Jonathan Rhys Meyers IS Dracula!
In what is easily the best news we've heard all damned day, Deadline, has learned that Dan Knauf, creator of the cult HBO series "Carnivale," has joined NBCâs upcoming 10-episode series "Dracula" as showrunner/head writer, working with series creator Cole Haddon.
NBC's "Dracula" will feature Jonathan Rhys Meyers ("The Tudors", Shelter, Velvet Goldmine) as the iconic vampire. The series, from producers Tony Krantz and Colin Callender and writer Cole Haddon, is being produced for both NBC and the UKâs Sky Living. It was originally bought by NBC in January with a âscript-to-seriesâ commitment, meaning that it wouldnât go through a pilot stage but straight to series if NBC brass liked the script.
"Dracula" is produced by Krantzâs Flame Ventures, Callenderâs Playground Entertainment, Universal TV, and NBCU International Prods.â Carnival Films & Television, the company behind "Downton Abbey". Krantz and Callender are executive producing the series with Gareth Neame and Anne Mensah. Haddon and Flameâs Reece Pearson co-executive produce. Based on an idea by Krantz, it is set in the 1890s and has been described as âDangerous Liaisons meets 'The Tudors,'â which is fitting given that "Tudors" star Meyers has been tapped to play the title role. The new series reunites Meyers with NBC's Bob Greenblatt, who cast the Irish actor in "The Tudors" while running Showtime. As a producer, Greenblatt gave Meyers his first starring role in the CBS telefilm Elvis, which was overseen by Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria, then head of CBSâ movies and miniseries division.
In the NBC/Sky Living series Dracula (Meyers) arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier but falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. âIt is a timeless tale with relevant, surprising twists and turns with the exquisite Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the marquee role,â Bajaria said.

NBC? I would think that it would be better show it on cable.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||10/09/2012|
JRM went from Elvis to Henry VIII to Dracula. Is Jesus Christ next?
|by Anonymous||reply 4||10/09/2012|
Finally, someone casts him in an appropriate role!
He sucked so bad as Henry VIII, he's got to do something to make up for it.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||10/09/2012|
This needs to be on cable. Can't imagine it having any heat if it's on broadcast network. What will be the point of another porduction of Dracula if we can't see tits, ass and full frontal bulge? I can just watch TrueBlood. An ORIGINAL take on Vampires.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||10/09/2012|
Hasn't the vampire craze pretty much run its course by now? I'm sure the final TWILIGHT will rake it in, but otherwise aren't audiences pretty much "over" vamps? I don't believe TRUE BLOOD gets the audience size it used to (and the show is just plain awful now anyway).
|by Anonymous||reply 7||10/09/2012|
I don't think the problem is doing Dracula on network television. This is the problem:
[quote]In reality he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier but falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. “It is a timeless tale with relevant, surprising twists and turns
This is schmatz Dracula, you know? This is plotting for the fraus and the tweens. I was initially going to comment that network TV doesn't have to necessarily be limited by its no nudity format. Talented writers can create erotic suggestion, costuming and lighting can be employed to create effect, etc. But nothing can overcome bad plotting.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||10/09/2012|
His version will prowl at night because he's on coke!
|by Anonymous||reply 9||10/09/2012|
Does anyone know if he has been able to maintain any sobriety since his last rehab? I have think he is if NBC is willing to take him on given his history. Ten episodes is a large financial commitment. It seems like something of a risk if half are in the can and he goes off on a binge he can't easily stop. It sounded like at least one episode was like that, though I'm not sure if it interfered with any filming.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||10/09/2012|
I can't imagine this being a hit.
Also, am I the only one who thinks this guy is gay? I know he's been linked to women, but my gaydar goes off whenever I see this guy or hear him talk.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||12/29/2012|
I dunno, R11. The fact that the network exec who developed SMASH has been fostering his career since a TV movie in 2002 is a little suspect...
|by Anonymous||reply 12||12/29/2012|
R12 Oh really? I didn't knwo that. Tell us more.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||12/29/2012|
Just context clues I inferred from the article, R13.
"The new series reunites Meyers with NBC's Bob Greenblatt, who cast the Irish actor in "The Tudors" while running Showtime. As a producer, Greenblatt gave Meyers his first starring role in the CBS telefilm Elvis, which was overseen by Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria, then head of CBS’ movies and miniseries division."
|by Anonymous||reply 14||12/29/2012|
[quote]am I the only one who thinks this guy is gay?
No. There have been gay rumours about JRM for a good 10 years.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||12/30/2012|
R15 Do you think maybe being in the closet is why he has all these alcohol/drug problems?
|by Anonymous||reply 16||12/30/2012|
That's one of the theories, yes, R16, but part of it could also be because of his difficult background growing up, the breakup of his parents' marriage, the loss of his Mom at only age 50 etc.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||12/30/2012|
I wonder if he's a top, bottom, or both...
|by Anonymous||reply 18||12/30/2012|
I don't know, R18, but he has a big uncut cock that he showed off frequently in his younger days.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||12/30/2012|
A trailer from NBC has been released:
|by Anonymous||reply 20||05/21/2013|
JRM plays Dracula while I play Superman.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||05/21/2013|
[quote]In reality he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life... but falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.
Wasn't this a Columbo episode?
|by Anonymous||reply 22||05/21/2013|
I love watching him on screen. I'll at least watch it once.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||05/21/2013|
I get the feeling this will be cancelled soon after it starts. It just seems so cheesy and dated.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||05/21/2013|
Does he still look like a male Scarlett Johansson?
|by Anonymous||reply 25||05/21/2013|
I thought it looked pretty good. I do have doubts about Meyers as Dracula though.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||05/21/2013|
R25 He's still beautiful if that's what you mean.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||05/21/2013|
R27 Beautiful my ass. He looks rode HARD these days. This is what he looks like now without makeup.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||05/21/2013|
when is this suppose to air?
|by Anonymous||reply 29||05/31/2013|
I want him to suck on my neck and my dick.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||10/19/2013|
Oh you mean he has a role as Dracula. I thought you were pontificating on his private life.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||10/19/2013|
article about JRM and farmer
|by Anonymous||reply 34||10/19/2013|
Holy shit, look at his mother - and she died at 50?
She's 49 in this picture. That's the hardest 49 I've ever seen.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||10/19/2013|
The article mentions that she was an alcoholic.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||10/19/2013|
So he got it from his mother then. Sad.
He is so, so incredibly good-looking though.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||10/22/2013|
Have you seen him lately? He looks like he got bad work done on his eyes.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||10/22/2013|
Sad, sad story (the one linked). Yeah, I think he was definitely abused by that farmer.
He has a lot of "demons" to slay. I hope he stays on the wagon.
R11, do you have a link to the pictures pls?
|by Anonymous||reply 39||10/22/2013|
Here's an example. Something is off with that face, and I don't think it's booze or meth.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||10/22/2013|
Does he remind anyone of the singer Prince at R40? If so, why?
|by Anonymous||reply 42||10/22/2013|
Another vampire series. Yawn.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||10/22/2013|
The link works for me... Google image "Jonathan Rhys Meyers" and "Sheridan Smith" in the same search.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||10/22/2013|
It's funny.. I thought it was Johnny Depp at first. Maybe they had the same plastic surgery procedure lol.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||10/22/2013|
R46, I was making a joke about the link being worse @R43 because JRM's looks are far worse than an actual bad link (@R40).
|by Anonymous||reply 48||10/22/2013|
I think he is a very talented actor, and I heard he is always gracious to his fans; sadly, he seems self destructive. Some people just don't realize their worth. I will be rooting for him in his new show
|by Anonymous||reply 49||10/22/2013|
JRM is a stunningly handsome man and a good actor. I'm looking forward to the series.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||10/22/2013|
ANOTHER fucking vampire tv show!
Jesus Christ, will this played put vampire theme EVER die! I mean, there have been MULTIPLE new vampire-themed show each of the last few seasons! Is that the height of creativity in Hollywood?
|by Anonymous||reply 51||10/22/2013|
I agree. This vampire shit is really tired.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||10/22/2013|
R53 Are you black (I'm guessing yes because mostly black people do the "co-sign" remarks)? If so, you do know that he's a racist, don't you? So think before you go praising him.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||10/22/2013|
Lord, how would I know if he is a racist? I didn't praise him, I agreed with him.
How would you know that I am black?
You are presumptuous. Best stop there son.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||10/22/2013|
[quote]Best stop there son.
After that line - definitely black!
|by Anonymous||reply 56||10/22/2013|
that ex-girlfriend he had for donkey years, wasn't she ethnic? I've only seen a few pictures of them together, never read the articles etc. She's not white, so how can he be racist? She's an heiress but guess she got tired of his ways.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||10/22/2013|
R55 is meant for R54.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a babe and a good actor. I agree with R50.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||10/22/2013|
He did the mash. He did the monster mash.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||10/23/2013|
[quote]She's not white, so how can he be racist?
I can't believe you people still exist.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||10/23/2013|
Good reviews and the hotness that is JRM? I'm there dude.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||10/23/2013|
Jonathan is perfect playing Dracula, very happy with the rave reviews.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||10/23/2013|
DVR'ed it and am watching now.
They should have set it during the present not the late 1800s.
|by Anonymous||reply 63||10/27/2013|
The show has potential. Suck it haters.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||10/27/2013|
I fell asleep - too talky.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||10/27/2013|
JRM has the tiniest rodent eyes. They always look bloodshot and painful.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||10/27/2013|
Review of the first episode from Den of Geek (posted on another Jonathan Rhys Meyers is DRACULA! thread--because we need more than one because JRM is SO HOT, like Johnny Depp untainted by the baggage of a long Hollywood history)
|by Anonymous||reply 69||10/27/2013|
In that scene of him dressing, right near the beginning of the show after he's revived, do we get a glimpse of his pubes? On NBC?
|by Anonymous||reply 70||10/27/2013|
The show is sumptuously produced, but I'm annoyed at the attempt to refashion Dracula into an anti-hero fighting against a greater evil. And I seem to be in the distinct minority here, but I don't find JRM terribly attractive. Plus, he looked high in most scenes in the premiere ... and I don't think he's being well served by having to adopt an American accent.
|by Anonymous||reply 72||10/27/2013|
In that scene of him dressing, right near the beginning of the show after he's revived, do we get a glimpse of his pubes? On NBC?
|by Anonymous||reply 73||10/30/2013|
I agree r72, I don't like the American accent at all. I watched the first 20 minutes and I'm done. Vampires are tedious.
|by Anonymous||reply 74||10/30/2013|
I watched this and enjoyed it, but isn't it just the Barnabus Collins storyline on Dark Shadows with a bigger budget?
|by Anonymous||reply 75||10/30/2013|
I like Victoria Smurfit, the actress who was in two of my favorite British series, Berkeley Square and Trial and Retribution.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||10/30/2013|
He can bite my neck if he likes.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||11/01/2013|
Hot. Is that tattoo real?
|by Anonymous||reply 78||11/01/2013|
Oooh!!! He gave a peck on the mouth to some dude in last nights episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||11/02/2013|
Are either of the actors playing the secretly gay couple actually gay?
|by Anonymous||reply 80||11/08/2013|
I didn't watch tonight, I can catch it On Demand, as Comcast calls it.
Maybe that's the problem. Gay guys (and het women) who might like this aren't watching it at that time. On Demand viewing, sans ads, wouldn't be measured by the rating services.
I've only seen the first two episodes but they were beautifully filmed, albeit talky, stodgy, and sadly unerotic--even with JRM who looks great. He seems to laid off the liquor.
If you like vampire things, it's worth a look but don't get hooked. NBC won't stick by something as esoteric as this.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||11/09/2013|
OMM is after this show big time. They've sent letters to all their churchy frauen.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||11/09/2013|
Tiffani Thiessen is a fat facer!
|by Anonymous||reply 83||11/09/2013|
Wrong show, R83.
How heartbreaking!!!. Poor guys.
Its interesting too that the Kiera Knightly doppelganger might be in love with Mina.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||11/09/2013|
I kinda like this show, but JRS just doesn't *look* like Dracula to me. Too moonfaced. Not tall and elegant enough.
And when is this guy gonna turn into a bat? I wanna see him turn into a bat.
|by Anonymous||reply 85||11/09/2013|
'Cause that would be cool, R85.
Seeing JRM yesterday was eye opening. For some reason I thought that he was skinny, venturing on scrawny, but he is sort of beefy. He is not skinny at all. His clothes make him look slim and elegant.
I almost didn't think it was him and that it was a body double.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||11/09/2013|
The show is a flop - each week the ratings get worse, and last night it had its' worst ratings yet.
This show definitely won't be renewed after these 10 episodes finish airing.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||11/09/2013|
I love JRM. He's beautiful and a good actor, but I just don't like vampires. I never understood the appeal. I tried watching because of him but I can't get into it.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||11/09/2013|
This is a co-production made by the company that makes Downton (Downton is also NBC ). So British viewers on Sky Living and international sales are also important. The cast is British and it looks great.I think they will make another series.
It is British Tv on an American station which is an experiment.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||11/11/2013|
[quote]It is British Tv on an American station which is an experiment.
And so far it's failed.
|by Anonymous||reply 90||11/11/2013|
I tried watching the first episode but was so bored I wound up backing up my computer, balancing my check book....
|by Anonymous||reply 91||11/11/2013|
The article linked below claims that Meyers pay was largely held back until he completed all 10 episodes due to his "problems". He was paid 100K per episode.
He had a "meltdown" on set and a sober coach was with him rest of the way and after he finished filming, he went to rehab (again).
|by Anonymous||reply 92||11/15/2013|
Well they killed off the two gay characters and the black guy is getting tortured by wealthy white people so they'll get a GLAAD award in no time.
|by Anonymous||reply 93||11/15/2013|
" CUT! "
"Johnathan, how many time must we go over this? You bite him on the NECK, this part UP HERE , and suck his blood. Why is your aim always so off? "
|by Anonymous||reply 94||11/15/2013|
He's so beautiful. Sad that he's so troubled.
|by Anonymous||reply 95||11/16/2013|
Why does he wear modern driving gloves? I think they look hot on a guy, but the type he wears aren't from that era.
|by Anonymous||reply 96||11/24/2013|
The show s getting better. It took three episodes to get going.
|by Anonymous||reply 97||12/04/2013|
I just haven't been able to get into the show. When watching I'm constantly on my phone or doing something else. It just doesn't hold my attention.
Katie McGrath was better on Merlin, I can't stand her in this and I can't stand Xaro Xhoan Daxos either.
|by Anonymous||reply 98||12/04/2013|
Saw some recent pics of him - these ones were at the Lady Gaga concert a couple days ago. And quite frankly I don't think he looks very good. Is his lifestyle catching up with him? He looks drawn in the face and, well, just plain miserable. I hope he gets his act together.
|by Anonymous||reply 99||12/09/2013|
[quote]Katie McGrath was better on Merlin
That was a terrible show - I'm glad the BBC stopped it after 5 seasons and is now focused full-time on Doctor Who.
As for JRM, he's been a heavy drinker & smoker for years and it's time he stopped.
