Whitney Houston, superstar of records, films, dies
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY
AP Music Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.
Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.
At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale."
She had the he perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.
She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.
But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.
"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.
It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.
She seemed to be born into greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.
Houston first started singing in the church as a child. In her teens, she sang backup for Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson and others, in addition to modeling. It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Houston perform.
"The time that I first saw her singing in her mother's act in a club ... it was such a stunning impact," Davis told "Good Morning America."
"To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine," he added.
Before long, the rest of the country would feel it, too. Houston made her album debut in 1985 with "Whitney Houston," which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. "Saving All My Love for You" brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. "How Will I Know," "You Give Good Love" and "The Greatest Love of All" also became hit singles.
Another multiplatinum album, "Whitney," came out in 1987 and included hits like "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."
The New York Times wrote that Houston "possesses one of her generation's most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity."
Her decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences. The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the "Soul Train Awards" in 1989.
"Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?" she told Katie Couric in 1996. "You're not black enough for them. I don't know. You're not R&B enough. You're very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them."
Some saw her 1992 marriage to former

Let's not bring race into it R76. Her fanbase outside of America is mostly made up of young white woman. People have stopped paying attention to her because she's been a crack addict since the 90s, was known as a rude diva before that and her last tour was a debacle. Doesn't mean they won't care that she's died. I for one feel very sad for her long suffering daughter.

Same here. Despite her problems, Whitney always seemed like a sweet person, like a genuine, happy free spirit.
Her songs made me so happy, and she had the voice that was like no other.
It makes me so sad that she had all these drug problems that ravaged her voice, and like others, I was rooting for her, and hoping she'd get out of it.
I don't usually fawn over celebrities, but this one hit me hard.

Sad. She could have had a wonderful and comfortable retirement. Traveling, beautiful home, no healthcare issues. Instead, just abusing drugs.

I'm shocked, too. And sad. Even though we all heard about drug rumors or whatever. I wish she could have gotten rid of all of that. Too young. R.I.P. Whitney.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | February 12, 2012 12:34 AM |
It's sad and a waste. her song - I think it was give me one moment in time - meant so much to me when I was in college, isolated, alone, scared, unsure, trapped in a bad relationship, family not speaking to me because they weren't "used to the idea" of me being gay - I had a cassette tape and played it over and over in my "walkman" and my car - yes I'm old. Well I'll miss her.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | February 12, 2012 12:34 AM |
Never a big Whitney fan, but sad for her and her family.
And there was just another thread where someone talked about Whitney and, if what they said was true, then she gave up a lot in life to do what her parents wanted - shades of MJ. Sad for anyone to lose their life. Sadder still to have had to fight that all your life. No amount of success or money can make that hurt go away.
Yes, bitches, I'm being serious. Deal.

Remember Whitney's basketball teammate, good friend and personal assistant Robin? A black lesbian New York friend of mine always said the source of trouble was good Christian Mama Sissy. Supposedly, Sissy laid down the law that Whitney could not be a lesbian no matter what and that basically she would rather Whitney be a drug addict than gay. BTW, Sissy herself is an alcoholic and Aunt Dionne Warwick is at best a pot head. The whole family's f'd up.

From TMZ...
Dionne Warwick and Cissy Houston spoke with Whitney Houston by phone just before she died and say Whitney seemed fine ... TMZ has learned.
Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston, spoke with her daughter 25-30 minutes before she died and nothing seemed unusual ... sources tell TMZ. We're told they talked about attending the Clive Davis pre-Grammy party.
Dionne Warwick, Whitney's cousin, called as well ... several hours before Whitney died ... to make sure they were sitting at the same table at Clive's party. And again ... there were no signs of trouble.
The people in touch with Dionne say she is inconsolable adding, "She is an absolute mess."
As for Cissy, we're told she is "hysterical."

Whitney Houston's posthumous turn: As star of 'Sparkle'
The death of Whitney Houston at the age of 48 is a deep loss for the music world. But it also has reverberations in another artistic realm--the movies.
Houston had recently finished shooting "Sparkle," the remake of the 1976 Irene Cara film that, eerily, focuses on talented young musicians whose lives are ruined by addiction. Houston also served as an executive producer on the movie, acquiring rights to the original film more than a decade ago. The movie, shot this past fall and currently in post-production, is scheduled to be released in August. No word yet on any release-date changes; we're awaiting word from a producer.
The original "Sparkle" told the story of the Williams sisters, a trio of 1950s-era Harlem singers whose stories were loosely inspired by the Supremes. Headed by Lonette McKee's Sister, the group also features Sister's sister Sparkle (Cara), Dolores (Dawn Smith) and several friends. As they begin to find success, though, Sister's life spirals out of control, with drug addiction eventually leading to her death.
The new version, directed by Salim Akil ("Jumping the Broom," television series "The Game"), is believed to follow a similar story line, with Jordin Sparks as the titular character who must find a way to achieve stardom despite the drama surrounding her family. Houston plays Emma, the sisters' less-than-encouraging mother. (The original character, named Effie in the 1976 film, was incarnated by Mary Alice.)
Though the film has a heavy music component, it is not known how much Houston's character sings on screen, if at all. Derek Luke and Cee Lo Green co-star opposite Houston, with Carmen Ejogo as Sister Williams.
In another surreal turn, Houston had said she originally wanted Aaliyah for the title role but was forced to reconfigure the project when the R&B singer was killed in a plane crash in August 2001.
Houston's publicist confirmed on Saturday that the star had died in Los Angeles, just a day before the Grammy Awards honoring the music world's finest. No cause of death has been given.
The "Sparkle" remake was supposed to serve as an auspicious return to the big screen for Houston, who gained fame as a silver-screen actress playing a pop star in 1992's "The Bodyguard" and then three years later as TV producer Savannah Jackson in the adaptation of the bestseller "Waiting to Exhale" but hadn't been in a movie since "The Preacher's Wife" sixteen years ago.
Houston also had a strong influence on numerous film soundtracks, producing and recording on "Exhale" and a host of other films. (A number of those songs could get some air time at the Grammy Awards on Sunday.) Houston also had an important if less high-profile role in the movies: she served as a producer on "The Princess Diaries" franchise.

R381 is a churro who lacks an understanding of the sweep and swoop of these things. Trying to loop Jacko and Judy with this particular train wreck is ridiculous. Chronic, public, tragic, marriage-driven substance addict who ruined her life, her family and her career is far from the inane circus freak carnival of ghouls of the one and the classic, matchless and decent but horrid mess diva lush pill popper of the other. No comparison.
Miss Houston is more like craptastic African American version of the druggie music tale - very dull and familiar. And she was completely unsympathetic, indecent and stupid about it.
"Mary" lacks the bile-curdling creepiness of this eye pecker at R381.

[quote] Ain't it the truth, [R403]? I found Cowell to be very interesting tonight.
I think blaming Bobby Brown is too easy -- a typical, knee-jerk response from folks who bought this Pop Princess image that Clive Davis created from the beginning. I agree with Wendy Williams that too many people, including Whitney, kept blaming Bobby for her mistakes when she needed to own up to her drug habit. She never owned up to it.
Blaming Big Bad Black Man Bobby doesn't wash. Cissy Houston said years ago that Whitney was somewhat of a wild child growing up, so maybe she knew about drugs before she got involved with Bobby.

Piers needs to start pronouncing her last name as "Hyooston," not "Hooston." Brits are often guilty of this. They need to think of it as Euston with an H in front of it.

Country music legend Dolly Parton, who wrote perhaps the most perfect Whitney Houston song, "I Will Always Love You," has joined the chorus of grieving stars upon hearing the tragic news of the singer's death on Saturday.
"Mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston," she says in a statement to Billboard. "I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, 'Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed.'"

R441, the rumors started in the mid 90s. There was trouble on the set of The Preacher's Wife, with Whitney being late or not showing up at all some days.
In October of 1997, she didn't show up for an appearance to promote Cinderella (Disney live-action version with Brandy) on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. Rosie was super-pissed, and remarked on it for days afterward on her show. By this point, Whitney was well known for regularly being a no-show at planned appearances. As well, post-Cinderella, her voice was starting to sound quite rough and people were talking.

Tragic. Whitney really did 'almost have it all' and somehow it still wasn't enough. I'm sure family and friends tried to intervene so many times over the years, but still she wasn't able to fully ever get it together again. She really was talented and success hit her very early, so that might have been a big reason for some of her troubles (saying nothing about whether the early rumors about Whitney and her 'friend' Robin ... if all of that were also true, living a lie and denial must've also contributed).
I liked her music and even laughed at some of her later diva-ish ways, but her downfall and tragic end really, really makes me so sad.
Sorry for her mother, daughter and the rest of her family.
I'm sure Bobby Brown is about to be totally vilified.

From the LA Times...
{quote]The Hilton is the scene for Davisâ annual gala. On Thursday, Houston dropped by the rehearsals to offer vocal tips for Brandy and Monica, who were slated to be one of the eveningâs headliners.
Press, including The Times, were in attendance for a junket with the reunited R&B divas and Davis. Though Houston greeted people her with a warm smile, she appeared disheveled in mismatched clothes and hair that was dripping wet with either sweat or water.
The visibly bloated singer displayed erratic behavior throughout the afternoon -- flailing her hands frenetically as she spoke to Brandy and Monica, skipping around the ballroom in a child-like fashion and wandering aimlessly about the lobby. It was mentioned by a Grammy staffer that security personnel received calls of the singer doing handstands by the pool.
After leaving rehearsals, Houston returned to the ballroom -- with her teenage daughter Bobbi Kristina in tow -- as camera crews set up for interviews. The singer smelled of alcohol and cigarettes. A Grammy staffer said that during the interviews with Brandy, Monica and Clive, Houston was dancing just off camera to make the singers and Davis laugh. Grammy personnel expressed concern that she'd be caught on camera, and that reporters would write about her behavior.
Finally her daughter pulled Houston out of the room, and the singer skipped off. In our post of the event, we called Houston's behavior "loose and lively."

The people in touch with Dionne say she is inconsolable adding, "She is an absolute mess.""

If only she had had taste, intelligence, a decent intelligent family to support her, education, and a grounding in priorities so that she could have done something with that wonderful instrument instead of turning out crap until she ruined herself.
Not one song that wasn't schlock. Not one performance that wasn't just sadly dumb. And so it was all a waste.
It may take a village to raise a child right, but what kind of a village is it that keeps ruining these talented young people and driving them to an early grave? Other great talents aren't bright but still persevere to do great things. All Miss Houston did was caterwaul in a derivative way, flash her gorgeous voice for nothing, and then pour gasoline down her throat, with people egging her on.

R530, there are people who believe legalization would allow for more control over drugs on the part of doctors and other health care professionals. They think it will create a situation where everything is above board rather than being hidden. I don't agree that would be the outcome, but they make some interesting arguments for their position.
For those who are discussing whether her sexuality had any effect on her drug usage, I once heard a group of anthropologists discuss the much higher incidence of alcoholism and drug abuse in repressed societies. I've wondered if repression has that kind of effect on entire countries and cultures, why would that not apply to individuals?

r532, I still don't get the connection he's drawing here. He's saying that if crack were legal, Whitney would have used it in a controlled way, and only sparingly, instead of becoming addicted to it and using it so copiously that it destroyed her body?
I don't see how Whitney being able to buy crack at the corner store would have caused her to use it LESS.

What makes this most tragic is that, with all the money she earned over the years, Whitney could've probably lived full time for years at a rehab facility and gotten a great deal of support from a staff of professionals. And continued to get support afterwards. I know she didn't write the songs she sang (writing is apparently where a lot of the best money is made), but nonetheless, she earned a great deal and could've helped herself more had she been able to. A waste.
Best wishes to every one who has managed to overcome the horrors of whatever addictions they've faced. I hope each one remains sucessful in keeping those demons at bay.

For the last couple of years, she's had the bloated abdomen of someone with advanced liver disease, possibly Hep C, given her recrational preferences. Liver disease could have played a role in her death.
Or the combination of chronic illness and the loss of her voice drove her to recklessness, or suicide.

My mother was in AA, and it's true -- there were scads of gay people in there who started using in part because of self-loathing/disgust issues.
Sexuality doesn't preclude addiction -- but consistently trying to suppress it creates a spectrum of maladaptive problems, addiction being a common one.

[quote]Dolly
And that, I believe, is one of the reasons why Dolly is one of the few celebs that we seem to love without reservation.
In a slightly more cynical question, did she give the AMPAS enough time to include her in the Oscar In Memoriam reel?
I know someone was knocking her for singing pop songs like "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" instead of the big, powerful ballads, but as a pre-gay, that was one of my favorite songs. Watching the video, even before she died, made me sad, because you see her there as a smiling, happy girl with a great big voice, and then the drugs happened.
I'm not sitting here weeping, and I'm not surprised, but I am actually sad about this. She deserved better.

VOTN, I think that the various criticisms Whitney got was just as destructive as Bobby Brown and drugs. There is nothing wrong with being pop star. The music as many has written bring joy to people. If music can move some one to experience an emotion, any emotion then it served it's purpose.

Essentially she chose the wrong drugs. It's possible to be an alcoholic or even a heroin addict and keep your career together, even to live a more or less normal lifespan. But it's pretty rare. You have to have a lot of drive and discipline and some sort of internal self-regulating mechanism that allows you to pull back and change course when you get too close to destroying yourself.
If you're a functional addict, show business can be very forgiving because you can get in and make a lot of money, then crash and recover and get in again and make more. And nobody really cares as long as you can deliver the goods. I've been surprised to find out how many people I have a pretty high opinion of managed to have very successful careers despite being flat-out junkies or alkies. Of course there's also the fact that the sort of erratic, egocentric behavior that drives people up the wall about addicts is also characteristic of stars in general, so it's not that out of line.
by Anonymous | reply 581 | February 12, 2012 12:27 PM |
Oh, and I should have added there's no such thing as a functional crack addict, just as there's no such thing as a functional meth addict. Once you start down that road, you are fucked.
by Anonymous | reply 582 | February 12, 2012 12:28 PM |
r436, Agreed.
What I should have made clear in my post is that it is true that Cowell is blaming Brown, but doesn't say so.
by Anonymous | reply 583 | February 12, 2012 12:32 PM |
R505, I knew you'd catch a bit of a flaming because of your post. Still, I agree with it 100%. With the exception of "I'm Saving All My Love For You", the rest was schlock.
Although, I far prefer over Houston the more subtle phrasing of say, Marilyn McCoo, nevertheless, the first time (early 80s) I laid ears on "Saving All My Love For You" I was stunned; enthralled.
I'll always give Houston her due and be grateful to her for the pure pleasure of listening to her debut hit single.
lol, r540.
And I agree, for Parton to include "my song" is telling.

Well, it is probably true that most of what she recorded was pretty disposable. You can hear that today in the UK in that a lot of radio stations are reporting the news but you're not hearing much music, unlike Winehouse and Etta James where there were a lot of cherished tracks.
Most stations are marking the occasion with silence because nobody really wants to play I Will Always Love You.

I always like Whitney's dance tracks better than her power ballads.
I'm Your Baby Tonight
So Emotional
Could I Have This Kiss Forever
It's Not Right But It's OK (Thunderpuss)
Queen Of The Night
My Name Is Not Susan
Nothin' But Love
For The Lovers
Most of her ballads were lame, but I did enjoy Miracle, All The Man That I Need and Exhale (Shoop Shoop).

crack and meth wouldn't exist without "the war on drugs." In the 30s bootleggers rarely smuggled beer, they brought in a shitload of whiskey tho. The money is in the strongest drug in the smallest quantity. Legalize drugs and nobody would want the hard stuff. They could just buy softer versions of it.
by Anonymous | reply 595 | February 12, 2012 2:18 PM |
Dolly has always mentioned that "I Will Always Love You" is her song, and has always expressed a great deal of thanks to Whitney for making it a hit. Over the years, I've seen the question brought up in interviews about whether Dolly felt any kind of competition with Whitney, and Dolly's always handled it beautifully, even joked that Whitney made her a millionaire (again).
Dolly has also been long-rumored to be someone who has a girlfriend, but she's managed to make it gracefully through her career, bless her. Though the excessive amount of plastic surgery might be her way of trying to control who she is and how she feels.
