Abe Lincoln went to the theatre 100 times a year

....usually be himself!!! but he was a republican....I'm so confused....

Republicans pre-1965 were politically liberal. The parties switched ideology as it's constituents switched parties. Southern Democrats left the party in the 1950s and 60s and made the Republican party too conservative for already Republicans so they switched to the Democrats.

100 times a year? Obviously gay.

I think R1's response was informative. Nothing wrong with getting facts and info before the bitchery starts.

Abe was a huge Patti LuPone fan . . .

PEOPLE Magazine'a 1865 Sexiest Man Alive would surely have been John Wilkes Booth.

And yet, R4, he's completely right. And now I wonder why you're so butthurt about that comment.

Did Abe prefer Mary Martin or Ethel Merman? Or was he a secret Carol Channing stan?

At least he didn't have to live to see Streisand in "Hello, Dolly!" so it worked out quite well for him.

Abie likes Chita but not Rita.

r1 is correct. I suspect r4 is one of those tea partiers who happened to be flipping through a book about the Civil War one day and saw that the confederates and slave owners were democrats and decided to run with that ("this just proves how racist libs are!!!" he tells his tea party local chapter)

At any rate, Abe Lincoln went to the theatre a lot because everyone went to the theatre a lot. Theatres used to be on every block in every major city, and people would come and go from show to show with ease, often leaving early or arriving late. And yes, audiences shout back at the actors and throw stuff and laugh and be crude. Not at all like the "turn off your phones and unwrap your candy" preshow announcements like today.

When you have no TV, radio, internet or movies, live theatre is really your only option besides a bar or a book. Lincoln went to the theatre 100 times a year, but by no means does that make him a modern day interpretation of a showqueen. It's not like he got house seats to the Kennedy Center's Sondheim festival months in advance and then went and posted on Talkin Broadway about how miscast Brian Stokes Mitchell was as Sweeney Todd.

And r8 is right, JWB was a very, very handsome man. I'd fuck him.

Yeah he did go to the theatre a lot- but certainly not 100 times per year and certainly NOT during critical periods in the war.

[quote]Or was he a secret Carol Channing stan?

Changing "America" to "CarolChanningstan" was the part of his second term agenda that got him shot.

Going to the theater in those times is akin to someone frequenting the local movie theater today. Some filmgoers (especially buffs and cinephiles) attend more than 100 times.

Happy 179th birthday to Edwin Booth. A better actor than his brother John, and his reputation was utterly destroyed but rebuilt because of his brother's crimes. Edwin was a supporter of the north and often clashed with John over political views. Edwin was the first actor to perform 100 performances of Hamlet in a row. He also unknowingly saved Abe Lincoln's son Robert from being hit by a train.

Happy Birthday Mr. Booth.

Edwin was okay . . . but I got an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

You queens do know that Republicans USED to be the liberal party. That has since changed. Conservatives are not responsible for ANY change that is now on the wrong side of history.
