Here you go!
Tyrone Power (as requested on the Scotty Bowers/Full Service thread)

Woo! Hoo! I love you OP! Way to go for making a thread about the ultimate gorgeous stud! Thanks a million love.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||02/11/2012|
Love it. Thank you.
I say he was his most gorgeous in The Rains Came when he took off his turban. I remember falling off my bed when I first saw it.
- if you wanted to use his image to sell a product, what product would it be?
|by Anonymous||reply 2||02/11/2012|
This is a hollow thread. Where is the gossip and the pics?
|by Anonymous||reply 3||02/11/2012|
The thread just started. Here's one of the youtubes (there are so many).
|by Anonymous||reply 4||02/11/2012|

This is why I say, even though I'm in my 40s, I am not an elder gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||02/11/2012|
He was one of the prettiest men who ever lived. He always looked like he was smelling shit, but except for that, he was gorgeous.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||02/11/2012|
No applause please (at Mr. Power's request).
|by Anonymous||reply 8||02/11/2012|
Never did a thing for me. I don't know why. I acknowledge that he was very handsome. Just "flatlines" in the same way as George Clooney does and they even resemble each other! I couldn't possibly diss anyone else for finding him gorgeous but give me John Payne any time over the likes of Tyrone.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||02/11/2012|
He had an affair with Judy Garland (what gay man DIDN'T have an affair with Judy Garland?).
Judy's fawning biographier Gerald Clarke believed they actually could have made a go of it because they were SO in love, but their love was destroyed by Judy's close friend and sometimes lover Betty Asher. He claims that Asher told Judy that Tyrone was reading the love letters she wrote to him aloud to his Marine buddies. Clarke says it was completely out of character for Power to have done such a thing, but Judy believed it and their affair was no more.
Clarke claims that Power pined for Judy afterward and after seeing "Meet Me In St. Louis" a color movie that captured "the full vibrancy of her personality and the warmth and fire in her brandy-brown eyes" he says that Power wrote a letter to a friend with words "drenched in longing (Clarke's writing is atrocious)": "My God, but she never looked more beautiful!"
Well, that's really pushing it. I think they did have an affair but it was not nearly the big deal Clarke makes it out it be.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||02/11/2012|
Norma was all over him when they filmed Marie Antoinette, but he was not interested.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||02/11/2012|
10 - It actually was a pretty big deal and she pressured him big-time to ask Annabella for a divorce. Annabella said no, and she told him that she knew who he was seeing, and she wrote it on a napkin. Judy Garland. He'd had lots of affairs but this was the first one he'd tried to dump her for. I don't think he wanted to; I think Judy put a lot of pressure on him.
Judy also claimed she was pregnant and had an abortion, but Liza doesn't think she had an abortion. She swears the love child is out in the midwest teaching (or was), and she told Ty Power Jr. that.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||02/11/2012|
11 - by the time he worked with Norma, he had met Annabella, and I'm sure he thought Norma was way too pushy. She became angry and when they went to a photo shoot, she wore these huge headdresses and covered him. The photographer put him on a box behind her so he could be seen over the headdress. Just as he snapped one of the photos, he fell through the box and all the photographer got was a photo of Norma and Power's arm. I always loved that story.
Norma wanted him for another film, but Zanuck was furious when he saw Marie Antoinette because Power, the #2 star in the world, was doing a supporting role despite star billing. So he never lent him out again. Thus Power lost Golden Boy and a bunch of other movies he was offered.
I think he had one of the most beautiful smiles in Hollywood, and never did he look more handsome than the night he escorted Norma Shearer to the Marie Antoinette premiere (and then left to see Annabella).
|by Anonymous||reply 13||02/11/2012|
9 - everybody can't do it for everyone, that's for sure. I have always thought there was a resemblance to George Clooney, but the younger Tyrone, pre-war, not so much. In fact as a young guy he reminds me a lot of Zac Efron. When I first saw this photo, I said, which movie is this from? Then I looked more closely and realized it wasn't Power. There is quite a resemblance.

My favorite photo - I like John Payne but he never looked like this:
|by Anonymous||reply 16||02/12/2012|
A bed, r2. A bed.
Born, as was Elizabeth Taylor, with double eyelashes.
So beautiful. Still lament his dying right when he did, because his Solomon to Lollobrigida's Sheba? Yowzah!
Tough to pick a fave role, but Zorro looms large. As the matador in "Blood and Sand" he excelled, also.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||02/12/2012|
The most beautiful man who ever lived.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||02/12/2012|
what movie is that hot photo from, the one with the mustache?
|by Anonymous||reply 19||02/13/2012|
Jessie James, and it is in color!
|by Anonymous||reply 20||02/13/2012|
My dad is originally from Spain ,and he said he remembers Tyrone was visiting Spain when he was a little kid. He said Tyrone was staying at the Ritz Hotel in Madrid and Tyrone was walking around in a white tee shirt and jeans. The manger of the hotel came up to Tyrone and said I'm sorry Mr. Power but we don't allow people to walk around the hotel in such casual attire. Tyrone said look, I just want to relax ,and I love to ware jeans and a tee shirt. However, the manger insisted Tyrone would have to change to more formal attire if he walks around the hotel because they had a dress code in the hotel.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||02/13/2012|
Unreal - I know when he was in the Philippines making a movie, he forgot his dress shoes and had to wear two-toned shoes to an event. The next night there was another event and all the male guests had on two-toned shoes!
|by Anonymous||reply 22||02/13/2012|
Jared Leto and Zac Efron have that same pretty boy look like Tyrone Power.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||02/13/2012|
ITA R23. They all have the same pretty eyes/eyelashes, cute little nose and full lips.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||02/14/2012|
Tyrone Power only liked oral sex. That's why his "thing" with Errol Flynn broke up. Flynn liked the full guy experience when he was doing men, and Ty wouldn't let him in his ass.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||02/14/2012|
Was Tyrone a top or bottom? I thought he was a top?
|by Anonymous||reply 26||02/14/2012|
This is R26. what I meant was, I thought Tyrone like to receive oral sex? rather than preforming oral sex?
|by Anonymous||reply 27||02/14/2012|
For some reason, I'm surprised that Ty wouldn't be into man-up-into-the-man sex. But...I'm not sure I believe the rumours about him and Errol, anyway. It always just seemed like a convenient way to pair up Hollywood's 2 best known bisexuals (or alleged bisexuals in Errol's case).
Years ago I saw a a gorgeous pic in a book of Tyrone, circa 1943, bathing in an outdoor Marine shower. Anyone know if it's on the net somewhere?
|by Anonymous||reply 28||02/14/2012|
Were Ty and his BFF Wattie Webb lovers?
|by Anonymous||reply 29||02/14/2012|
Sorry, I meant to sign that as R28, not R27.

If Powers had divorced I doubt he and Judy would have ridden off into the sunset together. It was a doomed relationship, just like all her other relationships with men who liked to fuck other men were.
And when did Liza Minnelli "swear" that Mama had Tyrone Power's love child and that he "is out in the midwest teaching (or was)?" That piece of info sounds like an incredibly ludicrous piece of bullshit.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||02/14/2012|
"Tyrone Power only liked oral sex. That's why his "thing" with Errol Flynn broke up. Flynn liked the full guy experience when he was doing men, and Ty wouldn't let him in his ass."
And how exactly would you know this? Explain.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||02/14/2012|
31 - The Liza thing, Liza told that to a man she worked with, he was assistant producer on a TV thing that she ended up not doing; and she also told Tyrone Power Jr. that.
Power's stepdaughter destroyed the letters he wrote to her mother after their divorce. He realized he had made a huge mistake and he wanted to remarry her. Apparently they were very anguished. I know after his divorce from Linda, he went to see Annabella in Paris and begged her to marry him again. Unfortunately, his dalliances with Lana and then divorcing her to marry Linda was not only an embarrassment to her but an insult. They always loved one another but she wasn't about to go back to that. I know she believed if she'd just been able to get pregnant, things would have been different.
Where am I getting this, the Guiles book has some of their letters.
29 - don't know but I think initially a lot of friends were lovers. I don't think he and Flynn were lovers.
31 - I agree, he would not have married Judy as he had no intention of marrying Lana. He flipped over Linda and I think the only way he could keep her was to marry her.
28 - that photo is on the Internet somewhere.
27 - from what little I know he liked to receive it and let guys (and women for that matter) go down on him at Fox. There's a story, unrelated to this, that he had a thing with Betty Grable and she'd left a tampon in. I forget the details.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||02/14/2012|
I still don't believe the love child story. During the period when the supposed love child was born Judy Garland was constantly working and constantly in the public eye. There would have been no way to conceal a pregnancy in those circumstances. Loretta Young had to disappear for months in Europe while concocting a story to account for her illegitimate daughter with Clark Gable. On the other hand, Ingrid Bergman didn't bother to hide her pregnancy resulting from her love affair with Roberto Rossellini.
Rumors of secret children born to prominent movies stars have been around a long time, but they almost universally have no basic in fact. Some people have said Jean Harlow had a son that still survives (she had a few abortions but never brought a pregnancy to term). And Marilyn Monroe herself started the rumor that she had a baby as a teenager that she was forced to give up (she said it was a boy). But there was never any proof of that, and it's been confirmed that she died childless.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||02/14/2012|
Consider the source - Liza! I never said it was true or that anyone else believed it. And who knows, by now, Liza may have moved off of it and onto something else.
Tyrone Power did have illegitimate children, one conceived while he was making Jesse James and another one conceived before he shipped out in the war. That last one is open to question. I've seen a photo of the guy and for some reasons, the good genes missed him.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||02/14/2012|
Just last week I saw Witness for the Prosecution starring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton. What a movie! More shocking than the Crying Game.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||02/14/2012|
R33, I remember that story about Betty Grable's vagina. Only, it wasn't a tampon that was left in her vagina. Betty Grable had intercourse with Tyrone and he used a condom. However, it was shoved way up her vagina that they both forgot it. When Betty Grable was walking around, she noticed she had a horrible smell and didn't understand why. She went to a doctors and it was Tyrone condom from weeks before stuck in her vagina and the doctor had to remove it.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||02/14/2012|
I remember I once read that Marylin Monroe used to go to the same masseuse that Tyrone did. The masseuse was a close friend of hers ,and she said the masseuse told her Tyrone loved men and he was definitely gay. she laughed and said she knew Tyrone was fruity.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||02/14/2012|
I may be remembering wrong, but I thought Marilyn told the masseuse that Tyrone had something going with Errol Flynn, which she heard from Truman Capote. I doubt it because if anything happened between them, it happened in the late '30s or '40s. By the '50s Errol was trashed and Tyrone was in New York and Europe. I know in the Garbo book, Peter Viertel told the author there wasn't any affair. He and his wife knew both of them very well.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||02/15/2012|
r22, you need to learn how to reference other posts/posters. Simply put an r (lower case is fine) in before those numbers that you're haphazardly throwing about, and watch the magic happen.
Otherwise you're giving everybody a headache trying to figure out what or who you're talking about.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||02/15/2012|
Tyrone Power. Robert Taylor. Difficult to tell apart? Both so dull, but the latter was the pretty one, oui?
|by Anonymous||reply 41||02/15/2012|
This is R38. Thank you R39 you are absolutely right. that is definitely how the story goes.I stand corrected. Thanks a million R39, you're a gem.t
|by Anonymous||reply 42||02/15/2012|
I'm a fan of both Tyrone and Robert Taylor, R41. I think there is common confusion between the two of them. For instance, the person who relayed me the Bob Monkhouse bath story, put Bob's name in there instead of Ty's.
Eleanor Parker and Ava Gardner claimed to have had affairs with Robert Taylor. I'm not so sure he was bi or gay as is usually claimed. If he was bi/gay, I think he repressed it.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||02/15/2012|
Dana Wynter [who died last year] also said they had an affair when they made a movie together in the 50s.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||02/15/2012|
Like a lot of american stars Ty spent a lot of time in England in the 50s (tax break reasons) making some movies there (Seven Waves Away, when he was involved with co-star Mai Zetterling, Solomon & Sheba in Europe) and it seems he was quite bi-then, a woman I used to know remembered seeing him around Notting Hill in London a lot.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||02/15/2012|
"I may be remembering wrong, but I thought Marilyn told the masseuse that Tyrone had something going with Errol Flynn, which she heard from Truman Capote."
A lot of what Truman Capote said was fiction mixed with a grain of fact. Or pure fiction. He used to tell a story of how he was in Greta Garbo's apartment; he said she owned a painting by Picasso and that it was hanging on the wall upside down. Greta Garbo herself refuted that; she said she that "little man" had never been in her apartment.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||02/15/2012|
oh dear, I apologize about not putting the R in. I did answer previously and use them. I guess it depends on how exhausted I am at the time.
[R43] At this point everyone has been outed, Robert Taylor too. I agree with you. I don't think he acted on it if he was bi. In some thread I talked about some Barbara Stanwyck letters I own where she is very unhappy that he is not home for Christmas during the war. I know when her house burned down she said the worst thing about it was losing his letters. She never spoke to Lana Turner again after her affair with Taylor. But you hear all sorts of things about both of them. Even if one or both of them were bi, it does seem like it was a real marriage.
[R45] Power had many, many involvements with women, even while he was living with Mai. There are two books about them, by the way, On the Wing by Sayre and Mai's book All Those Tomorrows. He had a girlfriend in England, an actress named Thelma Faye, at around the same time. He met his third wife while with Mai and left Mai for her. Both women were on the set of Witness for the Prosecution at different times.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||02/15/2012|
Notting Hill in London a lot.
R45, is that a gay area of London? Did your friend see Tyrone with a guy "friend"? details! please!
|by Anonymous||reply 48||02/15/2012|
I recently saw the Mark of Zorro on the big screen. Boy were those pants tight. And I mean TIGHT.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||02/17/2012|
Annabella a dyke, btw. From my grandaddy, a Hollywood-Bway writer.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||02/17/2012|
He was very handsome when he was younger but by the time he appeared in Witness for the Prosecution, not long after the days of his youth, he was not at all sexy.
And I love older men! Connery, Clooney, Banderas, Washington, etc., etc., the number of celebrities who age to perfection is impressive! Power was just not a man who looked very good in his maturity.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||02/17/2012|
ITA, R51. He's beautiful in Jesse James and that movie where he played an Indian doctor but he's just too femme and pretty for me and not much of a body. In Old Chicago, opposite Don Ameche, Ameche and even Alice Fay are more masculine than him. I prefer his more masculine peers like Clark Gable.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||02/17/2012|
Does anyone think maybe Tyrone and Annabella might have been the love of each others lives because not only they genuinely loved each other ,but they understood each others bisexuality?
|by Anonymous||reply 53||02/17/2012|
This guy is not as cute as Tyrone Power, but if you watch and "like" his video, he'll bite off a chicken's head for you!
|by Anonymous||reply 54||02/17/2012|
Yes r48 Notting Hill is a rather gay area of London, back in the 50s it would have attracted the hip intelligencia who move to the big cities to live their lives, mainly in rented rooms and apartments. Notting Hill always attracted that crowd and was full of coffee bars (where my female friend used to see him - it must have been around 1957 - the new black immigrants were also moving to the area then.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||02/17/2012|
[R50] I have to respectfully disagree about Annabella. Playing a lesbian in a play does not make her one in real life. That rumor started when she played a lesbian in Jacobowsky and the Colonel on Broadway. I hasten to add that if she had really been gay, as closeted as people were then, she wouldn't have taken the role.
I knew at one time several friends of hers,including Pat Boyer, Aline Griffith, and Patricia Neal, and I know one who survives today. Her wonderful daughter Anne was a friend of mine as well. Annabella had a big affair with Roald Dahl (before Pat), and he said that she taught him a lot about sex. She also upset Tyrone a great deal when he was on leave and walked in on a party she was having when she was obviously with another man. When he left for the war, it was pretty much understood that the marriage wasn't going to continue, but after they war, they decided to try again. And what they went through to have a child, including her surgery, was very sad. And if you ever read their letters, you'd know they were in love.
She was hurt and insulted by the way Tyrone left him, but she never stopped loving him.
Did they understand each other's bisexuality? No. She tolerated his.
It's one thing to gossip about these people as if they are not real, but it's another thing when you know members of the family and are very aware that something is untrue. It is also disrespectful of the feelings she had for her husband. Were she bisexual, I'd be the first one to say so. She wasn't.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||02/17/2012|
[R51] He actually look great in his maturity, if you look at photos off the set during that time and during the filming of Solomon and Sheba. Accrding to Mai Zetterling, he would go on the set with no sleep, and if you told him he didn't look good, he'd shrug. He and Debbie, his third wife, are in a John Mills DVD, and she's pregnant, so it's right before he died, and he looks fantastic.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||02/17/2012|
[R55] He lived in London in 1956, so it might have been then. In 1957 he was back in the states for almost all of it. In '57 he had a huge Christmas party in New York and Mike Todd and Elizabeth Taylor attended. He left in the middle of it to do a narration and came back. Elizabeth was in one room and Todd was in another, and she'd say, Mike is eating again, and run into the other room and take the food away from him.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||02/17/2012|
Also Annabella was brought to Hollywood by Zanuck and was getting the star buildup until she wanted to marry Power. Zanuck offered her films in Europe to get her out of the country, but she refused. She was blacklisted after that and her film career ended up being nothing in this country. After he married Annabella, Zanuck gave him a fluffy little film "Daytime Wife" as punishment for getting married against his wishes. Louis B. Mayer wanted everyone married. Zanuck didn't. He was sorry he brought Annabella to the U.S. and exacted his revenge.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||02/17/2012|
So the women in Tyrone Power's life were willing to put up with his bisexuality because they were madly in love with him?
Why didn't Lizbeth Taylor ever mentioned Tyrone in her later years, and talk about what he was like? She talked about other gay and bisexual men in her life. She loved to hang around with gay men a lot. Its too bad Roddy McDowall didn't write an autobiography about his experiences with the rich and famous and what he witnessed. Can you imagine what that man took with him to the grave?!!!UGH!
|by Anonymous||reply 60||02/18/2012|
In Robert Evens autobiography, "The Kid Stays in The Picture", He said Tyrone had extraordinary Black Irish good looks.Robert said Tyrone was a man's man and a ladies man. He said yet he was very aristocratic without knowing it and he was never boastful. He had complete lack of narcissism.
I think Robert Evens was trying to convey that Tyrone was straight when he said Tyrone was a man's man and a ladies man.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||02/18/2012|
[R51] You need the '40s Tyrone. Try The Black Swan (not Natalie Portman). He's buff and scruffy and gorgeous.
Annabella - were there even a hint of her being bi or gay, you're crazy if you don't think Scotty would have been all over it in his book, fixing her up with women and having threesomes. I read the Guiles book and she had both her mother and sister in the house, so she would have needed to stop at the gas station. Hah!
[R60]I don't know that he and Liz Taylor were anything more than social friends. I actually think his friendship was with Mike Todd.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||02/18/2012|
"Lizbeth Taylor"? LIZBETH?!
|by Anonymous||reply 63||02/18/2012|
Robert Taylor had a soft virtually non-existent jaw line and severe widow's peak and doesn't really compare to Tyrone, young or old.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||02/18/2012|
WOW! These are beautiful!
|by Anonymous||reply 65||02/19/2012|
I said this on another thread as well, but if you claim the actor or actress drank, did drugs, had man affairs with the opposite sex, was mean, etc. people usually don't get over heated that much ,but if you say he or say were gay, all hell breaks loose. Even people who claim to be liberal minded ,and who knew those actors and actress when they were alive go especially berserk!
|by Anonymous||reply 66||02/20/2012|
Usually there is a little more documentation for those things, whereas more discreet areas of a person's sex life are either not well known or there's not much evidence for it. I suppose people feel to wait until someone is dead, rather than letting the person tell his or her own story or be interviewed about it after the stories emerge as being unfair and suspicious.
When Michael Redgrave was working on his autobiography, he told his son that he was bisexual. His son told him if that was the case, he needed to talk about it in his book. If some of these books came from a family member or biographer who had access to a person's letters or diaries and wanted to tell their whole story -- I don't know that a well-referenced book would be viewed with as much shock.
Frankly, men one meets sometimes brag about having slept with (name the celebrity) - I take it with a large grain of salt. I've also heard several stories that are said to have involved one actor, and the next time I hear it, it involved a different one. So I think some skepticism is in order.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||02/20/2012|
Redgrave only told his son when writing his autobiography? Hadn't he previously moved a boyfriend into the family home?
|by Anonymous||reply 68||02/20/2012|
What are the best Tyrone movies to see? I mean the best movies, not necessarily the ones he's hottest in.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||02/20/2012|
[R68] No the boyfriend had his own family and lived nearby. The families knew one another. This is as far as I know. I may have everything wrong except that Redgrave's son did encourage him to write about it.
|by Anonymous||reply 70||02/20/2012|
[R69] Nightmare Alley, The Mark of Zorro, Blood and Sand, The Razor's Edge, This Above All, Jesse James, Alexander's Ragtime Band, The Eddy Duchin Story, The Long Gray Line, Witness for the Prosecution, Love is News, Cafe Metropole. The second Power DVD set has the last two and This Above All, and the first set has Blood and Sand. The rest are out individually. I also happen to love two that aren't out (except for VHS), Mississippi Gambler and Second Fiddle.
|by Anonymous||reply 71||02/20/2012|
Thanks r71. That was very helpful. Is there a thread here with recommendations for the best classical movies (40's, 50's, 60's)?
|by Anonymous||reply 72||02/20/2012|
R71, don't forget Johnny Apollo. I LOVE that film. Somebody at 20TH Century Fox must have been gay - they CONSTANTLY had their men go shirtless - Victor Mature, Tyrone Power, Anthony Quinn, John Payne.
Tyrone shirtless at the peak of his beauty is a lovely naturally pretty sight.
|by Anonymous||reply 73||02/20/2012|
Someone should start a thread so non-members have one area to suggest new thead ideas or ask for a new thread to be started.
Something with an easy title to be searched for.
|by Anonymous||reply 74||02/20/2012|
[R72] If you have Netflix, or if not, you can just google or go to Wikipedia for the great directors: Billy Wilder, Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Michael Curtiz, William Wellman, William Wyler, John Houston, Rouben Mamoulian, and start with those, and that should get you started. That will take in many, many great films.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||02/20/2012|
I posted this in the Scotty thread as well. Wasn’t Gore Vidal’s novel, The City and the Pillar was about Tyrone Power? It was about a gay man. Then ironically here Gore is supporting Scotty who mentions having a sexual relationship with Tyrone? This is all really weird and you wonder what is up with Gore Vidal and the Tyrone Power connection?
|by Anonymous||reply 76||02/22/2012|
Didn't Tyrone Power and Rosalind Russell's husband had an affair? I have read that her husband was bisexual, and I saw a picture of him.That man was another gorgeous stud as well! WOW! The men were so stunning back then!
|by Anonymous||reply 77||02/22/2012|
I posted this on the Scotty thread as well. I thought this particular information applies with this thread as well. In author, Gene Shalit's book, Great Hollywood Wit, he has very interesting quotes from famous people. One of the quotes is from actress, Nancy Walker who said the following, which is really revealing:
"Listen, the love between two men is beautiful. I'd love to be between, say, Tyrone Power and Montgomery Clift. Hell, I was born the wrong gender.”
|by Anonymous||reply 78||02/22/2012|
[R76] I think Gore Vidal may have had a crush on Tyrone Power but in all my reading and looking at letters and postcards, I don't think they were friends. Also I don't think City and the Pillar was based on Tyrone Power. The book is what it's intended to be, fiction. That's a rumor, just like the song Mad About the Boy, written in 1930 while Tyrone Power was still in high school, was written about him. Two Weeks in Another Town is supposed to be based on him too.
[R77] I have never heard that, but that doesn't mean it isn't true.
[R78]Nancy was very close friends with Montgomery Clift, don't know if she knew Tyrone, and am pretty sure Clift and Power never had an affair.

[quote]I remember that story about Betty Grable's vagina.
This is why I come to Datalounge!

R79 are you the guy who has the superb knowledge on Tyrone from the Scotty thread? If you are not, you still seem really knowledgeable, and I appreciate your input, your terrific! I am aware that Tyrone and Montgomery weren't an item. Also, I remember Nancy walker was a friend of Montgomery Clift. Actually both her and her husband were friends of his and they both were trying to help Clift because he had a major issue dealing with his homosexuality, alcohol ,and other issues. Nancy Walker was an actress in Hollywood as far back as the 40's ,and she must have known Tyrone was bisexual or gay if she made a statement like that linking Tyrone. You notice she didn't chose Montgomery and a straight stud in Hollywood,but another stud who may have been bisexual or gay. I don't think her sort of, tongue and cheek statement was a coincidence . Also, Nancy Walker loved to hang out with gay men and she had many gay friends.

Does anyone know why did Kim Novak and Tyrone hated each other? They said Tyrone was a prankster , very nice man, and he was very sweet to everyone he ever worked with. However, when he worked with Kim Novak, he said she was a spoiled bitch. Did he hit on her and she rejected his advances? What was the deal between those two? I wish Kim Novak would write her autobiography! I heard she was in the process of writing her autobiography ,and her house burned down along with her computer which contained her manuscript.She is superstitious and she thought it was a sign that she shouldn't write anything again, Good grief!

[R81] Yes I'm the guy. Didn't know all that about Walker. Saw her one night with Hudson when they went to see John Schuck's cabaret show. They walked through the restaurant to get to the downstairs cabaret. She had a look on her face that could stop a clock.
[R82]He thought she was the most unprofessional human being he had ever encountered. I'm sure she wasn't aware that he didn't like her. There is a photo of her at his daughter's birthday party, and the other little girl is playing with her pearl necklace, and Kim is smiling at her.
Tyrone was a prankster in his early career when he worked with Don Ameche and Alice Faye, that era. I don't think he played pranks later on at all. At the time of Eddy Duchin he was seeing a Vogue editor, Mary Roblee. There are some fabulous photos taken by George Sidney of Kim and Tyrone laying side by side in between posing for photos. She is laying on his arm, he is on his side facing her. He has on a T-shirt and he has the suspenders off of his shoulders. The photo from this session is on one of the record albums I had as a kid.
One interesting thing, I was at the doctor's and brought along a book I purchased at a garage sale called Radie's World about the gossip columnist Radie Harris. I have letters Tyrone wrote to her. She was best friends with Vivien Leigh, Tyrone Power, and interviewed Marilyn Monroe a lot.
One thing she said is that she would never, ever print what she called a "phony pitch." She tells a story of a publicist linking his female client with "one of the biggest homosexuals in the business" and she goes on to say that he would not have liked being linked with this person at all. Another phony pitch was when Katharine Hepburn made a big reservation for 8 people to go see a nightclub act, when Radie knew she was away filming.
She talks at length about Lana and Tyrone, the third wife, and Linda and the way she raised the kids. All very interesting. She said that Tyrone loved foreign women with accents, and points out that his last wife had a very thick southern accent.
If you like old Hollywood, it's a fun read. She spent a lot of time in England as well and writes a lot about Taylor-Burton.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||02/24/2012|
One other thing Radie said that I found interesting. In interviewing Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn while married to Arthur Miller said she knew that the fashion was to have separate bedrooms but that she just had one.
That is actually true, especially when people had money, that they had separate bedrooms. This was true of my aunt and uncle who had separate bedrooms and two children. Sometimes it's commented on to show that people weren't really "married," but back then, and especially in Hollywood, it was often because one had to get up at 4 a.m. and the other didn't. I think in my aunt and uncle's case, one liked to read late into the night and the other didn't. Also it could be because one snored etc. Not that there weren't couples who had the marriage of convenience type of thing, I'm not saying that, but it was the fashion back then.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||02/24/2012|
R83, thanks a million! I will read that book. What do you think about Farley Granger in his autobiography when he said he state and Tyrone and Linda's place and she asked him if he liked her or her husband? That is as far as Farley Granger goes with that. He leaves the reader hanging there wondering what the hell is he trying to say? Do you think Linda Christian was giving him an offer if he would like to have sex with her husband or her? It sounds like he was hinting that they had an open marriage?
|by Anonymous||reply 85||02/24/2012|
If it is true about Tyrone and Errol Flynn, then wow. What a scene that would have been to see these two strikingly handsome men having sex. Tyrone would have made a gorgeous bottom.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||02/26/2012|
I knew Linda in her later years, before she became ill. She insisted that Ty was not gay or bi. But she was no fool. She branded herself as Mrs. Tyrone Power and admitting that he was gay or bi would have damaged the brand.
As an aside, Taryn was staying at a friends condo next door to mine with the son and new baby around ten years ago or so. For some reason I had TCM on, and they were playing the movie Athena, in which Linda played the bitch. The doorbell rang, and it was Linda asking if her grandson could borrow a futon I had. Young Linda on TV, old Linda at my front door. I thought I was tripping.
She sent the grandson over, around sixteen at the time. Not just the spitting image of Tyrone Power, but TYRONE FUCKING POWER himself. That kid has to be gorgeous by now, because he was gorgeous then and had those long black eyelashes his grandfather had. Not that I noticed.
Anyway, Linda regaled me with lots of stories about Tyrone, old Hollywood, and her first boyfriend Errol Flynn.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||02/26/2012|
R87, any pictures of the grandson that you can post?
I really think all of his wives and girlfriends have denied he was bisexual because then it would mean that the world's most handsome man wouldn't be interested entirely in them which would hit their egos really hard.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||02/26/2012|
[R86] I doubt that happened.
[R83] I have a photo of a party where Linda is sitting on Tyrone's lap and Farley is in a chair in the room, and there are some other people there. I'm not sure that Linda and Tyrone ever had an official open marriage. I think the first few years they were married, they were very happy. Linda got pregnant several times and miscarried, and one child was stillborn. They were thrilled when Romina was born. I think Linda got pregnant with Taryn in an attempt to save the marriage, and for a time, he did stick around.
By the time Farley was staying over the garage at that house on Copa d'Oro, I think things were different. He started having an affair with Anita Ekberg during Mississippi Gambler, and after Linda didn't get the lead opposite him in that movie, things started to fall apart.
As far as Linda saying what she said to Farley, I think she always was saying things like that to guys, testing the waters, so to speak. It was her way of trying to find out if he was gay.
Debbie Reynolds tells a story of being on the film set of Athena which featured Linda and starred Edmund Purdom, and how much everyone loved it when Tyrone came around to see her. Everyone would surround him and talk to him. One day he showed up and Linda wasn't around. Debbie had seen her go off somewhere so she hopped on her bike and as she was going by a particular spot, she heard some rustling in the bushes. She said, Linda, Tyrone is here. Linda stands up, smoothes her dress and says, thank you, Debbie. Linda goes back and greets Tyrone like she hadn't just been in the bushes with Edmund. At that point, there's no question in my mind that Tyrone was showing up to see if he could catch her in the act because they separated not long after that. My point is, Linda was as brazen as you could get, and asking Granger a question like that was mild behavior on her part.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||02/26/2012|
R89, I remember reading that about Debbie Reynolds.
R89, I remember Susielee said she was aware of two sex orgies that Tyrone and Linda had during their marriage at their estate.

Here are pictures of Linda's and Tyrone's estate.

Since Tyrone didn't believe in labels as far as sexuality, that is like a give away that the man was bisexual because usually bisexual guys always make that claim. I never hear a straight or gay guy make that statement.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||02/27/2012|
I've tried to find a photo of the grandson, r88, but the closest I could find is one when Taryn first met Tyrone Jr in 1990. As I recall, Tony Tyrone (the grandson) was a sixteen year old version of Ty Jr.
When I met Linda in the mid 90's, she claimed she was still married to Edmund Purdom and spent all her money trying unsuccessfully to divorce him. How you can spend over thirty years trying to divorce someone and not succeed, I don't know. She also claimed she was "spiritually married" to some blond, much younger Italian guy but I think that was just for the cover of an Italian magazine.
The first night I met her, she lent me a copy of her autobiography. I devoured it. The cover was the portrait Diego Rivera painted for her. She writes about her various affairs (Erroll Flynn, some South American dictator (Baby), a famous Italian race course driver who was killed in a race and told me about Diego Rivera, Glenn Ford and Rubirosa. She told my partner that Rubirosa had a huge dick and nearly split her in two. Now that I think about it, she never mentioned if Tyrone had a big dick or not.
I found a paperback copy of the book in Seattle and gave it to her. Wish I had kept it.
|by Anonymous||reply 93||02/27/2012|
[R93]Rubrirosa didn't have a big dick. He had a HUMUNGOUS dick. That's why all the women were after him.
[R92]I don't know whether or not he believed in labels. I do know he believed you fell in love with a person. I don't think anyone is denying he was bisexual.
[R88]The wives knew and accepted it, the first two anyway. I don't think the girlfriends for the most part were aware of his bisexuality. From what I understand that man kept his life very compartmentalized and very organized.
[R89]Yes, I'm aware that that was a rumor. I am guessing with no proof that Linda and Tyrone had a couple of regular parties, which everyone in their set did, and that with drink etc. it turned into an orgy. Who participated, no idea. Do I think he liked group sex? From what I understand not as a steady diet, and not with Mai Zetterling, possibly with Linda. I think there is a story somewhere that he was involved in a threesome, two guys and a woman, and he ended up dating the woman.
|by Anonymous||reply 94||02/27/2012|
R93, isn't your link a picture of Tyrone's son many moons ago? I thought you were posting a picture of one of the grandson's? Wow! Tyrone's son doesn't look the same today for some reason. What is Tyrone's son like? He was sure a stud like his father. I bet he got a lot of offers too. He is still super handsome!
|by Anonymous||reply 95||02/28/2012|
Other than Tyrone Power's two daughter's and son, who are the other two guys?
|by Anonymous||reply 96||02/28/2012|
That photo is four years old, taken at the Tyrone Power tribute in Los Angeles. I don't know who the other guys are. That's Ty's wife, the blond, Carly, on the end, and Romina's daughter Stella is on the other end. I think the two guys must be family somehow. I know Romina's son Yari was there, but he's not in the photo.
|by Anonymous||reply 97||02/28/2012|
R87, what is the name of that grandson that you saw that day?
BTW, did Linda Christian have a high IQ? She spoke 7 languages, worked in Israel and did numerous other things correct?
I thought for sure Susielee said Tyrone believed in no sexual labels?
Why did Tyrone's sister never married? She was really pretty!
|by Anonymous||reply 98||03/02/2012|
I Said something similar to this on the Scotty Bower thread, but why do we not have guys that look incredible like Tyrone anymore? It seems like years ago it was like an automatic studzilla machine that generated gorgeous men!
Has anyone eve seen any guys that look very close to Tyrone Power now a days? other than his son and grandson? Also,any gay guys that look like Tyrone Power?
|by Anonymous||reply 99||03/02/2012|
r98, I believe the grandson's name is Tony Tyrone.
As for Linda having a high IQ, I suppose so. I know she spoke Spanish, Italian, English and I believe Dutch.
But I don't think she was very smart when it came to money. I read somewhere that she had the first million dollar Hollywood divorce settlement. But she claimed that she lost all her money (including selling the Diego Rivera portrait) trying to divorce Edmund Purdom all those years. I don't know how smart that is.
When I first met her, she was living at a friends guest house, which was pretty modest. Later Romina bought her a condo at the Palm Springs Racquet Club, again pretty modest.
But for someone who lived the life she led, she was actually pretty down to earth. She could go full on diva when she wanted to. One time I went to a local political fundraiser with her, along with some other friends. A band of draq queens in rainbow thongs and rollerblades crashed the event and began harassing me. "Linda, these drag queens are bothering me!" She went full diva, drew herself up and said, "Don't worry Darling. I'll take care of these queens. Now run along and get me a double vodka, neat."

[quote]As an aside, Taryn was staying at a friends condo next door to mine with the son and new baby around ten years ago or so.
Taryn lived next door to me in the late 70s on Harrat St near Sunset and Doheny. I lived in an apartment building and she was seeing Richard Chamberlain because I think they did a movie together and were publicizing it. I knew he was gay. I remember wondering if she had an open mind like her father. I couldn't see them together. Dick likes everything "just so" and she was kind of in an ethnic hippie phase. The movie flopped and so did their "romance."
|by Anonymous||reply 102||03/03/2012|
Just read the section on Ty Power in the book.
EWWWW! I absolutely do not believe that Ty Power liked "doo-doo queens" who would dump on him.
|by Anonymous||reply 103||03/03/2012|
I saw Witness for the Prosecution recently. I missed the first few minutes of the movie so this issue may have been addressed. Was Power's character supposed to be English? He didn't attempt to hide his American accent at all.
|by Anonymous||reply 104||03/03/2012|
[R101}Taryn herself has mentioned the resemblance between her dad and Tony Tyrone. I haven't met him, but I think it is probably in certain expressions or angles. Now, Ty Jr.'s son is blonde like his mother, but even there, I can see a little resemblance.
[R102]Taryn is still a hippie and yes, she is very open-minded. I'm sure as you indicate it was only a friendship and the tabloids made it into something else and they just played along.
[R103]You are right. It is untrue.
[R104]It's strange because Power could both do and suggest an English accent. I don't know if Wilder told him not to bother, that after all those years, it would just sound funny coming from him, or what. But it's interesting how movies change everything - when they did a made for TV remake, the character was American as well.
|by Anonymous||reply 105||03/04/2012|
Tyrone's sister was married twice. I think you have her confused with someone else - she was not a particularly pretty woman. Her name was Anne, as was his stepdaughter's. His stepdaughter was married to Oskar Werner.
|by Anonymous||reply 106||03/04/2012|
Posted this very statement on the Scotty Bowers thread as well.
Since Tyrone Power's children know that their father was bisexual, but keep publicly quiet about their father, and this includes other children and relatives of other rich and famous people, it makes it much more worse not to say anything publicly because there is this no holds barred on speculation, innuendo, exaggeration, etc. that is out there. If they came out and said, their father were gay or bisexual, all of these claims that are out there that are 5% true and 95% false wouldn't manifest in publications of outrageous claims and accusations because there wouldn't be anything really to say because it directly came from the family.

Did Tab Hunter have a sexual thing with Tyrone? I saw a picture of Tyrone presenting an award to young Tab Hunter and the way Tyrone looked at young, gorgeous Tab Hunter it seemed like he was attracted to him. The picture is in Tab Hunter's book btw.

|by Anonymous||reply 114||03/20/2012|
R110 you said best! I couldn't agree with you more!
|by Anonymous||reply 115||03/20/2012|
[R108]I don't think there is any deal with Tyrone except that Hunter mentions him in his book as receiving an award from him and how great it was because he'd always been an admirer.
[R112]Because the popularity of the name Tyrone comes from this white guy Tyrone, that's why. It was his father's name, grandfather's name - all the way back. The name is Irish and came into popular use when Tyrone Power became a big star in the mid-1930s.
|by Anonymous||reply 116||03/21/2012|
[R110}I meant to tell my favorite Razor's Edge story. The director told Power he wanted a certain look for the scene where he returns from India or wherever, so he told him not to have sex. Annabella was unhappy about this because when he left for the war, it seemed like they would get a divorce, but when he returned, he found that she was more than willing to try again. So there they were, trying again, and the director puts this on them. She complained to her best friend, Pat Boyer, Charles' wife, and Pat said, oh, he shouldn't pay any attention to that. That's what he (I think it was Edmund Goulding) told Charles when he did a movie with him.
So Annabella and Tyrone started having sex again, but Tyrone didn't mention it to the director. When it came time for Larry Darrell to return from his spiritual quest in the Himalayas, the director looked at him and said - YES - THAT'S IT - THAT'S THE LOOK I WANT!
|by Anonymous||reply 117||03/21/2012|
Since Anne Baxter said that character in Razor's Edge is identical to Tyrone Power, I wonder when Somerset Maugham wrote that character if he had Tyrone in mind and its based on Tyrone from the beginning?

I have been enjoying the Tyrone Power films on TCM this weekend. He was a very good actor who isnot given enough credit for his talent. There is no doubt he was also extraordinarily handsome.....no one can honestly compare. Such a sad loss at so young 44 years old.

I just finished watching A Yank in the RAF, which I taped from TCM on Tyrone Power day.
All I can say is, OMG. That man was to die for. By 1941, he had lost that boyishness, that beauty he had in the '30s and become HANDSOME. HE WAS PERFECT. He was so gorgeous I couldn't concentrate on the movie. The same is true of Johnny Apollo, I'm sure, which I haven't seen yet. That was made the year before.
Lucky Betty Grable, they had sex while working on the movie. There is a story about it but I've forgotten what it was.

He must have been barely legal age when he appeared opposite Norma Shearer in Marie Antoinette in the late 1930s.
I wonder why MGM didn't use one of their resident hunks for the role like Robert Taylor? Though to answer my own question, Ty was hotter than anyone at MGM in the 1930s.
