Summer Olympic Games of 2020

Didn't see a thread about this, but the three finalists were selected this May: Madrid, Tokyo, and Istanbul.

Where would you like to see them held?

by Anonymousreply 2907/01/2013

People just like it better that way.

A. I love R1.

B. Istanbul would be new and exciting; therefore, I think the games should be held there.

by Anonymousreply 207/08/2012

Istanbul would be a hot mess.

by Anonymousreply 307/08/2012

Istanbul would be great. Japan and Spain have already hosted Olympic Games.

by Anonymousreply 407/08/2012

It will be Istanbul. Assuming Turkey and Syria aren't at war.

by Anonymousreply 507/08/2012

The night events at a Tokyo Olympics could be lit by the light of their radioactive babies.

by Anonymousreply 607/08/2012

Tokyo may be at a disadvantage because the 2018 Winter Games are being held in Korea, but they would probably hold the most modern, efficient games of the three.

Istanbul would be the first games held in the Middle East and in a predominately Islamic country. So it has that going for it.

Madrid will be boiling in the summer and Spain is still in a financial mess. Easily the weekest of the three.

Why did Bloomberg give up?

by Anonymousreply 807/08/2012

[quote]Istanbul would be the first games held in the Middle East

Istanbul is in Europe.

by Anonymousreply 907/08/2012

First in a Muslim country.

by Anonymousreply 1007/08/2012

All three are overcrowded messes.

Istanbul, would put Turkey in the spotlight of Arab secularism. This may be a problem.

by Anonymousreply 1107/08/2012

Turks are not Arabs.

by Anonymousreply 1207/08/2012

OK, Moslem Secularism, then.

by Anonymousreply 1307/08/2012

Or Secularism in a Ottoman Moslem Country.

by Anonymousreply 1407/08/2012

Or Turkish Muslim.

by Anonymousreply 1507/08/2012

Well the ideal place would have been India, because there is no place on earth that is more in need of celebrating human fitness than India, which has probably a majority of the world's couch potatoes. Istanbul represent the Islamic Games, so they will get excited about that, but I chose it because I believe Istanbul will be almost destroyed by a mega-earthquake before then and will need the rebuilding momentum.

Also, FWIW, it's widely expected 2024 will go to Paris to mark the 100th anniversary of the last time they hosted the Games (the French announced plans for this after they lost 2012 to London.) So that would make it even more difficult for Madrid since that would mean 2 Western European games in a row.

by Anonymousreply 1707/08/2012

Paris should host the 2097 coincide with the 100th year anniversary since Diana's death.

by Anonymousreply 1807/08/2012

The whole selection process is a fraud.

by Anonymousreply 1907/08/2012

India hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 R16. Didn't change much.

by Anonymousreply 2007/08/2012

Tokyo looks like frontrunner going into the final stretch.

by Anonymousreply 2107/01/2013

So a homophobic, Islamist regime destroying open-minded traditions can wreak havoc with publicity and invite radicals to attack the games. Just what we all need.

Why not just award the games to Tehran?

by Anonymousreply 2207/01/2013

Istanbul would be really cool. It's a shame Turkey is such a mess right now because Istanbul is such a great city.

by Anonymousreply 2307/01/2013

NO WAY ISTANBUL. Probably Japan. They are so clean and organized, great transport system.

by Anonymousreply 2407/01/2013

Maybe they can solve the problem in Taksim Square by building a velodrome. No way is Istanbul getting it. Way too crowded already. Spain is broke- how the hell are they going to pay for it? It's Tokyo- get those tea ceremonies ready. Crowded but civil.

by Anonymousreply 2507/01/2013

The Radiation Olympics will win out!

by Anonymousreply 2607/01/2013

[quote]Istanbul is in Europe.

It depends on which section of the city that you're in. Only part of Istanbul is in Europe.

I've enjoyed visits to Istanbul but with the current group running the country, you can be sure that Istanbul won't get the 2020 games.

Madrid is probably paying the people in Taksim Square!
