Psycho Prequel: Bates Motel TV Series at A&E

A&E is developing a TV series prequel to Psycho. Wait… what? Yep.

Bates Motel would focus on giving viewers "an intimate understanding of how Norman Bates' psyche developed from his childhood through his teen years." A&E's press release goes on to say that "Fans will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn first hand how his mother, Norma, and her lover damaged Norman, helping forge the most well-known serial killing motel owner in history." Yes, this ground was covered in Psycho IV: The Beginning, but obviously Universal (who are producers on the project) are looking to revive the Psycho franchise and start over. The last use of the property was in Gus Van Sant's critically-trashed shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock's beloved, iconic original film.

Bates Motel is described as being in "early development" at A&E, along with Those Who Kill, a remake of a Fanish series focused on serial killers and a police detective and profiler who hunt them.

There was a 1987 TV-Movie called Bates Motel that was intended as a pilot for a TV series that never got off the ground. That project was about a man who takes over the Bates Motel after Norman Bates and would have been an anthology horror series.
