Which stars are really mentally ill (or rumored to be)?

A thread by request, because I thought it has a lot of potential.

Well--who, besides Lindsay Lohan?

We're not talking about garden variety narcissists like Gwyneth, either.

by Anonymousreply 11006/19/2013

Catherine Zeta Jones, Linda Hamilton, Russel Brand all rumored to be bi-polar. I think Linda openly admitted it though. I remember reading that somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 112/02/2012

Leann Rimes.

by Anonymousreply 212/02/2012

Britney Spears, obviously. And Lisa Marie Carson (I think that's her name).

by Anonymousreply 1412/02/2012

Lisa Nicole Carson

by Anonymousreply 1512/02/2012

R14 why Laura Nyro and Susan Hayward???????

by Anonymousreply 1612/02/2012

John Lennon and Yoko Ono; both were supremely fucked up mentally, which may be one of the reasons they hooked up.

by Anonymousreply 1712/02/2012

R18, I was 16 when that Rolling Stone cover came out with a naked John and Yoko.

It wounded me.

by Anonymousreply 1812/02/2012

I don't think Frank Sinatra was mentally ill. He was just a womanizer.

by Anonymousreply 1912/02/2012

One of the girls from En Vogue, but I don't know which one. Dawn Robinson, maybe??

by Anonymousreply 2012/02/2012

Angus T. Jones

by Anonymousreply 2112/02/2012

Andy Cohen

by Anonymousreply 2412/02/2012

Phil Spector

The Daily Mail delights in showing pictures of her walking her dog, looking unkempt. She's fully "out" about having mental illness and they should leave her alone.

by Anonymousreply 2612/02/2012

Mariah Carey, I heard, is bi-polar

by Anonymousreply 2712/02/2012

Robert Blake, I saw him on CNN and boy is he a basket case...

by Anonymousreply 2812/02/2012

Andy Dick

by Anonymousreply 2912/02/2012

Please give explanations of what form of mental illness these celebrities suffer from them. Just a list of names isn't very interesting.

by Anonymousreply 3012/02/2012

Mel Gibson: Let's just start with deeply repressed homosexual.

by Anonymousreply 3112/02/2012

Dana Plato: Philosophical despair.

by Anonymousreply 3212/02/2012

The bi-polars:

Britney Spears

Robin Williams

Mariah Carey

Charlie Sheen

Mel Gibson

(in many if not all of these cases, cocaine has disastrously exacerbated the problem.)

by Anonymousreply 3312/02/2012

Sociopathic Suze

by Anonymousreply 3412/02/2012

Lark Voorhies is reportedly bipolar but is more than likely schizophrenic, based on the gibberish in her self-published books.

by Anonymousreply 3512/02/2012

Overwrought Oprah

by Anonymousreply 3612/02/2012

Anne Heche Patty Duke

by Anonymousreply 3712/02/2012

And let's not forget admitted bi-polar actor and author (I think), Maurice Benard.

by Anonymousreply 3812/02/2012

Madonna: has some type of overly self absorbed delusional disorder.

Dave Navarro: when he was a teen, he was deeply affected by his mother's murder at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, he never quite got the help he needed to deal with her death.

Navarro is now in a perpetual state of adolescence, which has nothing to do with being a rock musician.

His obsession with porn and fucking porn actresses over the past few years and tattooing nearly every part of his body, proves he has some sort of mental illness. At one point he quit the music business to direct porn.

by Anonymousreply 3912/02/2012

Ellen Greene

by Anonymousreply 4012/02/2012

What's wrong with Linda Hamilton?

by Anonymousreply 4112/02/2012

linda hamilton is bipolar, i saw her in an interview where she admitted to this. could be 60mins, several years ago, don't remember.

by Anonymousreply 4212/02/2012

How many of these are due to drug use. I believe that drug use leads to mental illness in many. You can't F with your brain chemicals much without some long-term effects

by Anonymousreply 4312/02/2012

John Lennon - He had some serious mommy issues.

by Anonymousreply 4412/02/2012

Marge Simpson

by Anonymousreply 4512/02/2012

R20, Frank Sinatra showed many signs of psychopathic behavior.

by Anonymousreply 4612/02/2012

R41, what disease does Ellen Greene have?

by Anonymousreply 4712/02/2012

I think we've got a very loose definition of "mentally ill" going on here.

by Anonymousreply 4812/02/2012

Not sure about the illness they have but for some reason Patty Duke and Kristi McNichol popped into my mind.

by Anonymousreply 4912/02/2012

Marilu Henner has some kind of OCD going where she claims she can smell milk products in people's body odors.

by Anonymousreply 5012/02/2012

Margot Kidder owns this thread

by Anonymousreply 5112/02/2012

I sometimes think bipolar is the current en vogue mental illness that gets over-diagnosed, like multiple personalities was in the 1970/80s. ADD is another suspect on that list. It's just seems too prevalent and is a nice catch all for any and all bad behavior.

by Anonymousreply 5212/02/2012

Let's not confuse the mentally ill with addicts. Some addicts may eventually become mentally ill because if their addiction, but some people like Lindsay need to just lay off the pills and booze. The same could probably be said of Anna Nicole and Amy Winehouse who were just wasted every minute of every day. Even if they had been crazy how would anyone have known through that haze of drugs.

As for Frank Sinatra he was just a womanizing, self important asshole who had too much money but not quite enough power. He wasn't crazy, just bitter.

by Anonymousreply 5312/02/2012

True, R54, but self-medication with drugs and alcohol is a symptom of most mental illnesses. So there's a lot of overflow, as well as co-morbidity.

by Anonymousreply 5412/02/2012

I think Lindsay is like Courtney Love or Britney: her problems are infinitely worse with the drugs and booze, but she's also genuinely mentally ill under all that. If she weren't, she'd be off the pills and booze by now.

by Anonymousreply 5512/02/2012

"why Laura Nyro and Susan Hayward???????"

Hayward was not what you'd call mentally stable; after one of her marriages ended (it was very violent in nature) she attempted suicide. I remember seeing a picture of her being carried on a gurney to the hospital after her suicide attempt. She had a lot of problems.

As for Nyro...well, her bizarre behavior has been commented on by a lot of people. In the thread about her one poster talked of Janis Ian's impressions of her; she recalled an incident where some Nyro was physically carried out of a recording studio, crying and screaming because nobody in the studio could get her song to sound the way she wanted it. Ian asked her what the song should be like and Nyro pointed to a purple chair and said she wanted it to sound "like THAT." Pretty nutty behavior, I'd say.

by Anonymousreply 5612/02/2012

"Please give explanations of what form of mental illness these celebrities suffer from them. Just a list of names isn't very interesting.

They have the usual mental illnesses: depression, various personality disorders, bi-polar disorder. Some of them may even be psychopaths or sociopaths.

by Anonymousreply 5712/02/2012

In the old days, mental illness was real.

Now a person gets drunk 24/7 and it's a mental illness. No that is a character flaw.

A person does drugs and is mentally ill, not that again is a character flaw.

A person can't behave themselves and that is a mental illness, no it's a character flaw.

Yes there are true mentally ill poeple. People with bi-polar and schizophrenics and those who hear voices (without being on a mind altering substance like drugs (which includes alchohol))

If you're doing drugs, or boozing it up, you're not mentally ill. You're just a weak person with no self control.

And now you have Uncle Obama to pay for all your treatment and to excuse your behavior and he approves us such thing.

No in my day, we took responsibility for our own lives.

by Anonymousreply 5812/02/2012

"As for Frank Sinatra he was just a womanizing, self important asshole who had too much money but not quite enough power. He wasn't crazy, just bitter.'

He definitely had mental problems. He tried to commit suicide after Ava Gardner left him. And he always had a need to push people around; he would use his mob connection to intimidate people. Sinatra was REALLY fucked up. Most of the rat pack were.

by Anonymousreply 5912/02/2012

I read a biography of Jerry Lewis, "King of Comedy", that exposes him for the creep that he is. He is REALLY mentally ill; not sure what his diagnosis would be, but he is definitely not a sane person.

by Anonymousreply 6012/02/2012

In R59's day, he broke the record for the world's smallest penis.

by Anonymousreply 6112/02/2012

Vincent D'Onofrio has said that both he and his oldest son have Aspberger's, not a mental illness, but I have also read he has bipolar disorder and is on a cocktail of Lamictal, Seroquel and Abilify. When he collapsed on the set and they called it "exhaustion," it was really a severe episode of mania.

by Anonymousreply 6212/02/2012

fucked up and mentally ill aren't quite the same things.

by Anonymousreply 6312/02/2012

Woody Allen is not mentally ill AFAIK. He is obviously an extreme narcissist and has spent many years in psychoanalysis, but that's cause he can afford it.

by Anonymousreply 6412/02/2012

Patty Duke owns this thread but thank GD she is ok now

by Anonymousreply 6512/02/2012

Sharon Stone

Sean Young

I thought CZJ was open, at least recently, about being bipolar. She came out with it publicly around the time Michael was finishing up chemo and their son was diagnosed as autistic(??). She had some kind of breakdown or something.

by Anonymousreply 6612/02/2012

Natasha Lyonne was pretty out of it for a while.

Betty Buckley has narcissistic personality disorder, and is definitely borderline as well.

by Anonymousreply 6712/02/2012

Yes, I think CZJ did one of the magazines, "CZJ's Brave Battle Back From Wacko" or whatever.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (of varying degrees) is what I've seen most often in Hollywood. It sometimes gets mistaken for Bi-Polar, Borderline and especially Antisocial Personality Disorder.

There are very few genuine cases of Antisocial Personality Disorder or its extreme psychopaths/sociopaths. The diagnosis gets tossed around quite a bit,, mostly for convenience.

More often than not, people just act like selfish assholes without any clinical diagnosis being required or appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 6812/02/2012

Many people think Princess Diana had borderline personality disorder. She certainly exhibited many of the symptoms, with all the drama she constantly created: not talking to people for years (including her mother) after a simple argument with them; the suicide attempts; the stalking of men she fancied or dated; the eating disorders; the desperate cries for attention (such as her infamous passive-aggressive relationship with the press)

Other celebrities who likely have or had BPD:

Angelina Jolie

Kurt Cobain

Amy Winehouse

Winona Ryder

Courtney Love

Charlie Sheen

by Anonymousreply 6912/02/2012

There is some truth to what r59 wrote even though I don't agree with all of it. I will say it's 1000x worse with children. There's a kid who won't listen, do his work or follow rules? Well he MUST be autistic or have a learning disability! It's completely out of control.

by Anonymousreply 7012/02/2012

Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both seemed mentally Ill to me.

by Anonymousreply 7112/02/2012

Joan Crawford was a textbook case of narcissistic personality disorder. Of course, Joan made it look so glamorous.

by Anonymousreply 7212/02/2012

Farrah Fawcett just seemed dumb as a box of hair. Ryan O'Neal, on the other hand, is a narcissistic wack-o-doodle.

by Anonymousreply 7312/02/2012

[quote]And now you have Uncle Obama to pay for all your treatment and to excuse your behavior and he approves us such thing.

Well good for Uncle Obama for getting up to speed with the rest of the civilized world and feeling that a country's citizens deserve health care.

by Anonymousreply 7412/02/2012

[quote]Narcissistic Personality Disorder (of varying degrees) is what I've seen most often in Hollywood. It sometimes gets mistaken for Bi-Polar, Borderline and especially Antisocial Personality Disorder.

I would say Jack Nicholson and Courtney Love would qualify as NPD, and possibly Anthony Perkins.

by Anonymousreply 7512/02/2012

Dont the medications for bipolar cause weight gain and spacyness? I see it in Britney Speers (side effects of the meds) but not Catherine Zeta Jones.

by Anonymousreply 7612/02/2012

"There's a kid who won't listen, do his work or follow rules? Well he MUST be autistic or have a learning disability!"

There's a big difference between kids who won't do work and autistic kids. You sound dumb, and are just reciting talking points.

by Anonymousreply 7712/02/2012

Medication for psychosis can cause quite significant weight gain. I dont know about depression medication. CZJ is probably on one pill a day. Spears is probably on everything available. She wasn't just bipolar, she seemed delusional as well. One night she wore a pink wig and sat on the side of the road talking to the paps in a bad English accent, finally wandering off at 4am to buy cigarettes at a service station never dropping the English accent. She's also still under her dads guardianship, whereas Catherine Zeta is back to hoighty toighty self and is allowed out without supervision. They are two different types of crazy.

by Anonymousreply 7812/02/2012

Way too many psych meds cause weight gain, especially those for psychosis and bipolar. In my experience, Zyprexa, Seroquel and Abilify are some of the worst offenders. In addition to weight gain, they mess up your blood sugar and make you more vulnerable to type II diabetes. I have seen patients gain an average of 10-12 lbs a month on these meds.

by Anonymousreply 7912/02/2012

"Narcissistic Personality Disorder (of varying degrees) is what I've seen most often in Hollywood. It sometimes gets mistaken for Bi-Polar, Borderline and especially Antisocial Personality Disorder."

Really, so many famous people have NPD that it you want to have an interesting discussion you almost need to take it off the table. If you don't, you just list every famous asshole you ever heard of.

IMHO the excptions are Britney Spears (severe bipolar or schizoaffective), Courtney Love and possibly Jack Nicholson (anti-social), Tim Burton (I think he has Aspergers). I also think Lindsay Lohan and Angelina Julie have BPD.

by Anonymousreply 8012/02/2012

I don't think Madonna is mentally ill. But I think she has no soul. Definite sociopath who used her lack of moral compass and guilt to become the most famous woman in the world - not hard to do when you make a career out of transgressing lines most people won't cross.

by Anonymousreply 8112/02/2012

Frances Farmer

by Anonymousreply 8201/02/2013

Joaquin Pheonix shows many symptoms of schizoaffective disorder.

by Anonymousreply 8304/25/2013

Amanda Bynes. Although it may be drug related.

by Anonymousreply 8404/25/2013

Funnily enough, not Eminem.

by Anonymousreply 8504/25/2013

People with certain mental illnesses, like depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, have a tendency to abuse alcohol and drugs (see Charlie Sheen, Russell Brand, Britney Spears et al.)

Happy, well-adjusted people generally don't become drug addicts or alcoholics, but then they don't tend to become celebrities either.

by Anonymousreply 8604/25/2013

[R55] You nailed it. We self medicate in hopes of numbing or controlling PTSD/depression/BPD and, even though we know it's not working we seldom quit trying.

by Anonymousreply 8704/25/2013

Miley Cyrus? MPD?

by Anonymousreply 8806/17/2013

Judy Garland owns this thread. Another bi-polar of note: Dusty Springfield.

"I don't think Frank Sinatra was mentally ill. He was just a womanizer."

Sinatra was a big time alcoholic. That makes its mark.

by Anonymousreply 8906/17/2013

What is that disorder where mother's eat their young? I think I may have it.

by Anonymousreply 9006/17/2013

Joan and Melissa Rivers.

by Anonymousreply 9106/18/2013

I think Charlie Sheen is bipolar, in addition to being a druggie, a creep, and an asshole.

He's starting to get weird again, maybe he's going into another WINNING manic episode.

by Anonymousreply 9206/18/2013

CZJ has been open about bipolar disorder.

by Anonymousreply 9306/19/2013

[quote]Patty Duke owns this thread but thank GD she is ok now

R66 seems to have some serious issues himself. Why is he thanking Geena Davis?

I think that by definition, anyone who is not terminally ill and seriously attempts suicide, whether successfully or not, has a mental illness.

by Anonymousreply 9406/19/2013

Angelina Jolie seems very off to me.

by Anonymousreply 9506/19/2013

Britney Spears was a child star when she was 8. At 11 she became a Mousketeer and from then on she was fresh meat for the notorious pedophiles who found a safe haven at Disney.

I've seen many of her behaviors exhibited by others who were sexually abused as children. Her parents wanted her to be a successful child star and it appears they were not always around to protect her. Many parents of child stars are either in denial about sexual abuse or they are too hungry for their children's success to let it get in the way.

There was an interesting thread on DL recently about boy band members and sexual abuse. One of the posters said that Justin Timberlake (who was a Mousketeer along with Britney) avoided the kiddy diddlers because his mother was always there and vigilant. She made sure it never happened to him.

Britney and others were not as fortunate.

Lindsay Lohan shares much of the same Disney history as Britney. Of course there are others.

When kids are used for sexual gratification by nasty old men like those at Disney, the resulting behavior should not be casually labeled and airily dismissed, "Oh, she's bipolar and schizoaffective." Fuck that shit. Her mind is screwed up because she was used by men from the time she was a young child and no one knows how to bring anyone back from that.

Marilyn Monroe was sexually abused in foster homes when she was a child. She's another one who was used by men throughout her life.

by Anonymousreply 9606/19/2013

I would not call bipolar a mental illness. Lots of amazing artists were bipolar.

by Anonymousreply 9706/19/2013

I can't say for 100% certainty but Jared Padalecki is rumored to suffer with Bipolar episodes. I know there is a wide range of symptoms though.

R98 It is still a mental illness. It is an actual ailment and is torture for many dealing with it's effects.

by Anonymousreply 9806/19/2013

Thank you R97. So much of it rings true.

by Anonymousreply 9906/19/2013

R93, the mania was part of acute withdrawal. It's scarier than substance abuse for both users and witnesses. It's why his concerts failed; post-acute withdrawal syndrome is boring.

He's an addict; nothing unique.

by Anonymousreply 10006/19/2013

Many problems are also caused by stars being used as money-making machines, no matter what's going on with them.

I've watched it recently with Justin Beiber. Of course he's got an ego the size of the sun; he's a kid who does not have the mental capacity to deal with his success. Driving him is a corporation who only care how much money he can make for them, and they've been pushing him past his limits for a while. He's been showing signs of cracking but they won't back down because their only concern is profits.

I saw the process first hand when a friend wrote a best-selling novel and afterward her publisher drove her relentlessly for a sequel. She foolishly signed a contract for another book, to be written on demand within their time frame as if she were a trained seal regurgitating words. To her enormous detriment, both physical and mental, she wrote the book. When they pressured her for a third novel, she suffered a breakdown. One of the worst people she was dealing with had the nerve to say she was "fragile." She wasn't before he and his friends got their hands on her.

by Anonymousreply 10106/19/2013

To address a part of the OP question - "REALLY mentally ill"...

Major mental illnesses are things like Schizophrenia, Major Depressive Disorder, and Bi-Polar Disorder (type 1). All of these have genetic components, are actually genetically related to each other, and are much more common in creative types. There's no doubt a disproportionate number of people suffering with these illnesses are the entertainment industry.

Other conditions that tend to run in these same families are ADHD and Autism.

ADHD is the most common of all these and is absolutely rampant in entertainment, arts and other creative fields. Many with ADHD self-medicate to feel regulated and "normal" and not just with amphetamines but also with alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine and other things that increase dopamine to the brain. I wouldn't call ADHD a mental illness, but rather a personality type that no longer seems normal in our highly-structured society where people sit at desks 8 hours a day to go to school or work.

by Anonymousreply 10206/19/2013

Is Narcissistic Personality Disorder a major mental illness?

It is high in professions like entertainment and politics - life paths that require unique and tenacious drive, extreme confidence and frankly the ability to use other people repeatedly to get ahead.

For example, we civilians often talk about the casting couch as if the actors are victims. Actually, most of them love this system because they have no qualms about performing favors in exchange for the chance at fame. This system favors their personality type and weeds out the normals who just can't stomach it.

What is most interesting to me is that the characteristics of NPD are almost more important in order for a person to make it big in entertainment than talent is. Basic acting skills can be taught and honed with coaches. Narcissists are natural actors anyway - this is how they manipulate people. Celebrity favors narcissistic personalities. It's practically essential.

by Anonymousreply 10306/19/2013

[quote]It is high in professions like entertainment and politics - life paths that require unique and tenacious drive, extreme confidence and frankly the ability to use other people repeatedly to get ahead.

That's also why it's so common among doctors and lawyers. One of the most narcissistic people I've ever known is a psychiatrist.

by Anonymousreply 10406/19/2013

Lillian Gish.

Jean Seberg

R108, surely BPD is only a considered to be a disease when a person is not creative or attractive enough.

by Anonymousreply 10806/19/2013

Poor Shelley Duvall appears to have schizophrenia. She's a semi-recluse and believes that aliens are living in her body.
