Fucking hilarious! Apparently the same thing happened in a Hurricane conference - the guy signed "Pizza" and "Bear Monster".

Just awesome.

This is oddly not that uncommon.

There was a whole thing with Mandela a long time ago-- he gave a speech and the sign language interpreter had no clue, was just making random hand gestures.

It also happened at Nelson Mandelas funeral iirc. That was hilarious too.

Is it some kind of borderline pathology?

It’s hilarious until you’re a deaf person who is desperate for hurricane evacuation news.

It’s also so disrespectful to deaf people in general. It’s like translating a speech for a Chinese audience by saying “Ching Chong, Ching Chong!”

r6 That was different, it was just some guy who they knowingly used in a "pinch", he obviously wasn't well versed as he probably let on.

If you’re putting someone on TV in front of millions of viewers, you should make sure that they know what they’re doing. There’s just no excuse in the world.

At the same time, it is funny to watch if you don’t have to rely on them for life saving information.

It's not hilarious you juvenile wankers. It's ridiculous and insulting to deaf people. And it's happened several times at important events. How the fuck did this imposter just wander in? Is it open house? If there isn't already, there should be a register of properly qualified signers that public bodies can use and stop this nonsense.

This woman is a career con artist with the rap sheet to prove it. They don't even know how she got there, because they have a standing arrangement with a firm that provides interpreters.

One deaf lady said it looked like she was singing, which is hilarious. If you don't find this shit funny, since it wasn't relaying anything life altering, get a life.

Yeah it's hilarious. Sure it's also dangerous, silly and insulting too. But an adult making ridiculous faces and movements while spouting gibberish among all the sober officials is funny.

I'm glad to see that it's not always someone from a historically disadvantaged group with well-known language deficiencies of other kinds who pulls this stunt.

Refreshing.

The Hurricane guy in the yellow shirt has family members who are deaf and has a limited knowledge of sign language. He works for the city and was pressured to sign for the hurricane update/evacuation notice.

The woman is pathological/crazy and is a convicted conwoman.

This is one of those things where I feel horribly guilty for laughing . Not at the deaf or the disabled, but at her conviction and dedication to her craft. Wonder how she slipped in .
