Joe Paterno: Republican

Now, it all makes sense...

Paterno is a political conservative and a personal friend of former President George H.W. Bush, endorsing the then-candidate in a speech at the 1988 Republican National Convention.[54] Paterno was also a close personal friend of President Gerald R. Ford.[59] In 2004, his son Scott Paterno, an attorney, won the Republican primary for Pennsylvania's 17th congressional district but lost in the November general election to Democratic incumbent Tim Holden.[60]

We're fortunate that OP has such an intense interest in this subect and takes the time to keep everyone up to date.

Obviously not all sex offenders are Republican, but they do claim to be the party of family values, so they should be held to higher standards.

And I think one of the issues here is whether this guy had powerful political influences that protected him from being held accountable.

So I'm glad the OP raised it.

He's an old rich white man with power (until this week.) What else would he be?

by Anonymousreply 511/10/2011

Given all the trolls who show up on DL accusing our community of being pedos, this is a relevant point.

by Anonymousreply 611/10/2011

You are full of shit OP.

r3, it's national news, if you are naware.

r7, facts are facts. Feel free to counter with similar facts re: Democratic politicians/high-level supporters.

I'm a PSU alum, love PSU sports (our wrestling and gymnastics programs are also aces), but I lost total respect for JoePa when he said that Michael Dukakis wasn't fit to carry George HW Bush's shoes. Bush41: evil CIA Director, Iran-Contra traitor, sire of Dubya.

Thanks, Oh Great Judge of Men.

If Paterno is a pedophile or supportive of them, then that must mean that Obama is a terrorist or supports them. Oh wait, thats a bad analogy, because the first isnt true.

[quote]Obviously not all sex offenders are Republican, but they do claim to be the party of family values, so they should be held to higher standards.

I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous, if only because of its counterimplication that Democratic politicians *shouldn't* be held to higher standards. ALL elected officials are, and should be, subject to the same standards when it comes to sickening acts like child molestation. Really, the same should be said for EVERY American, politician or not. In Paterno's case, there is not yet any conclusive evidence that he purposely protected, Catholic Church-style, one of his main lieutenants from arrest. His political ideology and personal relationships with politicos are, in this case, completely irrelevant, unless you're trying to argue that he used these connections as part of a cover-up.

And no, I'm not a Republican or a Penn State supporter/fan.

by Anonymousreply 1101/26/2012

When it comes to "moral" issues that are not illegal, such as adultery, illegitimate kids, divorce, legal stimulands, porn, etc., those that talk big about "virtue" should damn well be held to the standards they espouse.

As for Paterno, he showed the true face of Republicanism, in his willingness to sacrifice the welfare of a child to protect the establishment.
