Shocking images of Gabby Giffords recently released show the shot congresswoman during the darkest moments of her miraculous recovery, scarred and bruised in a hospital bed.
The snapshots are part of an upcoming ABC News interview - Giffords' first since the shooting - with Diane Sawyer, set to air November 14.
The Arizona congresswoman survived a bullet to the brain during the January shooting in Tuscon, Ariz., when a gunman opened fire on a crowd outside a grocery store, killing six people and injuring twelve.
Giffordsâ husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, sat down with Sawyer in mid-January, just days after the shooting.
Giffords and Kelly also grace the latest cover of People magazine, featuring excerpts from the coupleâs new memoir, âGabby: A Story of Courage and Hope.â
In the heartbreaking tale, Kelly describes with painful detail one of the hardest moments during the recovery - when he saw his panicked wife hyperventilating in her wheelchair.
âShe motioned with her left hand, waving it by her mouth,â he wrote. âIt didnât take me long to figure out what was wrong. She had tried to speak but she couldnât and just figured out she was trapped.
âHer eyes were as wide open as Iâd ever seen them and the look on her face was of absolute fear.â
The couple also revealed they were trying for a baby before Giffords was shot, suffering wounds doctors didnât know if she would survive.
The book will be in stores November 15.
