Obama Is The First President To Receive 50% In Both Their First and Second Term Since FDR?

Chris Matthews brought this up, but I can't remember the exact phrasing. Does anyone know? I think he said the first since FDR, and then someone back a century prior. Obama was at 49% at the time, and Matthews was hoping he'd get to 50% to make history.

I remember that too, and found it interesting.

I know Clinton got less than 50% both times he was elected, but did Reagan really get less than 50% in both his? I can't remember...

But it's interesting if so, and really goes against the GOP narrative doesn't it?

Jesus Christ, I was born in 1982 and I know the answer to this.

R2, that shows Reagan got 50%+ in 1980... what was the margin ein 1984? If it was also greater than 50%, then Matthews was wrong.

Matthews isn't stupid, I'm sure he meant "the first Democrat" to get 50% since FDR.

r2 wipes back to front.

Matthews didn't say "the first to get 50%", he said "the first two term president to get 50% in BOTH elections"...

And yeah, Reagan did it, so he must have meant first Democratic President to do it since FDR.

Reagan got over 50% in both 1980 and 1984 (the win in 84 was even bigger than in 80).

Did you not read this thread's title, hon?

R7... *I* did... I was pointing out that R2 apparently did not.

And there's this, which was more widely noted:
Only the second time since FDR, and first time this century
If Barack Obama is elected to a second term, it will be only the second time a Democrat has been elected to a full second term as President since Franklin Roosevelt. Only Bill Clinton can make that claim. Harry Truman only won one election (1948). JFK was killed during his first term. Lyndon Johnson only won one election (1964). Jimmy Carter only won one election (1976).

He said the first [bold]Democratic[/bold] President to receive 50%+ in both elections since FDR.
