Madonna: has some type of overly self absorbed delusional disorder.
Dave Navarro: when he was a teen, he was deeply affected by his mother's murder at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, he never quite got the help he needed to deal with her death.
Navarro is now in a perpetual state of adolescence, which has nothing to do with being a rock musician.
His obsession with porn and fucking porn actresses over the past few years and tattooing nearly every part of his body, proves he has some sort of mental illness. At one point he quit the music business to direct porn.

I sometimes think bipolar is the current en vogue mental illness that gets over-diagnosed, like multiple personalities was in the 1970/80s. ADD is another suspect on that list. It's just seems too prevalent and is a nice catch all for any and all bad behavior.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||12/02/2012|
Let's not confuse the mentally ill with addicts. Some addicts may eventually become mentally ill because if their addiction, but some people like Lindsay need to just lay off the pills and booze. The same could probably be said of Anna Nicole and Amy Winehouse who were just wasted every minute of every day. Even if they had been crazy how would anyone have known through that haze of drugs.
As for Frank Sinatra he was just a womanizing, self important asshole who had too much money but not quite enough power. He wasn't crazy, just bitter.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||12/02/2012|
True, R54, but self-medication with drugs and alcohol is a symptom of most mental illnesses. So there's a lot of overflow, as well as co-morbidity.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||12/02/2012|
I think Lindsay is like Courtney Love or Britney: her problems are infinitely worse with the drugs and booze, but she's also genuinely mentally ill under all that. If she weren't, she'd be off the pills and booze by now.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||12/02/2012|
"why Laura Nyro and Susan Hayward???????"
Hayward was not what you'd call mentally stable; after one of her marriages ended (it was very violent in nature) she attempted suicide. I remember seeing a picture of her being carried on a gurney to the hospital after her suicide attempt. She had a lot of problems.
As for Nyro...well, her bizarre behavior has been commented on by a lot of people. In the thread about her one poster talked of Janis Ian's impressions of her; she recalled an incident where some Nyro was physically carried out of a recording studio, crying and screaming because nobody in the studio could get her song to sound the way she wanted it. Ian asked her what the song should be like and Nyro pointed to a purple chair and said she wanted it to sound "like THAT." Pretty nutty behavior, I'd say.

He definitely had mental problems. He tried to commit suicide after Ava Gardner left him. And he always had a need to push people around; he would use his mob connection to intimidate people. Sinatra was REALLY fucked up. Most of the rat pack were.

I thought CZJ was open, at least recently, about being bipolar. She came out with it publicly around the time Michael was finishing up chemo and their son was diagnosed as autistic(??). She had some kind of breakdown or something.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||12/02/2012|
Natasha Lyonne was pretty out of it for a while.
Betty Buckley has narcissistic personality disorder, and is definitely borderline as well.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||12/02/2012|
Yes, I think CZJ did one of the magazines, "CZJ's Brave Battle Back From Wacko" or whatever.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (of varying degrees) is what I've seen most often in Hollywood. It sometimes gets mistaken for Bi-Polar, Borderline and especially Antisocial Personality Disorder.
There are very few genuine cases of Antisocial Personality Disorder or its extreme psychopaths/sociopaths. The diagnosis gets tossed around quite a bit,, mostly for convenience.
More often than not, people just act like selfish assholes without any clinical diagnosis being required or appropriate.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||12/02/2012|
Many people think Princess Diana had borderline personality disorder. She certainly exhibited many of the symptoms, with all the drama she constantly created: not talking to people for years (including her mother) after a simple argument with them; the suicide attempts; the stalking of men she fancied or dated; the eating disorders; the desperate cries for attention (such as her infamous passive-aggressive relationship with the press)
Other celebrities who likely have or had BPD:

There is some truth to what r59 wrote even though I don't agree with all of it. I will say it's 1000x worse with children. There's a kid who won't listen, do his work or follow rules? Well he MUST be autistic or have a learning disability! It's completely out of control.

There's a big difference between kids who won't do work and autistic kids. You sound dumb, and are just reciting talking points.

Medication for psychosis can cause quite significant weight gain. I dont know about depression medication. CZJ is probably on one pill a day. Spears is probably on everything available. She wasn't just bipolar, she seemed delusional as well. One night she wore a pink wig and sat on the side of the road talking to the paps in a bad English accent, finally wandering off at 4am to buy cigarettes at a service station never dropping the English accent. She's also still under her dads guardianship, whereas Catherine Zeta is back to hoighty toighty self and is allowed out without supervision. They are two different types of crazy.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||12/02/2012|
Way too many psych meds cause weight gain, especially those for psychosis and bipolar. In my experience, Zyprexa, Seroquel and Abilify are some of the worst offenders. In addition to weight gain, they mess up your blood sugar and make you more vulnerable to type II diabetes. I have seen patients gain an average of 10-12 lbs a month on these meds.

Really, so many famous people have NPD that it you want to have an interesting discussion you almost need to take it off the table. If you don't, you just list every famous asshole you ever heard of.
IMHO the excptions are Britney Spears (severe bipolar or schizoaffective), Courtney Love and possibly Jack Nicholson (anti-social), Tim Burton (I think he has Aspergers). I also think Lindsay Lohan and Angelina Julie have BPD.

People with certain mental illnesses, like depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, have a tendency to abuse alcohol and drugs (see Charlie Sheen, Russell Brand, Britney Spears et al.)
Happy, well-adjusted people generally don't become drug addicts or alcoholics, but then they don't tend to become celebrities either.

Britney Spears was a child star when she was 8. At 11 she became a Mousketeer and from then on she was fresh meat for the notorious pedophiles who found a safe haven at Disney.
I've seen many of her behaviors exhibited by others who were sexually abused as children. Her parents wanted her to be a successful child star and it appears they were not always around to protect her. Many parents of child stars are either in denial about sexual abuse or they are too hungry for their children's success to let it get in the way.
There was an interesting thread on DL recently about boy band members and sexual abuse. One of the posters said that Justin Timberlake (who was a Mousketeer along with Britney) avoided the kiddy diddlers because his mother was always there and vigilant. She made sure it never happened to him.
Britney and others were not as fortunate.
Lindsay Lohan shares much of the same Disney history as Britney. Of course there are others.
When kids are used for sexual gratification by nasty old men like those at Disney, the resulting behavior should not be casually labeled and airily dismissed, "Oh, she's bipolar and schizoaffective." Fuck that shit. Her mind is screwed up because she was used by men from the time she was a young child and no one knows how to bring anyone back from that.
Marilyn Monroe was sexually abused in foster homes when she was a child. She's another one who was used by men throughout her life.

|by Anonymous||reply 100||06/19/2013|
Many problems are also caused by stars being used as money-making machines, no matter what's going on with them.
I've watched it recently with Justin Beiber. Of course he's got an ego the size of the sun; he's a kid who does not have the mental capacity to deal with his success. Driving him is a corporation who only care how much money he can make for them, and they've been pushing him past his limits for a while. He's been showing signs of cracking but they won't back down because their only concern is profits.
I saw the process first hand when a friend wrote a best-selling novel and afterward her publisher drove her relentlessly for a sequel. She foolishly signed a contract for another book, to be written on demand within their time frame as if she were a trained seal regurgitating words. To her enormous detriment, both physical and mental, she wrote the book. When they pressured her for a third novel, she suffered a breakdown. One of the worst people she was dealing with had the nerve to say she was "fragile." She wasn't before he and his friends got their hands on her.

To address a part of the OP question - "REALLY mentally ill"...
Major mental illnesses are things like Schizophrenia, Major Depressive Disorder, and Bi-Polar Disorder (type 1). All of these have genetic components, are actually genetically related to each other, and are much more common in creative types. There's no doubt a disproportionate number of people suffering with these illnesses are the entertainment industry.
Other conditions that tend to run in these same families are ADHD and Autism.
ADHD is the most common of all these and is absolutely rampant in entertainment, arts and other creative fields. Many with ADHD self-medicate to feel regulated and "normal" and not just with amphetamines but also with alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine and other things that increase dopamine to the brain. I wouldn't call ADHD a mental illness, but rather a personality type that no longer seems normal in our highly-structured society where people sit at desks 8 hours a day to go to school or work.
|by Anonymous||reply 102||06/19/2013|
[quote]It is high in professions like entertainment and politics - life paths that require unique and tenacious drive, extreme confidence and frankly the ability to use other people repeatedly to get ahead.
