10 Most Influential Gay People in America Today

Let's make a list....

1. Rachel Maddow

2 through 10: ???

by Anonymousreply 5111/23/2012

Chad Griffin, HRC President, founder of AFER

by Anonymousreply 111/20/2012

Senator Tammy Baldwin.

by Anonymousreply 211/20/2012

David Geffen would probably be on the list. He has some influence in the UK too, pushing issues to do with piracy and so on.

Ryan Murphy, if only for the fact that he has 3 TV shows running, regardless of the quality of each of them, and these shows present a lot of gay characters and lgbt issues.

by Anonymousreply 311/20/2012

Lindsay Graham has been in Congress 17 years and is on a lot of powerful committees in the Senate. He'd probably be even more influential if his party was more comfortable with Lady Miss Things in power.

by Anonymousreply 411/20/2012

Andrew Sullivan perhaps?

by Anonymousreply 511/20/2012

Judith Butler.

by Anonymousreply 611/20/2012

Nate Silver

by Anonymousreply 711/20/2012

Anderson. You'll see.

by Anonymousreply 811/20/2012

Ellen DeGeneres? I'm not sure how influential she is, but she's one of the best known.

by Anonymousreply 911/20/2012

Lindsay Graham

by Anonymousreply 1011/20/2012

Chad Griffin? LMAO. He's not influential, he's easily influenced; which is why he's purging himself into oblivion.

Oh, and Rachel Maddow is the best.

by Anonymousreply 1111/20/2012

Um, excuse me?

by Anonymousreply 1211/20/2012

Barney Frank hasn't gone anywhere quite yet, so he should be high on the list, especially with the fiscal cliff and the lame duck session of Congress upon us.

Barry Diller should also be on it.

And, give the son of a bitch credit, Matt Drudge certainly fits the definition of influential.

by Anonymousreply 1311/20/2012

I second Tim Cook. Seeing as he runs the most valuable company in the world, he's one of the most influential Americans, period.

Now, what do we know about him? I suspect tiny meat.

by Anonymousreply 1411/20/2012

Excuse you? Barry Diller is married.

by Anonymousreply 1511/20/2012

David Geffen. his bio is on PBS right now..

by Anonymousreply 1611/20/2012

Lots of straight women worship Ellen. The same goes for Anderson.

by Anonymousreply 1711/20/2012

Hilary Clinton.

by Anonymousreply 1811/20/2012

Not enough of them to keep his talk show on the air r17, apparently only enough to keep a few pathetic fangurl threads at DL going.

by Anonymousreply 1911/20/2012

So far, I'd agree with:

*Rachel Maddow

*Nate Silver (this year at least)

*Tim Cook

*Barry Diller

*Ellen DeGeneres

I would add Anderson Cooper, for good or ill.

Tammy Baldwin will join the list after this year, but she has yet to be sworn in.

by Anonymousreply 2011/20/2012

Seriously speaking, Frank Ocean

by Anonymousreply 2111/20/2012

Tom Cruise, if you're into the cult that is Scientology.

by Anonymousreply 2211/20/2012

Billionaire Libertarian Peter Thiel, even though he's basically pure scum.

by Anonymousreply 2311/20/2012

by Anonymousreply 2411/20/2012

Peter and Harry Brant

by Anonymousreply 2511/20/2012

Rosie O'Donnell

by Anonymousreply 2611/20/2012

r20, Tammy Baldwin has been a Member of Congress since 1999, serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce, is co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, gave a primetime speech on healthcare during the 2004 Democratic Convention, and is a bipartisan networker. She has been out the whole time, including her earlier elections for the WI state legislature. She's the most visible lesbian in American government.

Why would she magically become more influential next January when she joins the Senate?

by Anonymousreply 2711/20/2012

Josh Kilmer Purcell

by Anonymousreply 2811/20/2012

Aaron Schock.

by Anonymousreply 2911/20/2012

Frank Ocean

by Anonymousreply 3011/20/2012

Dan Savage

Frank Ocean's PR machine is impressive, but like 2% of people give a fuck about him, let alone know who he is.

by Anonymousreply 3111/20/2012

Frank Who?

by Anonymousreply 3211/20/2012

Having watched the PBS thing, no question David Geffen. He might be the most influential gay in America.

by Anonymousreply 3311/20/2012

I'd second Dan Savage - his influence in the last five years has been enormous

by Anonymousreply 3411/20/2012

People over 30 don't count.

by Anonymousreply 3511/20/2012

Hilary Clinton

by Anonymousreply 3611/20/2012

Given his talent and qualifications (which are questionable), Savage has had great impact on current gay socio-political life.

But I agree that David Geffen matters more than most of the people on this list.

And R35, no one under 30 has done much worth noting.

by Anonymousreply 3711/20/2012

Oh, wait.

people who are influential and happen to be gay?

people who use their influence to advance gay civil rights, and happen to be gay?

by Anonymousreply 3811/20/2012

What the hell am I, chopped liver?

Oh wait, I'm not gay.

by Anonymousreply 3911/20/2012

by Anonymousreply 4011/20/2012

Jann Wenner

Dan Savage

Ellen DeGeneres

Nate Silver

Tim Cook

Barry Diller

David Geffen

These are the definites. Anderson Cooper and Rosie are still in play.

by Anonymousreply 4111/20/2012

Mrs Patrick Campbell

by Anonymousreply 4211/20/2012

I like you R38

by Anonymousreply 4311/20/2012

BTW of the people I listed at r41, there are:

2 Capricorns (Wenner, Silver)

2 Aquarians (Diller, DeGeneres)

1 Scorpio (Cook)

1 Pisces (Geffen)

1 Libra (Savage)

Maddow and O'Donnell are both Aries. Anderson Cooper is a Gemini.

by Anonymousreply 4411/20/2012

Tim Tebow

by Anonymousreply 4511/20/2012

Kaye Ballard, obviously.

by Anonymousreply 4611/20/2012

Karl Rove

by Anonymousreply 4711/20/2012

by Anonymousreply 4811/20/2012

The DL One Direction troll

by Anonymousreply 4911/23/2012

Tom Cruise

John Travolta

Whoopie Goldberg

Queen Latifah

by Anonymousreply 5011/23/2012

Michael Bloomberg
