Ben Cohen: Straight People Don't Get It
October 16, 2011
Rugby superstar turned equality activist Ben Cohen says that a lot of straight people don't get why he's fighting antigay bullying and discrimination, in a new interview with NBC Miami.
Cohen, who is straight and the 10th highest point scorer in England rugby history, retired from the sport to create the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, which raises awareness for the long-term effects of bullying. Cohen says he was inspired to create the foundation after his father was killed trying to break up a fight in a nightclub.
Cohen reveals, "A lot of straight people have asked, 'Why are you doing this?' I just explain that it really is just to break down stereotypes. I knew I would be able to speak to both the gay and straight community and maybe reach a few different groups of people. I just want people to know that how you treat others is how you should want to be treated yourself. Random acts of kindness are simple."
Coehn was honored last night by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force at their annual recognition dinner at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.

He says his family isn't Jewish.
Not that it's relevant to the matter at hand . . .
|by Anonymous||reply 2||10/16/2011|
Never knew that about his dad. He's my favorite man, straight or gay
|by Anonymous||reply 4||10/16/2011|
I'm pretty sure he's a Jew.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||10/16/2011|
R3, perhaps he is benefitting from developing a gay fanbase, but based on the videos I've seen him do he seems genuinely sweet and concerned about protecting gay kids from suicide.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||10/16/2011|
He's not Jewish. He told Andy so on WWHL a few months back.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||10/16/2011|
Did he imply he was uncut?
|by Anonymous||reply 9||10/16/2011|
R3 is 100% correct. Whenever he travels his expenses are all paid by the groups he appears with (HRC, National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, etc.) and they always go out of their way to wine & dine him. So what does he have to lose from speaking out? His teammates might joke around with him, but he's straight so what does he care? I think his relationship with gays is exploitive.

Jesus Christ, this topic comes up every other month. Regardless of his last name, Ben says he and his family are not Jewish even if a long ago relative may have once been. The family is not Jewish. Period.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||10/16/2011|
R3/10 are correct. I also believe the same of Cyndi Lauper.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||10/16/2011|
R10, as I said above, he may get a benefit out of it, but he genuinely cares and is a positive role model.
We need more straight celebrities who do this, particularly jocks/athletes that straight guys will pay attention to.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||10/16/2011|
You people are really pathethic.
He's a Jew!! (like there's something wrong with that)
He's exploiting us!!
Bitter, nasty fucking queens.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||10/16/2011|
He's never asked me for a single dime. I wish he really would exploit me and drain me of my assets, night after night.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||10/16/2011|
R15, if he says he isn't Jewish - he isn't Jewish. I think he knows more about it than we do.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||10/16/2011|

That's pretty standard for celebrities.

Ben Cohen, shirtless in underwear:
|by Anonymous||reply 20||10/16/2011|
r18 - I should have used quotes. I wasn't screaming "He's a Jew!!"
I could give a rat's ass. I just hate these people who by response 10 of every thread, manage to work in something about someone being Jewish. WTF difference does it make? Oh, unless you hate Jews....
|by Anonymous||reply 21||10/16/2011|
Well, even if he is doing it for the bucks, there's plenty of gay/ lesbian activists who make a living of their activism. I think he's genuine though, and even if the main motivation really is money, I don't think it is the only motivation, and it still makes a difference.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||10/16/2011|
Keep in mind he developed a gay fanbase by posing shirtless and selling official merchandise through his website. That idea was the brainchild of his wife, who's his manager. If he were ugly or black or Asian, his support wouldn't mean anything to most of the dumbasses who lovingly eat up his bullshit.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||10/16/2011|
Cyndi Lauper is the same damn way. She only placates to us so she can still have an audience of some kind show up to hear her "sing."
Don't even get me started on Annie Lennox, Barbra and Liz Taylor!

It's not his bullshit I want to lovingly eat up, sour- missy.

r14 needs to do the world a favor, and just die already. Geez.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||10/16/2011|
Why? Some of what R14 says is correct
|by Anonymous||reply 27||10/16/2011|
OMG, R3 is so right. Cohen is racist jail-bait.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||10/16/2011|
Thanks R23, I really thought I was the only one who thought this.
This guy, along with Hudson Taylor, are making so much money off of gay civil rights, it's really disgusting. They are using their "hot" factor to make $$$, and self-loathing gay men are eating this up. And, they are making TONS of money. Going on CNN, fancy award benefits, etc. That's sick.
If these two cared about this issue so much, they wouldn't make a dime off of this, and they would hold regular jobs. They shouldn't be, to be quite honest. They should take note from Linus Pauling. If they did, I would have nothing but respect for them. R23, is exactly right. They found a way to get fame, and make money. Ben Cohen offered a shirtless calendar for crying out loud.

Obviously they are celebrities who thrive off self-promotion. However they are still doing some good by being a straight male who completely embraces and stands with the gays. I consider it a good thing.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||10/17/2011|
Ah yes, "those gays". I need a straight guy to convice people I'm acceptable. I have news for you, you are acceptable.
I, and you, do not need a "hot" straight guy convincing people we are anything.
He's doing nothing, other than filling his bank account. It's not a good thing, it's an exploitive thing.

R31, this doesn't bother you? I hope so.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||10/17/2011|
Is Ben the gay messiah? I always thought he would be, you know, gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||10/17/2011|
I Love him more than anyone
|by Anonymous||reply 36||10/18/2011|
Cohen doesn't nothing for the gay community. He simply shows up, and demands cash. He was able to give up his job, because he knew gays would write him checks. Expect a beefcake calendar, and then a porno to "help" the gay movement via Ben.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||10/18/2011|
[quote]He simply shows up, and demands cash.
Funny, because he came to my son's school to speak and run rugby sessions for free.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||10/18/2011|
What R32 said.
And straight people who insult straight people without irony sound like the straight women who say they're "gay men on the inside". Some straight people don't get it, that's for sure.
But some do (without making money off the GLBT community), so he's full of bullshit.
I tend to be much more appreciative of the efforts of activists who do NOT get rich from the work they do.

Played but not too much
Most naysayers are just jealous of the attention

In the IRS return for his foundation in 2011 (the only one filed to date), 88% of the money given to his foundation was spent on administration, only 12% on projects. This included a salary of over $66 000 for his wife which was 52% of the foundations income. This was justified by stating in the return she worked 35 hours a week for 10 months - in order to issue less than $15000 of grants to anti-bullying projects. So she was paid over $4 for each dollar of grant money she distributed. It is also very difficult to find out where the profits from his branded goods go - not all of the money is paid to the foundation, but his organisation does not allow the figures to be made public. He is a parasite on our community, pure and simple.

He is a guy who realized he could have another career being a pinup and spokesman for gay causes. If you thought it was something more than that I consider it your mistake R43. He isn't some hero, just a dumb athlete who loves the gay attention.
