Sterling Hayden

Was he the Ken Ryker of his day?

by Anonymousreply 2401/15/2014

An Adonis who could act. Tortured by his friendly testimony to HUAC.

Johnny Guitar!

Watch the YouTube videos where he's interviewed by Tom Snyder (there's 3, the first one is the best, but there's audio only for that one), and then read his autobiography. He was a genuine lunatic, mostly in a good way.

I frisked him. He's clean.

Hayden was also a decent novelist (Voyage) but the drinking really aged him prematurely.

by Anonymousreply 701/27/2011

He wasn't so photogenic, but he was a real hunk. What a contradiction! I like him a lot.

by Anonymousreply 811/10/2012

He was very handsome and masculine without being grotesque!

by Anonymousreply 911/11/2012

Loved him in Strangelove and Asphalt Jungle and Suddenly.

by Anonymousreply 1011/11/2012

I detected waves of tenderness beyond his severe countenance, many times. I like this actor. He is not wooden as you may think at first. He has a sincerity that disarms you.

He still looked pretty good as the big boss in the last scenes of "9 to 5." Great voice.

Just one of the many Shelley Winters fuckbuddies.

Sterling Hayden was also unique in 'Naked Alibi'. I recently saw that movie with him and got impressed by his integrity and his...'macho' sweetness!

by Anonymousreply 1311/11/2012

A guy who went to fight in WWII (OSS - Yugoslavia) instead of staying home and making movies.

Natalie Wood once recounted her fear of having to jump off his yacht in a Bette Davis movie as it was anchored near Catalina.

She told this story at some Bette Davis tribute dinner that is on Youtube.

And then she died.

Here's the clip.

R15, yes! I have seen 'The Star' with Bette Davis, him and Natalie Wood. I happen to know about the incident you mentioned but i'm sure that thanks to your post a lot of others will find out. :)

Sterling Hayden was perfect as 'Johnny Guitar'...hmmm...what a man and what a great movie!

by Anonymousreply 1811/12/2012

He played Kubrick, John Huston, Coppola, Bertolucci, Robert Altman, Robert Wise, Douglas Sirk, Nicholas Ray among others. He was a talented actor and acting wasn't his only activity.

by Anonymousreply 1911/12/2012

He was so fit in film noir roles. Like a glove in a hand.
