Was Katharine Hepburn Gay?

I always heard that rumor. Was it ever substantiated?

by Anonymousreply 11804/12/2015

I seem to recall that, after Hepburn's death, biographer Anne Edwards acknowledged that she thought Kate was gay, but wasn't allowed to say it in her book about the actress.

by Anonymousreply 503/30/2011

I think I read in Lauren Bacall's autobiography that whenever she and Humphrey Bogart were with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, they would never talk about their relationship. They were apparently all close friends, but that subject was off limits.%0D %0D So if she was lesbian what was the deal with Tracey?

by Anonymousreply 903/30/2011

that sounds very true r11 - I get the same vibe from those later Hepburn books. The ones in her lifetime were all whitewashes, including her own.

by Anonymousreply 1203/30/2011

bump

by Anonymousreply 1303/30/2011

I seem to recall that Kate claimed that she had no idea what men could possibly do to each other in a sexual way. Someone carefully explained it to her and she expressed utter shock and horror that stuff like that happened. I believe it was in the Anne Edwards biography. The impression was that she didn't believe there was such a thing as homosexuality. The thing is she was maybe in her 40's when all this took place. Unless I'm remembering it wrong.%0D %0D She always struck me as being asexual.

by Anonymousreply 1503/30/2011

Asperger's, asexual and reclusive, R8? No. We're just Yankees. Short answers to stupid questions, not flaunting sex partners and not being photographed at the opening of the envelope would be another way of looking at it. She very well may have been bi or gay, but your post isn't working.

by Anonymousreply 1603/30/2011

Funny that he whole public persona was "Fuck it, I don't care what thy think", when its clear she cared so deeply it informed all of her decisions.

by Anonymousreply 1803/30/2011

[quote]Also, no one here has mentioned it, but Tracy is often said to have been a gay man.%0D %0D We don't always mention everything. For example, it's Wednesday.

by Anonymousreply 1903/30/2011

No she wasn't a lesbian. Who comes up with this ridiculous shit?

by Anonymousreply 2003/30/2011

The William Mann bio is very good, and has the most in-depth exploration of Hepburn's sexuality to date. While Mann believes that she had some relationships with men that were romantic and sexual -- such as her relationship with Howard Hughes and, in the beginning, her relationship with Spencer Tracy -- he implies that she was more gay than straight. Hepbur is known to have had several passionate, intimate relationships with women, some of whom she lived with. It's not know for certain whether these relationships were sexual but it seems likely that they were.

A. Scot Berg's book also has some interesting anecdotes concerning Hepburn's sexuality. (According to Berg, Hepburn's friend Irene Mayer Selznick believed Hepburn was a lesbian and actually caught Hepburn in a compromising position with a young woman).

Re: Kate and Spencer Tracy -- their relationship began as a romance but after a while the sexual part apparently died out and it really became more of a friendship, with Hepburn taking on the role of caretaker of the ailing, alcoholic Tracy. According to Mann, Tracy had a penchant for rent boys and was tormented about this. He and Hepburn genuinely cared for each other as friends, but there's also a sense in which they bearded for each other so each could pursue same-sex relations with other people.

by Anonymousreply 2103/31/2011

Do you think there would ever be an actress capable of sufficiently portraying Katharine in a movie about her life?

Anyone we know today strike you as capable? I'm not seeing it, but you all know more than I do about these things.

by Anonymousreply 2203/31/2011

Maybe Kate Mulgrew...

by Anonymousreply 2303/31/2011

I actually read her biography ME where she addressed lesbian rumors and denied them...She also denied that her brother committed suicide so who the f---k knows but I will say this...She wasn't allowed to Spencer Tracy's funeral by his wife and neither did she ever acknowledge while he was alive that they were lovers I think it's just as possible they were both just repressed OR MAYBE THEY LOVED EACHOTHER???

by Anonymousreply 2403/31/2011

Some people want to believe that there are as many closeted lesbian actresses as there are gay male ones, but the facts are that there are many, many closeted gay men in Hollywood and very few lesbians in this particular industry. Acting, like the fashion industry, attracts a disproportionate amount of MEN who are gay, not women.

Now Wimbledon on the other hand . . .

by Anonymousreply 2602/16/2012

Kate Hepburn VIBED! I know about her famous relationship with Spencer Tracy, only, surprise!!!He vibed, too!!!

by Anonymousreply 2710/18/2012

LOL, R20.

"She always struck me as being asexual."

Yeah, right. That's what they always say. My 80 y/o mother calls gays "neuter."

Funny, R1, but Lena was all hot for Ava Gardner at the time. It wasn't until she was in her 60s that she went with skinny pasty white women like Hepburn.

by Anonymousreply 2810/18/2012

A very funny lesbian anecdote:

Hepburn was very friendly with Martina Navratilova and her LT girl friend, Judy Nelson. Upon hearing of their break-up (Navratilova dumped Nelson), Hepburn contacted Judy. Judy reported that Kate wrote her a long letter and tried to keep up the friendship -- she was HITTING on Nelson, but Nelson was too new to her newly single lesbian status to get the hints.

by Anonymousreply 2910/18/2012

They didn't live together, oh frighted homophobe, r25.

by Anonymousreply 3010/18/2012

Lick, Lick, Lick.

by Anonymousreply 3110/18/2012

I've always thought Hepburn was more gay than straight, as well as her contemporary Barbara Stanwyck. 'Coming out' was not something that was even in their vocabulary. We're talking about people who were born in the early 1900's for christ's sake! It was just a totally different generation and time period. For people of that era, if you had same-sex feelings, you kept it very quiet and presented a heterosexual persona to the public. That's just the way it was.

by Anonymousreply 3210/18/2012

[quote]Acting, like the fashion industry, attracts a disproportionate amount of MEN who are gay, not women.

Don't forget bisexuals of both sexes.

by Anonymousreply 3310/18/2012

I dunno...just looking at her, the way she talked and walked...always screamed lesbian to me. One of my favorite films is SUMMERTIME and I just can't get the hetero vibe from her falling for uber hunk Rossano Brazzi.

by Anonymousreply 3510/18/2012

"Tracy had a penchant for rent boys and was tormented about this. He and Hepburn genuinely cared for each other as friends, but there's also a sense in which they bearded for each other so each could pursue same-sex relations with other people."

I can believe that Tracy and Hepburn had a serious involvement that stopped being sexual, if it ever was sexual. Hell, that's true of a great many relationships and marriages. I can also believe that Hepburn had other lovers, perhaps female ones. I can also easily believe that Tracy was gay and liked rentboys.

However, I don't see their relationship as one of bearding for each other. Tracy already had a beard.

His wife!

by Anonymousreply 3610/18/2012

[quote]It's a good book- read it.

Full Service by Scotty Bowers. Some people don't believe him, but I do. I grew to like Scotty as I read along. He loved sex and was a busy little prostitute his whole life. As far as stirring guests' drinks with his dick, no thanks.

by Anonymousreply 3710/18/2012

Scot Berg is an unusual man. He spent so much time with Hepburn...at times it seems every weekend in Connecticutt even after she was not doing well mentally. Was he a loyal friend, or someone who knew there was a best selling book as a result of their relationship?

by Anonymousreply 3810/18/2012

How is it possible that in 2012, decades and decades after hepburn and Tracy were HUGE international movie stars, recognized the world over, there can be not a shred of undeniable proof of either's homosexuality?

Just simply a reliable witness coming forth or a recovered love note or an uncompromising photo or something?

And I say this as someone who believes that both people were at least bisexual if not homosexual.

How are such secrets so well-kept?

by Anonymousreply 3910/18/2012

R39, the sexual heyday of Tracy and Hepburn happened eighty or ninety years ago, and you can bet they were discrete at the time. Their lovers are old or dead, and at the time they knew that writing descriptive love letters or taking the wrong sort of pictures could destroy their fabulous careers. So I'm not surprised there's no "proof" now.

But that's celebrity gossip for you. Unless someone's stupid enough to make a sex tape, there's never any proof of anything.

by Anonymousreply 4010/18/2012

We took uncompromising photos that were well-publicized and it never hurt us!

by Anonymousreply 4110/18/2012

She looked great in slacks in "The Phildadelphia Story."

Maybe women who were definitely gay noticed and came on to her. After a while, she might have figured it out.

by Anonymousreply 4210/18/2012

I wish celebrities would go back to being discreet about their affairs. I'm tired of their skanky sex tapes.

by Anonymousreply 4310/18/2012

According to the Mann biography, Kate's great love was Laura Harding.

by Anonymousreply 4410/18/2012

R21 I don't know if Spencer was into rent boys but he was reportedly into womanizing, boozing and an ugly drunk. My impression is he and Hepburn were in love although he was unfaithful even to her. She herself was a modern woman, with liberal parents, in a liberal industry. Marriage wasn't necessary to her as it's not to a lot of women today.

Considering that he has been described as an abusive drunk by peers and was arrested several times for disorderly conduct, I doubt he was easy to be around when he was bingeing.

But I have definitely known supposedly independent women to take way too much shit from men and stay devoted to them. Way too many. I think that is a possible scenario.

by Anonymousreply 4510/19/2012

The Hollywood industry was tightly locked back then with not that much scandalous stuff becoming public knowledge. Yes, people talk, but nowdays people go 'link to proof or shut the fuck up!'.

by Anonymousreply 4610/19/2012

R45, you view is dated, something my 80 years old mother would say -- in 1970 and in 2012.

Jeez, some of you guys are just so afraid of this. You have once married, had many girlfriends, George Clooney as gay/bi based on "rumors," and you get all in denial about Katharine Hepburn and ask for proof.

by Anonymousreply 4710/19/2012

I hate it when our corn fed sisters decide to start threads.

by Anonymousreply 4810/19/2012

R45, Tracy was not into women, he used male escorts/prostitutes, alot. This has been pretty well described by the guy who set up the men for him, as well as women for Hepburn. He was Catholic and would not divorce his wife- he was supposedly consumed with guilt over all this which was probably one of the sources of his alcoholism.

He and Hepburn were friends- mostly on account of her devotion to him- and that devotion was as a caretaker and sympathizer. They would hole up in a cottage on George Cukor's estate. Tracy's marriage was in name alone. He was devoted to a handicapped son- more reason for guilt.

You should read the Mann bio of Hepburn. If it is even half true, the above is accurate.

by Anonymousreply 4910/19/2012

Dated? I think it's narrow to still think all women fall into cliches, when in current society women live vastly different lifestyles than their ancestors. Or that obvious things like alcoholism doesn't effect relationships. Or believe that biographers can't get away with saying a "source" "told them" or "speculates" like tabloids do all the time. I don't see Clooney who seems to date one bimbo after the next the same as Tracy. And Tracy's affairs were probably cleaned up back in the day. I don't say that I know one way or the other what KH's orientation was but it sounds like the author had an agenda.

Having said that, I haven't read the book so maybe that'd change my mind.

by Anonymousreply 5010/19/2012

The agenda of a good biographer is to get to the truth about their subject's life. I think that was Mann's goal and i think he got as close as anyone. Hepburn herself was not at all about telling the "truth" of her life, rather presenting an image that would serve her career, at all stages of her life, best. And she did that very well. Mann captures this "truth" about Hepburn quite well, without judgement and even a little admiration.

by Anonymousreply 5110/19/2012

R45, 50 = Dated, in denial just like a geezer that likes to say, "you think everyone is gay!!!"

by Anonymousreply 5210/19/2012

Im going to buy the Mann bio of Hepburn.

by Anonymousreply 5310/25/2012

Many years ago, my mother was visiting the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. Into an otherwise empty gallery swept Katharine Hepburn, then starring in a Boston play, followed by a few well-dressed female companions. Hepburn was lecturing them pedantically about art, obviously used to being the center of attention. Suddenly she spotted my mother, who at the time was a slim, dark-haired, blue-eyed beauty from Smith College, and fell silent. My mother was stunned to find herself eye-to-eye with someone she had watched for years on the silver screen. The star's eyes bored intensely into hers, as if they were the only people in the room. After an awkward silence, Hepburn turned away and resumed her oration, the group dutifully following her into the next gallery.

My mother was cruised by Katharine Hepburn.

by Anonymousreply 5411/30/2012

She must've been bisexual to put up with alcoholic Spencer Tracy all those years or he was a Hollywood beard.

Cynthia McFadden is adopted. She befriended Hepburn and became executor of her estate. Her son's name is Spencer. She strongly resembles Kate Hepburn to me too.

by Anonymousreply 5511/30/2012

Yes, Hollywood was on lock down back then. Not a scandal got out. If they could hide Rock Hudson all those years they were GOOD!!!

Liberace sued and won against a magazine for calling him gay yet he was flaming. They bearded him with a female ice skater. Such lies. Ugh!

John Travolta's past lovers don't seem to be fazing his career, his wife or him so people are getting use to it. What a life to live. Kelly must have some sort of agreement. I'm sorry but I couldn't be with a gay or bisexual man. No way!!!

by Anonymousreply 5611/30/2012

"Tracy was not into women, he used male escorts/prostitutes, alot. This has been pretty well described by the guy who set up the men for him, as well as women for Hepburn. He was Catholic and would not divorce his wife- he was supposedly consumed with guilt over all this which was probably one of the sources of his alcoholism."

I suppose "the guy" you're referring to is Scotty Bowers. Of course you realize that Scotty Bowers has no proof whatsoever to back up his claims, that you have to take his stories "on faith", don't you?

And of course you realize that Mann's biography is full of inaccuracies and sheer speculation on his part, don't you?

John Curtis did a recent biography of Tracy, very thorough and researched. In the final chapter he does quite a good job of discrediting both Bowers and Mann. Perhaps you should read it. It would clear up a lot of things you assume simply because Bowers and Mann said it.

by Anonymousreply 5712/01/2012

r,54.

I don't even care if that's not true. It was beautifully written. I believe you.

by Anonymousreply 5812/01/2012

Is it so out of bounds TO CONSIDER that they may have been both been bisexual.Tracy as an mean drunk apparently and I doubt Kate was a walk in the park to deal with either. They could have found much easier people to beard for them if they wanted to. Bisexuals are not unicorns we do exist.

by Anonymousreply 5912/08/2012

Yes, for sure. Read Darwin Porter's "Katharine the Great"

by Anonymousreply 6001/25/2013

How gay was Hepburn? SO gay that her first and only husband, nicknamed "Luddy,' was a gay man living with his longtime lover. He was obsessed with Hepburn, and she married him as a beard. Their "honeymoon" consisted of 4 people-Hepburn, Luddy-and his and her female lovers.

Tracy and Hepburn were both bi-sexual. But Hepburn wanted to protect Tracy's image, and her own-which is why she has put out books and even documentaries about "her life with Spencer." In reality-their "affair" lasted only about a year. The rest of the time she was his caretaker, period-

Of all the men in her life, the only one she really loved in a romantic and sexual was was director John Ford.

by Anonymousreply 6101/25/2013

r48 = bitchy, yet hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 6201/25/2013

Well, there were a series of photos posted earlier today of her having lunch with FDR, but maybe the real reason she went there was to meet Eleanor afterwards . . .

by Anonymousreply 6301/25/2013

"Tracy and Hepburn were both bi-sexual"

I don't know about Hepburn, but Tracy was not definitely NOT bi-sexual. In fact, he was a womanizer, and his relationship with Hepburn didn't change that. The only people who say Tracy was into cock are types like Darwin Porter, Scotty Bowers and William J. Mann, none of whom are even remotely credible.

by Anonymousreply 6401/25/2013

To #68:

It's much easier for people to accept that woman are bi-sexual, or gay-than it is to deal with the fact that male icons are bi or gay. But, the truth is that Spencer Tracy was one of the best concealed bi-sexuals of all time! My opinion is that Tracy was gay, and screwed women because he felt so guilty after screwing his male co-stars, rent boys, and especially the underage teen boys that he and gay pal George Cukor screwed together!

I think Tracy was gay because he beat the shit out of female prostitutes. Almost killed quite a few. MGM hushed it up, of course. Tracy had to be strait-jacketed many times: it was hushed up, of course. But he was much nicer to his boyfriends. He was extremely cruel to Hepburn. Why she stood by him I don't understand-expect because of the guilt she felt over her young brother's suicide.

Sexually? Kate liked very strong men-like John Ford, Hemingway-and Howard Hughes. and Tracy. But of all this group, John Ford was the ONLY ONE who wasn't majorly bi-sexual/gay. Since Kate was pretty gay herself, she accepted it.

Laura Harding, yes-was her friend/lover all her life. But to Laura's extreme displeasure-Hepburn was not the "marrying kind."

by Anonymousreply 6501/27/2013

Response to #53: Re: HEPBURN and ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

Eleanor was gay, and fell madly in love with Hepburn. Hepburn admired the first lady enormously-but had no interest in her romantically or sexually. ER pursued Hepburn with romantic letters, and they saw each other on occasion-but that was one Sapphic love that was not reciprocated. Poor Eleanor!

by Anonymousreply 6701/27/2013

To #64, AGAIN

Excuse me-but clearly you have NOT read any of Darwin Porter's books if you think he is an "unreliable writer." His sources are incredible. He personally knew half of old Hollywood himself, and those he didn't know, he got personally stories about from firsthand sources. Porter is the author of 30 years of "Frommer's Guides..." the most highly respected travel books ever! Just because Porter is gay himself, and writes "from a gay POV," is no reason to call him a suspect writer.

Check him out on Wikipedia! I mean-the man was close friends of Tennesee Williams, Cole Porter, Clifford Odets! The top writers of all time. If you don't believe what these guys say-who ARE you going to believe? The people who say that all celebs are pure and true and only do it missionary style?

Helen

by Anonymousreply 6801/27/2013

#61 must be Darwin Porter . The honeymoon story has been ccnclusively refuted . Laura was in another country at the time .

by Anonymousreply 6909/29/2013

I don't care about her sexuality. She was so wonderful in Sabrina.

by Anonymousreply 7009/29/2013

Thank God for Darwin Porter!

by Anonymousreply 7109/29/2013

I read the William Mann book, and though there is tons and tons of smoke, no one comes right out and say it.

by Anonymousreply 7209/29/2013

Hepburn and Tracy had a cottage on the George Cukor estate, maybe where Tracy died, so they must have been aware of George's fabulous Sunday afternoon pool parties with lots of pretty boys and escorts hanging around ...

Tracy also seems to have befriended young Robert Wagner, who was in 2 films with him (they play brothers in the 1956 The Mountain, where boyish Wagner looks like a teenager, and the then ailing Tracy looks like his grandfather). I bet R.J. could tell a few stories ...

by Anonymousreply 7309/29/2013

[R25} [R64]

William J. Mann is not in the same category as Darwin Porter. But if you do not believe him, look at Scott Berg's bio of Kate. Berg is one of the most respected biographers working today. His bio's of Max Perkins and Goldwyn are definitive and his new biography of Woodrow Wilson shows that he is not an everyone-is-gay gossip monger.

by Anonymousreply 7409/29/2013

R56 is a nasty homophobe.

by Anonymousreply 7509/29/2013

"Tracy also seems to have befriended young Robert Wagner, who was in 2 films with him (they play brothers in the 1956 The Mountain, where boyish Wagner looks like a teenager, and the then ailing Tracy looks like his grandfather). I bet R.J. could tell a few stories ..."

R. J. related a number of juicy stories in his autobiography, unfortunately none regarding Tracy's sexualty.

He did write of walking in on Errol Flynn receiving a blow job from a starlet in his dressing room . . . awkward, but hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 7609/29/2013

LOL! @ R31

by Anonymousreply 7709/29/2013

As I have posted in here frequently over the years, one of our friends was one of Cukor's boys. George told him Hepburn and Tracy were both gay and never had sex. Tracey was a drunk and deeply conflicted about being gay. He has told us the same story for almost 35 years and I have never doubted him. Our friend became famous in Hollywood and Southern California for a short period of time because of his work. He had many stories to tell of real things that had happened to him and the people he knew. No, his name was not Scotty.

by Anonymousreply 7809/29/2013

#78 - your friend told you that Cukor told him that both Tracy and Hepburn were gay - well maybe they were neither straight nor gay but somewhere in between - maybe both of them were bisexual since both of them had relationships with the opposite sex . Tracy had an affair with Gene Tierney and Ingrid Bergman and he was known to use female prostitutes - Hepburn was jealous of Bergman ... Laura Harding believed that Hepburn had a sexual relationship with Tracy - she never liked him. So there is some evidence for him not being completely homosexual.

As for those who believe that Tracy's drinking was due to his homosexuality - he suffered from life long depression and his son was both deaf and eventually became completely blind - that would be a major source of stress - enough to make most people drink

by Anonymousreply 7909/30/2013

Tracy also had a deep affair with Loretta Young back in the early 30s when they did Man's Castle - they may have been the loves of their lives. Loretta had that fling with Gable afterwards which resulted in the baby she adopted, then she got religion. Both she and Tracy were Catholics married to other people so their romance could not be ... in those days.

by Anonymousreply 8009/30/2013

I can believe either one was gay but I don't understand why Spencer Tracy would need a beard if he was married with half a dozen kids. His relationship with Hepburn was never officially a romantic one until after his death.

Also there was a part in 'The Aviator' where pictures of Tracy and Hepburn are found in bed together. Hughes prevents Tracy from being blackmailed with them, because it would create such a scandal if people knew they were lovers. Does anybody know if that's just made up for the movie.

by Anonymousreply 8109/30/2013

It was completely made up but Hepburn did have a relationship with Hughes. A lot of what you read is made up . I laughed out loud when Scotty Bowers claimed that Hepburn and Tracy were hassled when they went dancing at the Coconut Club and were dining in restaurants. It never happened - Katharine had a phobia about restaurants and they wouldn't have been caught dead in the Coconut Club or any other club for that matter

by Anonymousreply 8209/30/2013

"George told him Hepburn and Tracy were both gay and never had sex"

Do you mean they never had sex with each other, or never had (gay) sex, or sex, period?

by Anonymousreply 8309/30/2013

Re: Bowers book. I have a friend that was an entertainment reporter in L.A. for years. When the Bowers book came out, I expressed doubt at some of the revelations it contained. He told me "Look, I've worked in that town in the industry, and from what I know and from what I've seen, I can tell you I believe EVERY WORD." That's enough for me, because he would know.

by Anonymousreply 8409/30/2013

I read Bowers' book and I cannot find one reason why he would lie or make up any of this. At his age, I believe he is now close to 90, he could care less. Besides that just about everyone he wrote about is dead; therefore you won't hear any closet cases suing in court (as in Travolta and Cruise)or have a press conference to deny it.

by Anonymousreply 8509/30/2013

My friend meant that they never had sex with each other.

by Anonymousreply 8609/30/2013

My guess is that she was a lesbian who never practiced lesbianism.

by Anonymousreply 8709/30/2013

ok, thanks, R86

I think she practised!

by Anonymousreply 8809/30/2013

[quote]My guess is that she was a lesbian who never practiced lesbianism

HAHAHAHA

And why not?

I can't believe people are so goddamn clueless.

by Anonymousreply 8909/30/2013

R89, how come and you believe that Hepburn practiced her lesbianism? You have those...clues?

by Anonymousreply 9009/30/2013

Practice make perfect. And she was a perfectionist.

by Anonymousreply 9109/30/2013

I doubt that R84's "entertainment reporter" friend is the be-all and end-all when it comes to accurate information about the intimate sex lives of famous people.

As for Scotty Bowers...well, he's a liar. He has no credibility at all. He cannot substantiate ONE single thing in his incredibly ludicrous book, has no proof to back up anything he says. You just have to take his story on "faith", just the way Christians do when they read Bible stories about talking snakes and rivers turning to blood and dead people brought back to life some poor guy who had to live in the belly of a whale for a while.

Why would Bowers "lie" at this late date? You're never too old to want money and fame. But the primary reason he's waited this long to spill his guts about the supposed fuck habits of all the closeted homosexual/lesbian movie stars of Hollywood's golden age is to avoid litigation. ALL of the people he tells nasty tales about are conveniently dead and buried. Dead people can't sue. That is the reason why he's waited this long to tell his slimy stories.

Does anyone REALLY believe that Bowers had "threesomes" with "Eddie and Wally", more commonly known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor? I sure don't. Wallace DID have a very close "friendship" with a gay man, but it was Jimmy Donahue, heir to the Woolworth estate and cousin of Barbara Hutton, not Scotty Bowers.

Wallace Simpson no doubt would have considered the troll-faced gas station attendant Scotty Bowers not good enough to spit on. And it's safe to assume that Katherine Hepburn would have felt the same way.

by Anonymousreply 9209/30/2013

"I read Bowers' book and I cannot find one reason why he would lie or make up any of this. "

A comfortable old age is very expensive, genius.

by Anonymousreply 9309/30/2013

For those who believe that everything Scotty Bowers wrote was gospel truth I will give a small example of where he got it wrong . Howard Hughes - he claimed that Hepburn and Hughes never had a sexual relationship because Hepburn had bad skin and Hughes never would have slept with her . Well in the 1920's and the 1930's Hughes was mentally well (not perfect) and he slept with any woman that had a pulse . Starlets, famous movie stars, Ginger Rogers. All of Hepburn's biographers and friends including William Mann agree that they had a sexual relationship . So Scotty's memory is faulty or he has read too many books to jog his memory (he is nearly 90) or he is speculating on what he knows nothing about. The latter is my guess . Ditto for the Hepburn claim about restaurants - its something that was so fundamental to who she was that she had anxiety problems . And he claimed to be her friend for over 50 years.

by Anonymousreply 9409/30/2013

I agree with R92 about Bowers and his book, but do not believe that Hepburn was completely straight, either.

by Anonymousreply 9509/30/2013

yeah, but what kind of a tree is gay?

by Anonymousreply 9609/30/2013

Who let all the stupid people in?

by Anonymousreply 9809/30/2013

As if Kate Hepburn would need a gas station attendant to procure women for her!

The very idea is ludicrous. If she was gay or bisexual, there were other women of the same ilk throughout the studio system that she could turn to with more discretion than a gas station attendant who was known all over Hollywood as a notorious pimp.

by Anonymousreply 9909/30/2013

Totally agree, R99.

His book is accurate and his story is true. I knew of it all in the 1970s when I was in my early 20s. He was one of the most popular, fun and nice people on the inside Hollywood social and party circut of his time. Everyone loved him- he did much more than arrange hookups and run a gas station.

Hepburn and Tracy were never lovers- Tracy used men all time set up by Bowers. Hepburn was probably bisexual although the fellow who wrote "Kate" her bio of a few years back (can't remember his name- he wrote the recent early career bio on Streisand) seemed to think sex with women was her preference while she would get emotionally involved with men.

R92 does not know what he is talking about- Bowers WAS the most discrete "arrranger" in Hollywood. He did a lot more than arrange sex for others discretely. He bartendered, he took care of getting kids to school, he did errands... and he himself was active with both sexes. He did not "charge" for his sex arrangements- but he did for his other services- although those who hooked up with Cukor, Tracy etc probably were paid. Hell, Tracy stayed in Cukor's guest house for a reason. He could drink and have sex as he wanted. He did not live with his wife.

I get a kick out of Wallis Simpson looking down on Bowers as 92 suggests. She was a common as an American can get- no money, no special pedigree. She was merely an adventuress who hooked one of the biggest royal fools of all time. If ever there was a person who sold herself- it was Wallis Simpson.

Hi, Scotty Bowers!

#101 . Tracy was living on the Cukor property because it was private - he was friends with Cukor and Hepburn arranged it so they he could have better place to live than the Beverley Hills Hotel . There was an excellent biography written on Cukor about 20 years ago and it was pointed out that Hepburn and Tracy did not attend the men only parties that Cukor arranged - maybe Tracy went once but he was very reclusive and Cukor didn't see him for weeks at a time . He didn't move in there for the sex otherwise he would have been at every one of Cukor's parties

Have you seen her talk, walk, and most importantly- think? A textbook lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 10409/30/2013

I don't think most posters here are questioning Kate's homosexuality. They're questioning Scotty Bowers' relationship with Kate.

Noel Coward in his diaries and letters talks about her relationship with Tracey. It reads like a real relationship but at the same time Hepburn would often vacation with Irene Dunne at Coward's Jamaican home. She probably swung both ways but had a deep attachment to Tracey that transcended the rest.

Hepburn was gay = get the fuck over it.

It's utterly hilarious that people believed the shit in Scotty Bowers' book. Even I, lover of all things grotesque - from movies to literature to death hag sites - was completely repulsed by Bowers' trashy, scatological tell-all. He was clearly a senile, DIRTY OLD man with an attention whore streak a mile long. That his filthy ramblings were allowed to go into print is a travesty. I mean, Charles Laughton enjoyed shit sandwiches? Even the ridiculous Kenneth Anger wouldn't come up with crap like that in his most demented moments. Only the most far gone gossip queens would use Scotty Bowers as a legitimate source for determining sexualities of Hepburn & Tracy. The great Katherine Hepburn used to use gas station attendants to procure female prostitutes? ROTFLMAS!

I don't know, but I don't believe Scotty Bowers as a lot of his stuff has been disproven or debunked. And his stories about Hepburn are ridiculous and in some cases incorrect. He obviously just plain didn't like her.

She stopped speaking to Garson Kanin after he wrote that book about her and Tracy. I know Tracy used to travel with her because my acting teacher worked with her in As You Like It in Connecticut and Tracy came with her.

I think it may be correct that they started out lovers and ended friends. Also if he was drunk all the time how much sex could he have had? Either they can't cum or they can't get it up, in my experience, but maybe that's not so for everyone.

There was a real love there, sexual or not.

She was so gorgeous in her prime, and classy. Her voice was sexy. I wish there was a lesbian actress like her now.

Tyrone Power was blasted as an in closet homosexual. It's easy to smear folks once they're dead. Often people project their inner fantasy taboos regarding their own clandestine wishes. In her generation she could never have said anything regarding being sexually involved with women or not. Such were the times-she would have lost everything. She may have been a maverick thought she was wise enough to realize the 'do and don't rules of her generation. She had her biography in print by the 1990's-if she were a homosexual (or part time homosexual) she could have had that in print by 1994. In her 90's she wouldn't have cared. By 1994 everyone would have said-'So What'! She was a proclaimed atheist-so she stated in her late 80's. In the 1930's, 1940's for her to have stated she was an atheist would have been career suicide.

She could have been bi, but leaning towards long-term relationships with men.

Scotty Bowers revealed all about the Kate and Spence charade in his 2012 book, Full Service. Basically, it confirmed rumors I heard in the industry for decades. My response, "So what?" Does Kate's preference (or that of any other talented person) alter their art and craft in any way? No. I'm heterosexual but in terms of my craft - there is no relationship to it.

Gore Vidal spent his life telling the truth, no matter how painful. He said that Scotty Bowers' book was true. Believe it.

by Anonymousreply 11401/02/2015

The Bowers book is just unbelievable on so many levels. Cukor was a snob as well as a prissy old queen. He would have kept his distance from a character like this. Mann is a lazy writer and his books don't stack up to more meticulous ones like Donald Spoto's early work. I would give more credence to Berg.

I rather doubt that Tracy had much of a sex life with anyone, esp. toward the end with his drinking and health problems.

by Anonymousreply 11501/02/2015

I can see why Cukor had to pay for sex, as ugly as he was.

by Anonymousreply 11601/02/2015

Yes I was.

by Anonymousreply 11704/12/2015

And skilled.
