How do I extract my Microsoft Office product key from my computer?
I'm getting a new hard drive for my laptop because the old one is corrupted (or something like that).
However, I can't find the Microsoft Office product key that I used to install Microsoft Office way back when. And of course I don't want to have to pay for Microsoft Office all over again when I get the new hard drive.
When I asked the tech guy at Best Buy if they have a way to get the product key off of the computer, he said, "WE can't get it because it's illegal... but YOU can..." But he didn't have specific advice on how to do it other than to find methods by Googling.
Does anyone know a reliable way to do this that works and won't give my computer a virus or something?

Open Word. HELP - ABOUT - Write down the key # in the window.

Throw that shitty software and the computer that runs it in the garbage, get a Mac, and load iWork on it.
Better computer, better software, and you'll have a better life, including your sex life.

It should be in the registry. At the Start button, click on Run and then type regedit.exe and then hit enter. On the Registry Editor (be care not to make any changes), look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SOFTWARE and then Microsoft and then Office. Once you do all that, on the right window, you should see the key although I'm not sure what it might be labeled as (it might say userkey or something similar). When done, just close Registry Editor.

Does anyone have knowledge about or experience using any of the Product Key Code Finding programs in the r6 link?
My ex loaded Office on my laptop a few years ago so now that he's gone I don't have the software discs or any of the registration info. Now I got a pop-up message saying that I can open Office twenty more times but I'll need to enter the product key code to keep using it after that.
So I'm thinking about using one of the programs in the R6 link to retrieve the code, but I'm not the most computer savvy and worry about downloading unknown programs onto my computer.

Not Sure if it still works the same way, but I used to use Belarc Advisor before replacing a hard drive. It pulled a list of every program and it's install key.
Then I'd print out the results and use that to re-install everything.

1) Open Word or Excel. 2) Click "File" in Menu Toolbar 3) Click "Help" 4) Locate Product ID

If you are too stupid to hold on to a key, you're too stupid to work a computer.
It's like how 'mos are are stoooopid, they get infested with a disease that is 100% preventable.

Why the hell would you need Office for Mac? [sic: "Mac for Office"]
iWork can read and save to every Microsoft Office Suite program.

Not OP but I was curious and finally found "About" with Word that came with Office 365. There is no product key there. There is a product ID. I checked it against my product key. It isn't the same number, not even close. I doubt if the product ID will get you back your Office. You need the key.
That said, a hint. Costco allows you to return open software...just sayin'

Unplug the machine, turn it over, and shake vigorously and the key should pop out.
Otherwise you have to call Jane at Microsoft in India and she will tell you 'no key'.

I broke down and bought Office 365... the latest and greatest versions of the ENTIRE office suite, PLUS the Online/web-apps and tons of Skydrive (now OneDrive) space... for $99.
Totally worth it.
Oh yeah, and you can install the apps on up to five devices for that price.
Yes, you have to pay $99 every year, but even so, it still works out as a huge benefit, imho.

Click the Microsoft Office Button (Button image) and then click Options at the bottom. Click Resources, and then click About tap. a window will open with the product key. this is listed in the help search (Locate Product ID)
|by Anonymous||reply 28||03/13/2014|
that last post w/ office button, options, resources, about gives you the factory product ID not the product key. Try abelssoft.net/mykeyfinder.php It gave me all product keys on computer, even programs I deleted.
