I just read something on a site called Rome Gay Guide 2012 that sounded a little disappointing.
What is the gay scene like in Rome?
|by Anonymous||reply 68||10/01/2014|
Closeted. Catholic. Guilt-ridden. Expect nothing, you'll be satisfied. On the upside, you may meet a tourist!
|by Anonymous||reply 1||11/21/2012|
I was there in the '90s; I would imagine it has changed somewhat. But the Catholic Church has reigned holy havoc on the psyches of Italian gays.
They're very handsome and sexy, but they are closeted, guilt-ridden, uptight and troubled by the fact that they're gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||11/21/2012|
I can help answer your questions. Are you going/when?
I've been 4 times in the past 5 years, I love Italian men. There are plenty of gay men and bi. Coming Out near the Colosseum is where a lot of gays go before they go to other clubs. The whole street is blocked off and people hang outside of the bar. I've only gone in the summers and it was pretty packed, maybe with 400 people. In the summer they also have something called Gay Village with music and that attracts about 700 people or more each night. There are other bars, saunas/bathhouses/sex clubs, and my favorite thing is the gay beach about 40 minutes outside of Roma in the town of Ostia.
I know quite a few guys there from internet sites and having gone there. Use Grindr and other apps like that. Speaking Italian helps because not a lot of them speak English.
Let me know if you have more specific questions.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||11/21/2012|
Thanks R3 and others. I am going from the middle to the end of May. I am going to Venice and Florence right before Rome, but the majority of the trip will be in Rome. I will definitely be speaking Italian and somehow have access to Grindr.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||11/21/2012|
Yes, they have a nude section. Settimo Cielo and Mediterranea (I think gate "Cancello" 8 and 9) are also gay areas of the beach with different sections for muscle guys south of Mediterranea and then it goes to the bear section and Settimo Cielo/Capocotta(?) is where lesbians hang out and after that is the nude part. There are always horny men looking for action in "la pineta" the wooded area between the big dunes and the road.
That's my favorite part of Italy...thousands of Italian men in Speedos.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||11/21/2012|
The scene is mostly closeted, except for a street near the Coliseum where queens are more open and lively and spill out onto the street in warm weather. Be warned however the guys who frequent the non-closeted scene tend to be quite unattractive.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||11/21/2012|
I second what R3 said (having been to Rome many times in the last 10 years.) However, despite the lack of an organized gay scene, the city is very cruisy, even outside those areas mentioned above. Keep your eyes open and you'll be making eye contact with new friends all over the city. And, yes, knowing some Italian helps a lot.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||11/21/2012|
the muscle boys always want to be fucked
|by Anonymous||reply 9||11/21/2012|
HOT. CLOSETED. COPS.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||11/21/2012|
Google "italian carabinieri" (an Italian police force)
Mouth watering hot, sexy goodness
|by Anonymous||reply 11||11/21/2012|
I will say this: If you're into straight guys who like to get done, Italy is heaven on earth.
But if you're an American tourist looking for the Italian equivalent of Chelsea .... Italy is not your place.
Gay American tourists are overwhelmed by the high number of handsome men here... but then wonder where in the action is.
You have to know how to operate here.... you have to know the culture.... the when, where and how. And believe.... the rewards are high.
There certainly are gay bars and so forth but I think the scene is pretty awful.
But believe me.... if your tastes are like mine... Italy is the best.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||11/24/2012|
he unzipped his pants and out of his extra hairy bush was the biggest uncut cock
|by Anonymous||reply 13||11/24/2012|
Why not concentrate your time and effort on the architecture,art and history instead of trying to hook up with strangers. I mean you're going to be in Rome.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||11/24/2012|
|by Anonymous||reply 15||11/24/2012|
It was hot back in the day...

[quote]If you're into straight guys who like to get done, Italy is heaven on earth.
[quote]But believe me.... if your tastes are like mine... Italy is the best.
And what are those taste, fetishizing closet cases that tell you they are straight?
Lets get the inherent self-loathing past us, the concept is closeted, not "straight" and lets stop with that fantasy.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||11/24/2012|
I've always been amazed at the number of Italian cammers on "Cam 4" and other sites. For such an allegedly closeted culture, it's menfolk seem to love letting it all hang out.
Oh yeah and their profiles ALWAYS say straight, even wile they finger themselves in front of you for "donations".
|by Anonymous||reply 18||11/24/2012|
No, they're straight. If you want to call them "bi", fine.
But they are not "closeted gays".
There is a certain type of American gay man who seems to think that sex was invented in the US.
I've got news for you: it wasn't.
They think that their "gay culture" is the only one that exists. And that their definitions are the only ones that apply.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||11/24/2012|
I went and had lots of hot sex with a bunch of, well not exactly stable, Italian men. Want to be let in on a secret? Where you can get the hottest fuck down of you life with the most beautiful men? A place you'd never thing? TURKEY. Your ass will need its own vacation though.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||11/24/2012|
This is exactly what I'm talking about. and what an R17 will never understand: the Mediterranean... the Middle-East.... sexually, it is a different world.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||11/24/2012|
Please, cultures are different but people's sexualities are universal.
If they like having sexual relationships with men they are either homosexual or bisexual but by definition they are not heterosexual. They can call themselves straight but that completely goes against the meaning of the word.
It isn't that complicated of a concept. The fact that they live in a culture where it is incredibly taboo to be anything other than straight means of course men who have sex with men will still be more apt to label themselves as straight.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||11/24/2012|
Well I was in Turkey when I was in college on a six week exchange program. Now don't judge me it was college and well you know the rest. In that six weeks I slept with 7 Turks.
Everyone single one said they were straight. Great bodies and rough in bed. I kind of bowed out when the last one tried to forcibly take me to meet a group of his friends.
Fortunately alls well that ends well I guess. You need to be able to get used to some natural body odor and pass on the strong coffee and cigarettes.
The one thing I noticed about most of the men over there between the ages of 18 and 35 was there obsession with their bodies. They all really seemed to be into the weight training thing. Not that I was complaining. A bit of hijacking of the thread but if you're hoping for a sex vacation you might want to change your destination.
If you like a rough fuck.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||11/24/2012|
In these countries nearly every guy is fair game. The overwhelming majority will have sex with men. They are engaging in gay sex but cannot be defined as gay men. Otherwise .... by your American standards... the mediterranean and middle-east have the highest concentration of "gay men" in the world.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||11/24/2012|
R20 please tell more re: Turkey. I arrive in Istanbul next Saturday. Where can I get this hot fuck down you speak of?
|by Anonymous||reply 25||11/24/2012|
[quote]In these countries nearly every guy is fair game. The overwhelming majority will have sex with men.
Please, PLEASE tell me how I can find my way to this magical GAY-LAND, where 'every guy is fair game. The overwhelming majority will have sex with men.'
|by Anonymous||reply 26||11/24/2012|
R16's painting - from Bouguereau - never fails to crack me up. It's Bouguereau's only good painting, and it's a gay S&M orgy, with two caftaned (at least in their minds) queens - one is Virgil! - clucking at the hot uncut action.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||11/24/2012|
Thank your R26. I can't believe how these posters don't realize how ridiculous they sound.
You went to a homophobic country and you hooked up with a lot of dudes that are closeted but want an outlet for their same-sex attractions. Good for you, hope you had a great time.
Let's quit with these absurd gay porn fantasies that every guy secretly loves the cock, even the straight ones!
|by Anonymous||reply 28||11/24/2012|
Many very hot, but very deeply closeted men. It's not worth trying.
I agree with R14, better spend your time on that city's archeticture, history and glorious gay past.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||11/24/2012|
Isn't abit more complicated than that r 28.
Our concept of sexuality is very black and white and very Anglo/ Western European.
In cultures like The Middle East / South America Mediterranean as well as Easten European you do get married,you do have children,you are men. So sex is easy but gay relationships hard.In those cultures as long as you are the man anything is possible,as long as you get married and have children.
To me that is why being Gay must seem so weird to some of these cultures.
Add to that in Middle East you are not supposed to have sex with women until you are married and you have a plethora of horny men wanting to fuck you.But go out with you,marry you.WTF.
Anyway that's my own biased broad stroked opinion.
I think it is fuked but hey different cultures different strokes.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||11/24/2012|
Oh I just typed what they told me. I had zero doubt they were either bi or all out gay. It was there thing not mine. I don't have those idiot straight guy fantasies.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||11/24/2012|
A simple answer to OP's question - The Gay Scene in Rome is shit.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||11/24/2012|
You are on the right track. The Middle East / South America Mediterranean as well as some Easten European most men will have had homosexual sex at some point in their lives.
Of course for the clueless American-Gay-Nazis, it means these men are GAAAAAAY!
Often in these cultures men will have sex with men while young and move on to women, get married and that's that.
Or available women are scarce and well.... any warm hole will do.
And so on. The reasons are varied. It's complex.
But for those clueless American Gays, life is black and white and sexuality is written in stone.... there are no shades of gray.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||11/24/2012|
[quote]The Middle East / South America Mediterranean as well as some Easten European most men will have had homosexual sex at some point in their lives.
Still you're spewing nonsense.
Here's THE TRUTH. Most men would rather eat dog shit than suck another man's cock.
You live in a sort of mental gay fantasyland.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||11/24/2012|
R33 has a "straight" guy fetish
|by Anonymous||reply 35||11/24/2012|
R34 is an idiot and one who has not traveled much.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||11/24/2012|
R36, you say that "non-backwards" view that ALL men are straight is better?
|by Anonymous||reply 38||11/24/2012|
|by Anonymous||reply 39||11/24/2012|
Yes, R39, Italian men like bumbs.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||11/24/2012|
What about Portugal? Does Lisbon have a decent gay scene?
|by Anonymous||reply 41||11/24/2012|
I went up to Venice to have lunch with a woman I know from the states who lives there with her husband now. She was quite the fag hag in her day. She said there's really no visible gay scene in Venice either. It's the religion. Everyone's on the downlow.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||11/24/2012|
I fucked a turkey with an Italian sausage does that count?
|by Anonymous||reply 43||11/24/2012|
Look all I am saying is not all cultures are the same.
In some cultures the idea of getting married and providing for your family is so ingrained that the concept of not doing that must seem absurd to some people.
That may not be my way of life and I am happy being a gay man and love gay men.But then the idea of marrying a woman and providing for family is not something I have been reared on.
In some cultures gay means being treated like a woman and in societies where machismo is everything,being gay is not a acceptable possibility.
Unless of course you are gay :(
So I would say sex is easy.Romantic friendship a reality.Marriage and children a reality.
On the plus side. I think the definition of straight is so broad as to include many people who would say they are bisexual.
So sex yep.Especially if you are a bottom paradise on earth.If you want to marry a guy you are screwed and not in a good way.
That is just my observation.
But to me this explains the absolute ease in which you see Bel Ami models and South Americans have sex with each other but then get married.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||11/24/2012|
Oh, honey, it's divine!
|by Anonymous||reply 45||11/24/2012|
R44, in some cultures it's also ok to eat people. That doesn't mean we should support it.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||11/24/2012|
Your American friend understands little. Italians don't give a rats ass about their religion.
The hushed down-low scene in Venice is a matter of social norms. The "centro storico" of Venice is small... it has the characteristics of a small town: it's a place where everyone knows one another and gossip rules. And it's urban plan of piazzas encourage that. Venice is a city that young people leave.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||11/24/2012|
[quote]Italians don't give a rats ass about their religion.
Hmmm. I don't know about that.
[quote]Venice is a city that young people leave.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||11/24/2012|
The US is much more religious than Italy.
Church attendance Italy is higher than many other Euro countries but still much lower than the US.
Italians ignore the Church's rulings on private morality. Issues: issues like abortion are not even discussed here. It's legal and it's a non-issue.
The Chuch preaches against contraception but this country has one of the world's lowest birth rates. And so on.
As I said: Italian's don't give a rat's ass about what the Church has to say about morals.
There is much, much more religious zeal in the US.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||11/25/2012|
Vatican City, however.....
|by Anonymous||reply 50||11/25/2012|
"Venice is a city that young people leave"
Italy is a country that young people either leave or remain living with their parents, often without jobs, if they stay.
Italy has a gay scene, of course, but it is not the visible gay scene one finds in most countries. There are gay venues but they are rarer.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||11/25/2012|
Hey R23 - how did you meet the guys in Turkey? going there next month
|by Anonymous||reply 52||11/25/2012|
In countries like Italy where married men so often have mistresses, and even second families, it is not surprising that many men who like men - as well as women, although perhaps not nearly to that extent - would also get married.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||11/25/2012|
R51: "Italy is a country that young people either leave or remain living with their parents, often without jobs, if they stay."
Unemployment in Italy is on par with France at about 10,8. Spain and Greece are at about 25%.
Young people in Italy do migrate for jobs, just as Americans do.
While young Americans often move from one state to another...from one coast to another for jobs and education, Italians will also move to another "state" ...in our case, Germany, the Netherlands, Britain etc.
Italians often do live at home until a later age. Part of this cultural, part of it is economic.
Although home ownership is higher in Italy than the US (look up the statistics)... buying a home is expensive. Renting is expensive here too and the offer of available apartments is limited.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||11/25/2012|
r54, I meant not offense. Some of my best friends are Italian expatriots.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||11/25/2012|
I thought everyone knew that if you were young, around college age, and visited Turkey it would be nonstop sex. Especially if you were a blond American.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||11/26/2012|
For Venice, I stayed in Mestre. There is a hotel right near the train station and the bus only took about 10 minutes to Venice. There is also a sauna right around the corner which had the hottest guys of any sauna I went to in Italy.

|by Anonymous||reply 58||11/26/2012|
There are gay men in the Middle East too. Some of the clubs they have over there have a back room and they meet in there. One guy said that women are for marrying while men are for fun. So much secrecy and hypocrisy!!!

The bar with the darkroom was called Hangar.

(ANSA) - Rome, October 1 - Just 29% of Italian respondents favoured permitting same-sex couples to have children, said a survey released Wednesday by socio-economic research company Censis and the Ibse Foundation. Far more Italian respondents - 46% - believed it was all right for single adults to have children. The findings were reported in a study called To Become a Parent Today, presented in Rome Wednesday. Researchers found little overt influence of religion in the findings, as 43% of practicing Catholics believed being a single parent was okay, while 23% of them agreed that same-sex couples should be allowed to become parents.
