Dorothy Loudon was fucking amazing

Here she is in an early version of The Facts of Life.

OMG she was a treasure. Thank you SO much for posting this! I am in fits of gay joy over here :)

by Anonymousreply 109/21/2012

Glad there's somebody else here who appreciates this!

by Anonymousreply 209/21/2012

Big deal!

by Anonymousreply 309/21/2012

No words to describe her. This made my night. Thank you.

by Anonymousreply 409/21/2012

Big deal!

by Anonymousreply 509/21/2012

Eh.

by Anonymousreply 609/21/2012

Her singing in this particular song reminds me of Judy Henske. Anybody familiar with her?

by Anonymousreply 709/21/2012

I love Judy Henske!!

by Anonymousreply 809/21/2012

What a voice.

by Anonymousreply 909/21/2012

Wow, thanks r8, I'd never heard of Henske. She kind of reminds me of Barbara Dane.

Barbara's version of Deportees (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) is astounding.

by Anonymousreply 1009/21/2012

Ehh, I've heard better versions of "Hannah."

In 1983 I was at a New Year's Eve party in Chelsea and Dorothy Loudon showed up after having done a performance of Noises Off on Broadway. It was an intimate party, there were probably only a dozen of us there. Dorothy sat down at the piano and sang to us. She was fabulous. The thing which struck us as very poignant was that she felt she HAD to perform and not just enjoying the celebration. I remember several people saying "No! No! You're our guest!" But she wouldn't have it. It was clear she was extremely sad and lonely when her beloved husband died. Maybe performing kept her from having to be herself and exposing her sadness to us. That's one New Year's Eve I'll never forget.

God, I hate people who feel they "must" entertain at small, intimate parties. I don't care who they are.

But I guess star-struck name droppers are impressed by such things.

by Anonymousreply 1309/21/2012

Nice!

by Anonymousreply 1409/21/2012

Thanks, Op - never heard of her before but dig that growl!

by Anonymousreply 1509/21/2012

r12 You're so lucky! I saw her in Noises Off. She was incredible. Then I made the mistake of seeing the revival with Jane Curtin in her role. I thought it would never end!

by Anonymousreply 1609/21/2012

Can't stand Louden. She was one of those "everything but the kitchen sink" performers. Too big, too loud, too needy. It's not surprising at all that she insisted on performing at that party.

by Anonymousreply 1709/22/2012

The Devils of Loudon.

by Anonymousreply 1809/22/2012

She's around 55 in that video and I'd have pegged her for about 10 years younger.

This is the GAYest post I've read on here for a very long time. I adore it. The whole scenario. I'd like to frame R12's post and keep it forever.

How can you say this? Has it happened to you often? I'd be in heaven.

It reminds me of the Friends episode where the widow sings to her guests at her husband's post funeral gathering, but refuses to pay Phoebe who's done the catering because she's 'in mourning'.

by Anonymousreply 2009/22/2012

Perhaps Loudon found the conversation boring, but not wanting to be alone, stayed and sang.

by Anonymousreply 2109/22/2012

At the Tonys performing Easy Street...

by Anonymousreply 2209/26/2012

Cuties

by Anonymousreply 2309/26/2012

Big Deal, and she never sucked MY cock!

by Anonymousreply 2409/26/2012

Friday night ballsy-gal bump.

by Anonymousreply 2512/07/2012

At least Mrs. Garrett could shake like Jell-O

by Anonymousreply 2612/07/2012

Blair and Jo were so enthralled by Ms. Loudon's performance they both disappeared upstairs for half an hour to "regain their composure."

by Anonymousreply 2712/07/2012

Eldergays!

by Anonymousreply 2812/07/2012

Very cool to see Linda Manz in that clip.

by Anonymousreply 2912/07/2012

Why would a junior high school student body be interested in any performance of Hard Hearted Hannah?

by Anonymousreply 3012/07/2012

She's was a juicy old ham, uncured. It's very hard to take a performer who is so needy and desperate for Ttention.

by Anonymousreply 3112/08/2012

She was definitely talented but, for me, meant strictly for the stage. I fins her exhausting in OP's clip.

by Anonymousreply 3212/08/2012

This was not The Fats of Life and certainly not an early version of it. It was a 1979 summer replacement sitcom called "Dorothy", which aired the same summer Fats started (i.e. already in the video "can")

by Anonymousreply 3312/08/2012

Ah you beat me to it, R33.

And correct you are. "Dorothy" started 16 days before "The Facts of Life", the latter being the Diff'rent Strokes spinoff with Charlotte Rae and a built in audience.

Dorothy was on CBS, Facts on NBC.

by Anonymousreply 3412/08/2012

I worked with her for about the last 5 years of her life. My partner and I spent Xmas Eve with her at least 4 times. She had champagne and caviar and after a couple of pops, she would sit down at her piano and sing 4 or 5 songs. It was incredible to witness. I miss her.

by Anonymousreply 3512/08/2012

Meh. She really couldn't handle film acting.

by Anonymousreply 3612/08/2012

This is the Dorothy Loudon I remember.

A good singer and a great entertainer, who liked to entertain. Old fashioned. Ha.

If you prefer to watch someone like Audra MacDonald, seek out any small town opera company. Trust me, she is there, refusing to sing.

Dorothy was the shit.
