Someone mentioned this in the Psycho thread. I would be so excited to see a remake of this movie.

Michael Fassbender as Mr. De Winter...

Matt Bomer as Addison Dewitt!

Kathy Batesis as far from Mrs. Danvers as I can imagine--just because she played a psychotic Frau in "Misery," doesn't meanshe'd be right for Danny.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||03/02/2012|
Blake Lively as Jennifer De Winter
|by Anonymous||reply 4||03/02/2012|
Jennifer Jason Leigh looked sublime as Mrs. Danvers in the Vanity Fair shoot a few years ago. Made me want to see her play a creepy Danvers-style villainess and get her long-overdue Oscar nod!
|by Anonymous||reply 5||03/02/2012|
Addison DeWitt isn't in this one R2, sweetie but he'd be great as the sleazy cousin Jack Favell.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||03/02/2012|
Okay R3 what about Dame Helen Mirren?
|by Anonymous||reply 7||03/02/2012|
Yes she would be great R5, she was so creepy in Single White Female.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||03/02/2012|
I want to see Jason Statham as Mr. De Winter jumping up, trying to reach the door knobs.
"Be there… in a minute…. my love."

Tilda Swinton as Mrs. Danvers
Carey Mulligan as the second Mrs. de Winter
Jon Hamm as Maxim de Winter
|by Anonymous||reply 10||03/02/2012|
Rose Byrne as the second Mrs. The lady who plays O'Brien on Downton Abbey as Danvers.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||03/02/2012|
Rooney Mara as Mrs. Sanders.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||03/02/2012|
Great choices R10!
|by Anonymous||reply 13||03/02/2012|
Meryl Streep as Mrs. Danvers.
Agree with Jon Hamm as Maxim.
Anne Heche as the first Mrs. De Winter.
Rooney Mara as the second wife.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||03/02/2012|
Colin Firth OR Kenneth Branaugh as Maxim
Kathleen Turner as Mrs. Danvers
Matthew Perry as the George Sanders cousin character
can't think of a good second Mrs. De Winter.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||03/02/2012|
Ten years younger and Jennifer Connelly could be MDW II.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||03/02/2012|
Mrs Danvers is younger than has been suggested. How about Janet McTeer?
|by Anonymous||reply 17||03/02/2012|
Cate Blanchett for Danvers
|by Anonymous||reply 18||03/02/2012|
Mia Wachakowski (sp?) as the second Mrs. DeWinter.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||03/02/2012|
Jessica Chastain as the second Mrs. de Winter
Liev Schreiber as Maxim
Cherry Jones as Mrs. Danvers
James Purefoy as Jack
|by Anonymous||reply 20||03/02/2012|
Or Carey Mulligan as the second Mrs. DeWinter. Thing young, people!
|by Anonymous||reply 21||03/02/2012|
Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Danvers (grow up Nicole!) Colin Firth as Maxim an insightfully picked unknown for the second Mrs. De Winter
|by Anonymous||reply 22||03/02/2012|
Let's talk about ages. IMHO the second Mrs. DeWinter should be quite young, under twenty-five. Young enough to assume everything wrong is her fault, and young enough to take people at face value. It's why I suggested Wasikowski (sp?), her age.
Mr. DeWinter should be considerably older, of course, but probably younger than Colin Firth. Forty, but not fifty, and with a nasty dark side carefully hidden under his upper-class repression. Could Tom Hardy do it?
Mrs. Danvers could be any age between thirty and seventy.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||03/02/2012|
I think Mrs. Danvers should still be at an age where lust still plays a part.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||03/02/2012|
The Second Mrs. de Winter: Romola Garai
Maxim de Winter: Clive Owen
Mrs. Danvers: Gillian Anderson
Jack Favell: Colin Farrell
Mrs. van Hopper: Glenn Close
|by Anonymous||reply 25||03/02/2012|
Not Hamm, he's too goofy. Fassbender. You need someone broody.
Agree with Mulligan and Swinton though.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||03/02/2012|
oooo Swinton would be cool
|by Anonymous||reply 27||03/02/2012|
Mrs Danvers has my name written all over it.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||03/02/2012|
Ooh, I like some of these ideas!
Second Jessica Chastain as the Second Mrs. DeWinter
Second Clive Owen as Max De Winter, although he's already a little old. Second Choice: Fassbender, although I don't think he's dashing enough. Ioan Griffudd?
Second James Purefoy as Jack or Colin Farrell
Mrs D? Cherry Jones would be awesome, but isn't really the look. Jennifer Jason-Leigh can't act. Tilda Swinton sounds good.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||03/02/2012|
Siobhan Finneran as Mrs. Danvers
Sophie McShera as the Second Mrs. de Winter
Rob James-Collier as Maxim de Winter
|by Anonymous||reply 30||03/03/2012|
Jennifer Jason Leigh certainly can act and she would make a delicious Mrs. Danvers.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||03/03/2012|
Elias Koteas as Maximum Bulge de Winter!
|by Anonymous||reply 32||03/03/2012|
I'd love to see Hollywood today cast it:
"I" de Winter: Reese Witherspoon
Maxim: Zac Efron
Mrs. Danvers: Tyler Perry in drag
Jack Favell: Russell Brand
Mrs. van Hopper: Beyonce
|by Anonymous||reply 33||03/03/2012|
Julianne Moore. Seriously.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||03/03/2012|
Either Kate Nelligan or Cherry Jones as Mrs. Danvers.
A sober Joaquin Phoenix as Maxim.
Lily Rabe as the first Mrs. De Winter.
Jennifer Lawrence as the second wife.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||03/03/2012|
Maxim: Jake Gyllenhaal
Rebecca: Reese Witherspoon
Mrs. DeWinter: Kristen Stewart
Mrs. Danvers: Angelina Jolie
|by Anonymous||reply 36||03/03/2012|
Agree with Tilda as Danvers; my first thought.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||03/03/2012|
t/j on Swinton; has anyone seen "We Need to Talk about Kevin'"?
|by Anonymous||reply 38||03/03/2012|
Kathleen Turner caould play Manderley.
What about. Glennie as Danvers? Not the ego of Norma adesmond, but the fatal qualities she brought to Alex with the cold mater.nal of Jenny in Garp.

When Rebecca was made in 1940:
Laurence Olivier was 33
Joan Fontaine was 23
Judith Anderson was 43
|by Anonymous||reply 41||03/03/2012|
Casting is horrendous now. It reminds me of "Mulholland Drive", where people get picked for roles not by talent or appeal, but by some secret dark force. I don't know Emma from Emily.
And what is it with the fear of the showing the body? I'm 110% gay, but even I like to see bimbos romping on the beach in bikinis. Some kind of weird puritanism going on in Gollyweird.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||03/03/2012|
I don't think Cherry has the hauteur for Danvers. Janet McTeer has it in spades. I agree Jessica Chastain for second Mrs. D. First Mrs. D - Blanchett. Maxim - Jon Hamm is a good choice.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||03/03/2012|
Dame Edna as Mrs. Dangers.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||03/03/2012|
Cherry Jones is a very fine actress who is also an out Lesbian, so she therefore already has the hauteur needed for Mrs. Danvers. There is a certain subtext to Mrs. Danvers, R43.
With that being said. Kate Nelligan could play that part very well. She would chew the scenery, the cast, and the crew, and just spit it all out at the feet of the audience itself chillingly. WEHT her, by the way? Is she ill or retired?
|by Anonymous||reply 45||03/03/2012|
Tom Cruise as Maxim
Nicole Kidman as the first Mrs de Winter
Katie Holmes as the second Mrs. de Winter
Mimi Rogers as Mrs Danvers

WTF does this possibly have to do with "Rebecca"? Are you saying you want to see a production with Mrs. Danvers in a bikini, and Max in a Borat-like chartreuse body thong?
|by Anonymous||reply 47||03/03/2012|
I want to see Elias Koteas playing Maxim de Winter in a chartreuse body thong, heavily bulging at the crotch with the weight of his swarthy beer can dick and fat hairy Greek bullnuts.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||03/03/2012|
Some of you are hideous at casting.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||03/03/2012|
Many of the casting suggestions make it perfectly clear why this movie doesn't need to be remade.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||03/03/2012|
Before you seriously suggest an American actor, please take the time to find out whether they've ever done a convincing English accent. Most young American actors are not trained in accents, and make fools of themselves when they try to play historical upper class roles.
Has Jessica Chastain ever shown she can do Brit english?
Well, Tilda Swinton can. And she can scare mousy young women into seriously considering suicide. She'd be ideal.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||03/03/2012|
Why not a black woman as Mrs. Danvers, like Angela Bassett or Viola Davis?
|by Anonymous||reply 52||03/03/2012|
I could see any of Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, or Amanda Seyfried as the second Mrs. DeWinter. But maybe that's just me.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||03/03/2012|
Gillian Anderson as Mrs Danvers was a brilliant suggestion.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||03/03/2012|
John Travolta as Dangers.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||03/03/2012|
I thought the cast with Charles Dance, Emilia Fox and Diana Rigg caught their psychic ages best.
Dance was 50 (but played 42)
Fox was 24 (and played 21)
Rigg was 59 (and played a woman with only a sad memory of lust and Rebecca...)
|by Anonymous||reply 56||03/03/2012|
[quote]Has Jessica Chastain ever shown she can do Brit english? Well, Tilda Swinton can.
She cheats. She's actually a Brit.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||03/04/2012|
God I want another version of Rebecca so badly.
Mrs Danvers: I agree with Tilda Swinton, or Helen Mirren.
Maxim: I always thought Christian Bale but he doesn't seem charming and 'gentle' enough if that makes sense. Perhaps Michael Fassbender.
Mrs DeWinter: Carey Mulligan or a complete unknown. I can't think of anyone besides Carey right now who would be able to do the role justice.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||03/04/2012|
Since someone mentioned Helen Mirren:
Ten years ago, Eleanor Bron would have made a great Mrs. Danvers. She has the perfect gothic look, but she's nearly 80 now and probably would be a little too old for the part. Her portrayal of Miss Minchin in A Little Princess reminded me of Danvers.
Eileen Atkins could probably do it too, but again, nearly 80.
Cate Blanchett is the same age (43) that Judith Anderson was in the 1940 film.
Anna Chancellor's another one that has the perfect gothic look for it, plus she's tall and can play intimidating.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||03/04/2012|
"Maxim: I always thought Christian Bale but he doesn't seem charming and 'gentle' enough if that makes sense. Perhaps Michael Fassbender. "
Gentle? DeWinter isn't gentle, he's choking on supressed guilt and anger for most of the story - his second wife actually has to rescue from it (which is much more expicit in the book). But I get your point about Bale, who would probably play the role as too batshit to be redeemable. It's a story of redemption, after all.
Damn, can't someone get this film remade? The talent is out there!
|by Anonymous||reply 60||03/04/2012|
I'm stuck on who could play the cousin. He needs to be a cad and menacing and someone who would believably have an affair with Rebecca.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||03/04/2012|
Denzel as Maxim
Beyonce as "I"
Tyler Perry as Mrs. Danvers.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||03/04/2012|
Elias Koteas as the cousin with an impressive trouser bulge
Wanda Sykes as Mrs. Danvers
I don't care about the other people in the film.
|by Anonymous||reply 63||03/04/2012|
"Last night I dreamed I went to the Academy Awards and saw Wanda Sykes bring home OSCAR!"
|by Anonymous||reply 64||03/04/2012|
I also think the Gillian Anderson suggestion is brilliant, unexpected, and completely and utterly true. She could be brilliant in the role.
Sometimes posters here are astonishingly sharp.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||03/04/2012|
Hugh Jackman as Maxim de Winter
Emma Watson as the second Mrs. de Winter
Bebe Neuwirth as Mrs. Danvers
Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Van Hopper
|by Anonymous||reply 66||03/04/2012|
R60 - I am aware of that but he suppresses his anger well a lot of the time and comes off as charming, placid and even a little bit dull when he isn't having one of his Rebecca-related outbursts. Olivier was great as Maxim - charming and good-natured on the outside with the suppressed anger and darkness that bursts out at times. And yes I fear that Bale would not make him redeemable enough and would overdo the crazy. Rebecca is actually very similar to Jane Eyre and Michael Fassbender did a great Rochester so I think that he could pull it off.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||03/04/2012|
[quote]Rebecca is actually very similar to Jane Eyre and Michael Fassbender did a great Rochester so I think that he could pull it off.
That's exactly why Fassbender should never do it. Rebecca is basically a re-writing of Jane Eyre--you should never do adaptations of both novels, or you will risk being typecast forever.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||03/04/2012|
Beth Grant would make a fucking awesome Ms. Danvers.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||03/04/2012|
Michael Fassbender- Maxim de Winter
Carey Mulligan The second Mrs. de Winter II
Gillian Anderson- Mrs. Danvers
I still say Matt Bomer as Jack Favell
Soundtrack by Belle & Sebastian
|by Anonymous||reply 70||03/04/2012|
You forgot to mention that in the remake with Charles Dance, Emillia Fox and Diana Rigg, the role of Mrs. Van Hopper was played by DL favorite --
|by Anonymous||reply 71||03/04/2012|
Matt Bomer was Krystle Carrington!
|by Anonymous||reply 72||03/04/2012|
Maxima: Charlize Theron
The second Mr. de Winter: Eddie Redmayne
Mr. Danvers: Ralph Fiennes
|by Anonymous||reply 73||03/04/2012|
Mrs Van Hopper - Piper Laurie.
|by Anonymous||reply 74||03/04/2012|

Yes. Terrible how they brought her corpse to the recent opening of Carrie - The Musical at te Lucille Lortel.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||03/04/2012|
Tony Goldwyn as Max! He has a Laurence Olivier quality about him.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||01/25/2013|
I know that this is all in fun, but Hitchcock's movies should be left as they are. A remake can never do them justice. Hitchcock is considered the master of suspense for a reason. The rest are just imitators.

Lindsay Lohan as "Rebecca"
Yes, I know Rebecca doesn't appear, but the idea of Lohan and drowning is too delicious...
|by Anonymous||reply 80||01/25/2013|
Mia Wachikowska as the second Mrs. DeWinter. Very young, very good actress, and not a great beauty. Which is something that totally works for the role, everyone Maxim knows has this "Why HER?" attitude, and the character totally lacks the self-confidence of someone born with beauty.
Carey Mulligan is my second choice. Again, she's pretty, but not beautiful.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||01/25/2013|
R78 I'm sorry, but Hitchcock was wayyy over-rated. He was a horrible actor. I don't know what people saw in him.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||01/25/2013|
This sounds like it has Jessica Shitstain's name all over it.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||01/25/2013|
R78, I'd agree about most of Hitchcock's films, but "Rebecca" isn't really a "Hitchcock film". That is, it wasn't really Hitch's project, he was acting as a director for hire rather than creating the entire project from scratch.
"Rebecca" was a best-selling book that's still a good read today, and the movie is basically the book brought to life. The story has been remade for TV, and unlike "Vertigo" or "Rear Window", there's no reason it couldn't be remade again.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||01/25/2013|
Agree that Jennifer Jason Leigh can't act to save her life. She was embarrassing as Dottie Parker, equally has in Washington Square.
Love Clive Owens as Maxim. He does have to be dashing.
Love Colin Farrell as Jack.
Blanchett, Gillian A, or Mirren (even though too old) would be great as Danvers. So would Nicole Kidman, who's older now than Dame Judith was when she played it. As much as I love Siobhan Finneran, at this point it would be goofy to see her playing a role that's so similar to O'Brien.
Second Mrs. De Winter? I have no clue.
|by Anonymous||reply 85||01/25/2013|
The Second Mrs. de Winter: Rachel Weisz Maxim de Winter: Ralph Fiennes Mrs. Danvers: Jessica Lange
|by Anonymous||reply 86||03/22/2013|
The Second Mrs. de Winter: Carey Mulligan Maxim de Winter: Michael Fassbender Mrs. Danvers: Glenn Close
|by Anonymous||reply 87||03/22/2013|
Of course Mrs. Danvers needs to be a Mister this time.
You silly things!
|by Anonymous||reply 88||03/22/2013|
Ewan McGregor for Maxim.
They'd have to glam her down but I think Michelle Pfeiffer would be an amazing Mrs. Danvers.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||03/22/2013|
Now look what you bitches did!
It is getting remade by Dreamworks and helmed by some foreign director; casting presumably underway.
|by Anonymous||reply 90||03/22/2013|
Wow, so they are going to deviate from Hitchcocks version with a particular plot point. The writer will adapt from the novel and he wrote an early draft of Shutter island (I thought that was a great movie) so I hope they do it justice!
I wish we knew the cast.
|by Anonymous||reply 91||05/07/2013|
Gwyneth Paltrow, beloved of Datalounge, as Mrs. Danvers. It would really stretch her acting abilities!
Max should be played as a cynical closet case who wants a wife who can't see his big secret. Tony Goldwyn would fit.
Rebecca would be Ann Hathaway
The Second Mrs. de Winter would be Elle Fanning
Jack Favell would be Jake Gyllenhal
Mrs. Van Hopper would be Reese Witherspoon. All she would have to do is not act and have a nip or two to stay real.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||05/10/2013|
Melissa Mcarthy = Mrs.Danvers
|by Anonymous||reply 93||05/10/2013|
I think Daniel Craig could be Maxim De Winter!
|by Anonymous||reply 94||08/03/2013|
Annette Bening as Mrs. Danvers. She wouldn't have to set Manderley on fire, she would just shred it with her overacting.
|by Anonymous||reply 95||08/03/2013|
All these casting "ideas" have shown that there is no need for a remake of "Rebecca."
|by Anonymous||reply 96||08/03/2013|
r96 Couldn't agree more.
|by Anonymous||reply 97||08/04/2013|
Maxim has to be brooding and sexy: Fassbinder.
The 2nd has to be nervous, insecure, and clumsy: Mulligan (although Chastain could overact this, same as Fontaine did in the original)(Mia W is too strong and confident)
Danvers: Mirren. Don't know why everyone thinks she's too old for the part.
The sleazy/threatening cousin: Purefoy.
|by Anonymous||reply 98||08/04/2013|
