Christmas songs that are not commonly played.

"All I want for Christmas...is you" is both one of the most loved and hated songs in the world.

Let's find the obscure, the unusual and put together a holiday collection of no classics that are pure joy.

From 1966 album "Wild Christmas".

"Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues is considered a "Christmas classic" in the UK, but it NEVER gets played on radio stations in the U.S. That's probably due to the fact that it's really a very nasty song about two druggie losers, and incredibly badly "sung (if you can call that singing)" by Shane MacGowan. Kirsty MacColl, who sings the female part is good though; she always was. Maybe Brits and the Irish have a taste for this kind of thing, but a song with lyrics like "You're an old slut on junk, lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed" and "you scumbag you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot" isn't exactly going to warm the hearts of many at Christmas time. And NYPD doesn't have a fucking choir, goddammit!

This is one of the few bright spots in Meredith Willson's lackluster Broadway musical Here's Love, based on the classic Christmas film Miracle on 34th Street. Willson (The Music Man) had written It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas several years earlier. It was put into the show and sung in counterpoint with a new song, Pine Cones and Holly Berries. It's short and very sweet. Fred Gwynne chimes in at the end. Santa Clause sings first.

The original version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Frank Sinatra was doing an album called "A Jolly Christmas" and thought some of the lyrics on HYAMLC were too downbeat, so he changed them from "We'll have to muddle through somehow" to the bland "Hang a shining star from the highest bough".

The original, rejected, film lyrics were so bleak, r57, that Garland refused to sing them and Minnelli and the producers agreed with her:

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

It may be your last

Next year we may all be living in the past

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

Pop that champagne cork

Next year we may all be living in New York

No good times like the olden days

Happy golden days of yore

Faithful friends who were dear to us

Will be near to us no more

Etc.

“Carol for Another Christmas” by Henry Mancini. It was written for a TV movie of the same name made by Rod Serling for CBS, an update of A Christmas Carol.

That film aired in 1964 but many saw it as Serling at his preachy, speechy worst and it was never re-broadcast.

So you’d think the lovely, bittersweet carol written for it by Mancini would similarly have faded into obscurity, but it was saved and has become a favorite thanks to an unlikely source — the Yule Log. The tune is the second-to-last to play before “Joy to the World” ends the three-hour broadcast. For many of us growing up in the New York metropolitan area, hearing it on Christmas Eve meant that the night’s worth of music and festive burning log was about to wrap up for another year.

Henry Mancini & His Orchestra from the album "A Merry Mancini Christmas". A very pretty Christmas song.
