Wes Bentley comes to mind. Who else? Natasha Lyonne seems okay these days.
Fucked up actors who ended up doing well.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||11/25/2012|
RDJ owns this thread.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||11/24/2012|
Oh yeah, Wes Bentley is doing so well. A bit part in a franchise is just what every Juilliard grad dreams of!
Others that come to mind:
Robert Downey Jr
|by Anonymous||reply 2||11/24/2012|
that's the first name that popped into my head
|by Anonymous||reply 3||11/24/2012|
Drew Barrymore duh
|by Anonymous||reply 4||11/24/2012|
I mean well in terms of being clean, R2. Bentley might not have the same roles as Bale or RDJ, but he's working, right?
|by Anonymous||reply 5||11/24/2012|
R2 doesn't get the point of this thread. Or is just an asshole.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||11/24/2012|
Considering "doing well" could refer to career or sobriety, perhaps you should look in the mirror, r6.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||11/24/2012|
Christina Applegate? How is she fucked up?
|by Anonymous||reply 8||11/24/2012|
Or, R7, it could be both.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||11/24/2012|
Christina Applegate was a hardcore druggie/party girl in her late teens and early 20s. She was also with River Phoenix the night he died...
|by Anonymous||reply 10||11/24/2012|
This should be called the RDJ/Drew Barrymore Inspirational thread.
It's been so long since Drew was a mess that I think alot of people have forgotten.
Fergie was addited to crystal pre-Black Eyed Peas fame.
Charlie Sheen is alive and working, does that count?
|by Anonymous||reply 11||11/24/2012|
You're right, r9, but I've never heard of that happening.
You have to choose. I can't think of anyone who maintained or surpassed their using days.
Reminds me of this routine by the great Doug Stanhope. Not exactly on topic, but similar.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||11/24/2012|
Yeah, if massive weight gain and a liver that's a ticking cancer bomb is "doing well," then Natasha Lyonne is doing GREAT.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||11/24/2012|
[quote]Considering "doing well" could refer to career or sobriety, perhaps you should look in the mirror, [R6].
So then you agree with me? Because R2 seemed to consider career success as the sole definition of "doing well" in regards to Wes Bentley.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||11/24/2012|
Drew Barrymore owns this thread,
|by Anonymous||reply 15||11/24/2012|
Ronald Reagan, except for that Alzheimer's thing.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||11/24/2012|
And the whole being dead thing, r16.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||11/25/2012|
[quote]Oh yeah, Wes Bentley is doing so well. A bit part in a franchise is just what every Juilliard grad dreams of!
he dropped out after the first year.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||11/25/2012|
i NEVER believe when celebs they are completely sober. i mean come on, they can hide it and have ALL the money in the world to buy stuff and do it discreetly. you don't think drew or RDJ has done a few lines here and there? come on. not to say they are as bad as when they were at their worst but let's be real. i do believe they clean up some, but having worked in healthcare MOST/SOME people relapse and sometimes even manage to be casual users.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||11/25/2012|
How about Christian Slater? He had massive drug and anger management problems for YEARS, but now he's stable and while not a film star any longer, at least has a lead role on a major network show.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||11/25/2012|
what show r20?
|by Anonymous||reply 21||11/25/2012|
RDJ should be dead several times over. His career should be dead twice as many times.The fact that he is an A-list movie star, at age 47, whose movies gross hundreds of millions of dollars (AVENGERS alone made over 623 million)... well, he's in a class by himself.
I'm glad Wes Bentley is clean, and working, but he'll never have a career like RDJ.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||11/25/2012|
r22, RDJ's career at this point has as much to do with the lack of real movie stars under 35.
As to the rest, someone here mentioned that it wasn't being clean that caused his comeback. After he stopped the really crazy drugs, he was still using.
According to the poster, he is allegedly +. What allowed him to work again was an improved drug cocktail that made him insurable.

What movies of Downey's have done well that weren't franchise titles or where he played Sherlock Holmes? IN fact, when was the last time he made a movie that wasn't infested with CGI? That awful Tropic Thunder?
|by Anonymous||reply 24||11/25/2012|
He was in Good Night and Good luck, and was excellent in it. For once he didn't play the lovable substance-abusing fuck-up, in which role he has become very tedious.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||11/25/2012|
Due Date was huge. And he got an Oscar nomination for Tropic Thunder.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||11/25/2012|
R18 his character was killed off in the end, just like the book.
But in the book, Seneca Crane was seldom mentioned. They beefed up the character for the film plotline.

I know a for a fact that Drew drinks. I couldn't care less, she's been a normal drinker for a long time now, but I know AA members would throw a fit.
And I say this as someone who quit drinking years and years ago.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||11/25/2012|
How much does Downey make per picture?
|by Anonymous||reply 29||11/25/2012|
I doubt RDJ has ever been clean, except during his stints in rehab. He's learned to manage it and quit going on major binges. Those binges are what caused his drug addiction to become common knowledge. I've seen too many recent photos where he was obviously high to believe he quit using.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||11/25/2012|
I thought her main problem was drugs, r28?
Did she ever end up in rehab for drinking?
|by Anonymous||reply 31||11/25/2012|
Not sure, R29, but he reportedly got $50 million for The Avengers.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||11/25/2012|
I thinks drugs were her problem, R31, but to the media, she claims total sobriety.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||11/25/2012|
One of the first things Drew Barrymore would have been taught in any reputable rehab facility is that alcohol and drugs are the same thing.
I've been clean and sober for over 30 years, but I admit I'm not real sure about some of the dogma I've always heard. My father quit drinking on his own, but after about 25 years without alcohol he began drinking an occasional beer with friends. It doesn't seem to have affected him physically or emotionally, nor did those few and far between beers wreck his life. I've known a couple of AA people with long-term sobriety who began having a drink on occasion. They both quit going to meetings years before and quit saying they were sober. As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on some of that stuff. 30 years later when we're so very different from who we were when we were drinking, can we handle an occasional drink?
Barrymore doesn't seem to be screwing up her life like she did when she was younger, so I'm not judging her. Maybe she can handle it now. I only wish she wouldn't claim sobriety when she drinks.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||11/25/2012|
Downey is not and has never been clean. I've told you about his dealer many times.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||11/25/2012|
Christina Applegate was also in an abusive relationship awhile back,I think she said it was during her Married With Children days.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||11/25/2012|
I couldn't disagree more, R34. There are some addicts that can be addicted to any substance and who will jump addictions. No doubt. However, many addicts have one substance in particular that they're addicted to, but other substances don't have the same addictive effect.
I've never understood why AA members SO want this to NOT be true. They want an every addict to be addicted to everything. My brother was a HUGE pillhead. He went to rehab (thank god), where they tried to convince him he was also an alcoholic. He wasn't. He wasn't lying. Or living in denial. He just wasn't an alcoholic. He hardly ever drank. But he didn't drink for a year, just in case. No biggie. Now, ten years later, he drink like he always did before rehab. At BBQs and family functions. He hasn't touched a pill since rehab.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||11/25/2012|
R37, I think what you're talking about is his drug of choice. Some drugs I was in love with and others I didn't care if I ever did them again. The interaction between different drugs and/or alcohol with one leading to another is odd and unexplainable. I will say it has been a frequent problem, enough to cause rehabs to strongly advise against using one when a person is trying to stay off another. Your brother is a single successful case whereas rehabs see thousands of cases where it didn't work and had tragic results.
I don't believe the dogma about alcohol and drugs being the same thing came from AA. AA has consistently refused to take a stand on drugs, seeing it as one of those "outside issues" about which AA does not express an opinion. That's one of the 12 AA Traditions.
I heard that drugs and alcohol are the same thing in NA, never in AA. NA always said not to use alcohol because it was too easy to begin substituting it for one's drug of choice. I think it was part of NA's preamble because I remember it being read at the beginning of every meeting.
Individual AA members might advise others not to use drugs but that's their personal opinion, not AA policy. AA often gets quoted for things that are said by its members. If it's not in the AA literature, then it doesn't come from AA.

Andy Dick comes to mind, although, cant say he is doing well. Where is Pauly Shore?
|by Anonymous||reply 39||11/25/2012|
|by Anonymous||reply 40||11/25/2012|
R39 - Pauly Shore is doing the local casino circuit type stuff. He was performing at a small casino near where I live a month ago or so. I didn't realize he was there until the day before, and I was too late to get tickets. I don't know if I was more surprised that Pauly Shore was playing a casino on Bumfuck, or because his show sold out...
|by Anonymous||reply 41||11/25/2012|
I thought all actors were fucked up.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||11/25/2012|
Keifer does ok for a full blown addict/alcoholic
|by Anonymous||reply 43||11/25/2012|
How did RDJ become poz, according to rumor?
|by Anonymous||reply 44||11/25/2012|
Colin Farrell. Britney Spears.
