James Dean: Great face, image, and myth, but an obnoxious and overrated actor. Not a very good actor at all. Sure he had some charisma, but his cheesy angst seems rather affected and embarrassing. It's not so much that it's dated, it's fake for the 1950's, too. I just can't take him very seriously. Same thing with early Marlon Brando(who was a better actor).

Priestly is nothing. Dean had something special, which is why he became an icon. And he WAS a good actor; if he'd lived he'd have gone on to do more good work. But he was so mentally ill; it was all part of his charm I guess, like it was with Marilyn Monroe.
|by Christian||reply 51||11/27/2012|
I have NEVER seen a thread light up with so much yellow in my life! You must be quite a fan...
|by Christian||reply 52||11/27/2012|
No question! James Dean!
|by Christian||reply 53||11/27/2012|
There is a tv playhouse that James Dean did that showed me how great of an actor he truly was. A complete departure from the 3 movies. The show or mini movie was cheesy but he would have gone far. Before the criticism people should see everything he tried to do.
To me Jason was a poor imitation.
|by Christian||reply 54||11/27/2012|
This thread of course leads us into another question: "Elizabeth Taylor or Lindsay Lohan?"
|by Christian||reply 55||11/27/2012|
This obviously was not meant to be a James Dean tribute thread, but some Cakeboy (apparently oblivious to the reference in OP's original post?) has taken that idea and run with it.
|by Christian||reply 56||11/27/2012|
r6 pretty much nailed it. I was obsessed with Dean when I was in my early 20s, but it wore off to the point that now I can't even remember why I was so into him. I suppose the angst appealed to me and I liked to think I could pull it off as well as he could.
I couldn't, of course.
He always looked much, much better to me in photographs than he did in his few movies, though.
|by Christian||reply 57||11/27/2012|
Lol R52, i like a lot of actors and actresses. Dean is not my favourite but as a personality he seemed enigmatic, troubled, and stubborn...so i wanted to make something out of him. :) I also find him very attractive, he didn't have a conventional beauty.
R56 aka Murray you hurt me a bit but you are entitled to your own opinion.
|by Christian||reply 58||11/28/2012|
r58, if you are the one who has turned the thread into a James Dean shrine, then my comment was directed to you. But it wasn't meant to be hurtful.
Rather I was trying to point out that I don't think you grasped what the OP was doing, and I tried to word and sign my response in a way that indicates I do.
Could you be any more Clueless? (again that's intended to to along with the OP theme, not meant to be a direct insult)
|by Christian||reply 59||11/28/2012|
R59, no worries about my intelligence. I read what OP asked, it's just there is not another thread yet that is named exclusively James Dean, so i had to make some room for him. I deliberately, didn't pay attention to OP's dilemma, 'James Dean or Jason Priestley?' because i found this thought illogical. A comparison between Dean and Priestley is simply impossible, they are so different, the roles they played are completely different as well.
You were clueless about my intentions which were pure and good. Maybe you sleep with the OP? Nice try...
|by Christian||reply 60||11/28/2012|
Marlon Brando, way hotter then both. Too bad I was not alive to appreciate it back then.
|by Christian||reply 61||11/28/2012|
Yes i agree, Brando was hotter and more beautiful than Jimmy. That goes without question. Jimmy had his charm though.
|by Christian||reply 62||11/28/2012|
|by Christian||reply 63||11/28/2012|
Brando and Jimmy were both hot. I mean Brando was hotter, yes. But, James is in the top few of the hottie from back then.
Brando Hudson Newman Clift Grant Dean
Not in any particular order but I wouldn't kick any of them out of bed. The lot of them were more talented, charasmatic and good looking than most of what passed for hot today.

|by Christian||reply 68||11/28/2012|
Because people know that the jacket was much more Priestley than Dean, R68. But it was far cooler to say it looked like something Dean would wear, and Cher didn't want to insult Christian, so of course she went with James Dean.
|by Christian||reply 69||11/28/2012|
*Holds hands up and backs away* Ok then.
|by Christian||reply 70||11/28/2012|

Dean was a phenomenal actor in his day and a good looking guy. Priestly had the looks, but his acting was fairly wooden. Dean is now dead, and so is Priestly's unfortunate career. Dean was before my time but he exuded such energy. Priestly was dull as dishwater. That aside, I would have bent Priestly over in a heartbeat.

|by Christian||reply 94||12/28/2012|
“In retrospect it seems to me that I felt by being around him something was about to happen or was already happening, but I just wasn’t smart enough to get it. He was fascinating to be with and watch. There was the way he moved. He could lift a glass of water to his mouth with an intensity and grace that made it seem he had never before touched a glass, never carried that particular weight through the air. What he said wasn’t especially smart or memorable; it was the way he said it that made it interesting, the delivery and the hand gestures. I never felt like I was a disciple and should take notes because they would be valuable someday. Nor did I realize that I was lucky to be his friend until years later when he became a legend.” -Joe Hyams (from James Dean: Little Boy Lost)

One of James Dean's favourite books was 'Death in the Afternoon' by Ernest Hemingway. He was very impressed by this book and he liked to talk about it.
His favourite poet was James Whitecomb Riley.
I also know that one of the books he read was 'Matador' by Barnaby Conrad. John Gilmore, one of Dean's friends lend James 'Matador' because Dean liked the subject of the book. It had to do with bullfighting and James loved anything that had to do with matadors. I forgot to mention that 'Death in the Afternoon' was also about bullfighting!

Capote called Brando a coward because he wouldn't take the calls when Dean called him over and over. Apparently they had had a fling and Brando thought Dean was going overboard in an embarrassing way.
Recall the famous photo of Dean serving as Brando's footstool? Can't find it on line - I don't think anyone posted it here. Brando was open about not liking Dean's subservience and copying him. Rather like Nicholson dealing with Christian Slater, who even had cosmetic surgery to look more Nicholson-like.
Anyway, it's not like Brando wasn't an avid homosexualist. His disappearing with Burt Lancaster to get his brains fucked out is well documented. Although, to balance things, the night he spent with Bette Davis sucking on her breast apparently was one of the highlights of her life.

Well, R146, i found this photo in The Rock Hudson Project.
The Rock Hudson Project is an online archive of any media related to classic Hollywood film star Rock Hudson and a non-profit website. This includes vintage photos, video clips, magazine and newspaper articles. There is also a FB page about him there...
Why someone to post a fake photo if they really are fans, it doesn't make sense. So to answer your previous question R146, i believe that this photo is real, that there is Rock Hudson and James Dean in the background. However, i must admit i found it a bit strange that this photo is so goddamn blurry. Maybe it was badly taken.
Below i sent you a link of the same site with more photos of Rock Hudson, James Dean, and ELIZABETH from the set of The Giant. You can also search this site with this link.

Geraldine Page remembers Dean’s “tremendous intensity and curiosity about people—always fascinated by everything around him. Most people would be frightened by this kind of intensity. He made people look at themselves and not like what they saw. Unless you kind of welcomed that look at yourself, because it gave you a chance to reassess yourself, Jimmy was a very uncomfortable person to be around."

"What the hell would she have in common with a poor farm boy? If it weren’t that I was up there on the screen, her and people like her wouldn’t give me the time of day" -James Dean about Ursula Andress
|by Christian||reply 159||07/26/2013|
“Sometimes he would pick me up on his motorcycle at Marlon Brando’s. Marlon was engaged to Josianne and I would visit her there, and we would practice English together. But Marlon was very strange toward Jimmy, and very upset when he would arrive. Marlon would ask me, “What are you doing with this boy? Why do you go out with him?” -Ursula Andress
|by Christian||reply 160||07/26/2013|
"We fight like cats and dogs—no, on second thought, like two monsters. But then we make up and it’s fun. Ursula doesn’t take any baloney from me, I don’t take any baloney from her. I guess it’s because we are both egotistical."
|by Christian||reply 161||07/26/2013|
”Maybe he used his sometimes perverted humor to hide a sense of morality that most people would misunderstand. Jimmy had a high sense of morality- high in the sense that there was no pressure coming from anywhere. It was all inner, but it was very strong.”
|by Christian||reply 162||07/26/2013|
Weird that Marlon would give a fuck as to who Ursula was going out with then. Maybe jealous of Jimmy or Ursula?.
I know it's shopped but I still think this might have happened a time or two after a little partying.
|by Christian||reply 163||07/26/2013|
"Jimmy said that he felt like a caged animal because of his contract with the studio, and he said he was willing to give up everything to go to Europe and feel free. He wanted life and love and not only a career. Although he was a very aggressive, ambitious actor, he was very sensitive, with beautiful feelings." -Ursula Andress
|by Christian||reply 164||07/26/2013|
Well to be honest, i think Marlon was a bit jealous of Jimmy. She knew that Jimmy idolized him but i think that deep inside him he was afraid that Jimmy could surpass him.
Of course, that's only my opinion. Not necessarily the truth.
|by Christian||reply 165||07/26/2013|
I think James could have been evolved into a beautiful person. He grew up in a family(uncle, aunt,little cousin) who was there for him even when his father was absent.
Marlon had not that stability with his family. His alcoholic mother could disappear from home for days and many times Marlon was looking after her at nights. His father was absent and away on business most of the time and he was a relentless womanizer. Marlon admired his mother artistic nature and he loved her a lot but wounds are wounds...so i guess a kind of bitterness and emotional unavailability always shadowed his relationship with most people and especially his relationships with women. He was doomed to make flagrant mistakes because he was a very strong and stubborn person and each time it was getting worse.
|by Christian||reply 166||07/26/2013|
I think that Jimmy needed Elizabeth's interest and luckily he had it. She liked him a lot and she felt a kind of strong affection for him.
|by Christian||reply 167||07/26/2013|
Noreen Nash, one of Dean's co-stars on Giant, recalled that the stars Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson had a bet over who bed him first. According to Nash, Hudson won the bet just a few days into the shoot.
|by Christian||reply 168||07/26/2013|
Lol R168, i have read that too. Well, maybe it is true, i don't know.
I can't explain why a person like James could be abusive to his girlfriends at times, especially when he was drunk... One reason was maybe his latent homosexuality.
I think he was certainly bisexual. He was attracted to men as well, undoubtedly! He slept with a couple of them. He didn't sleep only with men who could advance his career, he had also slept with some of his friends. So...you got my point, anyway!
|by Christian||reply 169||07/26/2013|

Film composer Leonard Rosenman was one of Dean's friends. Rosenman composed the scores 'East of Eden' and for 'Rebel Without a Cause'.

He was more photogenic than Brando. Brando was more beautiful, but Dean is more interesting to the eye, more poetic, more of an artist.
However....we don't know how he would end up if he managed to get old. Maybe he would become fat like Marlon...who knows? Marlon got fat at a very young age. Only in his 4 first movies he was really fit and an absolute peach. In his fifth movie, 'The Wild One', he began to put on weight.
However, as a human being Dean(at least at the beginning of his career) was stingy with money, unlike Brando. Brando from the beginning was willing to give his friends money when they were in a difficult position unlike Dean.

It's obvious neither of them were good drivers.

I saw Giant two weeks ago. I could not stand James Dean. What a ham and poseur.
|by Christian||reply 184||09/27/2013|
He was a poser but he was actually a good actor and he had star quality.
|by Christian||reply 185||09/27/2013|
His acting has not aged well (very staged and overwrought - bordering on camp), but his style and offbeat looks are iconic.

He looks good on postcards and posters. Is acting has not aged well.

“There were times when I was in his dressing room and he’d tell me, ‘I dont feel like talking, but stay anyway.’ I would sit there and read while he listened to music and played his bongo drums.”
Faye Nuell, Natalie Wood’s double in Rebel
"For many, a relationship with Jimmy was complex, even obsessive. For him it was simple and probably much less important. He was intensely determined not to be loved or love. He could be absorbed, fascinated, attracted by things new or beautiful, but he would never surrender himself. There were girls convinced they were the only ones in his life (often at the same time, there were so many people and things in his life at the same time), when they were no more than occasions."
-Nicholas Ray, director of Rebel Without A Cause

“I don’t think people should be subservient to movie idols. And I do not idolize Marlon Brando. Brando! If I imitate him subconsciously, I don’t know about it. If I do it consciously, I’d be a fool to admit it. I would like to be a star in my own sense. I mean to be a very consummate actor, to have more difficult roles and fill them to my satisfaction. But not to be a star on the basis of gold plating. A real star carries its own illumination, an inward brightness.” —James Dean

James Dean had a fear of flying, so he always slept when on an airplane.

Every day Jimmy threw himself hungrily upon the world like a starving animal that suddenly finds a scrap of food. The intensity of his desires and fears could make the search at times arrogant, egocentric; but behind it was such a desperate vulnerability that one was moved, even frightened.

“He was very afraid of being hurt. He was afraid of opening up in case it was turned around and used against him.” -Elizabeth Taylor
“He didn’t show you very much. He’d challenge you to find him. Then when you’d found him, he’d still make you guess. It was an endless game with him. The thing people missed about Jimmy was his mischievousness. He was the most constantly mischievous person I think I’ve ever met. Full of tricks, full of magic, full of outrageousness.” - Stewart Stern
“He wanted me to love him unconditionally, but Jimmy was not able to love someone else in return … it was the troubled boy that wanted to be loved very badly. I loved Jimmy as I have loved no one else in my life, but I could not give him the enormous amount that he needed. Loving Jimmy was something that could empty a person.”-Pier Angeli on James Dean
