TCM -James Cagney all day. In his youth, he was one hot little stud !

The guy onscreen was tough, vulgar, sex on a (short) stick. He was like the human embodiment of a pittbull.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 4004/03/2013

And so intense - I love watching him act. If they're playing [italic]White Heat[/italic], check out how full on the performance is. And he was 50 years old when he did that one.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 108/14/2012

...and he was gay.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 208/14/2012

I think he actually WAS gay, or at least bi. Have heard some stories over the years. Watch him dance in West Point Story if you want the very definition of "light in the loafers." LOVED him!

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 308/14/2012

Please, the guy was not gay- he was a total homebody, and very conservative, in real life. Married to same woman like 50 years. Never heard hint of scandal - if you have, posit it here, with authentication.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 408/14/2012

Yeah, he had a sexy, tough quality about him, even though he wasn't traditionally handsome.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 508/14/2012

R4 = bossy bottom.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 608/14/2012

Well, here's one, r4.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 708/14/2012

Forgot the link.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 808/14/2012

Stop trying to make "short" happen, OP.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 908/14/2012

Can somebody explain these Public Enemy (the rap group, not the Cagney film) lyrics?
"Ask James Cagney / He beat up on a guy when he found he was a fagney / Cagney is a favorite / He is my boy / He don't jive around / He's a real McCoy."

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 1008/14/2012

Me too !

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 1208/14/2012

In the lyrics for Noel coward's "mad about the boy" he's the boy.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 1308/14/2012

Just a great star. An excellent dancer and an incredible dramatic performer. What R1 said is correct.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 1408/14/2012

I thought it was Tyrone Power, r14?

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 1508/14/2012

Excellent dancer, very quick and light, and was excellent in 1930s musicals, for which he never gets any critical respect because his tough-guy persona overshadowed the lighter side.

I read his autobiography years ago, not very interesting. No hints of The Gay, but then there wouldn't be. He seems to have been a nice guy who led a quiet life away from the camera. Married forever, apparently happily.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 1608/14/2012

I read it a while ago and a quick google finds this ref in a noel coward bio.

Early gay scene -

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 1808/14/2012

I guess that's pre-code stuff @ R19 because it's kind of blatant.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 2008/14/2012

Interesting - thanks, r18.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 2108/14/2012

Love him, especially his pre-code stuff. He's so hot in the 'Shanghai Lil' number from FOOTLIGHT PARADE.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 2208/15/2012

I DEMAND pictures of James Cagney showing his hole on Manhunt.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 2308/15/2012

Like him as an actor, can't stand his sway-backed, duck butt, slew-footed dancing.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 2408/15/2012

I could not drag myself to bed last night watching him in One, Two, Three. Even as a somewhat senior citizen, he exploded off the screen. The Wilder words were the fuse but he blew the bomb up real good.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 2508/15/2012

I found it. The story is from Mickey Rooney's autobio "Life is Too Short."

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 2708/15/2012

Yank My Doodle, It's A Dandy is a porn parody that actually maks an effort to follow the film it's satirizing. Watching a naked penis bounce during tapdancing is a highlight.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 2808/15/2012

I caught him yesterday in Each Dawn I die, and there's a great scene where his mother visits him in prison, and he pretends everything is swell for her benefit. Then, when it's time to go back, he gets up and starts walking down the hall to his cell--in about 12 steps he completely changes his face, his walk, and his body language as he goes from being the loving son to the tough con. It's an amazing transformation.

His co-star was George Raft, and I've never understood his appeal before watching that movie. The guy radiated charisma in every scene, and whenever he smiled I caught myself automatically smiling along with him.

James Cagney on What's My Line.

I think Jeremy Renner could play JC in a biography.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3008/16/2012

Woops, here's the link.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3108/16/2012

I've read the same as R14.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3208/17/2012

He was Cassavetes' favorite actor.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3308/17/2012

"Fagney"??!

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3408/17/2012

Yes, yes! James Cagney resembles Jeremy Renner, and if James Cagney was gay, then the similarity is complete. Jeremy Lee is adorably gay! And that is why he plays each role with such intensity that his gay is totally buried. But then, J R wants to play Steve McQueen who'd had so many girlfriends. I just wonder how Jeremy is going to do it.

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3503/04/2013

Test

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3603/04/2013

Doesn't he remind you of Jeremy Renner? They look so much alike!

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3704/03/2013
Love him, especially his pre-code stuff. He's so hot in the 'Shanghai Lil' number from FOOTLIGHT PARADE.

Ohmygawd. I love "Footlight Parade". It's such a dated freakshow of crazy implausibility, yet it is incredibly entertaining, and downright inspired in parts. Cagney is so incredibly watchable it's insane. Oh, and the doe-eyed Ruby Keeler to boot!

by Mae (my face still hurts from that grapefruit) Clarkereply 3804/03/2013
Actually, June Allyson was a senile old bag who did adult diaper commercials.

Not for her entire life, you dipshit.
