Visiting for a few days and I was wondering what the local scene was like. Anyone have any suggestions or tips about where to go to have some fun and maybe check out some hot guys?
Gay bars and bathhouses in San Diego
|by Anonymous||reply 29||10/19/2013|
I would start in the "gay quarter" of Hillcrest (some of it spills over into North Park). There is a bathhouse on 4th Avenue there as well as one downtown called the Vulcan baths at 843 Cedar St. For the Vulcan Baths, you would be well advised to take the bus/trolley as parking there is almost non-existent; lockers there are discounted on Mondays and Wednesdays. If you do drive, bear in mind that parking meters aren't monitored on Sundays so good luck finding a spot. The Brass Rail in Hillcrest might be a good place to start bar hopping, from there you might be able to pick up a free publication listing most of the bars and baths (although there are only 2, the ones I mentioned). There is one dance club in Hillcrest also but can't recall the name. Googling this might help too. City Deli, also in Hillcrest, is gay owned and not a bad place to eat--it is sort of Jewish oriented. Hope this helps.....

Two bathhouses: The Vulcan on West Cedar near Little Italy and downtown. Decent place, lowkey; not entirely, but tends toward an older clientele. Clean, safe. Parking is tight but not nonexistent, and there are nearby lots. Rooms, lockers, showers, team and sauna; outdoor patio. Regular TV and two porn video rooms with current porn.
Club San Diego: in Hillcrest on Fourth Avenue between Washington Street and Universiy Avenue. Larger place, not always the cleanest place, safe. Most times unbearably loud music; showers, small sauna; larger steamroom where most of the action takes place; rooms, lockers. Porn video room shows a lot of out of date pirated videos. Not entirely, but generally a younger crowd, can sometimes have a sleazy feel. Street parking.

Does San Diego still have any leather or dark skeevy gay bars?
|by Anonymous||reply 3||11/03/2012|
Can anyone tell me how the bathouse experience is in general? I'm still young and haven't been...do you walk in and then guys are in rooms presenting hole just waiting? I'm curious...
|by Anonymous||reply 4||11/03/2012|
R3. No. Maybe The Hole on Sunday eve, but then it's actually a big community social gathering.
R4. No, there's a lot of walking around. Some guys havee their doors open, some don't. And some don't want you just walking in. You can actually spend several hours in a bathhouse and not have sex. It's still a matter of chemistry and finding someone who turns you on and vice versa. But if you show some willingness, or even just start jacking off in the steamroom, someone will join in with you.

Why are bathhouses even still around? Isn't that what the internet is for? I don't get it.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||11/03/2012|
R6. At a bathhouse, you can actually click with someone and have sex or just escape into a place with other men, be nude, wear a towel and feel erotic, etc. On the Internet, you'll spend hours alone and rarely or never actually connect with anyone. You may chat and then maybe jack-off alone.

I'm a big fan of Bourbon Street (on Park Blvd, not in Hillcrest). I visited from Chicago a few years ago with a couple girlfriends a night or two after NYE (notoriously slow bar nights). While the girls chatted, I struck up a great conversation with a really cute bartender. He ended up not charging me for any of my drinks (~ 3 rounds). The girls were jokingingly pissed/jealous they had to pay for theirs. I've been a fan of that bar ever since. Just a really good vibe.

I lived in SD and Bourbon St was the only bar I enjoyed. It's not too loud, it's half outdoors (courtyard) and was always a pretty good time. Bingo nights were fun lol

I had a hot three way with two military jarheads at club san diego.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||11/03/2012|
Personally, I prefer The Vulcan. There's just something unpleassant and unappealing about Club San Diego.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||11/03/2012|
I have always found Bourbon Street, as well as most other gay bars in San Diego to be crashing bores. If you want something more exciting I have always found that driving 140 miles north to Los Angeles and West Hollywood in particular is a better alternative. Personally, if sex happens in a bathhouse that's fine, but I also think they're just nice places to be to soak in a jacuzzi or "take a steam", it's a leisurely, healthy way to get clean and older porn r2 is better if only because the actors aren't disfigured with tattoos, but, to each his own, there is no accounting for taste. r6, you need to get out more, staring at a computer screen isn't the answer to everything.

You're right r11--I had been going to Club San Diego for a long time then just recently made the effort to find the Vulcan and have been going there ever since and it's slightly cheaper too.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||11/03/2012|
What bars do gay military guys go to? Adult bookstores with gloryholes?
|by Anonymous||reply 14||11/03/2012|
R12. The porn at Club San Diego is bad, old and blurry. The porn at The Vulcan is clear, like watching high definition TV.
There might be a bit more action at Club San Diego because it's a bit busier at times and younger than The Vulcan. But Club San Diego has a sleazy feel to it. And on a sunny day, The Vulcan has an outdoor patio where you lay out naked. The blaring music at Club San Diego is obnoxious. It's not a goddamn disco, it's a bathhouse where it might be nice to relax a bit--but you can't at the Club San Diego.
The staff at The Vulcan is a lot more personable. Club San Diego staff is often rude and dismissive.

I have to chuckle at your post r15 as I guess alot of it is true, but truth also be told, I've tossed my carrot many a time to Club San Diego's porn, partly because you can find a more private place to do it there, at the Vulcan you're pretty much in a goldfish bowl which I guess is what most guys might be after but not necessarily for me (maybe sometimes). We must differ on the music at Club San Diego as I've always enjoyed it while I steam or soak or jack off but The Vulcan's music is OK too I guess. I agree about the staff at Vulcan, I liked the way the guy at the front desk called me "hon" when I was checking out there the other day. The patio at Vulcan is OK but not really my thing, I'm not so sure that too much sun is a good idea.

Military guys go to any bar, nowhere in particular, but probably to Rich's, the biggest gay dance bar located on University Avenue. Also neighborhood type bars, Urban Mo's, Pecs and Bourbon Street.
The days of adult bookstores with glory holes are over. All the video rooms have doors that are cut off at your knees and highly monitored. Sex at the bookstore used to be jumpin', but those days have passed.

For those who just might want a place to be naked for a hot steam, sauna and jacuzzi, there is "Aqua," a Korean day spa in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego. It's not a big place, but it's very relaxing. And it's not a bathhouse, but there are a number of gay guys who go there; also several married men who are gay and don't want the bathhouse scene.
It really is a day spa. But there is a certain amount of lowkey cruising that goes on. Sometimes, there is a bit of jacking off in the sauna. But again, it's very lowkey and yo have to be careful since the attendant is always walking around. But it's a relaxing place.
There is also a relaxtion room where you can go to sleep naked. There is some jacking off that happens there, but not always. But it's nice laying on the mats naked. And in the cooler months, the floor is heated, so it lulls you into a relaxing rest. The place is very clean, plenty of towels, and bathrobes are available if you don't want to be naked all the time. But in some respects, it can be a more naked place than a bathhouse.

San Diego's hottest nightclub is Thriwsft. It has midget Mary Poppins, a steam porn room, Richard Lewis drag kings and the new york nanny murderer.

How were the baths tonight, boys?
|by Anonymous||reply 20||11/03/2012|
The Lamplighter on western Washington Avenue is always voted San Diego's best karaoke bar. A mostly straight crowd, but some gays do go there to participate. And Urban Mo's, by University and 4th, was voted Best Gay/Lesbian Bar.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||11/03/2012|
I highly recommend Martini's over 4th...good, strong drinks and cute waiters.
I've never done the bathhouse thing, but pretty much any bar in Hillcrest off University Dr. will be gay. Flicks is a video bar (cheap drinks), Mo's is a good starter place/brunch spot, and Cabo Cantina has 2 for 1 most of the night.
SD has lots of young, in shape guys. Pecs is more the older, scruffier type of man's-man bar.
Whatever you do, make sure you have the Scruff app on your phone. You'll get plenty of action from that.

There have to be more than those mentioned here. Come on, this is San Diego.

SD sex bump
|by Anonymous||reply 25||10/03/2013|
Sadly, The Vulcan Steam & Sauna downtown has closed. I liked that place and miss it especially the outdoor patio in the summer where you could lay out naked. The Vulcan was very relaxing and a great place to escape from the world.
Club San Diego in Hillcrest is still in business. The sex happens there, although it's not as nice and relaxing as The Vulcan, but it's the only bathhouse in San Diego now.
