The Official Jan Smithers thread
|by Anonymous||reply 84||03/17/2015|
Thank you! I thought she was more attractive and more interesting than Loni Anderson (and Loni was no slouch either).
Why did she and Broslin break up?
|by Anonymous||reply 1||11/19/2012|
Oh, wow. There's a blast from the past. I agree with R1. She was really underused as Bailey. There was so much potential for a cute, potentially sexy nerd. IIRC, that was the plot of one show when she had a crush on Johnny.
Whatever became of her? Her last credit was in '87.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||11/19/2012|
Yes, she just disappeared.
Jan was the prototype of the cute, sexy, competent nerd running a show - like Maura Tierney in NewsRadio and Felicity Huffman and Sabrina Lloyd in Sports Night.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||11/19/2012|
He can do better then Mr. Burns.
|by Anonymous||reply 4||11/19/2012|
There was a story that ran in 2007 in the Enquirer and picked up by many sources that she had a mental breakdown due to the death of her mother. Last I've heard of her.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||11/19/2012|
The ex-wife of Barbra Streisand's husband James Brolin is recovering in hospital after a bizarre traffic accident. Actress Jan Smithers, a star of beloved TV sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati, was driving naked when she stopped for help after her car broke down on a remote California highway in the middle of the night. She was hit by a truck after the driver caught sight of the 58-year-old waving him down too late. She has been recovering from her injuries ever since the September accident, but family members fear her health issues might be more than a few broken bones.
A family friend tells the National Enquirer she fears Smithers suffered a mental breakdown following the death of her father. The pal says, "Everyone thinks Jan felt abandoned and snapped - a complete meltdown." Ironically, police called to the scene of the accident found nothing wrong with her car and are puzzled as to why the actress stopped for help. Smithers can't remember anything about the accident or why she was driving naked in the middle of the night.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||11/19/2012|
Oh dear god, R6! As I was reading that, I thought it was a parody of Anne Heche's incident in Bakersfield or wherever. That's just tragic. The poor woman.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||11/19/2012|
There's only ONE star in this show and that's ME baby!!
|by Anonymous||reply 8||11/19/2012|
Wow hadn't heard about her naked shenanigans. It's probably 50/50 between substance abuse or bi-polar.
Too bad, I always liked her. Why did she and Brolin divorce? Was it before Babs entered the picture?
|by Anonymous||reply 9||11/19/2012|
Dismissed stories that singer Barbra Streisand had ruined her marriage to James Brolin, by pointing out that she and Brolin had parted (amicably, sharing custody of their daughter) a full five years before Streisand and Brolin got together.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||11/19/2012|
I just have to point out that only on DL would we have the OFFICIAL Jan Smithers Thread -- just to ensure we don't have a whole bunch of Jan Smithers threads running willy-nilly all over the board.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||11/19/2012|
I always got her mixed up with Marcia Strassman.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||11/19/2012|
I love the National Enquirer. She wrecks her car while driving naked, and she still only rates third billing after Barbra Streisand and James Brolin. That's cold.

I remember her as Devola, the object of lecherous Harry Dean Stanton's affection in the depressing '70s classic [italic]Where the Lilies Bloom.[/italic]
|by Anonymous||reply 14||11/19/2012|
Bump for Jan. My latent crush on her on Saturday evening TV should have been the first sign.
Remember the episode where the Russian guy defects and keeps singing "Tiny Dancer" to her?
|by Anonymous||reply 15||11/19/2012|
R15 - Yes, that was a fun episode.
Here's a picture.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||11/19/2012|
Jan had a good singing voice too. There's an episode of WKRP where they make a commercial for a funeral home. Jan as Bailey sings a verse of Amazing Grace.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||11/19/2012|
There's an episode where the crew change personalities so as too fool a consultant Mama Carlson hired. Bailey becomes an airhead.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||11/22/2012|
|by Anonymous||reply 19||02/13/2013|
We r11 I love u too
|by Anonymous||reply 20||02/13/2013|
I wonder if she was having a Lunesta moment. Or whatever sleeping pill. Lots of cases of people sleepwalking, sleepdriving etc because that shit will fuck you UP.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||02/13/2013|
I loved WKRP in Cincinnati. My favorite sitcom of all-time. Every cast member was perfect for their role. Bailey was slightly underused, but was a terrific character. I wish they would put out all four seasons on DVD with the original music, etc.
"Hold me closer, Tiny Dancer."
|by Anonymous||reply 22||02/13/2013|
Looking at the photos in this thread are making me think of Taylor Swift for some reason - I don't know why - in a way they are visually similar or like sisters or somMinething
|by Anonymous||reply 23||02/14/2013|
My favorite TV show ever. I loved Jan Smithers. I wish she was still acting. The previous poster said that every actor in the show was perfect for their role...AMEN! WKRP was smart, sexy, and hysterically funny. It didn't hurt that Gary Sandy, Tim Reid and even Howard Hesseman were hot as hell. WKRP was on the air from the time I was 13 until I was 17. Seeing the show now gives me a warm feeling and fills me with such nostalgia.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||02/14/2013|
Hello Smithers you are very good at turning me on
|by Anonymous||reply 26||03/29/2013|
take your pick

|by Anonymous||reply 29||03/29/2013|
Loni wasn't beautiful as much as she was sexy. She looks like those blonde bimbo cartoons in Playboy. There's no denying that straight guys thought she was hot, it was the key to her success. Jan looked ok I guess, but no beauty, really quite ordinary.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||03/29/2013|
Jan was strikingly beautiful, but in a tomboy, girl next door way.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||03/29/2013|
Right, well if you lower the bar enough, Jan was indeed "striking." Strikingly bland, strikingly ordinary. I'm awestruck by her wholesome blandness.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||03/29/2013|
I recently watched the episode where Bailey produced her first show and it was a disaster. Great, funny episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||05/11/2013|
am I the last to know about her 40yr.old gigolo?
|by Anonymous||reply 34||07/19/2014|
"Why did she and Brolin divorce? Was it before Babs entered the picture?"
Like Brolin left her for Babs? Biggest laugh I'll have this year.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||07/19/2014|
r22, so do I.
Jesus, I remember that episode. He was the perfect washed up hippy.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||07/19/2014|
I think I might have posted R12 over a year and a half ago.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||07/19/2014|
She was the Joyce DeWitt of "WKRP"
|by Anonymous||reply 38||07/19/2014|
I don't know who she is or if she ever did anything else but the woman who played Mother Carlson was funny as hell.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||07/19/2014|
|by Anonymous||reply 40||07/19/2014|
Mother Carlson was played by Sylvia Sidney, whose career in films stretched back to the '20s. Quite pretty, she also had a sultry quality that made her a bit of a femme fatale.She had a very brief marriage to What's My Line favorite Bennett Cerf.
Later in life, she published some books about needlepoint, which was a passion of hers. Very interesting woman. She died in 1999 at age 89.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||07/19/2014|
Sylvia Sidney ONLY played Mama Carlson once, then a look a like actress Carol Bruce took over.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||07/19/2014|
I think she was prettier than Loni.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||07/19/2014|
Sylvia Sydney was the best part of Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||07/19/2014|
R38- No she wasn't, she was the Mary Ann to Anderson's Ginger. And R39- if memory serves,I believe Mother Carlson was played by Carol Bruce. Google her, maybe there is even some of her singing on Youtube. She sang as well as acted.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||07/19/2014|
R41- I wasn't aware that Sylvia Sidney played the role first. Huh. Miss Sidney either played Auntie Mame on Broadway or did the tour. And she still absolutely breaks my heart in An American Tragedy. Beats rings around Miss Winters in A Place in the Sun.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||07/19/2014|
Right you are, R42. All these years, I remembered it as being Sylvia Sidney the whole time. Boy, is my face red.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||07/19/2014|
No she wasn't, if she was she would've been the star.
She was like the all the other dark haired uglies. Like the girl from Ted Knight's other show. Not the blonde boobie bitch.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||07/20/2014|
Here I am!
|by Anonymous||reply 49||07/20/2014|
Loni had the big chest, but Jan at the time was prettier.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||07/20/2014|
I came so many times to the bulge in Gary Sandy's jeans.
So. Many. Times.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||07/20/2014|
Gary Sandy did have a nice bulge, but his hatchet face framed by that weird pre-teen haircut turned me off.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||07/20/2014|
Anyone have WKRP gossip?
|by Anonymous||reply 53||07/20/2014|
Brolin left his first wife for Jan and they had a fake marriage ceremony while he was still married to his first wife
|by Anonymous||reply 54||07/20/2014|
Wow, r49, I would have loved to have been at that Paleyfest event. No Richard Sanders, Frank Bonner or Gary Sandy?
Shout Factory is working on a complete series release for "WKRP" with all the music intact. Would be great to get this Paleyfest reunion included as an extra.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||07/21/2014|
Oh, she looks good in the photo at R49.
Yes, much older, but she looks content-ish. I'm happy that she seems to have overcome her issues.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||07/21/2014|
I always thought Loni was rather coarse looking in the same way that I thought Jayne Mansfield was.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||07/21/2014|
Jayne was more beautiful than Loni.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||07/21/2014|
Always wanted Bailey and Andy to get together - she had a case of hero worship about him. I liked Loni, too - the receptionist made more than the station manager.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||07/25/2014|
Gary Sandy in the Speedo. Sigh.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||07/25/2014|
R59 - Johnny kind of had the hots for Bailey.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||07/25/2014|
She should've done a showbiz newscast with one of the Smothers Brothers: The Smithers-Smothers Report.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||07/25/2014|
|by Anonymous||reply 63||07/25/2014|
(R53)&(R56),see (R34)I heard something about this recently too Offline.Sad if this lovely lady is being exploited.She seems so innocent &trusting;predators see this as being vulnerable.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||07/26/2014|
I love Jan;don't want to believe this,BUT did bit of research.There's a certain "man" in Ojai whose name sounds like uncomfortable affliction& his sister's 1st name same as one who answers "fan mail"-"man"age 44.Theres a house just W.of d'town Ojai(1Bd-1Ba)."Man"had title til he lost to f'closure fall2012.Few mos. later,Jan lays out over1/4 Mil.$ CASH& pays $70K more than house listed for prior month-this is all in govt.record & real estate sites.Other search sites imply co-habitation situation.Must be nice to have Jan bail U out!Also saw business filing using Jan's name but address is residence-no business activity at that address.Looks appropriate for Official investigation!Hate to think of Jan being used like this.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||08/02/2014|
What language is R65 in?
|by Anonymous||reply 66||08/02/2014|
In her memoir, Loni says she and Gary had a pretty hot affair during the run of WKRP. She implied he was great at sex.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||08/02/2014|
|by Anonymous||reply 68||08/02/2014|
How is Loni's book?
|by Anonymous||reply 69||08/02/2014|
It's a fun read, pretty dishy, if not explicit. She doesn't spare Burt Reynolds.
|by Anonymous||reply 70||08/02/2014|
R70 - Thanks!
|by Anonymous||reply 71||08/02/2014|
I used to love her hair.
|by Anonymous||reply 72||08/02/2014|
Jan had really nice hair.
|by Anonymous||reply 73||08/02/2014|
Isn't this supposed to be a JAN SMITHERS thread?Many replies stray off topic.Example:(R66)is neither clever nor germane.If you truly do not understand (R65)post,EDUCATE YOURSELF.At least (R65)seems to CARE,and the post pertains to Jan.Wonder if (R66)is part of the problem,or just another Internet jerk who doesn't give a hoot about Karin Jan?Personally,I regard the exploitation or abuse of Jan,or ANY lady,regardless of her identity,to be upsetting,NOT a subject for levity or silly sarcasm.I hope Jan gets the help she appears to need!
|by Anonymous||reply 74||08/04/2014|
Jan looked good in the opening scene.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||09/07/2014|
|by Anonymous||reply 76||09/09/2014|
If jan smithers isnt gay than why did she have the rain bow only on her desk it was mounted to the front part of her desk.she was really good looking.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||01/12/2015|
I remember seeing the cast on the old Mike Douglas show at the time of WKRP's peak of popularity.
Mike had asked Loni Anderson what it felt like to be the beautiful, sexy one of the group and right away Loni said something like "Don't look at me! Jan is the real sex symbol of the cast, she's the real beauty"
I just thought that was so classy of Loni and so true at the time.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||01/12/2015|
R77, in the 70s that rainbow was everywhere. it was not then widely considered a "gay" thing.
My grandmother had a rainbow sticker in the rear window of her car because she thought it was pretty.
Mork from Ork wore rainbow suspenders.
Rainbows were sometimes paired with unicorns.
I think the rainbow flag for the gays really took off for good in the early 80s.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||01/12/2015|
Jan was even more beautiful in this mid 80s Love Boat episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||03/17/2015|
Tangentially related to JAN (to appease r74): how did Brolin's two older kids end up so fucked? Josh is a drunken mess and the other son lives rough on the Ojai streets. Wtf happened there? Brolin doesn't seem monstrous. Was he a shitty father?
Didn't he and Jan have a kid? what happened to he/she.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||03/17/2015|
They had a daughter named Molly.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||03/17/2015|
Her iconic Newsweek cover is cool. Link below.
She doesn't look horrible in the current pictures, but she does look older than 65.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||03/17/2015|
Wonder if Jan ever got a piece of this?
|by Anonymous||reply 84||03/17/2015|
