"Hold me, David. I''m scared."

Where is that from? I don't get it.

by Anonymousreply 5308/07/2013

It was a line uttered at the end of an episode of One Day At A Time by the main character, Ann Romano (played by Bonnie Franklin), after her boyfriend David leaves her. Bonnie Franklin often did this simultaneous laughing-while-crying thing that was very campy, and she did it in this scene.

by Anonymousreply 108/27/2011

I don't know, but it's always attributed to Ann Romano/Bonnie Franklin, so I would guess "One Day at a Time". But you never know with the freaks around here.

by Anonymousreply 208/27/2011

It's Bonnie Franklin as Ann Romano from ONE DAY AT A TIME doing her best to be a liberated woman who is brave but appealingly vulnerable in the face of peril.

Isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 308/27/2011

I forget the original context, but basically when Ann (Bonnie Franklin) said it to her boyfriend David (Richard Masur), she was saying, "The outside world is a scary place I cannot control; hold me so I at least feel secure in your arms."

It's become a standard DL line when the Nervous Nellies start in with the apocalyptic scenarios.

by Anonymousreply 408/27/2011

The original context was that her boyfriend had just broken up with her. She was sitting alone in a dark room, talking to herself while laughing and crying at the same time, and ended the monologue with "Hold me David... I'm scared..." Fade to black.

by Anonymousreply 508/27/2011

I usually cry out for Auntie Em. But then the wicked witch bursts in with her famous "I'll give you Auntie Em, my pretty! (wicked laugh)"

by Anonymousreply 608/27/2011

That sounds... dreadful, R5.

by Anonymousreply 708/27/2011

Eldergay stuff.

by Anonymousreply 808/27/2011

Ann Romano = the one person you would LEAST want to hold, even in a dark room.

by Anonymousreply 908/27/2011

I think it has something to do with Bonnie Franklin.

by Anonymousreply 1008/27/2011

It was a line from "Who's The Boss?" when they spoofed a musical. Katherine Helmond, as Mona, had just met a man named David when an earthquake struck while they were shopping in a Ben Franklin store. She said, "Hold me, David, I'm scared." As soon as the snaking stopped, he began to sing "I found a million dollar baby in a five and ten cent store" and they went into a tap-dance routine.

by Anonymousreply 1108/27/2011

Yes, I remember this. Wasn't this early on?

I remember Julie's boyfriend Max....always thought he was so hot!

by Anonymousreply 1208/27/2011

Didn't Tea Leoni say "Hold me, daddy, I'm scared" to Maximillian Schell at the end of DEEP IMPACT?

by Anonymousreply 1308/27/2011

No no no, you're all wrong.

It was from that Very Special Episode where Ann was gang raped by those friends of Julie's who had stopped by to "watch the Jerry Lewis Telethon".

by Anonymousreply 1408/27/2011

Was it Bonnie Franklin?

by Anonymousreply 1508/27/2011

Weird. For some reason I remember her actually clutching Richard Masur while uttering the line. I thought there was a riot or something going on outside. Maybe she said it more than once?

by Anonymousreply 1608/27/2011

Why is there no youtube video of this moment?

by Anonymousreply 1708/27/2011

[quote]Weird. For some reason I remember her actually clutching Richard Masur while uttering the line.

You're right: she was. r5 is either being funny (and I don't get the joke) or misremembering it.

by Anonymousreply 1808/27/2011

Is she the one with the famous lady ham?

by Anonymousreply 1908/27/2011

That season is on Hulu or Crackle. I watched them all, but don't remember that line.

by Anonymousreply 2008/27/2011

Wasn't it after Julie ran away to live with Chuck in his van, and Ann Romano couldn't convince her to come back?

by Anonymousreply 2108/27/2011

[quote]Eldergay stuff

You're not getting any younger, princess.

by Anonymousreply 2208/27/2011

The beauty is that younger generations will live longer than any humans ever. You bitches are going to get very, very old, in an unstable, fucked-up world. Enjoy! The world is your polluted, corrupt oyster!

by Anonymousreply 2308/27/2011

I thought it was after Florida smashed the glass bowl and in the Romano nabe they were gearing up for riots.

by Anonymousreply 2408/27/2011

Is this another Eldagay thread?

by Anonymousreply 2508/27/2011

Is this the same episode where Natalie and Tootie brought home a bong from the head shop?

by Anonymousreply 2608/27/2011

It's from the Bible, OP. Goliath said it to David after the condom broke.

by Anonymousreply 2708/27/2011

No it's the one where Natalie gets ass raped by a blind man.

by Anonymousreply 2808/27/2011

I always thought Ann's mushroom hairdo looked like the head of a penis.

by Anonymousreply 2908/27/2011

If someone can remember what episode it's from, and it's from the first season, I have those episodes on DVD and I will upload the clip to YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 3008/27/2011

You're a peach, r30. I just wish I could remember...

My vote would be the Julie runs away episode.

by Anonymousreply 3108/27/2011

I just posted something to a One Day at a Time message board (yes, that's a thing), so hopefully we can find out the episode origin of this favorite DL quote.

by Anonymousreply 3208/27/2011

God, I must be drunk tonight, but this is yet another DL thread I absolutely adore.%0D %0D It's got everything, including bizarro left turns like R23.%0D %0D Carry on, ladies!

by Anonymousreply 3308/27/2011

R23's post is a modern classic.

by Anonymousreply 3408/28/2011

Didn't Julie run away a few times?

by Anonymousreply 3508/28/2011

Yes, R22, but no matter how old we get, we will ALWAYS be younger than you.

by Anonymousreply 3608/28/2011

God will get you for that, Walter.

by Anonymousreply 3708/28/2011

Even if we can't see this particular clip, a clip showing the laughing/crying trope would be most appreciated. I definitely remember that being a "thing" in my '80s childhood.

by Anonymousreply 3808/28/2011

I remember an episode of Love Boat where a lady said "Hold me, Gopher" to Gopher. My sister and I annoyed our parents my repeating it for the next six months.

by Anonymousreply 3908/28/2011

I was almost certain it was from "2001, A Space Odyssey."

by Anonymousreply 4008/29/2011

I'm tapping as I type!

by Anonymousreply 4108/29/2011

what's not to love, bitches?

by Anonymousreply 4210/10/2011

[quote]Didn't Julie run away a few times?

With a mother like that, wouldn't you?

by Anonymousreply 4310/10/2011

by Anonymousreply 4403/01/2013

No it's not. It is from the film Artificial Intelligence (A.I)

The mechanical teddy bear says it to Haley Joel Osmond (David).

by Anonymousreply 4503/01/2013

Is this scene on YouTube? If it is, I can't find it.

by Anonymousreply 4607/08/2013

NPH says it to his spouse before each event he hosts.

by Anonymousreply 4707/08/2013

by Anonymousreply 4807/08/2013

This is what I vaguely remember.

The ODAAT episode concerned the impending wedding of David and Ann. Towards the end of the episode Ann realizes that she's been using David as a crutch and confesses this to him; it becomes clear to David that Ann does not really want to be his wife. Trying very hard not to break down in front of her (he's precariously close to tears) he mumbles some parting words to her and leaves; as he leaves she's whimpering "David...I love you."

She sits in the living room (it's NOT "dark"). The camera is focused on her face; she seems on the verge of a mental collapse. She's kind of laughing, but her eyes are glazed with tears. She gulps "I'm scared. I'm scared."

And that is how "David, I'm scared" really played out, at least from what I can remember.

by Anonymousreply 4907/08/2013

I watched that episode live and thought it was when she had the cancer scare, but I could be wrong.

by Anonymousreply 5007/08/2013

All Tea Leoni's character says to her father is "Daddy?" before they get wiped away by the tidal wave.

by Anonymousreply 5107/08/2013

Close, R49

I found the link. She says "I love you David. I'm scared." After he walks out of the apartment for good.

Igt's at 3:47 of the video.

by Anonymousreply 5208/07/2013

You all have this wrong. It's a bible verse from I Samuel after Jonathan slay a gang of Philistines, he was comforted by his friend David. I think this was just before Jonathan stripped off hit robe and gave himself to David. But they were just friends...nothing funny going on there.
