Why You Shouldn't Give to the Salvation Army

A very thoughtful piece. Here's part of it:

Since 1986 the Salvation Army has engaged in five major assaults on the LGBT community's civil rights and attempted to carve out exemptions that would allow them to deny gays and lesbians needed services as well as employment.

When New Zealand considered passage of the Homosexual Law Reform Act in 1986, the Salvation Army collected signatures in an attempt to get the legislation killed. The act decriminalized consensual sex between gay men. The measure passed over the charity's objections.

In the United Kingdom, the Salvation Army actively pushed passage of an amendment to the Local Government Act. The amendment stated that local authorities "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship." The law has since been repealed, but it led many schools and colleges to close LGBT student organizations out of fear they'd lose their government funding.

In 2001, the organization tried to extract a resolution from the White House that they could ignore local non-discrimination laws that protected LGBT people. While the commitment would have applied to all employees, the group claimed that it needed the resolution so it "did not have to ordain sexually active gay ministers and did not have to provide medical benefits to the same-sex partners of employees." After lawmakers and civil rights activists revealed the Salvation Army's active resistance to non-discrimination laws, the White House admitted the charity was seeking the exemptions.

Also in 2001, the evangelical charity actively lobbied to change how the Bush administration would distribute over $24 billion in grants and tax deductions by urging the White House deny funding to any cities or states that included LGBT non-discrimination laws. Ari Fleischer, White House press secretary, issued a statement saying the administration was denying a "regulation sought by the church to protect the right of taxpayer-funded religious organizations to discriminate against homosexuals."

In 2004, the Salvation Army threatened to close all their soup kitchens in New York City to protest the city's decision to require all vendors and charities doing business with the city to adhere to all civil rights laws. The organization balked at having to treat gay employees equal to straight employees.

I've seen the discrimination the Salvation Army preaches first hand. When a former boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army insisted we break up before they'd offer assistance. We slept on the street instead and declined to break up as they demanded.

Instead of donating to the Salvation Army, choose a different charity that will help everyone without prejudice. Find a local secular charity - or here are some national organizations that provide help to anyone who needs it:

Goodwill (disabled and unemployed) The Red Cross (medical and emergency relief) Doctors Without Borders (medical and emergency relief) Habitat for Humanity (homelessness and housing)

Prepare for the right wing trolls, OP. we've had several threads about this recently and they infested all of then them for days.

by Anonymousreply 112/07/2011

The Salvation Army is a hate group under the guise of helping people. Like inner city drug lords, who hand out turkeys at thanksgiving.

Gays 'should die': A timeline of the Salvation Army's anti-gay flare-ups

An Australian Salvation Army major outrages gay-rights supporters — again — by agreeing that the bell-ringing-Santa charity thinks gays deserve to die posted on June 26, 2012, at 10:05 AM The Salvation Army may do wonders for the needy, but the Christian charity also has a troubled history of discriminating against gays.

Between the Salvation Army's bell-ringing Santas and thrift-store empire, people often forget that the international group "is actually a Christian church organization with many conservative tenets and a military-style structure," says Zach Ford at Think Progress. And recently, Maj. Andrew Craibe, the media relations officer for Australia's southern territory, reminded us of that fact by agreeing on-air with two gay radio hosts that the Salvation Army believes gay people "should die."

by Anonymousreply 311/26/2012

R1 is correct: every year this is posted here and incessant trolls descend on the thread to defend the SA. Brace yourself.

by Anonymousreply 411/26/2012

Vile anti-gay organization.

I don't even shop at retailers who allow these people inside.

by Anonymousreply 511/26/2012

No its not r5. I donate every year and feel great about doing so.

by Anonymousreply 611/26/2012

I saw this on Twitter last week and couldn't believe my eyes. I will never give to them again. I had no idea. >:(

by Anonymousreply 711/26/2012

I walk past those obnoxious bell-ringers as if they don't exist. Of course they'll never make an issue of it, but if they did I'd make sure the store management knew about it.

by Anonymousreply 811/26/2012

Never have supported either the SA or the Red Cross (several bad first hand experiences with the RC's mismanagement and awful treatment of people in desperate situations). There are so many other good organizations to support, why waste time on the ones who attach strings to their "charity"?

by Anonymousreply 911/26/2012

Right on cue, there's R6.

[quote]No its not R5.

Yes it is, R6. Have you read any of this thread? High ranking church officials (and it IS a church, not a charity) have said just months ago that gay people deserve to die.

It is a homophobic church, no different from the Southern Baptists, the Mormons or Fred Phelps' clan.

[quote]I donate every year and feel great about doing so.

Then you're either a clueless moron or a vile homophobe yourself. Are you gay, R6? Why are you here? You do know that Datalounge is a gay website, no?

There are many other worthy charities to donate to that DON'T discriminate, ostracize and attack gay folks. Support them, not the virulently homophobic SA.

by Anonymousreply 1011/26/2012

What do you mean "no it's not" r5, the proof is in black and white at r3's link. You're either a freeper or moron, probably both.

by Anonymousreply 1111/26/2012

R6 posted on the "Gay Porn Studio Head: 50 - 60% of Performers are HIV Positive" as R38:

[quote][R36], no one forced you to get AIDS you fucking slut.

by Anonymousreply 1211/26/2012

The Salvation Army, World Vision and Serving in Mission are all Evangelical Christian organizations, who are required to give a percentage of their take, to the World Evangelical Alliance.

The World Evangelical Alliance is one of the biggest enemies of the Gay community in the world. Spending millions every year to fight gay legal and benefits equality. They also are linked to African Churchs, who today, call for the death penalty for gays.

by Anonymousreply 1311/26/2012

Donating to the Salvation Army is the moral equivalent of donating to the KKK.

by Anonymousreply 1411/26/2012

I agree r14 but there's a DL regular who gets riled up at these threads every year and will talk defensively about the great things SA did for him/her.

by Anonymousreply 1511/26/2012

Please post a link to the "I will not donate to the SA because..." slips to put in the kettles - I would like to print some and distribute them to friends. Thanks

by Anonymousreply 1611/26/2012

[quote]there's a DL regular who gets riled up...

It's called trolling. Learn to ignore.

by Anonymousreply 1711/26/2012

They go back to street corner bands and trying to save drunkards.

by Anonymousreply 1811/26/2012

Salvation Army, Executive Director surrenders to Police this morning.

(Wow, it is time the police got involved with this terrible organization!)

by Anonymousreply 1911/26/2012

I've never given to the Salvation Army because I never give to ANY religious organizations.

by Anonymousreply 2011/26/2012

Send more Cops in to bust them up!

Wearing the Salvation Army uniform should be reason enough for arrest now.

by Anonymousreply 2111/26/2012

Even the trolls are bored by the old "Primetimers" club these days. Maybe you'll finally get some peace and quiet around here now that the "kids" have left. Happy holidays old fellas!

by Anonymousreply 2211/26/2012

Always amazed by freeper exhibitionism. They're like the neighborhood, crazy old retired guy who masturbates dramatically on his porch as the kids walk home from school. They point and laugh and keep walking.

by Anonymousreply 2411/26/2012

wow r23.

by Anonymousreply 2511/26/2012

Every year this is posted here: incessant braying trolls descending on Datalounge to vilify the SA. Brace yourself.

by Anonymousreply 2611/26/2012

"I've seen the discrimination the Salvation Army preaches first hand. When a former boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army insisted we break up before they'd offer assistance. We slept on the street instead and declined to break up as they demanded."

You'll have to come up with a better story than that, hon, because THAT is utter bullshit. I've gotten assistance from the SA. Did they ask me what my sexual orientation was before assisting me? No. Did they tell me that they cannot assist anyone who is gay or black or hispanic or non-Christian? No. Did they tell me "our policy is to refuse help to whoever we deem unworthy?" No. They just gave it no questions asked.

The Salvation Army insisted you "break up" before offering assistance! That is such an idiotic and blatant lie that it's pathetic. Like I said, you'll have to come up with a more believable lie than that, dear.

My thought is this: if you don't want to donate to the SA, don't do it. But don't stoop so low as to make up lies about it because of your sad, uninformed hatred.

by Anonymousreply 2711/26/2012

The Salvation Army is most certainly the villain as far as the Gay Community is concerned. We are using DL to educate others and stop the donations to this hateful and corrupt organization. One of many, many LGBT sites on the net, which do this every year.

Like the Salvation Army in Australia, which said this year, Gays should be put to death. Link.

by Anonymousreply 2811/26/2012

R6, R23, R26: why do you freeper trolls come here? What can you possibly gain?

So listen freeper trolls: all you do is fire the rest of us to believe more strongly in our opinions. Your foolish, freeperish comments remind us of what's wrong with the world, and you make us take more action than we might otherwise. Sometimes we forget how many of you idiots there are in this world, and when we're reminded, we do something about it.

So think about it next time you post. You're hurting your own freepishly stupid cause whenever you do, because you just make the rest of us more likely to do something to take you people down.

by Anonymousreply 2911/26/2012

and there she is, r27, right on cue.

by Anonymousreply 3011/26/2012

WTF is with these freeper trolls?

by Anonymousreply 3111/26/2012

Isn't it to the world's benefit that freepers demonstrate their outsized ignorance and flawed logic skills?

by Anonymousreply 3211/26/2012

Why hasn't the 'mos troll been banned yet?

by Anonymousreply 3311/26/2012

There are no nastier anti-gay posters on DL than those defending the Salvation Army.

When you see them collecting money at Christmas time, to fund the promotion of Evangelical Christianity world wide, we don't realize how angry they can become if they are ever questioned about the actions of their organization.

A real cult type mentality running this organization.

by Anonymousreply 3411/26/2012

R35, saying gays should be killed is so "amazing"!

by Anonymousreply 3611/26/2012

Religions, like the Salvation Army, use charity as an excuse to skim money off the top for their political promotion of Evangelical Christianity.

Charity happens all over the world, without organized religion taking a piece of the action for themselves.

Join the Humanists and stop Religion using charity as a revenue generator.

by Anonymousreply 3711/26/2012

R35, get cancer and die.

by Anonymousreply 3811/26/2012

The Salvation Army is an anti-gay organization. I don't care that they do charity, there are other organizations that do charity that aren't bigoted against who I am as a person.

No gay person should give to them.

by Anonymousreply 3911/26/2012

I wish Corporations (Like CTV/Bell Media) would stop promoting them.

by Anonymousreply 4011/26/2012

Also this inherent self-loathing that some gays still have is so sad in 2012.

Get it through your head that you deserve to be treated the same way as everyone else and not to be discriminated against. Period. We have to demand that from society or we will never get it.

by Anonymousreply 4111/26/2012

These trolls are the epitome of self-loathing, attacking fellow gays with homophobic taunts to "get bashed" while praising a group that actively discriminates and works to impede our progress towards equal rights. Sick people, these self-loathing trolls. Their lives must be hell to hold such crazy, self-destructive beliefs.

The Salvation Army is an evil, Christofascist cult. Boycott them and give to worthy charities like Goodwill or your local, gay-welcoming and affirming churches and synagogues.

And Webmaster, please ban these freaky trolls.

by Anonymousreply 4211/26/2012

Very few DL threads draw such crazy trolls as the seasonal "don't give to the salvation army" threads.

You are not changing any minds with your ridiculous posts. FYI....

by Anonymousreply 4311/26/2012

Most of the "Trolls" on this thread are the webmaster. Hits are way down on this broke ass site and a buck is, after alll, a buck.

by Anonymousreply 4411/26/2012

I'll join your boycotts when you join mine.

by Anonymousreply 4511/26/2012

As I recall, the whole "Salvation Army wants all gays put to death" crap stemmed from an interview with ONE SA official who was obviously confused and jittery. No wonder; he was being aggressively baited by a couple of rabid SA haters ("According to the Salvation Army, [gay people deserve death. So we should die."}

In response SA spokesman Salvation Army spokesman Major Bruce Harmer quickly released a statement distancing the organization from Craibe's "extremely regrettable" remarks, noting that members do "not believe, and would never endorse, a view that homosexual activity should result in any form of physical punishment."

Harmer goes on to note: "The Salvation Army believes in the sanctity of all human life and believes it would be inconsistent with Christian teaching to call for anyone to be put to death. We consider every person to be of infinite value, and each life a gift from God to be cherished, nurtured and preserved."

Jeffrey Curnow, the public and corporate relations manager for the Salvation Army had this to say about the accusation that the SA denies help to anyone due to sexual orientation, religious beliefs, etc.:

"I appreciate the opportunity to correct the record when it does come up. In fact, the Salvation Army serves countless people across the country every day from any variety of backgrounds, including gays and lesbians. This number probably reaches into the thousands, though it is impossible for us to determine, primarily because we would simply never ask about a person's sexual identity. Because The Salvation Army is a church we do have theological positions on a variety of topics. These positions are intended for our church members or those who are interested in our church. Just as you wouldn't expect everyone you meet to share all your ideas or beliefs, we would never expect everyone we help, our donors, or even our non-church-member employees to necessarily agree with these theological positions."

by Anonymousreply 4611/26/2012

"And Webmaster, please ban these freaky trolls."

So you want to "ban" anyone who does not share your beliefs? I'd say that's pretty fascist, you despicable bastard. Go fuck yourself.

by Anonymousreply 4711/26/2012

I repeat:

SA-defenders -- you are changing no minds here.

by Anonymousreply 4811/26/2012

Dude relax, We know what you're doing and we're all doing what we can to make you a couple of pennies. Maybe you should go to "Primetimers Club" to calm your nerves.

by Anonymousreply 4911/26/2012

Right back at you, R47. Just go away. You aren't wanted here and don't belong. Go find a church that shares your homophobia and see how welcome you are there, too.

Better yet, seek help for your extreme self-loathing and whatever it is that drives you to such attention-seeking behavior as trolling gay websites professing support for homophobes and hate groups. Maybe there's a sliver of hope that you'll one day recognize your delusions and come out as a well-adjusted gay person.

by Anonymousreply 5011/26/2012

Agree with r35. Let's please stop the religion bashing - especially around this holiday. It's so utterly offensive to so many of us who come here for fellowship and good feelings. It's disgusting. I respect your beliefs about the SA. I need to research that because I've never heard that they were homophobic and I know so many gay people involved with the SA. So I suspect this is some form of anti-religious propaganda meant to smear the SA but I will definitely do mu due diligence. But the other anti-religious comments need to stop PRONTO. There are people of Faith on this board and you need to respect us or leave. It's that simple.

by Anonymousreply 5111/26/2012

Coming to DL for fellowship & good feelings? Queen, please.

by Anonymousreply 5211/26/2012

[quote] But the other anti-religious comments need to stop PRONTO. There are people of Faith on this board and you need to respect us or leave. It's that simple.

Piss off you stupid Christer.

by Anonymousreply 5311/26/2012

The Salvation Army is a Hate Group.

by Anonymousreply 5411/26/2012

Like all religion it's a financial scam.

by Anonymousreply 5511/26/2012

America Blog just posted its comment on the Salvation Armys bigoted leadership.

"Homosexual activity is as rebellion against God’s plan for the created order…. Homosexual practice, however, is, in the light of Scripture, clearly unacceptable. Such activity is chosen behaviour and is thus a matter of the will. It is therefore able to be directed or restrained in the same way heterosexual urges are controlled. Homosexual practice would render any person ineligible for full membership (soldiership) in the [Salvation] Army."

by Anonymousreply 5611/26/2012

What on EARTH is going on here? r51 is either a genius troll or mentally ill.

by Anonymousreply 5711/26/2012

I was hoping they had changed in light of the recent elections. Don't you all feel sooo guilty just passing by the bell ringers? I know I do.

by Anonymousreply 5811/26/2012

[quote]so many of us who come here for fellowship and good feelings

This poster is clearly a plant, ie a troll. No one comes here for "fellowship (which is blatant churchspeak) and good feelings". It's a gay gossip website. People come here for snark, entertainment news, TV recaps and porn links.

This is a gay, liberal website. Go away if you don't like it. You clearly don't fit in.

by Anonymousreply 5911/26/2012

[quote] It's a gay gossip website. People come here for snark, entertainment news, TV recaps and porn links.

You forgot in-depth analysis of Golden Girls episodes and fights to the death over who will win Best Supporting Actress.

by Anonymousreply 6011/26/2012

"Fellowship"? "Good feelings"? Are you insane? This isn't church. There is no fucking way you are a real DLer.

And yes, the SA-defending trolls need to be banned. They ARE plants clearly connected to SA. We had this same problem last year.

by Anonymousreply 6111/26/2012

Datalounge is very popular on google searches. That is why it draws homophobic trolls - P.R. agents and SA "enlistees" alike. It's also why you get straight men posting on the "why I like pussy" thread - because they googled "why I like pussy" and Datalounge was the first thing that comes up.

In addition, all stars and minor starlets have their own names on GoogleAlerts.

I truly don't understand why this is always so hard for DLers to grasp.

by Anonymousreply 6211/26/2012

If you type "the name of a celebrity/organization" and "homophobic" into the Google search, a link to a Datalounge thread will be on the first page of hits. It's no wonder that trolls coming here to taunt or shills doing damage control are drawn to this place.

by Anonymousreply 6311/26/2012

The SA-defending trolls were exactly like this last year; mostly clueless and sounding nothing like real DL posters. Anytime the thread was bumped they'd come out of the woodwork in droves, just like cockroaches. From November through January it was a constant onslaught of the most trollish, SA-defending posts.

Then the thread ran its course and winter turned to spring. The SA was forgotten. But sometime in the summer someone bumped it for some reason, and it stayed fairly active for a few days. Multiple posts from real DLers, rightly slamming this homophobic cult. Time after time it was bumped onto the front page of DL. Not a single post, out of dozens of new, summertime entries, defended the SA. Seems like the trolls go dormant on the off season. Maybe SA doesn't pay them year-round.

They are obvious plants, which just shows the dishonesty and dirty tricks this "Christian church" is capable of.

by Anonymousreply 6411/26/2012

Fuck the poor!

by Anonymousreply 6511/26/2012

Kill the gays and spread lies while you're at it!

by Anonymousreply 6611/26/2012

The executive director for the Toronto Salvation Army has been arrested for stealing more than $2M in toys from the organizatioo.

(For those who didn't click on r19's link.)

The SOB makes more than $100k/yr. but he has to steal from poor kids at xmas. How do these weasels always seem to find their way to positions of power and access?

by Anonymousreply 6711/26/2012

"Just go away. You aren't wanted here and don't belong"

I'm sure that's been said to many gays and blacks and Jews; anybody who has ever been discriminated against because of what they are or believe. You have the mentality of a Nazi. You're very sick and pitiable. I think it's safe to say that everybody who knows you hates you. No doubt the holiday season is very painful for you, friendless and alone as you are.

by Anonymousreply 6811/26/2012

They also support the people who are making a lot of money, building prisons. Prisons for who? We already have more prisons then any other country because of our really goofy war on drugs.

by Anonymousreply 6911/26/2012

Help the unfortunate without forcing them to declare their belief in the Sky Faeries. Why do Jesus freaks always think non Jesus freaks are incapable of charity?

Non Jesus freaks do not attack gays, do not treat women like second class and citizens do not sexually assault children and then cover it up, unlike the Jesus freaks, who have a long and documented record of doing exactly these things.

Until the world bans all organized religion, people will continue to pay a terrible price in human suffering.

by Anonymousreply 7011/26/2012

I won't give to any organization that imposes its ridiculous religious views on the people it claims to be helping. Help should be offered without any strings.

by Anonymousreply 7111/26/2012

by Anonymousreply 7211/26/2012

Exactly R71. My mother was a devout (and quite openly critical) Catholic who was involved in several charitable organizations. She always said there was a difference between charity work and missionary work. Missionary work dispenses help and aid in return for a receptiveness to proselytizing. Charity is given for its own purpose and requires nothing in return from the recipient.

by Anonymousreply 7311/26/2012

Good Lord, R68, give it a rest. You are becoming unhinged. You sound insane.

by Anonymousreply 7411/26/2012

R26/R27/R46/R47/R68 is too precious and nasty to bother much with, except for its pleading for exquisite accuracy on one hand and then yelling about people being fascist and Nazis on the other. A true stooge, yes, but a practiced and hateful one.

The point, cunt, is that the Salvation Army (Army, note), is homophobic. At this gay site, most gay people find homophobia appalling, and sensibly prefer to aim their charitable activities to other organizations. The fact that this historically and willfully naive and simplistic sect is homophobic is not overridden by its "good deeds." Not supporting gay equal rights is inherently wrong. The fact that homophobic organizations are not always calling for gay people to be killed is hardly a defense on the principles of the group.

But your frothing yip is so offensive, I do wish you'd consider leaving, fucking off, dropping dead, eating shit, or whatever other activity would put some distance between you - a demented cunt - and the rest of us - wounded, odd, damaged though we be. Decent gay people deserve better company on their own turf than the likes of you.

by Anonymousreply 7511/26/2012

Pull their tax status.

by Anonymousreply 7611/27/2012

by Anonymousreply 7711/27/2012

bumping to annoy the crazy.

by Anonymousreply 7811/27/2012

Shame on Miller.

Jodie should withhold sex.

by Anonymousreply 7911/27/2012

R68 sounds like exactly the type of unhinged lunatic the ARMY loves. Go man the kettle you demented freak and leave us alone.

by Anonymousreply 8011/27/2012

They pay to have people man the kettles around here. I don't believe any of it is voluteer. Salvation Army isn't as popular around here.

We have a huge population of Jehovah Witness. I don't like them (gays are sinful!!) but they do voluteer to put roofs back after a hurricane. That's a good thing.

by Anonymousreply 8111/27/2012

I will never donate to them again. I just give my money to a food bank, when I have any money.

by Anonymousreply 8211/27/2012

"But your frothing yip is so offensive, I do wish you'd consider leaving, fucking off, dropping dead, eating shit, or whatever other activity would put some distance between you - a demented cunt - and the rest of us - wounded, odd, damaged though we be. Decent gay people deserve better company on their own turf than the likes of you."

You don't even realize what you're saying, do you, you poor pathetic deranged lost soul. You sound exactly like right-wing extremists ("freepers" they are called here) who divide people into "us" and "them." All that shit about "the rest of us" and "decent gay people"...shove it up your ass, you judgemental moronic prick. You are the epitome of bigotry, prejudice, ignorance; you're cut out of the same piece of mentally-disordered cloth as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell. And Hitler. Your deformed mind is exactly like theirs. Now, fuck off and die why don't you? I'm sure it would make a lot of people happy if you did. And take the retard at R80 with you; you both have a lot in common, that is, you're both retarded misfit assholes with shit for brains.

by Anonymousreply 8311/27/2012

A good time to mention Godwin's Law. When someone makes the inevitable Hitler comparison...they are desperate and losing. You are ridiculous troll.

You (obviously) can't come up with a logical non frothing argument why gay people should give money to a bigoted organization. Just give it up.

by Anonymousreply 8411/27/2012

[quote]You sound exactly like right-wing extremists ("freepers" they are called here) who divide people into "us" and "them." All that shit about "the rest of us" and "decent gay people"...shove it up your ass, you judgemental moronic prick.

This, from someone who supports a homophobic group that does exactly that: divide people and discriminate.

With each post you sound more ludicrous, more hypocritical and more deranged. Nothing you post makes any sense, considering that the heart of your argument is support for a homophobic church and smearing and slandering anyone who doesn't share your support.

by Anonymousreply 8511/27/2012

I've worked with a few people who were in the Salvation Army. It's very weird, not like "I go to New Life Baptist church" but "I'm in the Army."

Their pastors are called Colonels, average churchgoers are Soldiers, they salute each other, they have to give tons of money to the church (more than a 10% tithe), and there is a huge amount of wife-swapping and affairs.

There are so many other places that deserve your philanthropy much more.

by Anonymousreply 8611/27/2012

On the one hand, it seems 100 percent clear that the Salvation Army is at heart an anti-gay institution -- not surprising, given its religious roots -- and therefore should not be supported in any way.

All the more reason why ridiculous claims such as "When a former boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army insisted we break up before they'd offer assistance" are deplorable and counter-productive. I simply don't believe that ever happened. When there so many factual examples of the SA's anti-gay stance, there's no need to make things up -- and it's harmful to do so, because some people will think, "Since this guy is obviously lying about that incident, his general claims that the SA is anti-gay must be untrue."

by Anonymousreply 8711/27/2012

R87, you really should have some evidence before you start calling people liars.

Your admittedly simple belief is not very compelling nor a good factual counter-argument.

by Anonymousreply 8811/27/2012

[quote]I simply don't believe that ever happened.

Why not?

by Anonymousreply 8911/27/2012

Why don't I believe it ever happened? Because as heavily anti-gay as the SA is, I just can't believe any of their representatives would be SO blatant about it as to tell a gay couple, "We'll only help you if you break up." Even is one of the SA people would have the nerve to say that to someone's face, I'm pretty sure they'd avoid doing so if only because of the potential for terrible P.R. fallout.

In what context was this statement supposedly made? Did the person who claims it happened report it to anyone at the time or call a newspaper or blog or magazine to publicize the incident? Did he contact GLAAD?

Of course, I can't say without a doubt that the claim is false. There are so many incredible things said by so many people these days that's it's conceivable even this outrageous statement was actually made by a SA representative. But it does sound highly unlikely to me, and even though the organization is unquestionably hateful for its homophobia, I just don't think it's policy for them to go so far as to say to a gay couple, "We'll only help you if you break up."

by Anonymousreply 9011/27/2012

Look, R90, your belief is your belief. It's hard to argue with that. You provide no facts, only your feelings. So here are my feelings -- I feel it's extremely credible that, when faced with a gay couple in need, a Salvation Army worker would feel entirely comfortable saying something like, "Of course we'll help you, but we can't help you as couple. You'd have to be treated like any of the single people we help. We'd provide housing for you as two separate, single people, but not as a couple."

I feel that is entirely credible. You don't. We're even.

i am fond of r91.

I am fond of R91.

I'm not. He sounds like an insufferable douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 9311/27/2012

R83 et al. I understand what I said, and I certainly understand you - by sound and smell. Fuck away from here, you homophobe.

by Anonymousreply 9411/27/2012

I heart R91 also.

R6/35 is the catholic church lover on this thread:

by Anonymousreply 9611/27/2012

great catch r96!

by Anonymousreply 9711/27/2012

Maybe our resident SA defender is a closeted priest.

by Anonymousreply 9811/27/2012

America is full of anti-gay people defending bigoted organizations. The Salvation Army, is just the one of the hour.

by Anonymousreply 9911/27/2012

I"m done with the SA, even though they gave my father a roof over his head as a child, after he was abandoned by his father. he spent a few years in one of their orphanages, or whatever they are called.

I've tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but i can't anymore. I'm sick to death of christians and their crap.

by Anonymousreply 10011/27/2012

"Of course we'll help you, but we can't help you as couple. You'd have to be treated like any of the single people we help. We'd provide housing for you as two separate, single people, but not as a couple."

R91, even if that was said -- which I doubt -- it's not the same as saying, "We'll only help you if you break up."

by Anonymousreply 10111/27/2012

close enough.

by Anonymousreply 10211/27/2012

I want to videotape myself or a pal deliberately knocking over one of those SA pots, but make it look like an accident.

by Anonymousreply 10311/27/2012

Has anyone ever spoken to the bell ringers, explaining why they won't get your money? I am curious. The ones around here seem to be a little down on their luck and likely not very clued into these issues...

by Anonymousreply 10411/28/2012

The Bell Ringers are like zombie cult manikins.

Go to the store manager. Get the facilitators.

by Anonymousreply 10511/28/2012

They are often lagabouts.

by Anonymousreply 10611/28/2012

Stephanie Miller just spent the first 20 minutes of her show back-tracking, and pulling support for TSA. She said she hadn't done her research and found out the SA is virulently anti-gay. She is donating all money raised instead to the Trevor Project.

by Anonymousreply 10711/28/2012

that is GOOD news and shows the power of social media again.

by Anonymousreply 10811/28/2012

Is Goodwill ok? Because I just gave them carloads of stuff when I moved.

by Anonymousreply 10911/28/2012

yes, goodwill is good.

by Anonymousreply 11011/28/2012

Call your local LGBT center. Sometimes LGBT charities can sell the goods to auction houses and get the money.

by Anonymousreply 11111/28/2012

How stupid is Stephanie Miller to not have known about this? She really must be an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 11211/28/2012

At least she apologized and LEARNED.

True idiots never apologize.

by Anonymousreply 11311/28/2012

better thread

by Anonymousreply 11511/28/2012

They #1 mission of the Salvation Army is to promote the fictional character known as Jesus Christ. That says it All!

by Anonymousreply 11611/28/2012

Jodie's girlfriend got way too much flack for the SA support. I noticed people attacking her then confessing to never hearing her show. I don't support the SA but the attacks she got was way over board. I applaud her mea culpa because she could have ignored it.

by Anonymousreply 11911/28/2012

Apologizing is the very least stupid cunt Stephanie Miller can do. She has a representative come on the show to deny they're anti-gay, and then only after getting a bunch of flack about it, does she bother to get on Google and find out why they're being accused of it. Oh poor, poor Stephanie, how dare anyone give her any flack.

by Anonymousreply 12011/28/2012

Relax r120. She made a mistake, she apologized. What's the point in calling her names and getting so angry?

by Anonymousreply 12111/28/2012

She apologized because she got caught, she hadn't anticipated it become a big story on the gay blogs. The apology was damage control. I'm sure she's more pissed at the gay blogs than she is at SA.

by Anonymousreply 12211/28/2012

She seems too dumb to have her own show even on radio.

by Anonymousreply 12311/28/2012

Is every apology just damage control to you r122?

by Anonymousreply 12411/28/2012

dang, r122!~

by Anonymousreply 12511/28/2012

Another Bimbo apologies. World wonders how Bimbos keep getting these jobs?
