Meryl Streep's miscasting in SOPHIE'S CHOICE

HAH! I bet you didn't expect that for a thread title.

I would have cast:

Morgan Fairchild

Jaclyn Smith

Morgan Brittany

Dee Wallace

Karen Valentine

Catherine Oxenberg

Heather Locklear

Pamela Bellwood

Bonnie Franklin

Victoria Principal

Cheryl Tiegs

by Anonymousreply 7510/14/2012

All great choices, OP

by Anonymousreply 104/17/2012

OP's post reminds me of an interview I read in the '90s with Marilu Henner. At one point in it, she expressed some resentment about Meryl Streep's career, and frustration in feeling that Hollywood's eagerness to always cast Meryl had denied her and other actresses opportunities.

I couldn't believe Marilu was deluded enough to think that, if Meryl Streep didn't exist, Marilu would have been considered for any of those roles. But judging from OP's taste, it sounds like if he were directing SOPHIE'S CHOICE Marilu could have been a front-runner!

by Anonymousreply 204/17/2012

I think I was writing about you in the "The Young are Awful" thread.

by Anonymousreply 304/17/2012

Op is joking, right?

by Anonymousreply 404/17/2012

Charlene Tilton optioned Sophie's Choice but her then manager bf Jon somebody or other, lost it and Streep was cast.

by Anonymousreply 504/17/2012

Auschwitz doesn't go for FOOD and... FOOD! Now get outta my way-- I got a Nazi waiting for me!

by Anonymousreply 604/17/2012

I've tried to sit through this several times and never made it. The performances are saccharine. Yeah, she mastered another accent- so what?

by Anonymousreply 704/17/2012

Bonnie Franklin as Sophie...funniest thing I've read in a long, long time. Thank God for DataLounge, otherwise I wouldn't even remember her...

by Anonymousreply 804/17/2012

Actually, despite OP's sarcastic post, Meryl was merely a technician in the role of Sophie, no soul whatsoever. I know Sophie was damaged by her 'choice', but, again, Meryl was souless. This was a part made for: LIV ULLMANN! She had the look, the acting chops and more importantly the PATHOS needed for this melancholy role.

by Anonymousreply 904/17/2012

[quote]Bonnie Franklin as Sophie

DAMMIT, Nathan! DAMMIT, Stingo! DAMMIT, Wehrmacht!

by Anonymousreply 1004/17/2012

I hate to choose between my children for the gas chambers, but I love to tap!

by Anonymousreply 1104/17/2012

If the film had been made twenty years earlier, Ingrid Bergman would have nailed it. But I think Bette Davis also would have been brilliant and nailed the terror and guilt that Sophie had. Danny Kaye would have been great in the Kevin Kline role.

FYI, Goldie Hawn met with Alan Pakula and fell to her knees proclaiming that she HAD to do this movie. It didn't work, but Hawn would have been an interesting choice. Marthe Keller was apparently second choice after Streep.

by Anonymousreply 1204/17/2012

[quote]Yeah, she mastered another accent- so what?

Not just another accent: she mastered two other languages for the role. Much of her dialogue was in flawless* German and Polish.

*Well, 99%. There's one line reading in German where you can tell she doesn't totally get the nuance of what she's saying, but it's a very minor blunder.

[quote] This was a part made for: LIV ULLMANN!

Or Hanna Schygulla.

by Anonymousreply 1304/17/2012

I would have most definitely gone with Pamela Bellwood if Joyce Dewitt was unavailable.

by Anonymousreply 1404/17/2012

Sorry, I meant thirty-thirty five years earlier

by Anonymousreply 1504/17/2012

Thanks for mentioning Morgan Brittany. I thought she was just a bad dream.

by Anonymousreply 1604/17/2012

Deidre Hall.

by Anonymousreply 1704/17/2012

What? No one has mentioned Judith Light? She'd kill in that role.

by Anonymousreply 1804/17/2012

Carol Channing...!!!

The role of Sophie would be absolutely perfect for Carol Channing!

Besides,...they would love her in the regions!

by Anonymousreply 1904/17/2012

Linda Evans.

by Anonymousreply 2004/17/2012

Why not Miss Streisand?

by Anonymousreply 2104/17/2012

Slightly off-topic: does anyone else remember an episode of "thirtysomething" where they were making up lyrics to movies that shouldn't have theme songs? There was one for Sophie's Choice, and it was something remotely like, "You won't get much sleep tonight, 'cause in the morning you'll be making... Sophie's Choice." I haven't seen it since in was on about 20 years ago, but I remember really laughing.

by Anonymousreply 2204/17/2012

I would've cast:

Paulina Porizkova

Justine Bateman

Phoebe Cates

by Anonymousreply 2304/17/2012

Actually, R18, she might. Judith Light is an excellent actress.

by Anonymousreply 2404/17/2012

Paulina and Justine would have been about 15. Phoebe maybe 18.

by Anonymousreply 2504/17/2012

Mary Tyler Moore

by Anonymousreply 2604/17/2012

Jill Clayburgh.

by Anonymousreply 2704/17/2012

Marla Gibbs.

by Anonymousreply 2804/17/2012

Shirley Hemphill would have been ideal.

by Anonymousreply 2910/12/2012

by Anonymousreply 3010/12/2012

Meryl Streep should've been aborted.

by Anonymousreply 3110/12/2012

Dee Wallace is a good actress and should have been nominated for "Cujo".

by Anonymousreply 3210/12/2012

Sandy Duncan

Lola Falana

Ruta Lee

Jo Ann Pflug

Lauren Tewes

by Anonymousreply 3310/12/2012

Miss Jo Anne Worley!

by Anonymousreply 3410/12/2012

Rhonda Bates

Teresa Ganzel

Mitzi Gaynor

Arlene Golonka

Judy Norton-Taylor

Fran Ryan

by Anonymousreply 3510/12/2012

Patty Duke

by Anonymousreply 3610/12/2012

OP, you should have said "The French Lieutenant's Woman" - she was hideously miscast in that.

by Anonymousreply 3710/12/2012

Judy and Audrey Landers. Judy to do the latter-day Sophie with Stingo, and Audrey to do the acting heavy-lifting in all the flashbacks.

by Anonymousreply 3810/12/2012

Ah, so this is why Morgan Brittany keeps complaining that her right wing views lost her work. Clearly, she was unfairly passed over for Sophie's Choice in favor of that no talent liberal bitch.

by Anonymousreply 3910/12/2012

interesting r2....I remember Kate Capshaw saying pretty much the same thing and complaining that she couldn't maintain a "major" career because she had too many children (yet M had 4 kids so go figa)

by Anonymousreply 4010/12/2012

Charles Nelson Reilly

by Anonymousreply 4110/12/2012

Kate Capshaw couldn't maintain a "major" career because too many people saw Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

by Anonymousreply 4210/12/2012

Who ELSE do you have to fuck in this town to get a job?

by Anonymousreply 4310/12/2012

R18 R24 Judith Light would have been a good choice. FYI -Judith Light and Meryl Streep are the same age,(b.1949) and both from affluent areas of New Jersey.

by Anonymousreply 4410/12/2012

Cynthia Gibb

by Anonymousreply 4510/12/2012

I could actually believe Streep and Judith Light as sisters. Streep would be the less-attractive one, always jealous of her sister, though.

by Anonymousreply 4610/13/2012

Diana Canova

Didi Conn

Debralee Scott

by Anonymousreply 4710/13/2012

This thread is LOL funny!

by Anonymousreply 4810/13/2012

Tisa Farrow

Jaye P. Morgan

Chesty Morgan

And me, Joy Harmon

by Anonymousreply 4910/13/2012

Esther Rolle

by Anonymousreply 5010/13/2012

I was more impressed with the kid in Cujo, r32, Danny Pintauro. He was only 6 but was completely believable in a fairly difficult role. Later he was on Who's The Boss and eventually came out as gay.

by Anonymousreply 5110/13/2012

Over 50 posts, and no mention of Melissa Gilbert? Missy would have *killed*.

by Anonymousreply 5210/13/2012

Cillian Murphy

by Anonymousreply 5310/13/2012

Heidi Bohay

by Anonymousreply 5410/13/2012

That talented red-head who played Laura Avery Sumner on Knots Landing. I'm blanking on her name at the moment.

by Anonymousreply 5510/13/2012

obviously I don't know if this is true or not but the story is Striesand so wanted to play Sophie that she offered to do it for free.

I know.. I know..

by Anonymousreply 5610/13/2012

Tahnee Welch would have been an ideal Sophie Zawistowska.

by Anonymousreply 5710/13/2012

by Anonymousreply 5810/13/2012

Frank Sinatra wanted Lucille Ball to play Sophie, but she rejected the part because she didn't think her fans would accept her in such as serious role.

by Anonymousreply 5910/13/2012

Karen Black!

by Anonymousreply 6010/13/2012

Best thread ever, and every single suggestion is an EXCELLENT choice.

by Anonymousreply 6110/13/2012

Erin Moran!

by Anonymousreply 6210/13/2012

Janet Jones as Sophie

Richard Greico as Nathan

Steven Segal as Stingo

and introducing Kim Richards as Leslie Lapidus

by Anonymousreply 6310/13/2012

Diahann Carroll

Pat Carroll

Carol Wayne

Carole Bayer Sager

by Anonymousreply 6410/13/2012

Kathryn Morris from COLD CASE

by Anonymousreply 6510/13/2012

While we're at it with the absurd choices, why not that well known stellar thespian, Madonna?!

by Anonymousreply 6610/13/2012

Conchata Ferrell

Geri Jewell

Loni Love

Markie Post

by Anonymousreply 6710/13/2012

Meryl was supposed to portray a woman who was gorgeous. I had read the book prior to seeing the movie and was stunned by the casting.

Meryl isn't ugly but she's no beauty.

by Anonymousreply 6810/13/2012

Jill St. John as Sophie

Dean Martin As Nathan

Frank Sinatra as Stingo

by Anonymousreply 6910/13/2012

The film feels dated to the point of being unwatchable. Maybe someone can do a good film based on the book.

by Anonymousreply 7010/13/2012

Oh...! You are [italic][bold]SOOOOOO[/bold][/italic] right...!!!

by Anonymousreply 7110/13/2012

Should have been Madame.

by Anonymousreply 7210/13/2012

Too bad Beulah Bondi was dead, because she would have been the definitive Sophie.

by Anonymousreply 7310/13/2012

Ethel Merman

by Anonymousreply 7410/14/2012

The only actress in the last 50 years with the chops to play Sophie....PIA ZADORA!
