NBC News Reportedly Banned A Chelsea Clinton Marriage Equality Ad

WASHINGTON — NBC News blocked backers of a key marriage equality measure in Washington State from using a video featuring Chelsea Clinton urging voters to support a state-wide referendum on gay marriage, BuzzFeed has learned.

Clinton, a vocal proponent of marriage equality, cut the video for a group supporting the Washington state measure, as well as a second video for another group. But NBC, for which Clinton works as a "special correspondent" since last November, "scuttled" the campaign, sources familiar with the ads said.

In the weeks before the November elections — where voters in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington voted on measures relating to same-sex couples’ marriage rights — such prominent support would have been heavily sought. Clinton had supported efforts toward the legislative passage of marriage equality in New York, going so far as to attend and participate in a phone-banking effort in Manhattan before the legislature approved the bill in June 2011.

Chelsea Clinton is thought by many in the Clinton circle to be eyeing a political future, and her public support for marriage was an early step in that direction. Her role at NBC News — where she focused on good-news stories, and avoids politics — also appears to be a step in the direction of public life.

Three people who saw the videos confirmed their existence to BuzzFeed. They were fully prepared, with the script approved in advance, one source said. The video wasn’t intended for TV broadcast, a second source said, suggesting they were instead to be used as web-based videos. The source added that multiple efforts had been intended beneficiaries of the former First Daughter’s support.

No one would confirm on the record who the intended beneficiaries were, but the sources said that Washington’s effort to approve Referendum 74 and the social media-based marriage equality effort, TheFour.com, would have been among the groups to have benefited. In the video, a third source said that Clinton described her belief that everyone should have the freedom to marry, detailed the importance of the upcoming votes, and stated that success in the states voting on marriage would send a message to rest of the country.

In Washington, as well as the other three states, the efforts were successful nonetheless, with voters in Washington and Maryland approving marriage equality laws that had been put up to a referendum vote, voters in Maine approving a marriage equality initiative, and voters in Minnesota rejecting a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex couples from marrying.

Brian Ellner, one of the founders of TheFour.com, declared the effort that he had helped launch a success as well, telling BuzzFeed, "In the days leading up to the election, we reached over 4 million unique visitors and over 3.2 million potential voters in The Four states, including in top cities Baltimore, Seattle, and Minneapolis. On Election Day, we reached 2,237,203 people on Twitter alone."

A Clinton spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday, but The New York Post previously reported that Chelsea Clinton's NBC News contract was the reason why she was absent from the campaign trail in the 2012 election.

NBC did not respond immediately to an inquiry left Wednesday with its press office.

She should not be working as any form of reporter. She is a 1%er taking advantage of connections.

by Anonymousreply 111/23/2012

So what should she do, R1? Change her name, have plastic surgery, disavow her parents? Then she would be free to achieve?

by Anonymousreply 211/23/2012

She needs to drop the reporting gig once her contract is up.

by Anonymousreply 311/23/2012

She could actually achieve.

by Anonymousreply 411/23/2012

R2, Chelsea Clinton has zero credibility as a reporter. She is too out-of-touch with real people's problems to make a good elected representative. What the hell does someone who grew up in the White House know about anything other than unearned power and privilege?

She should choose a career that keeps her out of the public eye. "Birthright politicians" are anathema in a properly functioning democratic system.

by Anonymousreply 511/23/2012

It's a pretty standard policy in the news business that anyone working as a reporter (not a commentator) -- even someone doing cutesy feature stories -- is not allowed to appear in ads promoting a political cause (or in ads promoting a product, for that matter). If Chelsea wants to be active in politics, then she needs to pursue that and stop pretending to be a journalist.

by Anonymousreply 611/23/2012

Right--because rich people cannot possibly be effective politicians.

by Anonymousreply 711/23/2012

Interesting how all of you Chelsea bashers haven't said a word about Jenna Hager Bush's regular reporting for NBC's Today Show. She is on every few weeks with some puff piece and they just eat her up, giving her extra long segments and then interviewing her afterwards. How is Chelsea Clinton growing up in the White House any different than Jenna Bush growing up in the White House? And I'll wager that Chelsea Clinton is a hell of a lot smarter and more savvy than Jenna Bush.

by Anonymousreply 811/23/2012

NBC has a hard on for nepotism.

Chelsea

Bush girl

McCain girl

And worst of all: Luke Russert. Smug piece of shit.

How do you know?

by Anonymousreply 1011/23/2012

Hello?

by Anonymousreply 1111/23/2012

I forgot about her, R11

by Anonymousreply 1211/23/2012

Dear idiot at R8,

We had an entire thread about the bush when she got her appointment and no one supported it.

Yet idiot, this is a thread about Clinton, therefore we are discussing here and her equally ludicrous 'credentials'.

by Anonymousreply 1311/23/2012

R7, Chelsea is more like Alice Roosevelt or Caroline Kennedy than she is like Theodore Roosevelt, FDR or JFK. Most Americans don't wish to have "political royalty" running things.

Chelsea isn't even good in front of a camera. Brian Williams looks vaguely embarrassed when he has her on - like a parent who knows that no one else is really enjoying his child's violin recital.

by Anonymousreply 1411/23/2012

[quote]Yet idiot, this is a thread about Clinton, therefore we are discussing here and her equally ludicrous 'credentials'.

Jenna Bush credentials: B.A., English, UT Austin.

Chelsea Clinton "equally ludicrous" credentials: B.A., History, Stanford; M. Phil., International Relations, Oxford University; Masters in Public Health, Columbia University.

by Anonymousreply 1511/23/2012

All of that, R15, and yet she still just wants to be on TV... like all of the rest.

by Anonymousreply 1611/23/2012

[quote][R7], Chelsea is more like Alice Roosevelt or Caroline Kennedy than she is like Theodore Roosevelt, FDR or JFK. Most Americans don't wish to have "political royalty" running things.

Well of course she is NOW. But FDR, JFK, RFK and many other great politicians were "birthright politicians"

by Anonymousreply 1711/23/2012

I've never seen her segments. What kind of stuff does she report on?

by Anonymousreply 1811/23/2012

The difference being she's a woman. Sexist much?

by Anonymousreply 1911/23/2012

R17, they were not in the sense that none of their fathers were elected public figures.

No, R19, the difference is that the men were not "White House Children." The women all were. Can't you see past gender? Sexist much?

by Anonymousreply 2011/23/2012

Most Americans don't wish to have "political royalty" running things.

Yet the US has been run by that royalty for the past 40 years. Name me one year where at least one member of the Bushes, the Clintons, the Kennedys, the Rockerfellers, the Romneys, the Kerrys, hasn't held some elected/appointed position in our government be it at the state, federal, or local level. They have always had their proverbial fingers in the pie and often as the Bushes state that great wealth comes with great civic responsibility, no one ever questions their record in office. What have they done for the public at large during their rein in office. US incomes have been falling since the 70s yet all of these families have not gotten poorer with the rest of the population. In fact all of these families have maintained their wealth through recessions and have gotten even richer through government largess, kickbacks, and ownership in entities like the Carlyle Group (a private hedge fund that invests heavily in the military-industrial complex). No one questions their patriotism and service, but people should question their stewardship of this country and maybe realize that maybe they just aren't good leaders. People just keep blindly voting for the familiar names like they are some trusted brand. They aren't, and they aren't doing the public any favors either. For that reason alone I am hoping that we don't see either Hillary or Jeb for President come 2016.

by Anonymousreply 2111/23/2012

r13, please die. and make it soon, for all our sakes. you smirking moron.

by Anonymousreply 2211/23/2012

R17, the "birthright politician" among the Roosevelts during FDR's era was Theodore Roosevelt Jr.. FDR virtually HAD to become a Democrat to escape from the long shadow cast by the great TR. Until he succeeded, FDR was thought inconsequential by the Presidential wing of the Roosevelt clan. They called him "Feather Duster," combining his first two initials and his image as a political "lightweight."

If any Roosevelt of that period was going to run for president as a Republican, it would have to be TR's eldest son. In fact, during WW2, FDR spitefully issued a blanket ban on news coverage of TR Jr.'s heroic exploits as a general who led from the front. FDR didn't want HIS war to be a springboard to political success for his Republican cousin. He needn't have bothered because TR Jr. died of a heart attack one month after the D-Day invasion, in which he was the only general to land ashore with his troops.

JFK was not so much born into the Presidential class as made that way after the fact with the power of a bottomless supply of new money made by his father, an ersatz gangster who was the decided opposite of "political royalty."

by Anonymousreply 2311/23/2012

Actually, I'm all for Chelsea eventually going into politics. We need to keep the Clinton dynasty alive. If the Kennedys could do it, why not the Clintons? Hell, why not start grooming Sasha and Malia for it? The more strong Democratic families we have, the better. Name recognition has always been a part of politics. Last names are a sort of brand. You know what you're getting when you vote for a Kennedy or a Bush.

by Anonymousreply 2411/23/2012

[quote]She is too out-of-touch with real people's problems to make a good elected representative

Based on what? Get some professional help, you dopey sexist pig!

by Anonymousreply 2511/23/2012

Luke Russert got his job because his father dropped down dead. He has no business reporting.

Chelsea Clinton is highly educated. So what she's rich and comes from a powerful family? So have the majority of politicians. R23 is too stupid to live. He has a personal problem with her.

by Anonymousreply 2611/23/2012

[quote]No, [R19], the difference is that the men were not "White House Children." The women all were. Can't you see past gender? Sexist much?

Thanks for admitting you're a typical women-hating queen.

by Anonymousreply 2711/23/2012

[quote]She should not be working as any form of reporter. She is a 1%er taking advantage of connections.

But you have no problem with the talent-free Jenna Bush reporting on The Today Show right R1? And the vile self-loathing Mary Cheney using her name to make hundreds of thousands as a gay/lesbian liaison at AOL, right?

by Anonymousreply 2811/23/2012

I think Chelsea deserves some credit on this issue as the daughter of Daddy DOMA, she may well have felt compelled to do her part in penance for Bill's actions.

by Anonymousreply 2911/23/2012

R6 is correct. It was not appropriate for Chelsea to agree to be in any form of political advertising/advocacy, even if not intended for viewing on television, given her role as a reporter for NBC. Regardless of whether or not everyone knows you come from a political dynasty, reporters MUST stay unbiased in their career.

by Anonymousreply 3011/23/2012

The Clintons are CIA up to their eyeballs.

Of course their daughter would be as well.

We don't need more CIA "journalists" telling us what the truth is.

by Anonymousreply 3111/23/2012

We've had more than one Kerry?

by Anonymousreply 3211/23/2012

Funny how of the last 8 presidents, five had only daughters.

by Anonymousreply 3311/23/2012

R30, I don't recall Maria Shriver doing political ads while she was a reporter for NBC. When Arnold ran for governor, she took a leave of absence from NBC and then quit the network because it would have been a conflict of interest. She hasn't been an NBC reporter since 2003.
