Going out to meet people who 'share your interests'

From personal experience, this doesn't work.

Someone suggested this on another thread to someone who was complaining that he's lonely.

I have a variety of interests and have occasionally been to meet-ups and the like...but just because someone else likes '60s pop music' or 'Looking For Mr Goodbar' does not mean we're cut out to be friends. No, siree...not AT ALL.

A thread on DL about these subjects is fine. The thread dies a natural death and we all move on.

Have you ever joined a group or been to a meet-up with people who 'share your interests'? How did you get along?

Agreed OP. I hate when someone complains that they're lonely or all their friends are dead because they're older than dirt, and the first response is either "do volunteer work" or "join a club".

I agree OP. The only way I've ever found to "meet new people" that actually works (that is... introduces you to new quality people with similar interests) is through mutual friends. It takes time and timing.
