Eichlers. I love them.

Anyone own one? Are there many outside of California?

What is one?

by Anonymousreply 102/11/2011

Are they marshmallow coated or chocolate covered?

Love them too, OP. I didn't know that Eichler even built outside of CA. If you're a real estate porn addict like I am, you'll appreciate the link. A friend in Florida who has been trying to get me to move there found it and sent it to me. 1959 post and beam designed by a known Sarasota School architect. The kicker? It's only 289K. I know, I know it's Florida, but how much would this be in CA?

I think those may even be original St. Charles cabinets. SWOON.

Cool '50s houses with interior courtyards or atriums. Heated slab floors. Usually 4 bedrooms. A friend has one and it's the coolest house I've ever seen.

He looks like he was sort of inspired by the Usonia houses of Wright.

The ones near me are in the 700s I think. They were in the 800s and up at the peak.

Here's a gallery of Eichlers in Southern California.

The bedrooms aren't very big in Eichlers, but the design is certainly unique.

And the originals had all sorts of rules attached - they could only be painted certain colors, for instance.

On the east coast we have Eichmanns.

I grew up in an Eichler in the in one of the big Bay Area subdivisions. My parents bought it in the late 50's. I've been in Eichlers in San Rafael, Walnut Creek, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, and Oakland hills. They seem anything but cool to me.

I am so over bursting floor pipes, high utility bills, the smell of roof tar on a hot day, E-Z Care landscaping with Junipers and bamboo... and especially the fucking 'burbs.

Damn, thought they were chocolate chip cookies.
