Gay voters were 5% of the electorate, went 77% for Obama.

That is the highest percentage of voters they have self-identified as gay(or bi) so far.

So that was roughly 6 million gay Americans who voted in this election. A fairly important demographic, for instance Asian Americans were only 3% of the electorate.

Still can't be believe that 27% voted for Romney, someone who supported a constitutional amendment to keep us as second class citizens. Still that is a lower percentage of the gay vote than McCain got.

Anyway, interesting to know.

How did they get 5%?

Shouldn't this read, "among those who told us they were."?

by Anonymousreply 111/08/2012

That should have been 23%* who voted for Romney. And yes this is based on exit polling data, so obviously those who self-identify as gay/bisexual.

Cabinettes invariably vote around 25% of the gay vote. Bush got around that much in both elections. I remember there was a substantial amount of skepticism on DL in previous elections that so many gays "betrayed" their own kind, but maybe people have finally accepted that gays are only one of NUMEROUS parties who vote against their own self-interests by voting Republican (women, the working class, Latinos, etc.).

Since Obama won with just under 3 million votes, you could say that gays put him over the top.

You actually can R4. Amusingly enough if you remove gay/bisexuals, among straight people the vote was split evenly 49%/49%.

When you add us the popular vote changes to favor Obama.

Of course you can parse numbers a lot like that, but I do think it is cool fact.
