THE GROUP 1966. Based on the book by Mary McCarthy.

Candice Bergen as Lakey, the lesbian. Although she had the shortest screen time, this was her breakthrough. Stunning beauty. Joan Hackett was perfection. Shirley Knight, Jessica Walter, Joanna Pettit.

Always liked this film.

I wanted to see this movie again bad until I actually did. It's no forgotten gem, very superficial and plastic, very 1966.

There is the full movie on Youtube.

Joanna Petit was taken from us too soon.

Would Joan Hackett have had a bigger career if her representation had done something about that surname?

Really disliked the production values

Couldn't get through this one. So artificial and unconvincing

I haven't seen it in decades but I loved it when I saw it. It was the first time I saw a gay character in a movie, which was astonishing at the time.

It's on Netflix streaming. I remember liking the film when I first saw it a few years back. Then I was visiting lesbians over thanksgiving and it came up they had never seen it. We found it on Netflix and while it was good, it wasn't as campy or enjoyable as I had thought it was.

The powerful reveal of Candice and her Prussian girlfriend rocked this baby dyke's 12-year old reality. I could envision a future for the first time.

We had a great thread about this film when it played on TCM several months ago but damned if I can find it.

I found it as plodding and soapy this time around as I did when I saw it in high school in 1966. The Joanna Pettet and Shirley Knight story lines, which get far more atention than the other girls, are particularly ponderous.

I wish there'd been more of Joan Hackett, Kathleen Widdoes and Mary Robin-Redd.

It felt badly edited to me

Jessica Walter looks exactly the same now as she did almost 50 years ago.

Who is her surgeon?

Even the incredible Candice Bergen doesn't look the way she did...

Yes. Exactly.

R3- It's Joan Hackett who died, not Joanna Pettit.

I believe that by now, they are both dead.

Pettit is still living R17.

The book is very entertaining.

Funny, I just bought the dvd on tcm.com

I love this movie. And Larry Hagman's (Harald with an 'a') homophobic tirade at the end of the movie is still pretty disturbing today.

Thought every role was perfectly cast and let's not forget lovely Elizbeth Hartman as Priss. Sadly, her career was short but she left behind some really memorable performances including A Patch of Blue.

There was a screening in NYC a few years back and, I think, Walter and Knight were present. Missed it! damn!
