Betty Davis

Moved to NYC at age 16 to study at FIT. Became a model and uptown scenester. Married Miles Davis at the ripe old age of 23. Introduced Miles to Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, becoming the inspiration and muse behind his groundbreaking Bitches Brew.

Funk Visionary and all around Strong Black Woman. Censured by the NAACP for being too raunchy. Kicked off Island records for being too "uncommercial".

And, she wrote what could have been some DL anthems. "If I'm in luck, I'll get picked up", "Don't call her a tramp", "Whory Angel".

WHET? Retired to PA to raise a family in the late '70s.

Reminisces? Stories? Appreciations?

I love this bad ass.

We are not amused.

There's a convenience store/barbecue joint in northern Mississippi called the Betty Davis Grocery.

by Anonymousreply 203/05/2012

I LOVE Betty Davis, OP, "badass" is right! She is truly fierce, in every sense of that word.

by Anonymousreply 303/05/2012

Bette Davis. Not "Betty."

by Anonymousreply 403/05/2012

Hey asshole at r4 . Read the fucking post.

by Anonymousreply 503/05/2012

I love how smart R4 thinks she is. Too bad she's just OLD.

by Anonymousreply 603/05/2012

I fucking love her raunchy blackness.

by Anonymousreply 703/05/2012

OP, thanks so much for posting. I had never heard of her, but am now obsessed.

by Anonymousreply 803/05/2012

LOVE Betty and Millie Jackson. They make Tina Turner at her raunchiest sound like Kristin Chenoweth.

by Anonymousreply 903/05/2012

Best. Album. Cover. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 1003/05/2012

Your Mama Wants Ya Back.

And it's Mar-LENE DEE-TRITCH, not Mar-LAY-na Dee-TRICK.

by Anonymousreply 1203/05/2012

Charming. Hot body, though, I'll give her that.

by Anonymousreply 1303/05/2012

r12 = Leo Lermann's fat bearded corpse.

by Anonymousreply 1403/05/2012

Is she Unsung?

by Anonymousreply 1503/05/2012

Love her, OP. Thanks for starting this. She was very influential, musically, but gets little credit.

by Anonymousreply 1603/05/2012

She was way ahead of her time.

by Anonymousreply 1711/09/2013

I loved her outtakes for Now Voyager where she fingers herself while on the cruise ship.
