to that one is.

The first millionaire black performer in Hollywood was Sunshine Sammy, an original Our Gang child in the '20s. The black performers(Farina, then Stymie) were the most popular kids in the series until the Spanky era began.
