I blame the parents. They have optimum responsibility for their children.
If they want their baby to be a star, and send them to work, and work hotbed of sexualisation and creeps, it’s on them for placing them in that scenario in the first place. Kids try to please their parents, and are taught to be brave in life, and try to be cool. Combined with the the responsibility of them being financially responsible for their families it’s really fucking hard for them to ask for help or admit something is wrong.

Bill Maher on Friday said that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis “wasn’t wrong” when he spoke about Disney sexualizing children, and that liberals were willing to “overlook” that and worse because it was a Republican who called it out.
“Have you all been watching the Max documentary called Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV? OMG. Nickelodeon? It wasn’t a studio, it was Neverland Ranch with craft services,” said Maher on Friday. “It is just scene after scene, clip after clip of the child stars of their day being subjected to obviously inappropriate, highly sexualized degradation.”
He specifically brought up DeSantis and Disney to call out the left.
“It didn’t just expose a dangerous workplace, it also exposed hypocrisy,” he said. “Because, it must be pointed out that when the evil governor of Florida was saying the exact same thing about kids and creepy stuff at Disney that liberals now find intolerable at Nickelodeon, he was dismissed as a hick and a bigot.”
“But why would a kid’s content factory like Disney be all that different than the one at Nickelodeon?” he continued. “A 2014 CNN report discovered that at least 35 Disney employees had been arrested for sex crimes against children. And in 2021, Disney child star Alyson Stoner confessed she only narrowly survived the toddler-to-trainwreck pipeline. The next year, child star Cole Sprouse told The New York Times that young actresses at the Disney Channel were heavily sexualized from an early age.”
“𝐃𝐞𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠! 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐨𝐰, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝-𝐟***𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭,” he said.

Incidentally, after the advent of sound made films more realistic a century ago, Pre-Code Hollywood (1927-1934) scandalized America with its frank depictions of sex , drugs, and increasing nudity, which led to the religious right taking over the film industry via the Motion Picture Production Code (aka Hays Code) and reigning from 1934 to 1968.
Perhaps the conservatives will take back Hollywood and give us another Golden Age.

I agree with Maher that people tend to dismiss good ideas and not really controversial points depending on who says it.
I also think he was raging against the gender stuff.
Should kids go to drag queen story hour? That's up to the parents. What I find interesting is that an art form, if you will, that was so edgy and underground and the furthest thing from PC has now become so mainstream that the audience is suburban women, children, and I guess gays. Are gays still into drag queens?

Maher also trotted out that footage of a drag queen dancing for tips, and a young boy giving them a tip, with something sexual in neon plastered on the wall. I had seen that one before used to illustrate that 'gays have gone too far' in exposing kids to gay sexuality.
I've got mixed feelings about that whole thing, myself. We're being told that men in wigs and makeup, and sexualized innuendo, are not at all appropriate for kids, and it sounds like a reasonable argument. Maybe it's not so great for kids, to put so much culture to them at such a young age....
But then I got to thinking, wait a minute, STRAIGHT sexual culture is in our face 24/7. Movies, TV, celebrity culture, everything is out there already for kids' consumption, and it always has been. I recall being a boy watching even PG or PG13 movies, and you still had chicks with big tits (remember Loni Anderson?), cleavage on display, full leg shown, makeup, hitting on guys, swearing, etc. On WKRP in Cincinnati. I mean, if kids are too precious to be subjected to sexualized gay culture, aren't they also too precious to be subjected to our heteronormative, always allowed, straight sexuality? Also, won't a lot of the innuendo just go over the kids' heads, like it usually does? Remember how Family Guy and The Simpsons rode that line, back when they were good shows?
So yeah, I think Maher is way off base, ultimately. The culture wars weren't started by gays or drag queens, they were started by straight people's intolerance and violence against us. Fuck Maher.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 21, 2024 6:55 PM |
R32, the difference is that drag and transvestism are a fetish for most. It’s not fantasy. It’s sexual, period. Marketing it directly to children, not something kids may see in their peripheral, is not the same thing as something sexual in an adult show or movie. Also, the trans movement IS brainwashing kids. They’re fighting for children to take drugs, take hormones, and mutilate their body. It’s dangerous. The trans movement and gay rights organizations place drag under the trans umbrella. It’s highly political and inappropriate on so many levels.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 21, 2024 7:01 PM |
R32 taking a kid to a show where, say, strippers, are dancing suggestively in very skimpy outfits under a banner "It aint going to lick itself" would not get a pass either. I agree to a certain extent that a certain level of sexuality gets through via the media but not to that extreme. Plus the media is one thing, quite another is taking a child to a show of the like that might expose children to people they should not be exposed to.
That said I never got the big dealabout things such as drag storytelling as long as it's kept relatively clean for children. But then again, 90% of trans humour is in it's raunchiness, so what is even the point.

The point R35 is why is Drag Queen story hour even a thing? The whole point is to expose children to inclusivity. But it's so dumb. Drag is not for children. The humor is raunchy, its roots are as underground adult entertainment. It's like if they had Children's Cabaret hour where erotic dancers read stories to kids. It's just a stupid thing to fight for. It's a dumb thing to have.

I just think it's a dumb thing to go to the mat for as far as the Right to Free speech and freedom of expression are concerned. Neutering drag queens just so they can read to children takes all the fun of what drag queen entertainment is about. Drag queens are not just clowns to entertain children, they are here to skewer the things we hold sacred in society, turn it on its head. That's the power, to reveal who we are as a people. All that shit is wasted on children. At its best, it's not something children should be around.

But then again, I was just in Vegas where I saw parents hauling their kids around at 11pm at night from casino to casino. Most people who breed are stupid. The smart ones don't have kids.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 22, 2024 8:02 PM |
R50 what happened to babysitters and grandmas? Straight parents are fucking weird now. I know so many straight couples who get wasted in front their kids and drag them around to Bar & Grills and parties. It’s so weird. Back in the day, there was adult world and kid world, kids rarely saw the adult side unless it was a major holiday, like 4th of July. If kids were home they were ordered to stay in their room. Parents were ACTUALLY ADULTS too, these new generations are infantile. Every mommy now is a helicopter parent who stifles their kid and never lets them run free. Zillenial mommies are psychopaths who think a pedo is around every corner, and they read something into every little joke in a kids movie as if it’s a brainwashing agenda. Weird times, but then they let iPad raise the kids while they’re getting drunk on weeknights and scrolling facebook.

No one's leading a moral panic about straight parents taking their kids to R-rated movies or to a MMA bout or to Hooters for their birthday or buying their daughters makeup for their sixth birthday.
Most people would (more or less correctly) think, "They're the parents. Not me. They can do what they want."

People like r63 are missing my point entirely. It's not about whether one is right or wrong. My point is that Drag Story hour is a very stupid thing to prop up as a civil rights issue and fight for - it's not that important of a thing to exist. I'd sooner fight for requiring a baker to put mine and my husband's name on a wedding cake than Drag Story hour for children. It makes us look ridiculous that that is something important to us and worth fighting for - especially when most gay people either don't give two shits about it or disagree with it entirely. It reminds me of when on Queer as Folk they were protesting the closing of a club where they had unbridled anonymous sex in the back. They were fighting in the streets for the right to suck anonymous dick. You have to choose your battles or everything starts to look nonsensical and overboard.

Some of the arguments here are such BS. Kids don't look at a drag queen at a story hour and think anything sexual. That's nothing more than adults projecting their own stuff onto those kids. The kids just think it's a guy in a funny costume.
BTW, drag queen story hours were happening long before the Right started getting "outraged" about it.
The video of the kid giving the tip to the dancer was ONE video that has been blown out of proportion. The parent in that situation was definitely wrong to bring a child to that place, but as some others have pointed out, there are a number of parents who bring their kids into inappropriate situations or expose them to inappropriate material and don't give it a second thought.
But if you really want an example of creepy parenting, just look at photos of fundie fathers and their daughters at those Chastity Balls.
