Charlotte, NC

They call their downtown "uptown." Rather pretentious, don't you think?

by Anonymousreply 4604/27/2015

No, it isn't pretentious; it's a Southern thing you don't understand.

by Anonymousreply 109/02/2012

Charlotte is so beautiful. Uptown or downtown or even the surrounding suburbs. The freeways are lined with lush green. I just love it.

Hillary had her headquarter in a posh area downtown. Across the street was filled with high-end boutiques.

North and South Carolina are just beautiful in general. Heck, the South is beautiful. The people, not so much.

by Anonymousreply 209/02/2012

"high-end boutiques"

This is Charlotte, hon, former "Textile capital of the US" with 600 mills within a 50 mile radius.

Those banks are there because of tobacco and the mint, and a lenient attitude towards accounting tricks and money laundering.

But what is Charlotte really offering the world today?

by Anonymousreply 309/02/2012

That is it once had 600 miles within 50 miles. I don't know if there are any thereabouts anymore.

by Anonymousreply 409/02/2012

Isn't Charlotte the Civil War city where, upon the approach of the Northern troops, had the businessmen going "Here's the keys, come on in, don't burn it down."?

by Anonymousreply 509/02/2012

r3 I'm just telling you it's beautiful. I don't know what it has to offer the world. I like lush green and wooded area and Charlotte offers that. The home I was staying at looks like Hidden Valley. Quiet and idyllic. So green. So different from the cities I've grown up in.

by Anonymousreply 609/02/2012

New Orleans did that too, R5

by Anonymousreply 709/02/2012

It's rare for Catholics to have a foothold in the Catholic south as they do at Belmont Abbey

by Anonymousreply 809/03/2012

Oh calm up, OP. Don't let it get you up.

Michael Jordan has announced that the Charlotte Bobcats will be renamed the original Charlotte Hornets! The legendary Charlotte Hornets and team colors are back in the Queen City!

Bump for new interest in Charlotte

by Anonymousreply 1109/02/2014

Similarly, in Minneapolis "Uptown" is south of "Downtown". No wonder Ted Baxter lived there.

by Anonymousreply 1209/02/2014

Uptown and downtown only make sense in cities that have both, like New York.

by Anonymousreply 1309/02/2014

Is Charlotte one of the liberal North Carolina cities?

by Anonymousreply 1409/02/2014

It's less liberal than The Triangle area, but Charlotte like most major cities is liberal. It voted down the anti-gay marriage amendment and it voted for Obama. Go outside of the city limits and into the surburbs and you will be reminded you are in the south however.

It is a beautiful city, it used to be a boring for a "big" city but it has gotten more character recently.

by Anonymousreply 1509/02/2014

France did that too R5.

by Anonymousreply 1609/02/2014

Should I go there looking for an uptown girl?

by Anonymousreply 1709/02/2014

Was this because of that Harry Belafonte thing?

by Anonymousreply 1809/03/2014

But then, he comes uptown each evenin' to my tenement

Uptown where folks don't have to pay much rent

And when he's there with me, he can see that he's everything

Then he's tall, he don't crawl, he's a king

Downtown, he's just one of a million guys

He don't get no breaks and he takes all they got to give

'Cause he's got to live

But then, he comes uptown where he can hold his head up high Uptown, he knows that I'll be standing by And when I take his hand, there's no man who could put him down The world is sweet, it's at his feet when he's uptown Whoa Yeah, yeah, yeah

Charlotte is green and pretty, but other cities in North Carolina are more attractive, just not nearly as big.

CONS: Charlotte (population about 800,000) has grown rapidly in the last 50 years and has lost much of its charm. Some say it has lost its soul, too.

CONS: As a tourist city, Charlotte is primarily known for NASCAR headquarters and televangelist Billy Graham's boyhood home.

CONS: Charlotte has big city problems (crime, horrendous traffic) and few big city amenities (no mass transit, no world-class theater, ballet, symphony or opera).

CONS: There is no major university in the area. Davidson is well-regarded but it's too small to be much of an influence. There is a rather large branch of the state university system, but it's mediocre.

PROS: It has a large and busy airport, and it's not far to drive to the mountains or the beach. Some neighborhoods are quite attractive with history and charm. The restaurant scene is improving. And the natives can be friendly to you, especially if you look like a good Christian.

I'll be in Charlotte for a conference from Oct 29-31. Any recommendations? Yes, I have Google Maps, GayCities, etc. but I'd love local restaurant/bar favorites. NoDa? Downtown? A craft beer district would be a home run.

by Anonymousreply 2110/07/2014

Oh look, it's the "let's misuse the word pretentious" troll again.

by Anonymousreply 2210/07/2014

NoDa Brewery is by far the best brewery in Charlotte, check it out if you are a fan of craft beer. There is another craft brewery located right across from it, Birdsong I believe it is called, it's been a while.

Then head to Soul Gastrolounge for dinner.

Then have a nightcap at Bar 316.

They are all relatively close together and will give you the best taste of Charlotte night life.

I simply bumped an existing thread, bozo R22. Many thanks R23 for useful information.

by Anonymousreply 2410/07/2014

I meant the OP! Sorry,R24.

I see now the thread was started two years ago.

by Anonymousreply 2510/07/2014

Somebody asked for a Charlotte thread so I made one.

by Anonymousreply 2610/07/2014

I'm glad you did, R26. So, my coworkers (male, straight, cool) are in love with Solstice, Jack Beagles, Dog Bar. One also wants to go to Scarowinds. Do I hold fast for NoDa and Birdsong?

by Anonymousreply 2710/07/2014

The Queen City

by Anonymousreply 2810/08/2014

That seems like a good tour of Charlotte nightlife also R27 and if that is what your friends want to do might as well let them play host I supposed. It will make them happy.

by Anonymousreply 2910/08/2014

Cincinnati is a Queen City also.

by Anonymousreply 3010/09/2014

Mainers say "Down East."

by Anonymousreply 3110/09/2014

Uptown Charlotte

by Anonymousreply 3210/09/2014

I've also heard tell that they put on a sock and a shoe and a sock and a shoe, instead of a sock and a sock and a shoe and a shoe the way God intended.

by Anonymousreply 3310/09/2014

It's not a misuse of "pretentious." What is your damage, diction troll?

by Anonymousreply 3410/09/2014

Probably some penultimate dementia...

by Anonymousreply 3510/09/2014

What are they doing with all the cartel drug money they laundered? Shouldn't they have some cool stuff?

by Anonymousreply 3610/09/2014

I always root against the Carolina Panthers because of Cam Newton.

by Anonymousreply 3710/09/2014

whatever, r37

by Anonymousreply 3810/20/2014

R20: Charlotte is at least a 3 hour drive to the NC coastal beaches.

by Anonymousreply 4301/27/2015

CLT is closer to South Carolina beaches than the NC beaches.
