Canadian Dataloungers - Is Obama's win making you depressed about the state of Canada?
For all the talk about the US being so progressive, states being pro-pot and Obama's decisive win. Does it depress you being Canadian?
We have a conservative government just like Romney, and they want to take us back to the 50s!
As a Canadian I'm depressed that Canada is moving backwards, not forward like Obama.
How about you?

Where in Canada do you reside? Canada is leaps and bounds more progressive than the US. The US has the South holding it back. Look at states like Vermont which is so close to Canada and filled with Canadian-type people. They're very progressive. Warmer weather attracts the lackadaisical worldwide. Colder temps ignite innovation and progression by necessity.

r1, Vermont being close to Canada is
1) forgetting that Alaska also borders Canada, and
2) sounds almost as dim as Palin's reasoning that Alaska is close to Russia.

Op, you're a little bit stupid, so I'll be very direct. Canada is light years ahead of the U.S. on social and economic fronts. The U.S. is certainly on the right track with Obama leading the charge to make profound gains provided the right wing will work productively with him. While I am not a fan of Canada's conservative government, Conservatism in Canada is nowhere near as draconian as it has been protrayed in the U.S. through the recent campaign.

Canada is still way, way ahead of the US in terms of sensible politics (and people).
You have lived through conservative leadership before, you'll be fine. I lived in Toronto under Brian Mulroney and things turned out all right after his tenure.
Buck up, Canadian OP, and sleep well, secure in the knowledge that your Canadian Parliament does NOT contain a goddamn fucking TEABAGGER faction running the show.

Canada’s new law provides a mandatory six-month jail term for growing as few as six marijuana plants, twice the mandatory minimum for luring a child to watch pornography or exposing oneself on a playground.
“Today our message is clear that if you are in the business of producing, importing or exporting of drugs, you’ll now face jail time,” Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said in a release Tuesday, before U.S. polls closed.
That is Canada being progressive?

In Canada, alone in a private home, a Toronto man was holding a loaded handgun that apparently didn’t belong to him, and trying to take a photo of himself on a laptop.
He got sentenced to THREE years in jail, for just holding a loaded gun as a joke.

A Riverside, California, woman says Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers pulled her aside and ultimately denied her entry Oct 22 because she is transgender.
the federal Ministry of Transport, as part of its passenger-protection program, had introduced changes to the identity screening regulations that state that an air carrier “shall not transport a passenger if the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents.”

Liberal Canadians, like American Republicans, refuse to recognize that their countries have changed. Liberal Canadians still think Harper was a fluke, just as US Republicans thought Obama was. Harper isn't going anywhere, just as Obama's reelection proved that he isn't going anywhere. America has officially changed. The demographics are permanently altered.
The days of Canada being a Liberal oasis are over. That's what happens. Nothing is forever. Canada is now having to deal with the issue of becoming an ever-growing melting pot, and that's causing problems, something Conservatives will exploit. Does that mean Canada has gone 100% Conservative at the moment, no, but it's going to continue growing, and it's grown a lot already. How many Canadians on here proclaimed that Harper wouldn't move further to the Right, and wouldn't make references to religion, etc. Hey sorry, he has.
Until Canadian Liberals accept the state of their country, they're going to continue running on an outdated model, one that modern Canadians cannot get behind, nor vote for.
Continue you with excuses and denials. Reality is reality, and no amount of bitching will manipulate that fact. Go ahead, throw a fit on here.

Exactly R9 Some of the responses here are quite shocking.
The poster talking about Brian Mulroney, he was a Red Tory from Quebec. Traditional conservatives felt he wasn't Conservative enough, hence the Reform Party Movement.
Canada is slowly going down the tubes, and people are just not recognizing it.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||11/09/2012|
Other way round, R9. Harper's conservatives could only win elections by turning themselves INTO the Liberal party: immigrant friendly, pro-gay marriage etc. It was a clever move but it's what infuriates the tiny remnant of true social conservatives on the back bench; they feel Harper has sold out the original vision of the Reform Party.
When Justin Trudeau assumes the Liberal leadership, things will get interesting. I think we're headed for another tectonic shift in Canadian politics.

Yeah Canada has really gone downhill. It's still a pretty great place but it used to be much better. Things felt more positive.

Harper's days are numbered. He won't be around that long.

You have no idea OP...... I feel like my Country has been under siege since 2006.
Because of this, I have been drawing more towards my European roots and becoming less loving of Canada.
